In writing my stories on Sy, I was helped by his daughter, Maxine, and wife, Gloria. Gloria appreciated the stories. She contacted me three months ago to see if I was interested in accepting Sy's collection of approximately 130 sports books which include many of the popular books about baseball over the last few decades. Some were given to Sy by people he knew, the rest he purchased. None of the books are signed. They are used books, but Sy Berger's used I thought it would be great to have Sy's books and that the number of 130 was miraculously close to our OBC membership. I thought, who wouldn't want a book from Sy Berger in exchange for picking them up or paying for the shipping? I told Gloria that I would be happy to have them, provided I could arrange a way to pick them up. I noticed that Sal Domino was the closest OBCer to Rockville Centre, New York, so I gave him a call. Sal was equally enthused. I told Gloria I would take the books, and that my intention was to re-gift books to OBC members. Recently, Sal picked up 132 books and 17 VCR tapes. Sal and I will prepare a COA for Gloria Berger to sign listing each item referenced to a hologram sticker inside each book or item. The COA will be accessible from our oldbaseball.com website. It looks like the cost to box and ship one book with a hologram will be about $4, depending on the size, weight and distance. Shipping two books in one box will be less than an additional $4. If you want to drop by Sal's house in Levittown, you are welcome to pick up a book at no cost. The goal is to breakeven and to distribute all the items to OBCers. Gloria Berger will be happy to know that we are providing a good home for Sy's books among As to the mechanics, I thought we would work it like our waiver wire claims. Let us know if you are willing to provide a new home for one or more of Sy's books. Take a look at the attached list of books and list the books you would like in order of preference in your email back to me. Sal will do his best to match books and tapes available to your requests. Anyone who wants a book will get at least one book to start with and then additional books will be assigned. You can sign up for all the books and tapes, which would mean that Sal and I won't have to figure out what to do with what is left. Once the dust settles, we will let you know which books from your choices are available to you, and then can provide the shipping costs and collect that prior to shipping. If you don't like the cost or the books available, you can drop out. You agree to keep the books for at least a few years. I have done little heavy-lifting in this project. Sal is the one who deserves the credit for agreeing to pick up six supermarket boxes full of heavy books and moving them into his house, temporarily. Let me know, if you are interested in participating by responding to this email within the next week (by May 28th) with an email to me at Count me in. The card shop, called LJ=92s Sports Cards and Collectibles is owned by a youngish man named Leon Jicha, a friend of Mike McCann, who lives nearby. I bought a couple cards, variations I found while looking through a dozen or so binders he has of vintage baseball, and while chatting with him I mentioned OBC and our love of well-loved cards. He turned and grabbed stack ofcards and said, =93Like these?=94 He had a few dozen vintage Topps (mostly) baseball (mostly) cards that werein difficult condition. I asked him what he did when he got P/F cards like these and he said he usually gave them to charities. So I replied, =93Why not give them to OBC? Twenty OBCers responded and expressed interest in 114 items. Fortunately, there were only about 5 items that 3 or 4 people listed, so it looks like whatever preferences you listed should have a good chance of success. I received several nice comments about this project to share with Gloria Berger. Now comes the fun part of Sal Domino looking at my fancy spreadsheet of responses and the emails to figure out who gets what and how much the shipping is. I didn't hear from anyone who said they would drop by Sal's house, but that option is certainly open. Who knows, Sal might even buy you a refreshment if you pick up the books. It will likely take some time for Sal to have a chance to confirm the proposed distribution to recipients, determine the shipping costs, notify recipients, insert the COA stickers, collect the shipping costs and mail the items. I'll let Sal get back to each of the winners on those matters. Once we know who is getting what, I will prepare COA letters for Gloria Berger to sign with the idea that a separate letter from Gloria goes to each recipient by mail. One OBCer said he was interested in anything that is left. At this point there are still about 40 items needing a home. I would hope that those items could still be spread among OBCers. If you haven't responded yet and still have an interest, let me know. I can send you a list of what is left. You can also tell Sal to just pick out a book or two and mail it to you. Thanks again for adding Sy Berger books to your collections.
