================= To: UVlist , OBC Ramblings Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2017 02:53:49 +0000 Subject: MARCH MADNESS basketball wantlist sharing is LIVE NOW From: Aaron Shirley Welcome to MARCH MADNESS. The core of the idea is a live, shareable group of basketball card wantlists for everyone to work on together. Anyone in OBCcan add their wantlists, and anyone in OBC can edit others' wantlists to reflect what they're sending to them. It's automatically and immediately updated so everyone will always have the most current version. Here's the link: MARCH MADNESS Some guidelines for LISTING your WANTLISTS: - If you have ANY basketball card wantlists whatsoever, we'd love to see them. You can add your wantlists to the spreadsheet yourself, or email them to Aaron for him to add them for you. - The format is YOUR NAME, SET YEAR AND NAME, WANTLIST. This makes it easier for others to find the right lists quickly. - Note the tabs at the bottom of the screen which read VINTAGE and UV. Paste your lists in the appropriate section. Aaron will move stuff if you forget - no big deal. - It's okay to just add all your lists to the end of the page at once. You can then SORT them if you wish, by clicking DATA, then using one of the SORT options. But that's not really necessary. Aaron will occasionally sort the lists chronologically so they're easier for everyone to check through. - Please make sure your lists are WANT lists not HAVE lists, as it makes itmuch easier for the guys who are pulling cards to send you. - Please also make note of it, if you are working on a second or third or ninth - If at any time you make a mistake, just click EDIT then UNDO. Some guidelines for SHARING your DUPES: - If you have any basketball DUPES, we'd love for you to share them! - Please edit the list to take out the cards you're sending. It's not absolutely necessary, but it is very helpful, so the recipients don't get dupes. - If at any time you make a mistake after you've edited someone's wantlist, just click EDIT then UNDO. If you're in the process of editing a list, andknow it's wrong, you can just hit ESC on your keyboard and it will discardthe changes you're currently making. - Check back throughout the month, as there are several folks who keep adding new lists as time allows. Fleer February was quite successful. At least in terms of number of cards sent and received. So this month, there's a new feature: "RUNNING TOTAL." Each time you finish up a session of pulling cards to send people, count yourcards. Then go to the RUNNING TOTAL tab and put that number in column A torepresent how many cards you are sending. If you have any questions, just ask. Looking forward to seeing another great month of cardboard flying. ================= Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2017 11:51:44 -0500 To: OBC-Wantlist@yahoogroups.com, VCT , Subject: Looking for a Mel Ott card From: Jimi Thayer Hey guys, It's Mel Ott's birthday today, so thought I'd see if anyone has an Ott lying around for trade or sale. Looking to get anything from 1929 to 1982, although preference is prewar material over something more recent. I might consider purchasing something from 1929 and into the 30s or so. A 1960 or 1961 Fleer would work, too, but I'd like to trade for it, not purchase. From: Jimi Thayer Hey guys, I almost forgot the HOF birthdays today! Today is Wee Willie Keeler AND John Ward'd birthdays, so I am on the prowl for their cards. Funnily enough,I did buy a 1994 American Archives set a few days ago, and it arrived today...so I pulled Keeler and Ward out, along with 27 other HOFers that I needed! So really, I had a good day in that regard. Believe it or not that's a bit of a tough set, and William Hulbert's HOF RC is in that set, so that was one reason I did. Anyway, I'd be looking for some vintage hits for these guys if you have any. Today, I'm looking for HOFers Sam Thompson and Dazzy Vance, both having their birthdays this weekend. Sam Thompson is a tough one because his RC lies in the 19th Century, eitherwithin the 1887 N172 Old Judge set, or other ones such as Buchner Gold Coin and the impossible Gypsy Queens. After the 19th Century, he doesn't haveanother card until those yellow HOF Plaque postcard from the '60s. No Callahan and no 1960s Fleers either. Soooooo....I'm not planning on anyone sending me a Sam Thompson today! LOL. However, if you happen to have newer Archives-type cards of him, I can use one! :) Dazzy Vance is much easier! Although his 1919 Zeenut is difficult, he played through the Goudey years, has some strip cards, and Exhibits as well. After his playing days were over, he appeared in the Callahan set, both 60 Fleers, Bazookas, 70s Fleer, 61 Golden Press, and so on. Love to grab a Vance if you have one!! For example, if somebody was to use this server to look for a 1988 Donruss All Stars Popup card of Gary Carter, that wouldn't be allowed. Even if that guy doesn't even know where or how to use the UV servers, and spent an hour yesterday opening a box of 1988 Donruss All Stars packs which I bought maybe ten years ago for two bucks, and pulled out three complete 64-card sets of 1988 Donruss All Stars, two complete Stan Musial puzzles, and still came up one card short of a 1988 Donruss All Stars Popups set by missing Gary Carter, this is not the appropriate server to use to ask if anyone has an extra 1988 Donruss All Star Popups Gary Carter. A better idea would be to go to eBay and search for the least expensive option - HOLY CRAP they want $1.49 for it with free postage! Sheesh! That's almost as much as I spent on the whole box of 48 packs! And there's also a PSA 8 example of the same card for THIRTY BUCKS with $2.67 postage! Yesterday was the day. Walked in, and easily spotted Uncle Dick's florescent green booth. I spent a while there searching for cards and chatting with GEORGE VRECHEK. RON PERRY and JOHN DAHMS came by a few minutes later. With Mike and Nick absent, that was it for OBC sitings for the day. It still doesn't seem like a complete show without TJ there, but I hope we can see him sometime soon. Praying that his NIH study will help him find some answers. Focus of the day was my football post and philadelphia sets. Spent about 20 minutes going through Dick's beater box, and picked up a few, including a post dowler (always fighting for packers at the chicago shows). I then spent five hours at AJ Firestone's (all football booth). Sets are sorted by set and year, and since I only had 5 sets to look through, it averaged an hour per. I could have been done in an hour total if the cards had been in order. Not sure if spending that much time is a good thing, as it preserved my cash. or a bad thing, as he had boxes in back that werent displayed and I could have found more, and spent more. He tells me that putting cards in order is helpful for about an hour, and then they are a mess. Even a sign saying put things back in order is generally ignored. As my wantlists get smaller, I get older, and my body rebels against standing on a concrete floor for 5 straight hours, the lure of spending hours going through unsorted commons is wearing off. That is usually offset if it a dealer that I know well (Kurt, AJ, etc), and we BS along the way. Otherwise, I find that I am walking past those booths at this point. I saw JD, Chappell, I think Chandy and a few other dealers we know. One other guy saw the OBC hat and quizzed me on what he should bring to national. The jist of the conversation, which he couldn't get his arms around, was that most OBCers, being set collectors, would rather get a good price on lesser quality if they can make a big dent in their wantlists the pay up for EX and better. He went back and forth from liking the idea to not wanting to lug his creased and damaged corner cards up here in August. And would we pay 10-15% book anyways if he did. I suspect he wont get a ton of OBC biz, but it was an interesting conversation in any case. As far as my wantlists, all five sets are now more than half done, so are listed as want lists on my football page. No doubt that between now and national, I am hoping to get close to finishing them. And still pissed off that I sold my philly sets a few years back anyways! Looking forward to seeing everyone here the last week in August. From: Jim Thayer I missed Hall of Famer Joe McGinnity's birthday yesterday for various reasons, but I wanted to put a plug out there that I am in search of a card thatpredates his 1953-55 Artvue HOF Postcard, which currently resides in my HOF Collection. Not an easy task! The ultimate prize for me will be his 1899-1900 M101 Sporting News supplement, and is actually a little easier and cheaper to obtain than his next few cards after that. However, he does have a T206, so perhaps someone here will have one for trade or sale! FYI - no HOF birthdays again until Friday (Sisler....so start digging now!) ;) Moving on..... I am knee deep in e-mails. I had a much better day yesterday, as my health continues to improve, but after a nice long conversation on the phonein the morning and then a trip to the orthodontist and soccer practice, I went to bed pretty quickly after returning home. So, with that being said, my goal is to respond to everyone this morning, including texts, e-mails, and overdue phone calls. So much to do!! :) Additionally, I am working on creating a new website with a new host, and adding a bunch of new sets. Be on the lookout for some requests soon! I also committed a "DIBAD" (Dammit/Darn it.D'oh! I Bought A Dupe") & bought a Ron Swoboda even though I already had one. Hoping to make a trade of one or more of these for any of the players I still need for that set: 1 Chance, 3 Howard,4 Fregosi, 6 Clemente, 7 Drysdale, 9 Kaline, 10 Killebrew, 11 Lonborg, 12Cepeda, 13 Peters, 18 Mantle, 20 Mays, 21 Santo, 23 Rose, 24 F. Robinson. I have no illusions about getting any of the big name,s but there are some commons on there I'd be just as happy to have. One of the Staub posters has a tear along one of the fold lines. The other Staub & extra Swoboda are in pretty nice shape. Tom Housley
