My experieince is that '66 and '67 Topps are among the most challenging sets to complete because of the shortprints. The good news (and reason for my writing) is that I did complete both sets within the past couple years and was able to due so without spending "$100for Jim Shellenback (or insert name)". My set is generally midgrade, so sounds like we're compatible there too. Also - I would venture to bet without looking that the vast majority of the shortprints I boughtwere procured via Ebay. So what do I recommend? First a heavy dosage of patience (to offset the urge to spend $100 on a nobody). I recall going to the 2010 National needing two cards to finish off the 1966 set and being excited that I found one at my price pretty quickly. But it was that darn Minnesota Twins team card standing in my way. Everyone who had one for sale was asking about twice (or more) of what I was willing to pay. So I passed. And waited. And it was several months later that I found the '66 Twins team card at my target price. SCORE! Set killed!! Second thing is to create focused Ebay searches. Not sure if you knowhow to do this on Ebay, but my searches identify the set (and the cards I still need). Ebay syntax is such that whatever you put inside of parentheses ( ) acts as an or. Also, a"-" means exclude So the following is my current query in Ebay for the last 11 cards I need to complete the 1958 Topps set: 1958 Topps (1, 30, 47, 52, 150, 187, 288 , 289, 310, 370, 418) -PSA -SGC -reprint This will help target your search to only the cards you need. I find that I add a lot of "-" (excludes) in certain sets or else you get a lot ofnew Heritage style, reprints, graded cards, etc. that you don't want. So what I've done is to exclude cards with PSA, SGC or reprint in the title of the listing. You can create an email alert to notify you when something is listed ... including setting pricing parameters. Part of my success was looking for Buy It Nows where the price was $20 or less. You can play around with the pricing levels, but you get the idea. These alerts were assigned to searches I created as outlined above.By doing this you will get an email noticewhenever somebodylists one of these insane shortprints as a Buy It Now at a reasonable price.... you can jump on it! I will tell you that I picked up many a shortprint in such a manner. Hope this is remotely helpful ... and best of luck to you. The most important thing, though, is patience. You've really got to hold fire until the right card at the right price comes up. And believe me they In addition to ebay, you need to take time to trawl other websites on a daily basis to try to find the best deals. Check out Beckett Marketplace, Sportlots, COMC, and Kevin Savage Auctions for example. Over the past couple years, I've picked up several of those very tough 66 and 67 highs at great prices simply by being lucky enough to check those websites at just the righttime. Here's a few examples: 1966T #561 Choo Choo Coleman $19.50 1967T #592 Shellenback/Willis RC$2.22 1966T #544 Cardinals RC $5.94 1966T #591 Shirley/Jackson RC $12 1967T #536 Niekro RC $12 1967T #572 Don Demeter $5 1967T #576 Hernandez/Gigon RC $10 1967T #569 Carew RC $20 (at the 2011 National) 1967T #580 Colavito $14.95 1967T #581 Seaver RC $124 (Kevin Savage Auctions) The last piece of advice I would give you is don't be afraid to take a flyer on a card that's described as low grade. Of all those I've listed above, the only one I would consider upgrading would be the Shellenback/Willis RC and even that's not that bad!! I think it defines the realization that a card you thought you had isn't actually there. The card that wasn't there was a 1966 Topps football common of Bill Mathis, which I could probably get on eBay but it's more fun to stir up some OBC activity. At the National I decided to get into hockey cards thanks to Steve Rittenberg's starters from 2 years ago, finding a bunch of hockey at 10 cents at the National, and the generous hits from OBCers especially Mike Rich's National swap contest. Now I notice I'm already down to only needing 9 cards from the 1977-8 Topps set - all commons except Orr, I believe. I can almost taste completing that set - unless I find some set gremlins. And then there is the next year of 1976-7 Topps hockey with a doable total of 93 cards left, and the Star Wars (mostly all OBC) set is down to 7 cards.and there must be some of those Hostess cards from 1979 out there.
