Since I have completed a couple of sets that are strictly OBC I naturally decided to get these completed sets put away first. Imagine my horror torealize that my 1976 complete set was missing three cards!! Originally it was six, but three were found after much cursing to the baseball Gods and acomplete turnover of my collection! Hoping for a few heroes to replace these cards. I guess they're with those darn socks!! 1976 Topps needed 319 537 612 Do you remember the feel of the candy store steps? ================= To: obc-wantlist@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2006 00:18:04 -0400 From: "Mac Wubben" Subject: Mac's August Wantlist It's been a little while since I sent out one of these. Exhausting for the chaperones becasue we were up REALLY early & had to keep the kids from having too much fun, if you know what I mean. I also made my debut as the new announcer for the band - I get to introduce them at all of the football games. Anyhow, since I was gone last week, I didn't get to post my WL on the 10th, so here goes. This month I'm posting some oddball sets & inserts I could use some help on, but as always, any help to any set on my wantlist is appreciated. Except for the upgrades, ANY condition is accepted - especially on the 61 & 62 Post sets! I didn't even post a list last month but I did pick up some items on eBay and here and there. Now there are less than 400 cards I need to complete the regularly issued run of Topps Baseball cards (`51 -`80). I now need only 381 Topps cards for the run thanks to all of your help especially Brock Hattox, Peter Mead, Linda Fitak, Andy Cook, Spike Gliden, Corky Steiger, Joe Issac who have hit the list recently (only 611 including the variations with `53 Topps bio's just added). I'm so close on `59, `60, `62, `63 and `64 it would be great to get a few more hits to these short lists. The 1954 set is down to 2 BIG NAME cards left - Aaron and Williams. Here is my updated posting of the Topps Baseball want list for those of you that would care to assist me - I will do my best to reciprocate. If you can't sleep at night because you have a desire to send cards to England, I'll always take any pre-wars just becasue they are 1) A Close Play at the Home Plate (Laporte, Wallace) (Black Factory 30 Bobby Wallace is one of those guys that made the HOF just by being around a long time I suppose. Otherwise, how does a .267 hitter with 35 HR get into Cooperstown? He played, managed, and umpired, so he was a pretty versatile guy. He broke his hand in 1912, which started his slide and led to his umpiring/managerial career. He was associated with baseball for over 60 2) A Desperate Slide For Third (Cobb, O'Leary) (Black Factory 649 back). Popular and witty Charley O'Leary was the regular shortstop for the Tigers from 1904 through 1907 and played on the 1907-09 Detroit pennant winners. In the off-season, he and Tiger prankster Germany Schaefer worked a comic vaudeville act. O'Leary coached for the Yankees from 1920 to 1930, then worked for the Cubs and Browns. He was 51 in 1934 when he asked the Browns for one last chance to improve on his lifetime .226 average. Appearing as a pinch hitter, he singled, raising his average by .00024. 3) A Desperate Slide For Third (Cobb, O'Leary) (Red Factory 30 back). My favorite Cobb story had something to do with a reporter asking him much later in life what he'd hit against today's pitchers. He said he'd only hit about .300, then after a pause he added, "After all, I'm 73 years old..." 4) A Desperate Slide For Third (Cobb, O'Leary) (Black Factory 30 back). Again, I have to chase the elusive Black Factory 30 backs. They are by far the hardest to find of the three, and I'm not sure that every card was printed with the Black 30 back, but I would find it hard to believe they would only print some of them. I have never seen a premium attached to them, simply becasue nobody really cares other than me! 5) A Great Batsman (Barger, Bergen) -- (Black Factory 649 back). This is a pretty cool card because, although the end panels feature a couple of Brooklyn Superbas, the center panel is Nap Lajoie, who doesn't appear in the T205 set. It makes you wonder why he didn't appear in the T205 set or warrant an end panel in the T202 set. He was still hitting at better than a .360 clip in those days, so you would have thought he would get a card. Anyway, it makes this card a pretty good value for a "common."
