================= To: Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2006 20:59:53 -0500 From: "George" Subject: Helmar Original Artwork Have you seen the new auction catalog from Huggins & Scott? It has original artworks for the Helmar cards. There are 3 lots with 4 or 5 artworks in each lot. The website is www.hugginsandscott.com. The lot numbers are 917, 918 and 919. Is anyone interested in a joint bid? We could win one lot,and then split it. I do not need 4 or 5 paintings, but one might be nice. I am working on my 2nd and 3rd sets. If anyone would like to trade, my lists are below. Any trades will be welcome! My Topps list is pretty much in a dormat state although I found a website that allows me to finish a couple of the sets by picking up the variation cards. I added the Helmar set even though I didnt get into the potato chip craze. Hi everyone; I really should be working on my sermon for this Sunday (It's YOUTH Sunday, and the teens and preteens are doing the whole service except for the sermon, which, as the youth minister, I get to do)... but I wanted to take a break and post a part of my wantlist that is not actually on my weblist. At the bottom of my vintage wantlist, I have a section that lists the different groups of players that I collect. The individual players are not listed out, as I collect WAY more players than anyone else I know. And it's not as high a priority as working on Topps base sets, so I left the full list off. Well, I figured that JUST THIS ONCE I would post that list. Here goes. I'll list this first, since it doesn't really have a time frame. I collect any cards of any years of the Boston / Milwaukee / Atlanta Braves. A lot of the Atlanta stuff gets sent on to the kids at the church who collect... And our church secretary absolutely loves Andres Galarraga and Jeff Francoeur... Anyway... They're listed by the decade in which they began playing. Some of my favorites are in all caps. Before 1920: LEW BROCKETT, Ed Delahanty, Bobby Lowe, BABE RUTH. 1920's JIMMIE FOXX, Lou Gehrig, Chuck Klein, MEL OTT, MULE SHIRLEY, Hack Wilson. 1930's JOSH GIBSON, HANK GREENBERG, JOHNNY MIZE, Ted Williams. 1940's YOGI BERRA (wife collects), Gil Hodges, Ralph Kiner, Pat Seerey, TEX SHIRLEY, Warren Spahn. 1950's HANK AARON, Joe Adcock, Ernie Banks, Rocky Colavito, GEORGE CROWE, SAM JETHROE, Harmon Killebrew, Mickey Mantle, ROGER MARIS, Eddie Mathews, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Katsuya Nomura, SADAHARU OH, Frank Robinson. 1960's Reggie Jackson, Tommy John, Phil Niekro, BART SHIRLEY. 1970's George Foster, Bob Horner, Dale Murphy, Eddie Murray, Mike Schmidt, BOB SHIRLEY. 1980's Brady Anderson, Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Cecil Fielder, Andres Galarraga, Juan Gonzalez, Ken Griffey Jr, Fred McGriff, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Gary Sheffield, STEVE SHIRLEY, Sammy Sosa, Greg Vaughn. 1990's Jeff Bagwell, Mike Cameron, Vinny Castilla, Carlos Delgado, Jim Edmonds, Jason Giambi, Luis Gonzalez, SHAWN GREEN, VLADIMIR GUERRERO, ANDRUW JONES, Chipper Jones, Kevin Millwood, Mike Piazza, Manny Ramirez, ALEX RODRIGUEZ, AL SHIRLEY, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Mark Whiten, Jamey Wright. 2000's Jeff Francoeur, JEFF KEPPINGER, Keith Luuloa, Josh Phelps. Okay, alright, that's close to a hundred guys. It's silly, I know, but if you have any availables of these guys, I'd like to know. Maybe we could work out a trade. Next week I think I am going to list my "all players named Shirley in any sport" wantlist. It's a little over 100 cards, and I'm thinking about whether or not to add it to one of the pages of my OBC wantlist online. It's a lot more hittable, I guess, since there's no HOF players involved, and therefore no thousand dollar cards and stuff... ================= Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2006 20:05:55 EST To: OBC-Wantlist@yahoogroups.com From: typecard@aol.com Subject: postwar regionals I'm seeking these cards in any condition. If anyone has the year, please let me know. The sets are: Donruss Super Freaks (2nd series) a set of 44 sticker cards. The other very similar set is the Donruss BB Greatest Gross Outs (set of 88 sticker cards). I'll repeat a few brief bios for anybody interested in these old-timers! 1) A Close Play at the Home Plate (Laporte, Wallace) (Red Factory 30 back). LaPorte was a quiet player who split most of his seasons among several positions. In 1911 he batted a career-high .314 with 37 doubles and 82 as the Browns' second baseman, leading AL second basemen in assists, double plays, and errors. He was pushed out by Del Pratt in 1912 and sold to the Senators. He could hit line drives as hard as any AL player when he jumped to the Federal League, which he led with 107 RBI in 1914 while batting .311 for the first-place Indianapolis Hoosiers in 1914. He bowed out after a 1915 season in which his average dropped to .253, although he did lead league second basemen in putouts, assists, and double plays. 2) A Close Play at the Home Plate (Laporte, Wallace) (Black Factory 30 back). Bobby Wallace is one of those guys that made the HOF just by being around a long time I suppose. Otherwise, how does a .267 hitter with 35 HR get into Cooperstown? He played, managed, and umpired, so he was a pretty versatile guy. He broke his hand in 1912, which started his slide and led to his umpiring/managerial career. He was associated with baseball for over 60 years. 3) A Close Play at the Home Plate (Pelty, Wallace) (Red Factory 30 back). The center panel of this card features Billy Sullivan of the Hitless Wonders White Sox. Sullivan was a great catcher, although a terrible batter - his .212 lifetime average makes him the second worst hitter of all-time with at least 3000 at bats (the worst is in this set too, you'll just have to wait to find out). Ty Cobb said he was the best catcher to "ever wear shoe leather." He also obtained a patent for the first chest protector with compressed air. 4) A Close Play at the Home Plate (Pelty, Wallace) (Black Factory 30 back). Barney Pelty was known as the Yiddish Curver as one of the first Jewish players in the AL. He won 16 games for the Browns in 1906, but lost 21 the following year. He was on his way out by the time this card appeared in 5) A Desperate Slide For Third (Cobb, O'Leary) (Black Factory 649 back). Popular and witty Charley O'Leary was the regular shortstop for the Tigers from 1904 through 1907 and played on the 1907-09 Detroit pennant winners. In the off-season, he and Tiger prankster Germany Schaefer worked a comic vaudeville act. O'Leary coached for the Yankees from 1920 to 1930, then worked for the Cubs and Browns. He was 51 in 1934 when he asked the Browns for one last chance to improve on his lifetime .226 average. Appearing as a pinch hitter, he singled, raising his average by .00024. I have conflicting info on this. gm ================= To: , Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2006 09:13:29 -0800 From: "Grant" Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] 62 green tint question Yep- 4 different # 139=92s, 2 Ruths and 2 Reniffs. One Ruth shows the field all in green, and on the left edge of the photo a pole is visible. On the other, the batter=92s box is brown dirt, and no pole visible due to cropping differences. Not that I have studied tints or anything=85. -----Original Message----- From: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com [mailto:OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of smartalecx@aol.com Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 7:28 AM To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com; OBC-Wantlist@yahoogroups.com; Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] 62 green tint question Card # 139. i know the reniff versions, and i have what looks to be a green tint version of Babe Hits 60. is there a non-tint version of Babe Hits 60, where there is dirt showing in the batter's box? Any help would be appreciated. Believe it or not--I was patient enough to not pay $20 for Maury Wills--although the wait was several months long. And then I was able to pick up a Jerry Buchek via Buy it Now from Kit Young for $12. I haven't been able to come close to Mr. Buchek (even for cards with writing on the front--what gives?). So anybody out there in OBC land have a spare Steve Hamilton? How about the George Mason-CT game!
