Thanks to Al Cummings who helps me to crack the 1000 mark additional thanks to: Ken Morganti, Michael Haines, Ray Luurs, Bob D'Angelo, Geno Wagner, Rob Gioia, Steve Rittenberg, Sean McGowan, Ron Perry, Glenn Codere, Chuck Paris, Earl Kilbourn and my friend Rob Church who have sent Topps items since the first of the year as I have been continuing my quest toward the 1000 mark (including variations) for the Topps Baseball run from 1951 to 1980.  All totaled I've knocked off about 3 dozen additional Topps cards since my last report to you.  I now need only Topps card thanks to all of your help.

The next day Trader Doug sent me a nice envelope and somehow that got the spark going again. I went to a card show last week and bought US cards for the first time in over a year. So, I guess am back as a collector again. This time, I'm trying out a new collecting theme, I'm collecting sets of "all-time great players", such as the 1960 and 61 Fleer sets, the TCMA sets and 1980s and 90s collector issues. If you have any of these lying around in your dupes boxes, I'd love to have them. I'm pretty busy this week and may not be able to post some cards from my dupes, but I have several hundred cards from 1969, 1970 and 1972 (low numbers), if anybody wants to email me their wantlsits for these years. Ft. Washington chipped away at the list, but much work remains. The vintage list lives at: http://www.angelfire.com/film/obc_spike/type.html Post-1980 cards also go in the binder, but I don't attempt to catalog them. Although "easy" hits remain, I expect to purchase or trade for much of the list. Note than unnumbered cards are exempt from my list, so "alphabetical" #5s don't count--gotta have the number! Sadly, this leaves me with things like the 1954 Johnston Cookies Hank Aaron and the 1948 Leaf SP Virgil Trucks, but life always has challenges. Hit me unbidden or let me know if you can help. I'll post a separate list of type cards available for swap, should you have the #5 of a given set. One month to baseball! Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! If you'd like to do a trade, please let me know. I have lots of prewar dupes available. On trading...I really dislike doing arranged trades for a single Topps common. I get offered trades like this all the time. Frequently when I actually do the trade for the single Topps card, I get one as a surprise from OBC at the same time. In another trading group I'm in, a guy offered me a trade for a single Post cereal common that I needed (worth at most $1) and he wanted to dicker about a trade. I said "send it and I'll get you back when I can hit your list." He wouldn't do it. To prevent time wasting exchanges like this I posted a disclaimer on the top of my wantlist that I won't do arranged trades for Topps cards. I think prewars are different. I've sent out lots of prewar cards to OBCers without arranged trades (and received same from OBC). Given the increasing difficulty and expense of acquiring prewar cards, I see nothing wrong with soliciting trades for prewar cards. I think the prohibitions on posting trade offers on the server should be (1) no "graded" cards and (2) no Topps commons. I have been making great progress on my lists. So much so that the list has been getting hard to hit. We don't want that, we want everyone of you that feel the need to send me cards to find something in their dupe box. Just to make it even easier I added 3 levels of sets hard, medium, and Hard 1956 Topps a few commons floating around then they get tough Medium 1960 Leaf easy low numbers and tough highs easy 1978 Topps you all have some of those you want to get rid of, no high numbers and just a few rookies OK Have at it and let me know if I did it wrong again. I met him in Houston in 1993 and met him again at the 1998 Twins Fest, where my daughter and I had our picture taken with him andI was able to let him know again what he meant to me. A tremendous man... a gentle hero who excedes expectations. 19?? Exh47 19?? PM10, Small-88 19?? His achievements, while not Hall of Fame caliber, indicated he was a tremendous ballplayer in every aspect of the game and from what I've heard, he was a true "gamer". Finally, in my opinion, "Puddin' Head" has one of the coolest nicknames in an era blessed with many monikers. Thus, Willie was my first choice for OBC's HOM. 1947 PM10 Stadium Pins, 1 3/4" 1949 Eureka Stamps #138 1949 Philadelphia Bulletin #26 1949 Phillies Lummis Peanut Butter #5 1951 Bowman #112 1951 Fischer Baking Labels #11 1952 Bowman #20 1952 Red Man (with tab -- have one without) #NL11 1954 Bowman #143 1955 Bowman #172 1956 Topps #127 1958 Hires Root Beer #60 1960 Leaf #98 1960 Topps #289 1961 Reds Jay Publishing #7 1961 Topps #497 1979 TCMA 50's #29 1983 Phillies Postcards Great Players and Managers #10 1983 Topps 1952 Reprints #47 1987 Sports Cube Game #7 HERMAN A. He anchored left field for the White Sox for nine years, averaging .315 and topping 90 RBIs on three occasions. After a trade to the Indians, he had three more great years, ending his playing career with a lifetime batting average of .314 with 69 homers and 785 ribbies. After his playing days, he went on to coach my alma mater, the Texas Longhorns, compiling a 468-176 record and earning 20 Southwest Conference titles and two national championships. He retired in 1967. I met Mr. Falk after he had thrown out the opening pitch for the Longhorn Alumni game (he's the Falk in Disch- Falk field, the Longhorns home field), accompanied him on a short walk, and he was gracious enough to sign my program and tell me a few baseball stories. A wonderful man... I'd love to eventually gather all his cards. I am missing the following: 1921 Exhibit #46 1921 Nielson's Chocolate (V61) #15 1922 American Caramel Series of 120 (E121/120) 1922 American Caramels Series of 240 (E120) 1922 W501 #41 1922 W573 1922 W575-1 1923 W572 1923 Willard Chocolate (V100) 1925 Exhibit #74 1926 Exhibit #75 1927 York Caramels Type I (E210) #39 1928 Exhibit #38 1928 W502 #39 1929 Exhibit 4-on-1, #22 1931 Exhibit 4-on-1, #22 1928 Yuengling's Ice Cream #39 1992 Conlon #518 HOOKS WILTSE: Another forgotten pitching great for the Giants, overshadowed by Mathewson and the rest of a fine staff. Had thrown a perfect game up until the final batter in the 9th inning on July 4, 1909. With a 1-ball, 2-strike count, the batter (who happened to be the opposing team's pitcher) crowded the plate and drew a called "ball". Infuriated by the subversion of the enemy batter and the gullability of the Umpire, Wiltse lost his temper and intentionally beaned the hitter, thus ending his strive for perfection. My HAVE LIST includes the following: B18 blanket (green basepaths) T3 Turkey Red - My first T3 and it=E2=99s a beauty! Thanks to Mike Diamanti Jim Montgomery, OBC Santas supreme! T213, Type 2 (Portrait, Jersey City) CHARLES SOLOMON "BUDDY" MYER WISHLIST: Buddy is one of my top choices for guys who should be in the HOF but are not. Ethnicity and religious beliefs should play no role in the politics of the Hall, but apparently it does. A tremendous ballplayer! Hats off! A plaque commemorating his sacrifice rested in The Polo Grounds until the park was destroyed. The Giants held a brief memorial for him and other soldiers on Veteran's Day each year. HAVE: B18 Blanket Any others are very welcome! CHRISTY MATHEWSON Simply the greatest package of gentleman and ballplayer to grace the Elysian Fields in the first half of the 20th Century. If you all have the opportunity, read the book "The Celebrant" by Eric Rolfe Greenberg and you, too, will be hooked... just ask Josh! :-) Well all, take care and thanks again! ================= Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 15:07:24 EST Subject: Jim's (Finally) Up-To-Date Old Card Wantlist -- FB, Hockey, Bkb and Nonsports To: OBC-Wantlist@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... Here's part two of the beast. It includes all old nonbaseball cards I collect. Hope it doesn't crash your mail system! Take care... Jim Wiehe 414 North 118th Plaza #1 Omaha, NE 68154-2457 1948 Bowman --- I found card #53, the old Bear Frank (Monk) Maznicki, from this set up at our cabin a few years back. It is in well-loved condition and I got a real kick out of it hiding in a locker for 40 years! In April of =E298, my folks had to sell the cabin. The card now serves a dual purpose -- as a reminder of the greats of the game, and of the cabin I so dearly loved as a child. I've decided to (slowly) build the set in VG or less condition... my only pre-'50 set for any sport/nonsport! My only desire regarding condition is to be able to read the text on the back and see the picture on the front. This is a want list of MINNESOTA NORTH Stars, as I finally found a team checklist book for hockey. Long embittered by their move to Dallas, I=E2=99m finally reconciling that I *did* indeed love them as a kid and the memories of names like Gump, Goldie, Parise, and Hextall bring back more smiles than tears. Time to add them to my collection. *Please* do not torment me, however, with cards of the Dallas Stars, as they will ever be a reminder of the traitorous rat, Norm Greed, er, Green, who sold out on the best hockey state this side of Canada (I expect to hear boos from you New Englanders! ) Anyway, onto my WANTLIST! 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee: 45 46 47 48 50 51 52 53 54 55 146 147 148 149 161 1968-69 Topps: 45 47 48 49 50 52 53 54 55 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee: 121 122 123 124 125 126 127 128 129 130 131 194 195 196 1969-70 Topps: 121 122 123 124 125 126 129 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee: 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 166 167 168 169 170 171 172 173 1970-71 Topps: : 40 41 45 46 47 48 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee: 21 32 44 55 68 79 101 117 128 238 239 240 241 242 243 244 1971-72 Topps: 32 44 68 79 101 1971-72 Topps Story Booklets: Have #=E2=99s 11 21 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee: 10 28 47 57 75 101 118 138 159 178 199 225 246 267 289 1972-73 Topps: DONE!! 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee: 46 62 99 109 115 125 127 174 190 214 230 246 264 1973-74 Topps: 99 125 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee: 26 31 52 83 96 115 134 174 203 220 234 238 255 291 308 325 346 363 1974-75 Topps: 220 234 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee: 16 34 53 71 89 106 124 143 161 180 197 222 239 261 277 310 335 353 371 1975-76 Topps: 16 89 106 143 161 180 239 261 277 310 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee: 13 34 49 73 87 103 123 140 156 169 173 184 198 249 263 317 327 357 1976-77 Topps: DONE! I don't know whether this belongs more as a ramble or on the wantlist server, but I think I'll at least start it here. While updating my old card wantlist, I was surprised at how close a few sets were to one another in their bid for completion. Since this is a time of year when we all love to do prognosticating and handicapping, I thought I'd try to do that with the race toward completion for my wantlists. The different races and my analysis of each look like this: In the "Classics" division, there's a great competition going on between the '55 Bowman and the '58 Topps set, each with only 44 cards left to go. Both have some of the big hitters left in their lineup, with the Bowman set sporting that pesky Yankee trio of the Mick, Whitey and Scooter. Al Kaline, Ernie Banks, and the incomparable Hank Aaron comprise the other heavy hitters for the TV set. Fourteen of the 44 from Bowman are the beloved Umpires (aack!) and 38 of the 44 are from the high series (double-aack!). In the other corner, the '58 Topps, counter with #1, Teddy Ballgame and a slew of superstars includingMays, Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, Banks, Berra, and both Robinsons. All-Star versions of the Mantle and Williams, rookie cards of Maris and Cepeda, a couple tough team cards (Yanks and Braves) and the awesome World Series Foes sporting Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle make this set the darkhorse in the race. ADVANTAGE: '55 BOWMAN. In the "Mod Division", a race is heating up between the '68 Topps (15 to go), the '73 Topps (19 to go). Since the '68 Topps is still missing the rookie card of the greatest flamethrower of this era (Ryan), it would seem that despite having four more cards to go, the '73 would be a hands-down favorite. However, what complicates matters it that I have *no* condition requirements for the '68 set while the '73 set is in pretty decent shape. With the presence of the Schmidt rookie and regular issues of Ryan, Mays, and Bench,I actually predict that the '68 Topps will be completed first. ADVANTAGE: '68 TOPPS In the "Disco Division", three sets are all vying for honors of being "first done". The contenders include the Topps sets from '74, '75, and '77. Key cards from the '74 set include the Winfield rookie and 3 Aaron Home Run King cards (including #1). They seem to match fairly evenly against the '75 set, where George Brett and Robin Yount rookies remain along with regular issues of Ryan and Rose. The 1977 set, however, should fold first, with only the Dawson rookie, Nolan Ryan and Pete Rose providing any challenge. ADVANTAGE: '77 TOPPS. Finally, in the "Small Set" Division, an even race is taking place between the 1969 Topps Deckle and the 1970 Topps Posters, each with a mere three to go. The Deckles are missing one of the variations, Jim Wynn, and superstars Clemente and Rose while the '70 Posters also include Clemente, with Pete Rose and Rod Carew completing their trio. The Deckles are seen at some card shows, while the posters usually are stashed back behind tables, taking away any advantage they may have gained from being a bit less expensive. So like the All-Star Game of 2001, it is, indeed a tie. ADVANTAGE: NONE. Thanks to all of you who have made these sets nearer to completion... it's more than I ever dreamed possible. To: OBC-Wantlist@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... as long as I'm burning up the server with wantlists today, I may as well make sure that all of my lists are out and current. This is the list for my boy, Ben, future major league all-star catcher! Thanks... Jim Wiehe 414 North 118th Plaza #1 Omaha, NE 68154 As you all have heard, no doubt by now, Ben seems to have a passion for catching and catchers. I don't know whether it's the unique gear, the action, or what, but he has always freaked when we find catchers gear in a store and has laid claim to my catcher's mitt at home. In the picture atthe top of his webpage, he was donning the mitt and crouching in front of the TV, pretending to catch the balls that the pitcher on the tube was throwing and then feigning a return toss back to him. This has led to my main collecting project for him. I'd love to put together a collection of ONE card of each catcher who has appeared on a baseball card. By limiting it to ONE card of each, I can pick the best pose for each player. To date, we have over 300 different catchers represented! I would prefer that the poses include the gear that fascinates Ben. Of course, if there's only one card out there of someone or if they only have a couple and they all show portraits or batting poses, that will be Post-1900 Catchers we need a card of (preferably in catcher's gear... not a batting picture) Abbott, Fred Adams, Bert Adlesh, Dave Agnew, Sam Ainsmith, Eddie Alexander, Gary Alexander, Walt Allen, Nick Allietta, Bob Anderson, Ferrell Anderson, Jim Does that rule still exist? Anyway, I searched the Yahoo archives for this list and it looks like I haven't posed a wantlist since May of 2002. Cards in *any* condition gratefully accepted. Today, I've added it to the wantlist. I'm also considering adding other non-sports to the list, like the Topps Look 'n See and Presidents (the '56 series) cards, and perhaps Freedom's War. As an avid history buff, these sets are right down my alley. For now, the non-sports stuff will occupy the very bottom of my wantlist page. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. To view my online wantlist, visit: http://www.geocities.com/chrisstufflestreet/wantlist.html Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
