In our previous episode our hero MARK TALBOT, performed another amazing RAOK with an end of the year assault on OBC wantlists everywhere. In addition to the 58T he sent to the House of Maxwell, he sends a couple cards that look like the 58 only newer. I think I may have a better chance of finishing the vintage set before the tough Topps Heritage sets or the UD Goudey set which Mark also manages to hit. Thanks again Mark for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Mark my words you are a first ballot inductee into the OBC HOF. As the first OBCer I ever met, you certainly got me off on the right FOOT. May 2008 be a healthy and happy year for all OBCers and their families! Ken Goetsch must be my card-collecting twin - one day before I decide to post my newly-created 1982 Donruss, Ken does the exact same thing. Actaully, I originally decided to post the entire 80's run of Fleer & Donruss & I needed but thought better of it. I have a grand total of 5 sets that I have about 100-150 of, so instead of listing every 80's set, I decided to start small. So,here's my 1982 Donruss wantlist. I've been thinking about this for a while, but wasn't sure how to "propose" the idea to everyone. Seeing as how we're starting a new year, I thought I'd throw out a crazy idea: I'd like to start an organized process for sending out UV cards to each other, and scratching off some of our wantlists (I'm thinking about doing the same thing on the vintage side as well). I'd like to have others join in the fun, so any ideas or help would be appreciated. But even if no one else participates, I'm gonna give it a go, and see what I can offer. Here's how I see it: Each week (or so), we "feature" a particular year of cards. I will list all my availables from that year, as well as any wantlists I have for that same year. Anyone else who wishes to participate is welcome to do the same. I would think it would be better to do this directly through the server, so everyone has access to the wantlists and availables. I feel so far behind in what I send out versus what everyone sends me, and I've definitely not been very organized with my collection. I wanted to come up with something that was going to (for lack of a better term) FORCE me to get it in gear, get organized, and (hopefully) send out a few thousand cards. So... I'm starting with 1981 and working forward. Listed below is my 1981 available overview and as a few things I'd like to find. We may hit some pretty "slack" years a few weeks down the road, where some of us have loads of dupes and no wantlists (or maybe vice versa), but when there's no activity for a while, we'll just move on to the next year. I'm not by any means advocating that we don't trade other years of stuff, just that we have a "featured" year that we're working with. What do you think? Here goes... ************************************************** AVAILABLES: ************************************************** 1981 DONRUSS: 5 9 13 27 47 57 58 59 83 140 141 154 158 162 164 181 183 185 211 218 223 236 238 241 243 244 247 261 263 267 268 269 270 271 277 286 351 365 387 418 445 445 450 488 538 589. 1981 FLEER: 9 18 22 52 59 69 74 115 163 205 302 334 334 362 503 503 545 545 591 617. 1981 TOPPS: several hundred available. REGARDS --------------------- MARK -------------- Original message -------------- From: "uthminsta1" Hey everyone, I've got an idea. I also added some additional lists that were not previously listed and I am ready to hit all those lists. I have (2) 5000 count boxes of `81 Topps (still not collated – but I’m working on it) and about 400 `81 Fleer and 500 `81 Donruss dupes for Baseball. REGARDS --------------------- MARK ================= Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2008 15:36:02 -0000 To: uvlist@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: Opinions/answers requested - 1981 Fleer variations Hi all, I've been stumped on some of the 1981 Fleer variations. There are really three questions I have, but for this post I'll stick to just one: Regarding the cards that have a variation listed as "small finger (or hand) on back (or front)" - I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. However, I made a trip to a card store & picked through the 81 Fleer box, looking for multiple cards of those finger/no finger versions, and I think I MAY have come up with what the variation is: on the back of the card, at the bottom right border, there appears to be a couple of squiggly lines, which I suppose could be interpreted as a hand or finger. For those of you working on this set, I've posted a closeup of the finger/squiggly/hand in the Photos section of the Yahoo UV server.(I created a 1981 Fleer variations folder, so feel free to add any scans that you'd like). The particular card is the Cey card. The other cards listed as having the varion (at least the ones I have) have the identical marking, & I also have seen & have some without this marking, thus making me think that this is what the variation is. Please take a look & see if I'm on to something here, or if I'm way off base. Thanks! According to the database file on the Variations site & the checklist on the OBC site, two variations are listed as saying "Pirates" on the back. What's the difference between these two? I have a couple of dupes that say Pirates on the back, but I don't see any other difference. 2) This one gets tricky, & it involves a few different cards: 483 Amos Otis - an 81 Fleer checklist on the OBC site says 483 Amos Otis portrait - see card 32. Does this mean there is no 483 portrait - that it's mis-numbered as 32 (I have a portrait numbered 32.)? Or is there an actual Otis portrait with 483 on the back? 640 Schmidt portrait #5 on back - again, is the 640 portrait merely mis-numbered, or is there actually a card numbered 640 with a portrait? Three other cards with similar notations are Jackson, McGraw, & Brett from the 650's. Anyone have any answers about these? Please feel free to post scans if you have them. Many thanks, Tom ================= Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2008 13:03:49 EST To: uvlist@yahoogroups.com From: kwg0@aol.com Subject: Thanks Just cleaned up my desk and found these. I wanted to come back with an update on the year-by-year project. Specifically, I wanted to share my thoughts on the pace. There were several people who talked about going faster or going slower, and no two people seemed to have exactly the same idea on the "perfect speed" to proceed. When I first came up with the idea, I was going to stick with each year for about a week. That would have meant "catching up" to the current year in mid-July on the UV side, at which time the vintage side would have made it back to 1953. Then there would be a few more weeks with just the vintage side working further back. I thought the activity would probably be less and less the further back we went, since less people are able to collect prewars, 19th century cards, etc. So I thought the remaining guys could determine their own pace once it got that far back. Heck, once we reach 1968, I don't have a whole lot more to offer - just bigger and bigger wantlists! So anyway, I thought 6-8 months was a LOT of time to allow for a project which, at the time, I had no idea whether people would want to participate in. I've since found out that there are many who are on board, on both the UV and vintage sides, and I am pretty excited about that. My idea worked! (in more ways than one!) As I said, I was originally going to go at about a week at a time. But I think maybe a LITTLE slower might encourage a few more people to dig out their dupes and participate. So at least for the time being, I'm going to move forward with the project, bringing each new year into light... ON THE FIVES. That means every 5th, 15th, and 25th (or so) we add a new year. That gives more than a week for each year to be discussed, but not so much more that people are waiting to move on. If you're ahead of the pack, when you've finished organizing your cards, LOOK at 'em a little. If you're behind, do what I do and pull out 3-4 years at a time and organize them to be ready for the next year. And that reminds me - there are some who have said it would take a lot of work to get their stuff organized, and if we were moving forward too quickly, they would just drop out. But this project wasn't meant to be the only stuff going on, so everyone is ALWAYS free to proceed at their own pace. (Thanks Aaron for stating the obvious) You could just post a few years at once if you're behind. Or take a while and get organized then post whatever you want. I'm not by any means saying your posts shouldn't include any other years. I hope that all sounded right. I'm not trying to take over, I just want to provide some new structure for those who want to go along with it. Starting ON THE FIVES will allow each stage to start on a different day of the week, and allow for different people to be there to kick off each year. Some people have more time on the weekends, others (like me) sometimes have rather busy weekends (overnight youth trips, church, etc) and the occasional lighter day during the week. This pace, if we stick to it, will catch us up to 2008 by the end of October, so as the project is wrapping up, we can all watch (bet on) the postseason together, and then start looking for our OBC Santa stuff. Yeah, almost a whole year for this project. I'm sure there will be times when a certain year (late 90's for instance) will not have a whole lot of stuff available or something like that, and we can always adjust accordingly. One other thing. If you've read this far, cool. Thanks. But I thought it might be good to give the project an official name. I'm going with the subject of this post. PROJECT 1982. And next time it will be called PROJECT 1983, etc. 1982... Let's get started! Valacak" Subject: 81 Donruss thanks FIrst of all, I would like to say thanks to everyone for helping to knock down this 81 donruss set. I posted the set last Thursday, and I needed 70 cards. You guys have really laid the hammer down. THe first arrivals came today. SAL DOMINO sends a three pack with Buddy Bell, Kent Tekulve, and Floyd Bannister. For some reason, Tekulve scared me as a kid. I think it was the sidearm delivery. Bannister would become a White Sox and play a major role on their 83 team. Thanks Sal! TOM HOUSLEY sends over a nice four pack. Steve Garvey, Jeff Reardon, John Tudor, and Dwight Evans. I love Evans. Without officially naming an HOMer, mine would be Evans. I am not sure if he qualifies because he played well into the 80's, but he was great. What an arm he had in RF. Tom includes a note saying that these are the thinnest cards out there. He says that if I hold them close to a light, I can see right through them. Tom, you are correct. Those backs are very readible next to the light. Thanks for the cards and the laugh. Finally, BILL ASHTON sends over a 7 pack. He hits my 84 donruss set with a Lee Smith, and then pounds my 81 donruss set with six; Parker, Burroughs, FosterJenkins, Garvey, Fingers. Quick Foster story. Late in his career, I think 86, he was sent over to the White Sox. I was on hand to see his very first White Sox homer. Maybe that doesn't sound too exciting now, but at that time, I had been collecting cards since 1978. He was the first player I knew to knock out over 50 homers. I knew that because I would read the stats and study the leader cards. I can still remember feeling a bit awestruck to have seen the great George Foster go deep. Thank you Bill! Great job guys. Thanks! The 3000+ `82 Fleers still need work and I will not likely make my self imposed deadline of Feb 1 for that one but I will do my best to get it posted in the coming days. Keep on keepin' on!!! BE WELL!!! REGARDS ---------------------- MARK
