From: Gary Mandell Before I get dragged off to the annual family NYE party, I wanted to get this out now that the NFL Playoff picture is set (special congrats to the Buffalo Bills for ending a 17 year playoff drought). Once again, I am going to be running an NFL playoff pool for all those interested. It is a very fun format where you always have one playeractive from each team in each game.We have had over a dozenparticipants for severalyears, and hope to exceed that total this year. We have several signed up already. This year will be a cash only tournament, and the entry fee is $5. You may only submit one entry. For those who have never played fantasy football, this may seem a bit complicated. But once you read how to pick a team, you will see it isn't all that tough. And if your home town or other favorite teamis out of it (Bears and Browns for me), it at least keeps the playoffs interesting! The playoff schedule looks like this: AFC Week 1 (January 6 and 7):6 Bills at 3 Jaguars on Sunday @ 1EST, 5 Titans at 4 Chiefs on Saturday @ 4:35 EST, 1 Patriots and 2 Steelers AFC Week 2 (January 13 and 14):1 Patriots at home vs. lowest seeded Week One winner, 2 Steelers at home vs. highest seeded Week One winner AFC Week 3 (January 21):Week 2 winners at home of highest remaining NFC Week 1 (January 6 and 7):6 Falcons at 3 Rams on Saturday @8:15 EST, 5 Panthers at 4 Saints on Sunday @4:40 EST, 1 Eagles and 2 VikingsBYE NFC Week 2 (January 13 and 14):1 Eagles at home vs. lowest seeded Week One winner, 2 Vikings at home vs. highest seeded Week One winner NFC Week 3 (January 21):Week 2 winners at home of highest remaining Super Bowl Week 4 (February 4):Super Bowl The weekend of January 6-7 marks the start of our playoff pool. Here is how it works. Teams:Select a team of 12 players from the 12 teams in the playoffs.Your team must have 1, and only 1 player from each team and you are allowed exactly 2 QB=E2=99s, 4 RB=E2=99s, 4 WR=E2=99s, 1TE, and 1 K (there are no defenses or special teams in the pool). In each game, every participant will have one player going from each team. Rank your players 1 through 12, with 1 being the player you think will score the most points overall throughout the playoffs, and 12 being the player you think will score the least points. These rankings are only used as a tiebreaker between prize winners if necessary. Submit your roster to me like this:QB Dawson KC (4), QB Staubach DAL (2), RB Davis DEN (1), RB Warner SEA (12), etc., with the number in parenthesis being your personal ranking of the player. Passing:Touchdown 4 points, Yardage 1 point for every 25 passing yards, 2 points for a completed passing 2 point conversion, -2 points foran interception, - 2 points for a fumble Rushing and Receiving:Touchdown 6 points, Yardage 1 point for every 10 yards, 1 point for every catch, 2 points for a completed rushing orreceiving 2 point conversion, -2 points for a fumble Kicking:Field Goals:<31 yards @ 3 points, >30yards @ 0.1 points per yard.Missed (including bad snap) or Blocked FG1-39 yards -2 points, 40-49 yards -1 point.PAT1 point, missed PAT (for any reason unless a pass or run results in a conversion) -1 point There are NO points awarded for Defensive scores, including returning a kickoff, punt failed field goal, PAT or 2 point conversions for a touchdown ora Remember, four NFL teams will have 1st round byes, and could potentially play one less game than the other eight teams. The winner is determined by total points scored by their roster over the entire playoff season(four Tie Breaker:Since there is a possibility that more than one team can have the exact same players and/or total score, ties will be broken by the total points of the player with the # 1 ranking from each entry. If still tied, than # 2 will be used and so on until the tie is broken. Prizes (subject to change based on number of entries):Overall winner will get 60% of the prize pool, 2nd place gets 30% and 3rd place gets10%. I hope to have rosters/rankings out before kickoff of the first game on Saturday, especially if I get your rosters early.Weekly results will be sent out as an Excel spreadsheet attachment in an email, usually on Sunday night, but in any case, Monday before noon. Please let me know if you have any questions BEFORE the roster deadline. Deadline: Your roster picks and $5 entry fee via PayPal Friends and Family (or Zelle Quick Pay) must be submitted to me via email (smartalecx@aol.com) no later than Saturday, January 6 at Noon Central Time.Once your team is submitted, it cannot be changed.(if you do nothave Paypal or Zelle, please email me in advance to make other arrangements). I'm looking forward to the pool, and wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy New Year! From: Aaron Shirley I'm gonna talk a bit (channeling Morganti here) about my thoughts on 1988 cards. I'd also really like to hear what you all think about issues from that year. I'll go first. I always had a little different view of "vintage" than many others in this group. That is because, among other reasons, I was actually in junior high in the late 80's, when all that junk wax was coming out. Case in point: 1987-88 was my 7th grade year. And if you're not collecting baseball cards in 7th grade, what in the world is wrong with you? So let's come back to today. It's 2018. To a 43-year old, a card that is 30years old is actually... old... right? Vintage? Certainly. Haha, just kidding. I'm perfectly aware that I am the ONLY one who even kind of thinks this way. But some of you probably noticed I've been adding stuff to my UV list this way for several years. New years 2012? Add 1982. Now it's 2013? Add 1983. And now we come to 2018. Minus thirty is 1988. 1988. Yeah, I know. Probably the apex of the junk wax era. Do I really want to collect full sets of 1988 Donruss and Fleer? Probably not. But are there cards from 1988 I really like? Absolutely. Every new yearI take a look at all the sets that are newly 30 years old. Here's a rundown of everything I'm looking at right now. Kind of in order of how much I like 1. My absolute favorite 1988 set is Pacific Legends. I have a decent start on 2.3.4. Bazooka, Drake's and Nestle are almost nonexistent in my collection but are all set designs I reeeally like. 5.6.7. Topps Big, Coins and Stickers. A little easier Topps oddballs. Just fun. 8. Score stands alone as it is already finished except for variations. 9.10.11. Goudey, Playball, World Wide Sports. On these throwback sets, I'm just looking for St. Louis players and a few other favorite guys. But because of the more vintage nature of these, I may change my mind if I ever get my hot little hands on some. 12.13.14. At this point it comes down to Donruss, Fleer and Sportflics. I will probably just do the Cardinals for those sets. Meh, I don't know. X. I've already finished Topps, including variations. Might need to check that for gremlins since it's been so many years. So there they are. Fourteen 1988 sets. And there's plenty others out there,as we all know. Might add one. Might delete one. I've reordered this list several times since the new year. The only thing certain is that Pacific Legends stays on the top of the list. If I only finish one 1988 set in 2018, I'd like it to be Pacific. To that end, I've listed that wantlist below. And Topps Big since it's almost 90% done. 1988 PACIFIC LEGENDS: 1 2 4 6 7 9 10 11 16 17 18 19 22 23 25 27 28 29 30 32-43 46 47 48 49 52 53 54 55 56 57 60 61 62 64-72 74 75 76 81 82 83 85 87 90-101 103 104 107 109 110. I'll say it again: I'd like to hear what you think of 1988 cards. Good, bad, or indifferent. From: Ken M    I'm gonna be the raincloud on this walk in the sunshine. By 1988, my teenage years were in the rear view mirror. I had long since become disgusted with the saturation of the baseball card market. Every Tom, Dick and Harry was putting out some set of sports cards (and it was only going to get worse in 1989) and I wasn't going to chase after any of them... except Topps. Even those were kinda blah looking. I think this is about when my vintage card collecting really began to take hold. I had already purchased complete sets from 1973-1976 (I started collectin in 1977.) and was trying to put together sets from 70-72 the hard way, card by card. So why spend my money on cards that I don't care about, when there were all these great players from the Golden Age of baseball (in my eyes anyway)?  Then in 1992 Topps put one of the final nails in their UV coffin for me: they switched to the thinner stock like the 1981 Donruss set and the collation was completely awful. I bought four boxes and still needed 30-40 cards when I sorted them out - years later.  About the only good thing about the 1988 cards is that you can probaby buy them cheaper now than you could 30 years ago 😊 Ken M Sent from my not so smart phone. http://kenmorganti.weebly.com ------ Original message------From: b_betza@yahoo.com [uvlist] Date: Mon, Jan 8, 2018 10:21 PMTo: uvlist@yahoogroups.com;Cc: Subject:Re: [uvlist] 1988. Shortly after Christmas the fam went to Target to return a pair of headphones Ruthie got that didn't work. We got a gift card and shopped around a little bit, and I ended up at the baseball cards. I bought one of those repackaged deals that had ten packs for $12, partly just to grab some random packs to rip, and partly to use the gift card because we don't have a Target inour Two things of note in the box. There was a 2017 Topps series 1 pack and it had an Aaron Judge. Neat. And second, there was actually a pack of 1988 Donruss! I chuckled to myself and thought simply "alright, vintage, haha." I think it might have had a Mark Gubicza in it. If I recall correctly, every single pack of 1988 Donruss had a Mark Gubicza? Anyone else remember that way? Ahhhhh, 1988 Donruss.
