So, to do something different, I will open them in random order as I type this. First up--Patrick Prickett! Well, the note starts out that these are from a Dukie. Not sure how to take it--I really like Coach Cutcliffe and the way the runs the football team, but I am no fan of the foul-mouthed Coach K and his One and Dne U products. But, I have been extremely impressed by the folks at their hospital that I have dealt with, and also am a fan of OPC cards, and Patrick sends 4--a 69, 2 66's and a 65 of Jack Fisher. Next up, Sean McGowan: Sean also sends a great OPC card--a 68 of the "hit" machine, Ron Hunt! I like this OPC theme. Batting third--Spike: The OPC theme continues, with a 65 Bill Rigney, but Spike also includes a 56 white back of Alvin Dark (hmm, a manager theme?) and a 63 Canadian Post of John Romano. Cleanup--Matt Yudt! Once again, more OPCs! This time 7 shiny 1972's, including former Phillie Grant Jackson, and the best hitting catcher not to even sniff the HOF--Ted Simmons. Batting 5th, Bob Donaldson: 5 for 5 on OPCs! This time a full dozen of the 1973 variety, including some guys named Brooks Robinson and Luis Aparicio! Last, but certainly not least, Mark Talbot from Michigan way: Well, Despite the fact that Mark probably lives closer to Canada than any of the other 5, no OPCs! But, all is forgiven, as Mark sends a wonderful and eclectic envelope containing Bowman's from 1955--umpire WF McKinley, a 54 Daryl Spencer, a 53 Joe Adcock and a 53B&W of Irv Noren. Then he tossed in two Play Balls--from 39 and 40. And, to make the package complete, 2 1975 McDonald's "Get a quarter back" cars of Joe Ferguson and Terry Bradshaw (only problem with them is that the offer for the 25 cents back expired before they got here--it was only good till mid-October, of 1975! To that end allow me to thank: Bob Donaldson gets a `73-74 OPC Hockey card of Dan Maloney into my possession and ships it with a couple YAZ cards for the hero binder. The `76 SSPC card and a Little League card I have never seen before. From the back of the card were you aware that the Little League World Series was first televised in 1963 on ABC and is the second longest transmission of a sporting event - COOL STUFF. Thanks Bob!!! Peter Mead rescues the USPS who destroyed an earlier mailing by sending a second offering featuring a single from the late `60's Tresler Comet Cincinnati Bengals set (Andy Rice). I've never seen these nor are they listed in my Football Digest but they obviously exist. To think had the USPS not messed up I'd be collecting the set with this mailing. Peter also includes a pair of `74 McDonalds San Diego Padres Discs (McCovey & Winfield) - WOW!!! Thanks to Peter for the second effort and continuing the "never ending trade"!!!! Peter Mead again uses the USPS to ship off a WAuction item - I was the lucky winner of a `64 Kahn's card of Joey Jay. The first major league game I attended was in 1964 at Crosley Field and my Dad took me to see Joey Jay pitch, I remember Pete Rose led off the game w/a home run, and Jay won the game. For some reason the kids in the neighborhood really liked Joey Jay, it must have been the merits of back to back 21 win seasons in `61 & `62 and not the 7-18 season he posted in `63. Thanks Peter really appreciated!!! Rob Bessette for some Red Sox items with greater explanation elsewhere. Thank you for including me with the mass mailing Rob!!! Joel is not afraid to tackle new sets. This time it is the huge Sportscasters set that we are both pursuing. Joel really dents my list by sending me a box of 124 Sportscaster cards. The photography and styles have that late 70s look, and the back descriptions can be interesting. You get to learn more about Gaelic football, cricket, the modern pentathlon, and sled dog racing. The one dressage card got me to thinking about the criteria for counting sports cards. Dressage involves precise movements by your horse. So are we counting the horse in our sports cards? I decided that the horse has to be ridden by someone and that someone has to train the horse sort of like counting a card of a football coach or baseball manager. Plus the person is leading the horse around. Anyway dressage cards must count. I may now have 100% of the dressage sports cards in existence with my one card, all thanks to JOEL FREEDMAN. There is also a card of a guy who set off from Casablanca in a raft, an inflatable dinghy, with no food or water. He had only a small fine-meshed net to catch fish and plankton. He stayed out there for 113 days and lived to tell about it. My family will forever be in debt to the many OBC members that participated in an auction that benefited the DZK Memorial Foundation. You should know that 1 of the youngsters the Foundation sent to Red Berenson's Hockey Camp would eventually play for U of M. From: Wayne Delia Very sorry to let these thanks go so long (son Joseph has moved out of the house into his own apartment, leaving Kelly & me with a 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom "empty nest"). So let's get to This Week in OBC Thanks... RICH LYONS sends some great stuff: a Topps 1969-70 Basketball Tall Boy of Joe Ellis from the San Francisco Warriors, and TWO beautiful 1960-62 Fleer Team Decals of the White Sox and Dodgers. These are nice-looking decals that are theoretically relatively inexpensive but extremely hard to find on eBay or at card shows. Been working on these sets for a long time! JAMES CRAIG sends - WOW! - sorry, I still do a double-take when I look at these. Two 1967 cards, one of the young Cardinals ace pitcher, Bob Gibson, who came in 4th place in the NL for strikeouts, which I know because the second card is the Topps 1967 NL Strikeout Leaders card, featuring the league strikeout leader, Sandy Koufax. Beautiful cards! CHUCK SALEK sends two "Early (1960's) Birds" cards of Baltimore Orioles players Walt Dropo from Topps 1961, and Jim Gentile from Topps 1963, in near-razor-sharp condition. I once won a radio trivia contest on WGHQ-AM in Kingston, NY when I knew that Walt Dropo held a share of the major league record for getting 12 consecutive hits. Very colorful and very much needed ED SCHOTT keeps my schedule collection up to date with not one but two envelopes of mostly Orioles schedules with a 1987 Cleveland Browns sked thrown in for good measure. Whatever the '87 Browns record was, they did better than the '17 Browns. If you're at a National swap session, and Ed staggers up to you and offers a shot of vodka, don't turn him down, because he has some great taste in distilled spirits. Thanks, buddy! How 'bout that Kid? JAKE ELWELL sends a trio of early 1960's Yankees (1962 Jake Gibbs, 1963 Clete Boyer and Ralph Terry) to go along with a beautiful 1962 Bob Rodgers rookie card. Gotta tell you the story behind these cards. Wife Kelly goes out to get the mail, brings in the familiar long envelope with the picture of Jake's batter bunting on the front, raises an eyebrow, and heads off to the kitchen. I open the envelope, saw the tough Yankee cards, and silently punched the air, whispering "Yes!" - not realizing she's now back at the door of my collection room. She asked me if I was eleven years old, or what. The funny part is I did the exact same thing when I got a handshake from Taylor Shock while sitting at a food court table at last year's National. I punched the air and whispered "Yes!" when I realized a total stranger woman was looking at me, she smiled, and said "I can relate to that." Thanks very much, guys! ================= Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2018 16:29:39 -0400 To: Obv-thanks Subject: Thanks Mike part 1 From: Ron H MIKE GLASSER sends the large envelope with a couple 64 giants and a couple footballers including 1968 Blanda. It's the short-print variation (short because the "Big League Chewing Gum" banner at the bottom is neatly trimmed off) which features Farrell in his team uniform. An interlocking NY is written in on his cap, and the lettering "New York" is now featured on what was normally a blank-front uniform on the more common version of the card. What really stands out is Farrell is holding a bat over his right shoulder, which would normally obscure the "N" in "New York", but evidently the uniform manufacturer obliged by putting the "N" on the uniform right sleeve. Joe Denning and his wife LaShelle were in town today and met up with Mike Rich and I at a local steak house - no one in our party got steak (interesting!!!). They were both looking great and the conversation ranged from grand-kids and family to plans for Strongsville. The Dennings trips to the Detroit area are always a great reason for an OBC get together - Big Fun!!! Joe Issac came to town on Monday and Mike and I met him at the Applebee's near Metro Detroit Airport and we enjoyed great conversation and camaraderie. I ended up with free wings and suds thanks to Joe's expense account. Well worth leaving work early for - Great to see you again Joe!!! The aforementioned Mike Rich had goodies for me each of our meetings this week. On Monday, Mike handed over some TCMA fodder with (2) from the 1975 `54 Indians set, a single from the `73 Sport Scoops set, and another single from the 1974 `40's League Leaders set. Mike also included a `74-75 Topps Basketball sticker (Squire-Rockets), and a later Fleer Basketball card. Today, more TCMA cards with another from the 40's League Leaders, one from the 20's League Leaders, and a tough one of Lou Gehrig from the `36-39 Yankee Dynasty set. Mike also included a `74 Fleer HOF FB card and a `39 Playball card of Red Ruffing. Way too kind my friend - great to hang out like old times this week. OBC Friendly dealer Mike Sandles met up with Mike yesterday at a local card show and dropped a few off for me. I received a pair of `66 Fleer Drysdale puzzle cards bringing that list down to (6) cards. Thanks Mike & Mike!!! Meanwhile, Mike Glasser slips me a waiver wire claim of the Deer Island Lighthouse from the pre-war Lighthouse Series. I haven't seen a hit to that list in quite some time so Thanks Mike!!! At the end of the school day I began Spring break and will be staying close to home for the next 10 days - I expect to get some hobby time in and continue sending things out. Thanks to all the above mentioned OBC'ers as well as all of you out there. Happy Easter - Happy Passover!!!!
