From: chris tripler I have been keeping up with OBC, very peripherally, because of a big project that I'm working on that I will reveal shortly to the OBC nation. But, the cards have continued to roll in, and I need to give thanks in a big way... Usually, when there's a big gap in time like this I would just bundle all the thanks. But, a couple times during my tenure in OBC, you just have to sit down and contemplate what just happened. Yesterday was one of those days...and for the new members, it's this type of stuff that just makes OBC the leader in the goodness of card collecting! FATHER PAT WATTINGNY, during a period of card sharing rapture, stuffed a flat containing some very excellent conditioned cards that deserve a special thanks. FATHER PAT started off by pulling 12, 1961 Fleers of very fine condition, knocking our WL from 58 to 46, which is as much as any given year we've collected for this set. Thank you!!! Then, there's the nine cards remaining for Dad & I's 1964 set, and of course, most of them are the HOF or the high value cards. So, it's typical when you get down to the last couple of cards, a collectors option turn to card shows, eBay, or COMC (or others). But, open an OBC envelope and you can be surprised...and the last year has been an exceptionally generous year in the annals of OBC...yesterday was keeping in that vain. FATHER PAT provided a second year Pete Rose & Willie Mays! WHAT?!?! Yes, I said Pete Rose and Willie Mays...and not your typical OBC stock, these weremajor keepers...Wow! Just, wow! Talk about your disproportional return fire. Thank you, thank you, thank you FATHER PAT! Your generosity is an inspiration! Thank you! JAKE "the Kid" Brewer needs to be thanked for his efforts to get me some waivered '68s but the post office in its recent show of incompentancy, but contriteness, stuffed the empty Brewer envelope into a Post office envelope telling me they're sorry. Better to have saved the branch of the tree to make the envelope and let me just wonder about it. Thank you, JAKE! I appreciate the effort. Finally, my mentor and an infinite source of card collecting inspiration, sends up a 25 Year anniversary in OBC Sal Domino HOF original, yahoo!!! From: directorth@aol.com ================= To: Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2018 18:58:56 -0500 Subject: Bob Donaldson From: "Mark Holland" Being the "vote-meister" this year I have to be careful accepting RAOKs (political gifts) from candidates on the ballot. One could suggest "collusion" in the election process if this was allowed to take place. I spoke with my comrade (uh counselor) Boris at the GRUMP TOWER and he said that Bob Donaldson was not running on the ballot and that this ROAK should not be considered a political attempt to sway the ballot box. I could see a hanging edge on the trimmed 61 Billy Martin but Boris assured me that this was not a hanging chad; only a poor effort on trimming the Martin card. So after careful scrutiny I would like to THANK!!!!... ...Bob Donaldson for 4 hits to my '61T set. Along with the afore mentioned Martin card were team cards of the Red Sox & Yankees along with a world series card. Much appreciated Bob. I am glad that it passed the inspection of my certified special agent Boris and his supervisor Ivan. They are both Americans although both forgot their IDs today. But they look American and I don't think that they would lie about it. Ivan said that he has connections with politicians with more secure private servers that we could use for future elections. He said that he monitors those servers continuously and could get us set up pretty easily next year. We sure are lucky to have people like Ivan & Boris manning our OBC election security team. Can you imagine if someone hacked in and made Toppsaholic a voting member? But I still can't figure out who voted for Igor..but I digress. Thanks Bob! That was fun! And some chili. And Cheesecake. We resumed early Saturday morning at my house for pancakes before heading off together to the card show in Salisbury NC. Now while Jake is self proclaimed "The Kid", he actually is several years older than Cade. However, both their ages added together are less than mine so I think it is fair to collectively refer to them as young'uns. So if you want to know what it was like for the three of us spending the day together picture it like two rambunctious kids saying things like "How many more miles?" "He's poking me" "Can I buy this?" and "I'm hungry - when are we going to eat?". That was them. Then pictured a grizzled old man, slightly stooped over, with bony fingers saying "Put that down", "Don't make me pull over" and "We will eat when I say it is time to eat". That would basically be Actually, it wasn't really like that at all. OBC would do well to have more 'young'uns' like Jake and Cade. A big thanks to Jake for a nifty 1949 Sam Mele card, from way back before he managed my beloved Twins. Cade passed on a 66 semi high number, a trio of 62s and a pair of 1959 football cards. Much appreciated! The card show was packed with people and had plenty of vintage dealers to keep us busy. I definitely spent the least of the three of us but did manage to grab a pair of 54 Red Hearts, including the Spahn, so I guess I am officially collecting that set soon. I am trying to focus on a few sets I am close to finishing, but it was not working yesterday. I found one of the six remaining 1958 Topps cards I need, and only one of the last ten 1964 Topps. From: bskp1@aol.com ================= Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2018 02:21:07 +0000 (UTC) To: "Thanks (OBC)" Subject: Appreciations, although that doesn't come close to cutting it. From: Geordie Calvert Good evening, OBC. So I have some thanks to pass out. The vast majority of them are so long overdue that it borders on disgraceful. I'll be posting a ramblings at some point after I send this out that will address some of what's going on here in central California. However, nothing I will say there excuses my tardiness for the generosity sent my way. Suffice it to say that I'm more than ashamed at how ungrateful I've been. So, on to the thanks - honestly I will be seeing almost all of these cards for the first time - unopened envelopes have been gathering for a while. * I'm going to start with Wes Shepard, as I'm khow his was the first envelope received. I did manage to thank him right away for this card by either text or phone call - Wes and I communicate on a semi-regular basis in that fashion. What's important about this particular card is that it finishes (again) a set that is near and dear to my heart. First, the card in question is a 1970 Pete Rose. This is the second time this set has been finished - the first time was at the 2015 National. Ken and Steve and several others helped me track down the last cards I needed, and then somehow they disappeared. I assume they're around here somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can find them. Okay, so little by little I've tracked down most of the gremlins and have been helped along the way by a few of you. I mentioned earlier that this set is near and dear to me. Why is that? Well, it's not because I find the 1970 set particularly attractive, 'cause I don't. In fact, I think it's the ugliest set Topps ever made. I have long held that belief. The old-timers will fondly remember the days when we'd have a nightly chat on the old ICQ chat platform, and I mean nightly. There'd be a little swapping lots of story telling and laughing, and way too many .wav sounds played. You old guys remember Barry Clesh's eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.wav, right? So one night we got to talking about the ugliest sets of all. I let it be known that my choice was 1970 Topps. I'm sure I wasn't alone, but I must have been quite persuasive, 'cause a week or so later I got a big white box in the mail from David Kolenda containing about half of the 1970 set. I called him up to both thank him and lightly cuss him out. He had a good laugh about that - those who knew David will certainly remember his laugh. That started set grew little by little, and then we lost David to cancer. My set was renamed the David Kolenda Memorial Set, and I vowed that once it was finished, I'd be auctioning/selling it and donating whatever it sold for to cancer research. It is now officially complete (has been for a few months now), and I intend to keep that promise. More on that to come. At any rate, thanks are due to OBC in general, and as it happens with set killers, to Wes in particular. It's fitting that the last card came from Wes and that it was Cincinnati's own "Hit King". Thank you, Wes. * Matt Yudt, you're next. I had no idea what was in this envelope, and I'm blown away. It's Lefty. To Lefty's right is Fritz Ackley. Holy crap, Lefty's RC. Wow. Thank you, Matt. Thanks for your generosity, and I'm sorry it took so stinking long to acknowledge you. * Next up is David Luftig. This one was a winning bid from a Wauction back in mid November - it features Charlie Mitchell from the 1901 Odgen's Limited Tab set. Charlie was a boxer, and this card will be moving on to another collector outside our group. Thank you, David. My sincere apologies to you, too. * The honorable George Vrechek is up. George sent some great hits to my new-ish OPC Dodger wants: 2 from 1970 (UGH!! ), 3 from 1972, the checklist from 1973 (** for those scoring at home), plus Stan Williams from 1963 Post and Davey Lopes from 1977 Hostess. Zowie - thank you, George! I apologize for being so late with my thanks. * Geno Wagner sent, along with a couple of his customary APBA "calling cards", a hit to my team card subsets - 1972 Orioles. Thank you, Geno. Should we ever meet up again, the first rounds (yes, rounds) are on me. Let's plan a cab or Uber. * Rich Labs, you're up. Rich sent a SCP from the '55 Bowman set - a super sharp umpire card of Edwin Hurley. Seriously, this card is super nice. Great color, square corners (well, a bit rounded, but way more square than round!). Thank you, Rich. I'm sorry this took so long. * Nate Mack: so here's where I expose myself as a real jackass. Nate was my Secret Santa (more on that to come in my ramble). Long story short, things kinda started going a little sideways in my life in December, and I started to withdraw from a great many people. Nate, bless him, sent some very nice cards and even a follow up email to check in. I, for lack of any other way to put it, ignored him. I ignored damn near everyone in my life then, and that continues to an extent now. So Nate, thank you. Thank you for sending me 5 great hits to the '55 Bowman set (including Puddin' Head Jones), plus a hit (Vic Raschi) to the nicest set ever made (the '53 Bowman Color), and I'm pretty sure two hits to the '66 set (they were loose in my pile of envelopes, but were laying right on top of your envelope): a George Scott Rc and Bob Gibson. Wow. Thank you, Nate. * Bob Donaldson: Bob sent three hits to the '55 Bowman set - a coupla Dodgers in Russ Meyer and Bob Hughes, plus George Kell. Thank you, Bob. Thank you very much, indeed. * Bob Bannon: the TVs keep a comin' - two hits to the '55 Bowman, including Tom Poholsky. I know squadoosh about ol' Tom, but before I go look him up, I'm going to guess that he didn't stick around long. At some point a (presumably) youngster wrote MISS in big letters across his image. Okay, just finished looking him up. He actually stuck around for around eight years. He did something to earn the ire of some kid, though! Thank you, Bob - love the cards! And that catches me up. Again, I can't express how crappy I feel that I took so long to thank these guys. Whatever was going on in my life shouldn't have kept me from at least contacting you guys personally to tell you "thanks". ================= Date: 22 Feb 2018 02:39:20 +0000 To: Subject: Thanks JSG ! The original =E2=9CJoe Cool=E2=9D w/apologies to Snoopy and Charles Schultz. Thanks a lot Bob!!! Jim Craig sent me something in August and I don=E2=99t think I thanked him because I just found it. The #10 envelope contained a `50 Bowman FB (VanBuren), a `57 Topps BSKB (Piontek), and a `57 Topps Space (Exploring Jupiter). All three are out of this world =E2=93 Thanks Jim!!! Jim sends me a Christmas card with a couple `53 Bowman Football cards tucked inside (McChesney and LIONS Smith). I=E2=99m not worthy Jim, thanks somuch!!! Bob D=E2=99Angelo knows how much I enjoy my TIGERS =E2=93 so he stashes (13) of them in a 3 pocket and gets away with a single first class postage stamp. I am not permitted to elaborate on the items but rest assured each TIGER item sent back to SE Michigan is greatly treasured =E2=93 ThanksBob!!! Bob Donaldson connects with Hocktoberfest cards with (4) `74-75 OPC cards w/Sittler and (3) `78-79 Stickers w/Rangers, Sabres, and North Stars. I=E2=99m Slashing these from the want list =E2=93 Thanks Bob!!! Joel Freedman hits the Hocktoberfest List with (5) `78-79 OPC, a 79-80 OPC and a `80-81 Topps. Thanks so much for Hooking me up with the Hockey Joel!!! Mike Glasser contributes a pair of `51 Topps Ringside cards (Willard & Sullivan) which brings me to less than 30 to go for the set. I really appreciate the contributions Mike!!! Mike sends a second envelope this time w/(8) `50 Topps Hopalong Cassidy cards, a pair of `50 Bowman Wild West cards and a single from `50 Topps Bring =E2em Back Alive. Nice group of early `50=E2=99s non-sport =E2=93 Thanks again Mike!!! Ken Goetsch laments that he rarely has anything to send me but when he picks up a lot of `63 Stancraft Green FB playing cards he ships off (9) of the dupes in my direction. Now I call that making up for lost time =E2=93 Thanks so much Ken!!! Ed Hutchinson wrote me that he had a pair of `76 Buckman Disc=E2=99s (Hunter & Stargell) for my MSA disc quest. I have been chasing the various MSAdisc back variations now for at least a few years and I do not see too many hits as most of the common back types are completed or close. So it is always a pleasure to get a few to cross off the list =E2=93 Thanks Ed!!! Joe Issac hand delivered a stack of TIGER cards and YAZ cards for the hero binders. In the group were the `61 HR Leaders w/Colavito (and Mantle & Maris), `63 Whitey Herzog, `67 Bengal Belters (cash & Kaline), a `67 Cash (HI Number), and a `68 TIGER Team card (another impossible HI Number). The Yaz cards included `62 Topps, `64 Topps and a `66 Topps Leader card =E2=93 Like way TOO MUCH. Great to see you again and spend some time catching up with Richard Labs includes me in his trip around OBC with a pair of cards that look like `53 Bowman but there not and (4) cards that look like `60 Topps but again just to fool you. Details on another server =E2=93 but I still love =E2em =E2=93 Thank Richard. David Luftig allows me to take a SCP off the list from the T-225 Surbrug=E2=99s Prize Fighter series (Nelson) and a nice note about missing our first meet up at the National. Well there is always Cleveland David. Thanks somuch for the great hit to the collection!!! Rick Lyons prepared a DS lot for me that netted me a =BD dozen `63 Bazooka All-Time Greats Silver version card w/TIGERS Greenberg & Cochrane. Alongwith the offering Rick included (4) assorted Topps CFL cards from `59 - `63 =E2=93 how cool is that. Thanks Rick!!! Sean McGowan allows me to claim a waiver item =E2=93 a SCP from the `68 Milton Bradley Win a Card Game set (Bando). I am still trying to figure outwhat makes this card different from the regular Topps issues. I guess I=E2=99m on a new quest, so Thanks (I Think) Sean!!! John McLaughlin joined the above Joe Issac in a dinner meet up and John handed over 1974 McDonalds San Diego Padres Discs of Nate Colbert and Bobby Tolan. Very neat =E2=9Coddball=E2=9D items for the disc portion of my collection. Great to see you again John!!! Nate Mack slips me a very nice X-mas card with a SCP from the `53 Redman set with a Billy Pierce May variation card. I have always enjoyed the Redman sets and believe them to be among the nicest sets ever produced =E2=93 Thanks for yet another of these Nate!!! Peter Mead continues the Never Ending Trade but the USPS has me guessing what Peter might have sent. What arrived was a plastic bag with a mangled envelope and =BD a note that says =E2=9CI figured you needed a type car=E2=9D and that=E2=99s all there is =E2=93 so the keys to a vintage Austin Martin did not make it to SE Michigan. I=E2=99m still enjoying the thought!!! Thanks just the same Peter!!! Peter once again slips me a WAuction item from #14 that I claimed for a ridiculous price ($0 bid, $0 Buyer Premium, $0 Shipping, Total $0) =E2=93 atough `63 Salada FB coin (Bosley). Boy you got to love these =E2=9Coddball=E2=9D items showing up on the now infamous WAuction. Thanks Peter and of course Guru!!!! James Moleta has put a number of items on the DS server that I have interest in =E2=93 I picked up =E2=9Coddball issues=E2=9D including (4) American Tract Society Tracards (Richards, Moomaw, Johnson & Kindall), (16) `46 Remar Oakland Oaks that takes quite a bite out of that regional set. James also includes a pair of `80-81 Topps BSKB singles (Meriweather & Johnson) for that rarely hit quest on my list. Thanks James!!! Ken Morganti allows me to snag some DS items, a `57 Topps Baseball Checklist Blony variation and my first `53 Glendale Meats card (Pat Mullin). Then Ken sweetens the deal by including (9) `71 Kellogg=E2=99s variation cardsAND (2) Hostess panels w/one from `75 and the other `77. Thanks so much Ken!!! Bob Neill flips me not one but two `53 Mother=E2=99s Cookies card (Tappe& Desautels) from just out of the blue. I love these =E2=9Coddball issues=E2=9D and it=E2=99s great to get them when you least expect them =E2=93 Thanks Bob!! Bernie Pulk completed an eBay DS deal that nets me a `52 Parkie (Red Wing Sinclair), (4) pre-war Helmar Seals, a pair of `59 Fleer Indians, a pair of Good, Bad, & Ugly, a pair of Topps Soupy Sales and a Beatles Diary card. Thanks Grant Rainsley helps me celebrate Hocktober w/a trio of Canadian Sport cards including a `54-55 Parkhurst (Hildebrand), a `55-56 Parkhurst (Morrison),and a `59-60 Topps (Balfour). WOW =E2=93 (3) `50=E2=99s Hockey cardsfrom a fine Canadian gentleman =E2=93 Thanks Grant!!! Mike Rich and I drove down to Monroe to meet up with John and Joe for dinner last month and Mike handed over a TCMA `20=E2=99s League Leader (Ross Young), a `70 Milk Dud (Melton), a `75 Twinkee (Ryan) and a `34 World Wide Gum card of Earl Coombs to replace one I handed over to him at the National. Thanks as always Mike!!! Mike and got together recently for a local sports talk show personalities presentation at his temple. I enjoyed the talk and then we spent some time at his house where he handed me a trio of TCMA postcards =E2=93 a signature card (Medwick), a `54 Indians and `39 Yankees. Also included was a `79 TCMA `50=E2=99s card (Williams), a `70 Milk Dud (Jenkins), a `75 Town Talk FB (Griese), and a set of `76 Colonial Bread Superstar Soccer. The funny thing about this set is I thought I had a starter set and Mike simply completed it, only to find what I had was the Kilpatrick Bread set so Mike has another one to chase (I gave him some of these Kilpatrick=E2=99s a while back). Great to see you again my friend!!! Wes Shepard connects with a trio of `67 Topps Planet of the Apes, and a trio of `67 Donruss Monkees cards. Very cool items from my youth, I had both these and Beatles cards because there were no Rolling Stones cards that I recall. Doug Smith sent a real surprise SCP =E2=93 a `34-36 Batter-up of Zeke Bonura. Little by little some of these sets that years ago I thought were pointless to collect start to accumulate. Thanks Doug!!! Larry =E2=9CGuru=E2=9D Tipton puts a big smile on my face w/a =BD dozen `67 Topps Who am I cards w/Washington, Madison, Stevenson, Grant, Byrd, & Bell. Thanks for sending cards to a set I really like but rarely see any cards from. Larry then sends a second mailing with apologies for a scuffed up `48 Bowman card of Bob Feller and a nearly impossible `50 Topps Freedom=E2=99s War Tank die-cut card that is punched out. I=E2=99m very grateful Larry. Larry (I think) because the envelope had no message, card or return addressbut it had a Jacksonville post mark and was filled with the kind of stuff Larry usually sends. Inside was an Exhibit card of wrestler =E2=9CNatureBoy Rogers=E2=9D, a `50 Hopalong Cassidy, a `59 Wacky Plak, a `66 Bat Laffs and a `67 Soupy Sales. That sounds like Guru to me =E2=93 Thanks myvery generous friend!!! Larry then sends a third mailing just before Christmas time with annother nearly impossible `50 Topps Freedom=E2=99s War Tank die-cut card that is punched out. Are you kidding me =E2=93 three perfect Tipton=E2=99s from Mr. Tipton himself. WOW - Larry. Larry also includes me on the Kent Montgomery project and I get a pair of TIGERS w/`61 Topps Bill Bruton (PR2) and `79 Topps Jack Billingham (PR1). Guru also includes a few non-sport issues with a early `50=E2=99s Topps Bring =E2em back Alive and a `59 Fleer Indians card. Thanks again and again!!!! Chris Tripler sends a very nice X-mas card with a special surprise =E2=93 a `64 Topps Venezuelan (Sawatski) in beautiful Tipton condition just like all the other ones that I have. Thanks Trip. Mac Wubben wishes me a Happy New Year with a #1 card from the `34-36 Batter-up set with Wally Berger of the Braves. Very nice way to greet the New Year =E2=93 Thanks Mac!!! Mark Zentkovich blasts away at my disc collection with (2) Carousel Snack Bar (Hunter and Stargell), and (4) Burger Chef Discs (Blair, Forsch, Reitz and Okay, I will really try to never do this again. Ken M. recently wrote that =E2=9Cmost don't care if you send out anything at all, but rather just be thankful for what you get.=E2=9D In my recent meet up with Mike Rich I told him of my delinquency in getting out thanks and he politely stated =E2=9CI can=E2=99t give you a pass on that my friend =E2=93 just get it done=E2=9D. He quipped in his recent thanks to me that he mighthave to =E2=9Cwait till the National=E2=9D to get thanks from me =E2=93 nudging me gently to stop my procrastination and =E2=9Cget this done=E2=9D. I checked all my normal stashing places and hope that I got everyone I=E2=99ve missed =E2=93 after looking over the post I am quite embarrassed but I surely hope getting it (even this late) is better than not hearing from me at all. I really am thankful, you guys are simply the best!!! It is always nice to continue to get stuff in the mailbox and so to that end I will be doing just that in the coming days. BRIAN BETZA sent a nice assortment of cards, including a pair of 1954 Topps (including Bucco Gair Allie), as well as a half dozen from 1959 Topps football (half of which are close to mint). 1971 Topps FB.You are all tired of me harping on that set, but Bubba Smith arrived and Ilove it!
1972 Topps BB. Most discussion on this set involves the tough high numbers, but stars are also great to get...how about Don Sutton, a HOFer from the 500 series!
1973-74 Hockey. The flower, Guy Lafleur! Possibly the best skater of his era. I didn=E2=99t like the Habs back then, butThe Flower was a special player. I love this set too!
1975 Topps Mini. Goose Gossage when he was a young Pale Hose hurler. Another HOF hit!

The cards are two of my needs from the comic baseball postcards cataloged by Burdick as 1910 Roth & Langley PC798-10 (sepia). I have a majority of the "set" now. I made sure that these cards would qualify for the sports collectors recognition level by specifically including cards of young women playing baseball even if they didn't appear to have a clue as to what they were doing. This stuff was hilarious.in 1910. I interviewed Frank Keetz a few years back who wrote the book on comic baseball cards and postcards. George Vrechek ================= To: , Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2018 09:47:05 -0600 Subject: Thanks to Erik Greenwood - again From: "George Vrechek" My non-collector friend, who opened our mail while we were gone, tried to describe what was in the envelope from Erik Greenwood back in January. I can see why he had a problem. This large envelope was like an attic find of cards. The cards were all from sets I had barely seen. I may have a type card or two from some of the sets covered. Erik included cards which would help me reach my goal of 50,000 vintage sports cards with 12 Buckman discs from the 1970s, 12 cards from a TCMA set of the Salem Pirates, 3 Family Fun Center Padres, 6 1975 Dean's Padres, 17 cards from the Oklahoma City 89ers, a Sweet Caporal pin of Elberfeld (a first for me), 27 of the 31 cards in the 1973 Dean's Padres set including the stars, 2 Tigers team issued cards, 9 team issued Indians from several years in the 1950s, 11 photo cards of the Oakland A's from some unknown (to me) issuer, and 25 White Sox players who appeared in Tribune cut-outs in 1977 - a set I never knew about. I know I subscribed to the Tribune back then, but was likely too lazy to cut these out (perfectly) each I think this adds up to 119 hits from about 12 sets, which must be a record of some kind. MARK ZENTKOVICH sent thirty-nine hits to my secret 1974 Topps second set, plus four 1974 Traded for the same list. This set accompanied the T118 issue which were mostly arctic explorers. The same artist painted both sets in authentic, but depressing, arctic gloom. David was as persistent as the explorers, sending the card twice via USPS due to their initial inability to deliver. PATRICK PRICKETT sends me 6 1971 O-Pee-Chee baseballers. Patrick may have been lost in the membership poll email shuffle. I hope that he gets himself re-activated on the OBC site. Let me know, if there is anything I can do to plead his case. I used to run the annual polls and I know that the email doesn't always get through or noticed. I support the idea that you have to do something, if a member doesn't respond. However, I would hate to lose anyone, who really wants to remain in OBC. George Vrechek
