Started Monday at 3 am when I woke up to catch a red eye to Detroit. Got to work around 9:30 am in the south west part of Toledo OH area where I spent 3 1/2 days working 10 hr/day. A successful week from the work perspective, but the highlight was the Tuesdayevening gathering of a few FOOT members and myself, the one huge baseball fan in OBC - see subject line. Went to John McLaughlin's house and exchanged handshakes, talked with John and his wife Renee for a few minutes. Previously we were going to meet in Toledo but Mark Talbot and Mike Rich had a long drive and, with the inclement weather, we agreed to meet in Monroe MI at Pete's Garage. This was Mike's idea and we gave it a shot. Well, that was a bulls eye as we sat in a 54 or 55 Ford that reduced the noise and allowed us to hear each other. As John and I sat down, I pulled out the card that John handed me and nearly fell off the chair - a '53T Roy Campanella. You gotta be kidding me, really? It was perfect - tape marks on the front and back, a nice couple of creases, soft rounded and stained corners, you get the idea. Mark and Mike arrived and we greeted each other with the appropriate handshakes and got down to ordering dinner. Mark handed me a 55T high Sherm Lollar, a 56T of Early Wynn and the Scooter. Mike handed me 3 56T - Joe Adcock, Bob Porterfield and Hal Narragon. Dinner was surprisingly very good - I polished down a calzone for 2 as I had my snack reserve for lunch due to a busy work day. Not only the food, but the conversation and company of fellow OBCers was the best part of the night. We swapped stories for 3+ hours and laughed a lot. Said our goodbyesto Mark and Mike as I drove John back to his home and he invited me in to chat with him and Renee and to meet their 2 Siamese cats, Sherwood and Forest. These cats knew I am a cat lover and came right up to me for pets. Finally left John and Renee's house a little after 11 pm. A big thanks to John, Mark and Mike for meeting up on a work night and for the awesome cardboard and conversation. By the way Mark, I made it in the next day at 7 am (true to my word!). Good food, good company, good times. You would also seemy picture. When it comes to timely thanking I am the epitome of hopeless.Several times recently I have publicly announced my determination to send out Thanks in a timely manner. It is said better late than never so here are my Thanks for August and September. My first Thanks goes out to JOHN SCOTT GRAY. Now if anyone is applauding myweak attempt at redemption you need to know that I don't specifically remember what I'm Thanking him for. I think it was 4 or 5 cards from a 60's set. However since I already bindered the cards and didn't write the contents on the envelope I'm clueless and again Hopeless. Sorry JSG, please don't take this personal or that I lack gratitude. I am grateful for any and all cards that come my way, even if I can't remember them. Secondly I need to Thank RICK JOHNSON for 4 OPC Tigers. 2 from 67 (including a Lolich), along with a 71 and a 75. It's always great to get Tigers in the mail and OPC mucher! My next Thanks goes to JOE DENNING. According to the date stamp I'm gettinga bit more current here. Joe sends me seven for the 57 set. I always thought Rip was a great name for a baseball player. Repulski? Not so much. I appreciate how you and OBC have pounded this new set Joe. Lastly on this server I need to Thank GRANT RAINSLEY for 5 more 57's and yes Grant, the House of Maxwell welcomes beaters and the Dodgers Sluggers andfriends certainly lived up to the description. I think these were the mostrecently received however I'm not sure given that Canada refuses to put date stamps on envelopes. Ok, I'm up to date on the vintage, now to the UV site for my last late Thanks! From: Peter Iversen DOUG SMITH sends along three Amazing! cards - 2 for my Birth Year quest and one for the oddball Horizontal list... all Lovely! cards! First is a beautiful 53 Bowman Color of Joe Adcock...with his million dollar smile... and another of a player I have never read about until I gazed on the back of his 53B color - Alpha Brazle...! Another example of what a good looking 53 Bowman Color can be... He follows that up with a fine looking 1951 Bowman of Hall of Famer George Kell .... this one is a special addition to my All Horizontal Collection - love this card Doug and good write up on the back... THANKS so much for a handful of wonderful baseball cards...!! After Doug I get a package from JOE DENNING who sends me a 55 Bowman card that means more to me than anyone might imagine. You may have heard that I wrote and performed a play about Van Lingle Mungo and also have included Van prominently in my soon to be published novel - well Joe sends me an Al Lopez card - Mungo's battery mate and perhaps his closest friend. Al was the only person from MLB who came to Van's funeral in 1985 - he was also the only manager who broke through the Yankees monopoly on the AL Pennant from 1949 - 1964... with the 54 Indians and 59 White Sox.... Al Lopez! This is a great card Joe and one that I will always cherish... To answer Peter's question, the only card I have is the "dumpster" version. AKA Mike's travelling dupe box. If you look in the background of the photo, there is a dumpster from Zet's Restaurant in Toronto (Missisauga), where Carlos Alcazar's father took my photo after a Toronto show as we were going in to have dinner. MARK ZENTKOVICH takes aim at my 1964 Topps wantlist, delivering a handful of cards that seem fresh out of the pack. And what a pack - Wilhelm, Alston, Osteen, Brinkman, and Sievers. RANDY WELK has upgrades in mind, sending me a semi-hi from 1969 Topps and a trio of 1976 Topps. The 1969 card features Don Wert, 3rd baseman for the Tigers, in a classic pose for a hitter. Interestingly, his hands on his bat are a couple inches apart, like the guys used to do back in the Rogers Hornsby days. I wondered if he always batted that way or if it is just an anomaly, so I turned to Mr. Google. His 1966 card popped up, and he was holding the bat the same way. Lots of OBC generosity in my mailbox (along with a few ebay wins--including the set finisher to the 1960 Mayrose Football set). Thanks in no particular order: George Vrechek sends a stack of 52 late 1970s Sportcaster cards including the like of "the infield fly rule", Lasse Viren (of supposed blood doping fame), and Nadia Comaneci (of a different gymnastics and perfect scores). Adding these to the other 25 I have buried away someway--Georges pushes the vintage count above 49400. I can see a bit of light at the end of the Lionel Carter status tunnel. Mike Rich has been making the rounds (as have a host of OBCers)--he contributes two 1961 Union Oil Rainiers (including Gordy Coleman), a 1962 stat back of Mr. Kaline and a '63 statback of Ken McBride. Dave Lutfig shares some of his Famous Explore bounty with a three pack highlighted by Henry Stanley--what a biography: Confederate Army, US Navy, correspondent, searched and found Livingston, knighted. I love this set Greg Henthorn spreads some OPC job with a four pack from 1965 (with the 1960s version of Aaron Judge--Frank Howard was 6'7" and 260 pounds), and a 1973 HOFer of Mr. Spitball. Mac Wubben outdoes himself (when doesn't he?)--with a 1972 OPC of card #309--only Roberto Clemente. Bob Donaldson sends a great DS of T205 Pirate John Flynn with a apple green sovereign back. Mark Zentkovich kills off a short modern oddball set with a HOFer and adds a 1975-76 hoopster HOFer of Elvin Hayes (the guy could flat out play). And two envelopes from another frequent sender--John Stamper--the first contained two 1949 Remar Bread Oakland Oaks and a couple of those mid-1970 basketball tall boys and the second held seven more of the 76-77 set--you have to love the Afros. Add to that a couple Salada football shortprints a complete Jack in the box Angels set, and some 1964 Auravision stars-- Some welcome home. Thanks one-and-all and all of OBC! Even funnier in person after a few beers, was laughing so hard I cried! Thanks, instant mood booster reliving that one! Sent from AOL Mobile Mail On Tuesday, September 26, 2017 Geno Wagner illini_grad_90 That's actually a pretty funny story, so I here it goes: Airplanes have all these limitations that we have to memorize. For instance, I fly a Boeing 737 right now. The turbulence speed is 280 Knots (a knot is basically an mph), or .76 Mach. The flaps speed for flaps 1, 2, or 5 is 250 knots. Flaps 10 is either 210, or 205, dependingon the model you're in. On, and on...lots of numbers. So one day I was flying with a buddy in the Dornier 328 one day. Again, a bunch of silly numbers, but the Dornier had a windshield wiper limit of 170 Knots. Yes, airplanes have windshield wipers, believe it or not. You don't use them in the air too much, but on the ground quite a bit. However, in heavy rain, they help in final to see the runway. Which is good. So anyway, my buddy is flying, descending through arain shaft, into Denver. We're doing 200 knots, and he decides to turn on the wipers. I have no idea why, since we're so high, and who cares if you can see at 10,000 feet. Anyway, I remind him that thewiper speed is 170 knots. He looks at me and says "Seriously? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. That's a bullshit number." So he hits the wiper switches. They do one sweep outboard, and promptly depart the aircraft, one off each side. I have never laughed so hard in my life! The look on his face was priceless. So I just said, "you're probably right, 170 knots is a bullshit number, but I bet it's something less than 200." And you thought those guys in the pointy end were serious. Nope...we're just having fun.
