You handed me a 1954 Topps Rizzuto right off the bat. We tag-teamed finding stuff for each other as well as we could, both at the local shop and at the Nat. Oh, and I remember a couple 76 discs, four red series Star Wars, a Satchel art card, even 1980 Sports Illustrated with Keith Hernandez on the cover that you bought. Like goons we stayed up til 4am digging through Kurt Tourdot's stuff he let us take home. And yeah, I claimed the Diamond Stars StL George Blaeholder from the swap. I'm certainly forgetting a lot more stuff you sentmy way. I also got to sleep in Tim & Colleen's camper for four nights, andthat was one of the main parts of making the National affordable for me. Various acquisitions at the swap: The "Chandy table" scored me several 4-pocket and 8-pocket sheets, some penny sleeves, some Baseball Digests, a picture of Mickey Mantle and a Beckettcover with Ted Williams. The auction netted me a Cardinals pen, mini-cap, Mike Ramsey auto, a Packers auto to share... Someone at the swap had a 1952 Topps Cardinal Stanky. Someone's dupes box yielded a couple 1955 Bowman Cardinals with punch holes. So... thanks to all whose boxes or tables I raided. A second thanks to all those who were gracious about me falling short on some handshakes, and having a few handshakes which were rather weak. Your tireless generosity, grace, patience and understanding is incalculable. To all: for the wantlist help, for the teamwork, for your camaraderie... for letting me be part of this awesome group... Got some bucks left over for the upcoming East Coast National here in White Plains. The handshakes were many, and without a doubt I will overlook one or two, or misspell a name, or misattribute a giver with the wrong gift - forgive an old man whose memory's best days are far in the rear-view mirror. Ironically, my college nickname was "Old Man", after "The Old Man in Scene 37" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("Who would cross the bridge of death must answer me these questions three...") Without any more ado, here we go: Doug DeJong: 7 1967 Topps & sked. I took a seat at a food court table early Friday to cross them off my list, pumped my fist in the air, and a woman saw me and said "I'm familiar with that feeling." Oh yeah. Doug also let me have a good-sized BOX of skeds at the swap session. Taylor Schock: 93 Donruss MVP Puckett, and cards from 67T, 60T, 61T. Larry "Guru" Tipton: Holy crap holy crap holy crap 1934-35 Diamond Stars Al Nick Pelletier: 3 60T's and some skeds. Spike Glidden: Autographed OBC Bat Slice (very cool!) 58T Bob Lemon, 2 55T's, 49B Baker. Mike Mroz: 4 67T's. TJ Valacak: 76 Hostess, 67T & 61T commons & skeds. Mac Wubben: 1934 Diamond Stars Earl Grace! Wes Shepard: 3 67T tough semi-high numbers. Mike Mackie: 63T, 67T, and 76 Hostess hits. Bob Bannon: 63T commons, and 1962 Post Mantle yeah I said it, yeah Bob went there, 1962 POST MANTLE! Kent Goto: one beautiful 1954 Topps Duke Snider!!! Larry Gersbach: 63T Cunningham. Mike Rumsley-Wells: 58T Cerv (an all-time favorite card of mine, as Cerv appears to be hitting himself in the back of the head with his bat) and 59T Cicotte, delivered to me at the White Sox / Indians game at Comiskey Park. Aaron Shirley - 76 Hostess Ryan / Millan / Nettles, also delivered at the White Sox game! Ron Perry - 2 62Ts including Covington, another all-time favorite card. John Dahms - 3 55T's including Skinner. Sam Taylor - 4 commons from 1976 Hostess. Steve Rittenberg - 1953 Bowman TV&Radio Stars Marlon Perkins (tough odd numbered card!), and several 1933 Goudeys!!! Gary Mandell - 3 67T's in blazing near mint condition. Sharp corners. Ow! ;) Tom Housley - 3 62T mid-series tough commons. Ed Hutchinson - Couple of 58T & 59T hits. Sal Domino - Roy Campanella exhibit, and his own custom made cards. Mike Rich - A dozen 59T, 60T, 58T cards in beautiful OBC condition. Geno "FlyBoy" Wagner - 2 59T's and a nice-looking Jet exhibit card. Richard Dingman - 2 67T commons. Mark Talbot - "Mick Pic" (nice picture of Mantle), R314 McNair & Little Poison Waner, FIVE 1939 Play Ball cards, 2 1952 Berk Ross, 77H North, a Tigers sked, and gave me my pick of skeds at the swap session. Joe Adriance - Solid hits to 59T, 60T, 62T, & 67T. Joe - I found your handshake envelope I was supposed to give you at the swap session! It got stuck in my convention show bag, and that was back at the hotel room during the swap. It'll be on its way soon. Whew. Jeez, guys. From: familytoad@comcast.net while the mail piled up , it was mostly junk like bills, mortgage offers and catalogs selling fruits and nuts.

But....

You guys know the look of innocent OBC incomings by now...
They are handwritten.
They are unassuming envelopes.
Treasure inside.
Sent by generous fellowcollector nuts.

Today is 71 Topps FB day again. It's about once a month where this nut gets more 71 FB.
Joel Freedman says I need more. He is not wrong. He says I will need them someday. I need them NOW!
I have 14 full sets , 20 or more pending. Bubba Smith hits set 16. I Love it, I amnuts about these cards. I also got an eBay box with 140 more cards including some that hit in the first 20 sets.
Those of you doing 9 x sets really should consider more, it's what nuts do...

Chris Tripler is quite amazing. Seems we were just welcoming him aboard a short time ago into our nutty clan. Now he's on practically every frequent sender list that we have. This time, Trip jumps straight to "cuckoo " by hitting the main Topps baseball list . Not many chances left to do that for me as I dwindled to 21 remaining. This was the "Superstars " card #490 from 1968 !!!!
A major hitindeed!
Like a nut, I decided to do a second set of the tough 1972 baseball set . Maury Wills was in this same envelope to help out!

Amazing !
Thanks so much Chris and Joel!

They have a made an old Cub/Sox fan feel very nostalgic. Cubs may win it all again this year but there was a magic to those 7th and 8th place teams of the 50s and early 60s. Don't know which is better this weekend--receiving those cards, or helping my son and his family (wife, five year old twins and 2 year old) move out of our house into their new house. They've been living with us for 2 months, as the closing of their old and new house didn't line up. As always, much appreciated, and it's amazing that despite the several thousand schedules I have here, I always need any vintage skeds, any current-year skeds, and there are plenty of holes in the rest of the year for me to fill in. I missed Jason Christopherson at the National, and I remember having handshake envelopes for him and Joe Adriance that I'll need to find and send out soon. Anyway, Jason sends a very sharp pair of needed 1977 Hostess (Bell & Burleson) that appear to be in dead mint condition. Wow! Dave Luciano returns to OBC and sends me six really nice Topps 1963's, all of which were hits on my progressively tougher want list. These include a young and very Italian-looking Joe Torre, always a favorite player of mine with the Braves and Cardinals. I didn't even mind when Torre managed the hated Yankees (who are hated even more this morning after the Boston Stupid Heads bullpen imploded in the bottom of the eighth last night), and was happy to see Joe Girardi take over for him, because the Red Sox could continue to use the same song when the Yankees called for a relief pitcher: "Hey Joe", by Jimi Hendrix. From: Andy Huntoon This is the type of story that I tell people when the ask what OBC is. I explain how there are several groups of "traders" on the internet, but only one like OBC. Sure, we trade, but it's stories like this that capture the essence of this group, Not only did someone (or some folks) think to kill Tom's set with a huge hit like this, but they secretly placed it with his dupes box so he would find it much later, after everyone was gone and he couldn't ask around to find out who did it. You see, the OBC brother(s) didn't need recognition, they didn't do it for show, so everyone else would know what they did. They did it to makes Tom's day. They did it because that's what we do. I couldn't make it to the National in Chicago a couple years back and I got a Stan Hack puffy full of awesome hits that killed on set and had a lot of really sweet hits to others. I still have no idea who was involved in it, but Stan Hack made my day for sure I love this group! Even though this time it didn't happen to me, I feel like part of it because I've been accepted into this group. This group of excellent men. You all rule!!! OBC Rules!!! So, even though Tom got these hits, I want to thank you all too. Just for being OBC. I had that opportunity last night when Brother Rick Lyons was in town with his lovely wife Roni.
I drove directly from work and my wife drove from our house to meet them at their hotel.
The restaurant where they were staying is coincidentally one of my wife's favorite places to eat in Vancouver (WA).
(Ok, mine too)
We had a very pleasant visit, a very good dinner and they kept me out until the unearthly hourof 830PM. Way past my first nap time.
Rick naturally was prepared with a OBC handshake, I naturally was not.

I acquired a pair of 1971 Topps FB and a funny looking 1962 card that is fuzzy and not a green tint. Oh no! It's a  Venezuelan card!
Rick mentioned that it was only one so I was not obligated to start the set! Whew!
The card is Phillie favoriteTony Taylor. Very cool.

Thank you Rick and Roni for a great evening, with plans for future visits!

Brian

He mentioned that he was close to finishing his 64 Philadelphia football set, one which I had made a lot of progress on over that weekend, but still a dozen away. I asked him what he needed, and it was a Steelers team card, ironically one that I had picked up that day. If you know Nick, you know what a generous guy he is, and has been to me, so I had no trouble just handing that card over to him so he could cross another set off of the wantlist. He asked me what I still needed, and as usual, it was a list consisting of stars, and now a Steelers team card. Today, I get the mail and find an envelope from Nick among a bunch of work related incoming. Always the first envelope to get opened, out drops a Near Mint Jim Brown from the 64 set, pink Cadillac and all! Not only my favorite FB player of all time and my childhood hero during my hometown fanhood of the Browns, but still (IMHO) the greatest RB of all time. You outdid yourself this time Nick. Even in real life, trading the entire Steelers team for Jim Brown would be a lopsided trade in favor of JB. Thanks so much, and I am looking forward to you jumping back into our active OBC brotherhood! Thanks Nick! I feel like I am never home probably because - well - I=E2=99m not. Lately I have been out of town a lot. I just got back from 4 days digging around in the Family History Library in SLC, Utah. Amazing place if you re into that sort of thing which I am! I found the baptismal record of my grandfather from Madeira (tiny Island - Portuguese colony near Africa) from the 1870s which had the names of his parents, both sets of grand parents and his padrinho and madrinho (godparents). This led me to more baptismal records which set me on the path to find his parents baptismal records which mentionedall four of his grandparents as well as his godparents - all in Portuguesewhich I neither speak nor read. Anyway, I figured it out and was elated when I returned home where I had an envelope waiting for me. Bil Ashton (probably not Portuguese so probably not related to me on my dad=E2=99s side - maybe mom=E2=99s - Irish?) sent me an envelope with six - not one, not two=E2=A6you get the idea - =E2=9954 Topps cards allprobably better than the best =E2=9954 Topps card in my possession. Thecards are in English, not Portuguese, which makes them a lot easier to read than church documents from the 1800=E2=99s handwritten in Portuguese. But=E2=A6the cards have info too. For example, Forrest Jacobs (one of the cards Bill sent) was nicknamed, =E2=9CSpook=E2=9D. Not sure how he got that name, but it also mentions that he was one of the smallest playersin the Majors. Also, Elmer Valo - another card sent to me by Bill, states that Elmer expects to be an ump when he retires from playing. I can=E2=99t say as I haveever heard a player state that he wanted to be an ump. I also noticed thatall six players were contemporaries of my parents. I know it makes sense, but it=E2=99s weird for me to see these cards that seem so old and realize that my parents were their age and even older than Tom Poholsky, Don Johnson, and Jack Harshman - three of the other cards in the envelope. So cousin Bill (we are all related if you dig far enough) thanks for the great cards! I can=E2=99t remember ever receiving so many =E254s at one Jim =E2=9CEl Fuego=E2=9D Silva #25 ================= To: Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2017 00:24:45 -0400 Subject: Milton Bradley strikes! Many thanks! And, what adds to the delight is that this is the first mail that has gotten through to us in 2 weeks. My son and family moved in with us for 9 weeks while they were between houses. Not realizing what he was doing, he had his mail forwarded here (no problem), but then filled out the form to have it forwarded to his new house, without specifying names to be forwarded. Then, when we realized what he had done, he filled out the correct forms. The USPS, in it's infinite speed, has seen fit to hold our mail in "mail jail" now for two weeks, with the not overly reassuring reassurance that they will handle it speedily. Thanks Bill! In a followup performance, Ed Hutchinson sends cards again, this time a threesome from '66. Thanks Ed, I'm beginning to take a liking to this set. As reported earlier by Mike Rich we had a little OBC get-together. Joe Isaac, who has been in town the last few days for work came by the house and picked me up and off we went for a very enjoyable evening with Mark Talbot, Mike Rich, Joe and I at a fun place in Monroe Michigan. Not only did Joe provide transportation to and from, but he also provided avery impressive handshake: (5) 1970 Topps including Reggie Jackson, (21) 1971 Topps including Nolan Ryan and several other stars, a '72 and a 1973 Topps ALL-TIME BATTING LEADER, Ty Cobb which leases only four cards to go on that set. Thanks Joe, I didn't realize the extent of your generosity until I got a chance to look through the stack. Once we gathered up at the restaurant the cardboard started being passed about with unbridled enthusiasm. Mark handed me a '53 Bowman Gil Hodges and a '55 Ernie Banks. Thanks Mark for a couple well loved cards. Mike handed me a stack which included (1) '62, (1) '63, (2) '66, (2) '71 and (3) '72 Topps. Thanks Mike, I was a little disappointed that you could only eat 16 wings. Good friends, good food and good cardboard. It don't get better then that. Plenty more to go! ================= To: "obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com" Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2017 17:39:19 -0500 Subject: Income! From: Yaz Two envelopes to report. Both came Tuesday. Bill Ashton sent me a pair of '57 Topps cards, Andre Rogers and Indian ace, Bob Lemon. Thank you very much Bill! That same day, Ed Hutchinson sent me a '68 Topps Colavito. After going through my '68 set, thought to be complete, I found 2 for sure Milton Bradley cards and a pair I wasn't sure of, one of those being the Colavito. Ed was offering up the Colavito as a waiver and I asked for it so I could compare. There is a distinct difference in the one I had and the one I got from Ed so I now have 3 Milton Bradley cards for sure and one maybe. I managed to pluck a Dick Hall card off ebay for a buck and now the Colavito is here so if anyone has a #121 Jimmie Hall, (MB for sure), or a #143 Pete Cimino, (not sure about this guy), laying around, I've got spaces in my binder.
