Got a great package of 3 phillies and 2 A's, including my should-be HOMer Curt Simmons. Curt played way before my time, but he is from my hometown (Whitehall PA). Last year my class reunion was in Curt Simmons park, which was renamed to honor him a few years ago. James included two kellogs cards to take two sets down to 1 card (one of them was a Schmidt too). On top of it he wrapped it in paper from 12 years ago for a card show in MA that has Carlton / Schmidt and Rose. What a great philly package. Thanks James! Joel has discovered that no matter how many skeds I have, I always need any skeds from any team for the current year - including the "Swamp Bats". More on that a little later in the Ramblings server. I also heard from my long-time OBC buddy Doug Smith, who sent two hits to my Topps 1959 want list: Hitters Foes (apparently Koufax wasn't good enough yet to break the rotation of Drysdale, Labine, and Podres), and a team card that is getting a lot of attention lately. It's a beautiful, lightly creased but unmarked team checklist, the Philadelphia Phillies team card. This has been on my want list for a very long time, and only recently I found out why - it's a single print, and nice copies of it are getting pretty expensive. So the cards that Doug sent filled some holes I didn't expect to fill for quite some time. Sam hits my mini list hard with about two dozen cards, about half of which were team cards. Those were going to be my handshake at the National and would've been plenty, but Sam let me look through his dupes after my dentist appointment. I pulled half a dozen 1977 Twinkies on my list, plus a couple SP's from other sets. We looked through many of his sets while we were looking through each other's dupes. I saw he had three of the four 1975 Hostess on my list. (3 are SP's and a variation). Well, two of those had a little writing on the back, so Sam pulled them to cut my list in half! WOW!! THANKS SAM!!   Also got a couple cards out of SEAN McGOWAN's pile of dupes boxes, which I'm bringing to Chicago with me. This time it is William O'Neil that gets added to the HAVE list on my want page. As I put this away and look at the 100 or so specimens from this set that I have acquired I think back to the two separate occasions that I traded away all the T-206's that I had for other items that were on my want list - I'm pretty sure I would be so much closer to flipping this into a WANT list had I not made those earlier trades. Then again the Topps run would not be anywhere near done if I didn't make some trade moves to get some HOF action on those sets with those trades. Nonetheless, it is no time to lament as another piece of cardboard over 100 years old is nestled into its new binder home - THANKS CHUCK!!! I apologize in advance if I screw this up. Won't be the first or last time, especially during a National. Anyway, in no particular order than how I piled them up on the desk: LARRY TIPTON hands over a Fleer Baseball Firsts - or more appropriately, a Fleer Baseball LASTS, as it finishes the set! THANKS GURU!! He may have also added in a pair of 1971 scratchoffs, because I met up with him and the next person in my roll call at the same time and they both went in the same team bag for storage purposes at the time, Possible credit to TAYLOR SCHOCK for the aforementioned scratchoffs. Taylor stuffs a semirigid to the gills with cards, A 1968 Topps Milton Bradley Perry on top (wow!), a few 1959's (only they feature modern players - double wow!) plus three minis including one of the Mantle MVP's (triple wow!) THANKS TAYLOR!! NICK PELLETIER via Mike Rich knocks off over half the remaining 1977-78 hockey on my list including a Bernie Parent. I did see Nick at the show, but he had to leave before I got a chance to thank him in person. Prayers being sent that your Mom has a full and fast recovery from her surgery today. THANKS NICK!! SAL DOMINO gives me one of the few remaining 1971 Kellogg's variations (until I discover more), a 1977 cloth sticker, two very cool 25th OBC anniversary cards and a super rare (Likely one of a kind) 1958 Topps Mejias variation missing his first name (hint: it's similar to the Herrera I gave him last year that was also missing his FIRST name). THANKS SAL!! JOE ADRIANCE loads up a semirigid with 9 more minis for that set. I might have to ding a few corners on these to match the rest of my set though. THANKS JOE!! Same envelope had MAC WUBBEN'S handshake (I let them both into the show at the same time). Mac apologizes for the 'poor' handshake. I beg to differ - two minis: a MVP and Carew! plus a 1977 OPC Palmer! That's at least a 'VG' handshake, more likely 'excellent'. :-) THANKS MAC!! BOB BANNON offers a 1948 Bowman, a wax pack that is a year older than OBC and two blue looking transfer thingies that I can't quite place. THANKS MIKE RICH delivers four of the tough 1971 Kellogg's football and a 1977 Twinkie of Ron Leflore. Must've been hard to part with a Tiger. THANKS KENT GOTO gave me three 1967 Topps high numbers! These weren't actually produced in 1967, but are still nice hits to my list. THANKS KENT!! Finally got to meet TJ VALACAK for the first time, which was a pleasure in itself. TJ adds to that with a trio of minis and two 1977 OPC Expos - plus a PILE of vintage looking UV cards to help those sets along. THANKS TJ!! That's all for now. Hope I got everyone. It was great seeing so many guys, after so many years, and shooting the crap with them at the show and at dinner. It's probably been about20 years since I've been to the National, so it was great to get back and see some cool stuff. One guy had 300 signed 1952 Topps cards for $85,000...yes, autographed...are you kidding me? I saw a couple Honus cards, the Babe Ruth RC, and even prison letters from Aaron Hernandez, which was a bit over the top for my tastes. I also managed a few finds for my Sovereign quest. But the best, as always is the friends...and I have a few to thank: Talbot: Mark hunted me down and handed me quite the eclectic mix of treasures, from airplane photos, so Blackhawks cards. But the best oneis a University of Illinois shot glass that Mark decided we should try, tomake sure it works. So he pulled a finger or two of whiskey from hisbag, along with his Tigers glass, and we toasted to our OBC brethren! Shirley: Aaron added to my wardrobe with an OBC t-shirt, and we talked a bit about flying. I think everytime I went by Kurt Tordout's table, he was hunkered in there with Mike R-W and Richard Dingman. Thanksfor the shirt, Aaron!! Rich: Mike decided I needed a new stack of APBA cards, which is funny, since I just got some the other day to put in some of my handshakes. For the new guys, I used to send these things randomly thrown into RAOKsall the time. Eventually I ran out, so everybody sent them all back to me at once...haha!! Taylor: Sam add a Ron Santo Fleer card to my ex-HOMer collection! Autographed, I might add...sweet! I think I have the only HOMer that became an HOFer. Great talking to you, Sam!! Wubben: Mac shocked me, as he is prone to do, with a T206 Sovereign card...but not any card...a Chief Bender!! How cool is that?!? Idon't get too many of these, and when I do, they aren't Hall of Famers. But the last two times I've seen Mac, they have been! Domino: Finally, finally...I have met Sal!! It's been 25 years coming, and I was not disappointed! Not only did Sal include a nice note in his handshake, but the card was awesome! I had spotted a T205 Ruelbach Cubbie earlier in the day and was going to go back and talk the guy down a bit. But no need, as Sal just hands me one! Wow...thanks, Adriance: Joe comes through with a really cool SGC-graded Wheaties panel of Billy Herman! It looks really cool in teh black background of the SGC tomb, so it's going on my wall in my baseball card room if I can figure out how to do it. Joe also knows my proclivity towards liquid libations and had a few of his local beverages to share! Goto: The first OBCer I ever met, and it's been a long time in between! Kent not only brought back memories of Belleville, IL, but he handed me a T205 of Sam Leever with the covetted Sovereign back! We also had a few good laughs at dinner, remembering some of the old timers. I need to make sure I get back next year, it was way too long between seeing a good friend! Tipton: Guru tracked me down and handed me another gem...a T206 Johnny Kling, the old Cubs catcher!! Not only that, but it is sharp as a knife, and looks awesome with that red background. What a nice card...thanks, again, my friend!! Bannon: It was nice to meet a few new faces, one of them being Bob Bannon, who it turns out is from right by my wife's hometown! Bob handed me a sweet Zeenut card, which I have always thought were really cool. It's one of those sets that's rather daunting to collect, since there are so many of them and seemingly endless variations of them. Could Bobbe starting me on another list....hmmm. Rittenberg: Steve, thanks for the dinner last night...you're awesome and one of the more generous people I know!! Well, I'm off to the airport...I hope you guys have a great time today!! I'm going to start working the kitchen pass for Cleveland... Take Care,Geno ================= Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2017 12:22:14 -0400 To: OBC Thanks Subject: Thanks to..... At some point I=E2=99ll be a regular attendee, just kind of tough again this year. Anyway, kind of slipped on keeping up with the OBC mail this week. This is probably in reverse order of receiving, because it is a nice pile on my desk: MIKE MROZ sends another flat of football. This time its about 15 from 1979including Eagles Bill Bergey and Rams Jack Youngblood. Also a guy named Walter White, who I never heard of (in FB) except that my wife is FINALLY watching Breaking Bad, so I just saw an episode last night and that name stuck out =8A CAP ANSON sends a return fire =E2=93 I think our collections our mirror opposites =E2=93 mine pretty much starts around 1950 where his mostly ends, but yet he found a pair of 61 Scoops for me anyway! MARK TALBOT answered my plea for a few barely vintage/almost vintage Kellogs cards and KILLS the 1980 Kellogs with the Ryan and nearly kills the year after that with another Ryan (need one more). He also started me on another TCMA set =E2=93 this one the 1975 =E21927 NY Yankees=E2=99 with 3 hits to get me going. ROB BESSETTE sends a rare (for me) 1962 Jello Joe Cunningham and one from another barely hit set, a 1954 Bowman B&W And last, but certainly not least, because it came before the rest above is RICHARD LABS =E2=93 sends a pair of =E2=9972 Kellogs and a beautiful =E2=9979 Hostess hit that was clearly NOT cut out by a child! Thanks guys and have a great weekend or National if you are lucky enough tobe OBC Forever! From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi all, I went ot bed too late last nigh (early this morning) to send out a thank you note. Boy am I paying for that today! This one is going to be long. Again, I hope I don't screw this up. Apologies in advance if I do. So, in no particular order: AARON SHIRLEY digs up three OPC's on my list including a 77 Palmer and a 1980 Lynn. THANKS AARON!! Met DOUG DeJONG for the first time (and finally found out that I've been mispronouncing his name in my head for 20+ years (it sounds closer to 'the young' than my literal pronunciation). Doug pops in a sched with a half dozen 1975 minis including Ron Santo. THANKS DOUG!! LARRY GERSBACH brings a bunch of 1969 Topps stamps my way including Billy Williams. THANKS GERSH!! MIKE MROZ (another name I've been mispronouncing in my head all this time - it sounds more like 'morose' than The Wizard of Oz like I thought) helps out the 1975 mini set with at least a dozen and closer to two dozen cards. THANKS MIKE!! WAYNE DELIA really piles on with over 30 more 1975 minis. As if that wasn't good enough, Wayne tucks in a T205 Polar Bear back! NICE! THANKS WAYNE!! Next up is MARK TALBOT, who unloaded on me with a ton of 1977 OPC's, a bunch more minis and garnished it with some Twinkies cards. SWEET! THANKS TOM HOUSLEY adds another half dozen cards to my 1975 Topps minis. It's amazing that with all these mini hits how little duplication I'm getting. THANKS TOM!! GEORGE VRECHEK doesn't fool around with this handshake. How about 4 from the 1977 OPC set - including Yount, Fingers and Rice?! THANKS GEORGE!! GARY MANDELL gets my vote with a dozen and a half more 1975 minis, with very little duplication. THANKS GARY!! Canadian officials are looking for one RON PERRY, who is alleged to have snuck into Canada, smuggled out a load of 1977 OPC stars and put them in an envelope with my name on it. I will say I have no knowledge of the incident, but really appreciate the effort nonetheless. THANKS RON!! Last, but not least, someone who I haven't seen in well over a decade ago: GENO WAGNER hands me a cool exhibit cards featuring a rocket blasting off, then adds in an Obak card. THANKS GENO!! We really should get together more than every fifteen years of so. Thanks to everyone for thinking of me. I definitely got more cards crossed off my list so far through handshakes than what I've purchased at the show! From: MARK TALBOT MIME-Version: 1.0 Hello All, Day 2 and 3 for me here in Chicago has been fun filled - lots to be thanksful Day 2 at the National had me spending just a few hours at the Convention Center where I said hello to Mike Mroz, Mike Mackie, T.J. Valacak, before I left with George Vrechek, Bob Bannon and Tom Housley to go downtown to Navy Pier to see the Rolling Stones exhibit. Before I left Mike Mroz demanded that I take his =E2=9Chandshake=E2=9D which was a `52 Bowman Football card (Kastan) =E2=93 Thanks Mike. Upon my return from the trip downtown I immediately loaded on the shuttle back to the hotel where Mike Rich,Sam Taylor and I prepared quickly to embark on a trip to Beer Town =E2=93 Milwaukee to see the Cubbies take on the Brew Crew. I could turn this into a trip ramble but to say the least it was a pleasant trip to a stadium I had never been to with 2 fine OBC friend =E2=93 Who could ask for more??? It was a great day for me!!! Day 3 was fun because I just meandered about saying Hi to my OBC friends and picking up some treasures. We all of course were anticipating the swap where many of us find a highlight of the weekend. I enjoy the social aspect that the evening get together the most and see it as the opportunity toreally share the OBC spirit and philosophy. Throughout the day and eveningthere are plenty of thanks to share: Doug DeJong hits a BIG time hit with the `56 Topps Gil Hodges White Back variation =E2=93 I have a hard time finding these and this is excellent. This is my feeble attempt to thank everyone for what transpired yesterday. If I were more organized, I'd come up with a system to thank everyone for handshakes and cards pulled out of dupes boxes at the swap. That might also take away from my enjoyment of the event, so there is a bit of a dilemma.  Anyway, I can thank a couple people from memory:  MIKE MACKIE rooted out the envelope he thought he had for me a couple days earlier. It had three minis for me, which despite the flurry of activity over the last week, were still hits. THANKS MIKE!!  At the show, MIKE RUMLEY-WELLS told me he had this "friend" with a tough wantlist he needed advice about. He wanted to start this friend on a new set and asked what I think he should do. Well, I told him this friend kif he was a good friend) would probably tell him he should spend his money on himself, as the card shows in Nicaragua are very underwhelming. I was completely shocked to learn that this friend was me. Mike did take my advice, but managed to dig up a 1975 mini for me anyway. THANKS MIKE!!  At the swap, it's very difficult to know who to thank. I really should make it a point to write my name on my dupes box and would suggest others do the same (or stick a post-it on the box), so others can tell whose it is. Keeping track of what you pulled out is another story.  I know I got some hits from WAYNE DELIA, AARON SHIRLEY, SPIKE GLIDDEN, STEVE RITTENBERG, SEAN McGOWAN and others. Couldn't tell you for certain with specific details though. (I'm almost certain I've left someone off that list above too.) Thanks to everyone for showing up and the swap and at various points during the week. I drove 18 hours (over the course of three days) to get here and you all make it worth every minute. THANK YOU!! Getting cardboard added to my collection is a distant second, but thank you for that too.  I'll hit the show again today for a bit, but I'm pretty satisfied with the beating my wantlists took (and I didn't buy a whole lot. It was mostly due to the handshakes I got all week.) Then it'll be time to start getting ready for Cleveland 2018. It'll be tough to top this, but it will be fun to try. You check the list to see who is showing up...you paw around your dupes box a bit...sometimes you dig deep into the collection in hopes of finding something.I have been on the receiving end of many great handshakes over the years...from a 33 Goudey Ruth from Mike Rich to a T3 Ty Cobb from Steve Rittenberg...and hundreds of other great gifts and gestures. The latest on a long line of treasures to come my way came from oldie-but-goodie OBC'er Joel Glickman. I believe it was the first time we had met in person (though my memory isn't what it was)...and he hands over a gorgeous E101 Ty Cobb. How's that for a handshake? ( I believe he asked that, but I was in shock, so hard to recall exactly). Still working on getting my jaw up off the floor...and starting to plot some revenge. From: Doug DeJong I had a whirlwind two day trip to my first true National experience. As everyone says, because it is true, the very best part is meeting all the different OBCers for the first time and getting to spend some more time with those you have already know. According to my best recollection, before Friday I had met a dozen. I tripled that in two days! Today was a long day on the road and I am whipped, but want to get some thank you's out for the terrific handshakes I received before I crash. I will send a longer report out tomorrow. Steve Rittenberg - Graciously gave me 9 58T cards including the Frank Robinson AS card, and a 64 Topps. In addition, Steve graciously let me look through his stacks of extra T51 Murads dupes and I managed to find 20 hits!! (Still need to hit him back for those!) Steve many thanks and it was great meeting you -- maybe next time I am in Hunstville visiting my friend we can connect! Taylor Schock hit me with a great variety of cards including a 75 Planet of the Apes, a 73 Team Checklist card, ten 61 Topps FB, 1 71 Topps FB, 3 73 FB, three 66 Topps BB, 1 58 Topps a trio of 64 Topps hi numbers, and a 63 card of boyhood hero Fran the Man. He - along with Spike and Guru - also put up with me as a roommate Thanks Taylor. Guru gave me an incredible welcome with one of the remaining 3 57 Topps needs - a beautiful Clemente cad! Other than a small pencil mark, it is almost perfect!! Later he also got me my first 2 Exhibit cards including a Spahn and a pair of sharp 1956 football team cards. Thanks Guru! Geno Wagner left before I arrived but passed on 4 razor sharp 72 Topps high numbers!!! Plus a pair of APBA footballers! Mike Mackie gave me 2 sharp 58 Topps and a 66 Topps! George Vrechek handed my a 71 Len Dawson card, a 55 Bowman, a pair of 62 Post and a pair of 63 Post hits! George also let me pick up a couple T218 boxers I needed at the swap night. Bob Bannon handed me 2 sharp 63 Topps, a 61 Topps and a 61 Leaf card. TJ Valacak gave me a great mixed envelope with a 63 Topps high number, a 55 BVowman Footballer, a Batman blue bat "Cowl" card and a hit to the red bat Batman series! Mark Talbot handed me 7 63 Post hits including Torre and McCovey! Mark also managed the swap session auction where I scored a 48 Bowman Spahn Rooke card!! You can tell it is Spahn by flipping it over where there is no paper loss and reading that it is him. Definitely worthy of the Guru Grading services and needs to stay in OBC forever. Mike Mroz handed me 4-66 Topps hits and a 63 hit! Joe Adriance hit me with two 60 Fleer ATGs including McGraw and Lefty Gomez. Ron Perry passed on a 61 Nu Card hit! Aaron Shirley handed me an even six pack of 66 Topps cards. JD handed me a 62 Topps hit and a 63 Topps! Richard Dingman handed me a pair of Davy Crocketts (one orange back and one green back) plus for 62 Topps. Sal Domino gave me a dozen 58 Topps plus a personal Turn Back the Clock card of him in 2017 and 25 years ago, in both the full size, and mini size and side by side versions! Kent Goto gave me a very nice 53 Topps card! Nick P mixed it up a bit with 7 hits to the 77 hockey set --- awesome! Spike Glidden handed me 4 52 Topps hits. He also let me pull a 70 OPC league leader card that had two Twins (Carew and Oliva) on it from some of his cards. Larry Gersback handed me a ultra nice 63 Topps hit! Wes Shepard handed me a three pack of 66 Topps hits. Wayne Delia handed me two very nice 52 Topps, a 53 Topps and a pair of 48 Bowmans including the Rigney card! Gary Mandell punished my 71 Football list with 35 hits! Sam Taylor added 5 more 71 FB hits and a 63 Fleer baseball hit - my only one from that set for the entire weekend despite my keeping an eye out for Tom Housley handed me a pair of 723 Topps football, and three 63 Topps hi number baseball cards!! Mike Rich handed me a pair of 66's and 9 73 FB hits. Finally, an unmarked envelope that I believe came from Ken Morganti contained a 55 Bowman! Again, the cards are great but the mostly symbolize the generous and great comradary of this great group of folks. I probably missed some and if so they will likely show up tomorrow when I finish putting stuff away. Thanks to everyone for a great and memorable time! As this is not for cards, and not from an OBCer I hope the powers that be don't have an issue with this posting and on this server. My thanks for National cards and other goodies will come shortly.....in thenext few days (I hope). Over the last year I have been hoarding Parker Brothers football cards. I learned that it is cheaper to just buy the whole game (on eBay) IF you get the correct Parker Brothers cards. I was thinking of bringing a complete game to TJ ( he loves to play board games with his kids) when he messaged me before the National. He told me to save room in my return luggage for the game. A good eBay price for the complete game (wITH THE CORRECT CARDS) is $25-$30 (including shipping) and TJ said this was a $5 garage sale find! My wantlist was incorrect and looked like I was trying to complete one set. When I add this complete game, it will mean I have SEVEN complete games! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
