Had to stop a bit and send out some thanks - Dan Angland who sent Mike Rich some N.Y. area skeds and Mike handed me a couple of them today (Yanks & Rangers). Way Cool!!! Bob D'Angelo finds an autographed TIGER item that will require further detail elsewhere. Thanks Bob (and hang in there)!!! Larry Gersbach was a part of the NCAA pool and was holding the name of 2 of the teams my selections were victorious over (Nova over Mt. St. Mary and WVU over Bucknell) so from Larry I receive my first NCAA pool winnings. Larry was very kind for 1st round victories to send me a `41 Playball (Bill Atwood), a `55 RedMan variation (Al Rosen - June date), a `57 Kahn's (Hal Jeffcoat) and a `64 Kahn's (Bill Virdon). It sure is fun to receive all these items from the "oddball" set that I enjoy so much. Thanks for the "pay-off" Gersh!!! Richard Labs also sent Mike Rich some skeds, so today I receive a Battle Creek Bombers sked courtesy of Rich - Thanks Buddy. The a fore mentioned Mike Rich and I got together today for lunch and to go to the WNIT championship game at Callahan Hall on the campus of the University of Detroit. The lady wolverines of the University of Michigan were victorious over the yellow jackets of Georgia Tech by 10 points 89 - 79 in THREE OVERTIMES. It was a great day as usual spending time with Mike and 5 other friends and of course Mike was very generous with some cardboard offerings. He handed over a `66 Fleer Drysdale Game card, a `77 Wiffle ball MSA disc (George Foster), a `73-74 Fleer Basketball Cloth Patch (Property of Buffalo), and a pair of Fleer BB cards (details elsewhere). I very glad Mike contacted me for the get-together, I always enjoy myself and the locals were victorious - Thanks Mike. I have been successful in getting to the post, all my NCAA loses have been paid off (except the eventual tourney winner) and while I was there I've gotten a few more items in the mail. It does feel good to get some stuff out in the mail and I hope to continue the trend. BE WELL!!! The Tekulve autograph is on what appears to be a 1980 Topps card, but is a Topps Archives card. Bob must have known that Tekulve is one of my all time favorite Pirates. As kids in the late 1970s and early 1980s, we would imitate his sidearm delivery when playing whiffle ball. The guy was "lights out" in the 1979 World Series and the run leading up to it. I remember one important, close game (and seen magazine shows confirming) where Pirates manager Chuck Tanner wanted to play the percentages, bringing in lefty Grant Jackson (a baseball card hall of famer!) to face a lefty batter. But he wanted to leave Tekulve in the game, so he tried to hide Tekulve in left field for one batter, then bring him back in to pitch. The one batter hit a fly to left, and Tekulve snagged it. Tekulve has become a well respected and insightful analyst for Root Sports, which shows the Pirates games in the Pittsburgh area. Trudenbach spelled incorrectly. I understand that a thanks is due George Vrechek who originally sent this to David and it is one of very few non Tolstoi back cards that I need for the Master Set - a HUGE HIT!!! Rich Niessen slips me (150) cards that need further description elsewhere but certainly deserve acknowledgement to the group as a whole. Thanks Rich!!! Mike Rich and I and another friend got together a few days ago for lunch and to watch the first TIGER game of the year and of course Mike was very generous with some cardboard offerings. He handed over a `66 Fleer Drysdale Game card, a `77 Wiffle ball MSA disc (Cedeno), a `73-74 Fleer Basketball Cloth Patch (Property of Boston), and a pair of Fleer BB cards (details elsewhere). I very glad Mike contacted me for the get-together, I always enjoy myself and the locals were victorious - Thanks Mike. I have been successful in getting to the post, all my NCAA loses have been paid off including the tourney winner and while I was there I've gotten a few more items in the mail. From: Geno Wagner Fellas -- I just finished reading about Hutch getting that 59 Gibson from Mike, and Iwas shaking my head, when my daughter walks in with our mail. Amongst all the junk is a big ol' package from Richard Labs. I rip it open in about two seconds to find some NCAA winnings...and how cool it is! The first thing I pulled out was an old book by Robert Zuppke, called Football Techniques and Tactics, by Robert Zuppke!! Zuppke was the football coach of my alma mater, the University of Illinois, from 1913 to 1941,and the field is named for him. He invented all sorts of things in football, including the huddle, so we all have time to pee. He coachedRed Grange and a bunch of other guys, winning seven Big 10 titles. The book is awesome, from 1924, with all sorts of plays and pics in leather helmets. There's a couple of pictures of Guru and George Vrechek in here, I think. This book is awesome...it's going on my U of I shelf!! But wait... that's not all. A sweet T205, Sovereign back, of George Ferguson...in awesome shape!! Ferguson was just wrapping up a short career with the NY Giants and Boston Rustlers when this card came out. I guess he was probably about the same age as Zuppke on this card. It's a great upgrade to the one I had...so cool. Add in a Donruss Cubs booklet of cards and a Stan Musial puzzle, and a signed picture of ex-Cubbie Frank Castillo, and it's quite a nice surprise! I expected these and was delighted with the "extras" that Patrick includes, they were (7) German Actor cards, a `51 Bowman FB (Chandnois), a `52 Bowman FB small (Johnson), (2) `52 Bowman FB big (Toth & McColl), (2) `13 Type of Nation cards (Japan & Serbia), a `11 Cowboy Series (Touching Leather), and the one I'm most pumped about a T-218 upgrade (Murphy). This is the second T-218 I've gotten in less than a week, prior to that it's been many months since someone sent something for my T-218 Master Set. Well, what we call our biggest show on Long Island was not too bad. I have some favorite dealers that I know and try to make a purchase whenever I see them. Mets past and present on display signing autographs. Of course I went with the free-bee and got a pair of cards signed by Mackey Sasser. He was the subject of a real good 30 for 30, check it out if you haven't. Our shows have become pretty uneventful for me, as I pretty much have gone through their inventory for my lists. I did pick up a few shopping for others, which is always pretty cool. What I do find is that I can generally get a better deal on some stuff via COMC or Sportslots. Best part of the show is catching up with Dan Angland. We cross paths during these shows, and it's always great when you can meet up with an OBCer. Dan handed me some VERY cool stuff, including a baseball and a carry bag and festivities guide from the Mets All-Star fan fest, some team post cards of the Mets and a HOOPS magazine that featured some classic Knicks. Dan did pick up a set killer for his 1971 Topps, Jim Palmer. I'll have to look for someone else to send the one I had found LOL. I think the first time we met was at one of these shows, where I slid him into the autograph line next to me. Thanks loads Dan, we need to get you to the National! First, from north of the border, Grant sends me two great cards, including a 1957 Don Newcombe. Grant "apologizes" for not getting a hat trick and sending three--a cruel reminder that my Flyers are, once again, watching the playoffs from home. (Just kidding Grant--not about the Flyers, but about it being a cruel reminder). Always glad to add any cards to those sets. And Andy Cook sends a gorgeous looking 1956 White back-I don't know why I decided to do the gray back/white back variations, especially with the Ted Williams card, but I did, and the help is much appreciated. ================= Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2017 15:13:53 +0000 (UTC) To: OBC Thanks Subject: Jim Silva sends cards From: Thomas Elliott Jim Silva hit my mailbox with five '61 Topps baseball, including Gary Bell, as I continue to make progress on that set (need 140 cards). Mine are 1) Get up early, 2) Start spring cleaning, 3) Find important stuff lost for weeks, 4) Write embarrassed notes of thanks for the missing stuff I found. This year's lottery winner is Shawn Smart, who sent me - on February 21st!!! - a nice group of mid-1960's cards: Topps 1963 Bubba Morton and the Washington Senators team card, and Topps 1967 Dick Green and the AL Strikeout Leaders. Shawn had sent me a follow-up note which really threw me for a loop, as I remember opening the envelope, looking at the cards, and putting them in my Official Pile of Important Stuff to write a proper thank-you note, but for the life of me I couldn't find them at all. To make matters worse, my cosmic punishment was that the letter immediately hiding Shawn's envelope and cards was a credit card bill I was evidently supposed to pay, causing my credit score to drop about five or seven points. I should do these spring cleanings either more often or start earlier in the year. In any case, all were needed and all were appreciated. With my sincere appreciation, and sincere apologies, I will take aim at Shawn's "Top 10" list today. Obviously there are the three brothers - Felipe, Matty, and Jesus - but then you also have the nephews, Mel Rojas and Moises Alou, and a cousin,Jose Sosa. According to the paragraph narrative on the back, "Country" was coming off a great season - he hit .336 with 96 RBIs, just a few years after returning to the game after three years of World War II military service. Impressive on several levels! CHUCK SALEK hits my 1955 Topps set with four cards, including Joe Black - although I am certain it isn't the current Pirates announcer (former Uecker sidekick in Milwaukee). This is the one who was NL Rookie of the Year in 1952 and won that season's first game of the World Series. MARK ZENTKOVICH sends me back to football season, with gridiron cards from 1973, 1974, and a pair from 1959. He includes a baseball trivia card - I am certain I had the same set of baseball trivia cards when they were initially released (as a kid, I loved baseball trivia and wasn't bad); this one appears to have been targeted for me, as the last question asks, "Who hit the winning home run in the 1960 World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates"? Of course, that one is easy for any baseball fan, particularly a Pirates fan. But I had to Google the answer to one of the questions - "What Hall of Fame pitcher won three games for Cleveland against Brooklyn in the 1920 World Series?".I knew it was too early for Bob Feller, but I had no idea. The answer was interesting (Stan Coveleski), and he epitomized "pitch to JOEL FREEDMAN sent an envelope with a three-card holder with green cardboard inside, which I should describe elsewhere. JOHN McLAUGHLIN found a crisp 1962 Walt Alston to ride along with a trio of 1950 Bowmans. RICK LYONS sent me a pair of 1958s and 8 hits to the red and blue checklists of the 1973 Topps and 1974 Topps baseball sets. The 1958 Willie Kirkland card references that the previous season he was in the military - a common theme I notice on these older cards. Wow, that's quite a greeting back to town. Nick responded by turning his head slightly toward Stan and asking: "65 Mantle?". Stan shuffled through a stack of cards and pulled a nice VG+ with a $125 price. It was exactly what I was looking for and I offered $100. Stan countered with $110. Nick said since he didn't have a "hand shake" he'd throw in the $10 so the 1965 TOPPS SET IS DONE! Drove in Friday evening and met up with Ed Hutchinson and Jerry Barnes for a couple beers. The show itself was good and I fell into my usual pattern of looking for nothing in particular and finding a lot of cards across a variety of sets. Picked up three 1929 Kashin HOFers (Pennock, Frisch, and Faber) from Kurt Tourdot, a couple 1933 Goudeys, and few other assorted prewars. This includes a 1939 Play Ball high number knocking that list to single digits (9 remain). Knocked my 1961 Fleer set in half from 6 to 3, and cut the 1971-72 Topps hockey set from 14 to 8. MIKE RICH: A six pack of Kelloggs gems RON PERRY: A pair of 70-71 Tall Boy upgrades JOHN McLAUGHLIN: 14 hits to my 74 Football set TOM HOUSLEY: A big wad of Topps Heritage hits SAM TAYLOR: In addition to hosting Saturday evening's gala, Sam hit me with a 1980 Hawaii Islanders team set, a 2014 Minor League All Star program, and some 1974 Football I didn't jot down whose dupes box I raided but pretty sure I grabbed some from KEN MORGANTI and JERRY BARNES as well several others. Apologies if I missed any thank yous here. As expected, the highlight of the weekend was simply the opportunity to meet up with the guys from OBC, many of whom I had met previously and several I met in person for the first time. In 1957, Score was hit in the face with a line drive that broke some bones in his face. The batter was Gil McDougald, who rushed straight to the pitcher's mound to help Score instead of running to first base. When that many good friends meet you can be sure that cardboard will be flying. So a plethora of thanks to: Ed Hutchinson handed me a stack of (19) assorted LIONS cards and (3) packages of thin plastic sleeves for Tall Boy cards. It was great to catch up with you Ed!!! John McLaughlin who slipped me the 2017 version of "The Muddy Times", the official program of the Toledo Mudhens. John also passed me a Mudhens sked as well as a Toledo Walleye sked (a Red Wing minor league affiliate). Then John included a `64-65 Topps Hockey Tall Boy of Doug Robinson to knock one off the list. Great to see you and Renee at the show John. Ken Morganti allowed me to pick a pair of Redman date variations from his dupe box (`52 Slaughter & `55 Grissom w/tab). It really was good to spend some time with the "Industry Expert", I always enjoy our get-together s - Thanks Ken!!! Nick Pelteier went shopping for me and came up with a couple upgrades for my collection with a `54 Topps Eddie Mathews, some `62 Salada coins and a `67 Topps FB Leslie Duncan. I don't pick up a lot of these upgrades myself so it was nice to knock them off the list. Thanks Nick!!! Ron Perry connects with a SCP from the `63 Exhibit Stat back set with none other but Brooks Robinson. That's a huge hit to a dwindling list and it is really appreciated. Thanks Ron!!! Mike Rich did the driving to Strongsville and for that I'm very grateful, he also passed over another `66 Fleer Drysdale puzzle card, a `77 Wiffle ball disc (Luzinski), and a couple Fleer BSKB cards (Thompson & Humphries). I had a great time Mike and thanks for the cardboard. Sam Taylor played gracious host for a large contingency of OBC traders, dealers, and friends that included food, drinks, and fellowship. Of course he had to make sure I took some cardboard off his hands so he handed over a `79 Hawaii Islanders set, a National Caramel (Adams), a`12 Zee-Nut (Hitt), a `30 Zee-Nut (Warren), a pair of `47 Remar Bread (Foster & Duezabou), and a stack of (12) `65-66 Coke Hockey Red Wings . He also insisted that we help ourselves to some supplies so I grabbed a few binders and 9 count pages to put in them. What a great time at Sam's place - Thanks a ton!!!! Jimi Thayer played duel role of trader and dealer for the weekend and though I pawed through his offerings I could not find anything but a single `71 Kellogg's Stargell No Date variation that he promptly allowed me to put in my "handshake" pile. Nice to spend some time w/you Jimi and thanks for the SCP!!! Finally, in the mail from Bob Reed comes a NCAA payoff (I only had 2 wins) that brought the tourney winnings to a close w/a `63 Tulsa Oilers single (Felix DeLeon), (4) OPC Hockey cards, and (19) shiny items I'll describe elsewhere. Thanks Bob for running the pool year after year. I got home to a list of "honey-do" items that were my payment for the day away with the boys and I'm still making my way through it but as you can see it was well worth the time. The Strongsville show is by far one of the closest things to the National in attendance and FUN!!! Thanks to all those who made the trip enjoyable for me including Jerry, Tom, Mike M, and Wes, whose company I thoroughly enjoyed - it's great hanging out with all who were in attendance. More cards in Boulder? Why thanks, Tom! From: James Silva Tom Elliott hits me with a pair of cards. First a 1950 Bowman of Jim Hearn of the Cardinals. Hearn won more than 100 games and actually got some MVP votes the year he won 11 games with 5 shutouts. Not sure what is affixed to the front but I am going to hope that is mud! The other card is a pristine Doug DeCinces from =E2=9979 Topps. Four sharp corners? What is this? Two great cards - thanks, Tom! I didn't want anyone to feel the need to pull any cards for me, since I wasn't going to be bringing any handshakes with me. Of course that didn't stop a few of you from going through your dupes at the last minute when I made my surprise show report Friday night. Unfortunately, I was also mostly unprepared to receive any cards from you guys and that will show it the following thanks. I tried to keep track of who gave me what, but that is a major fail, sorry. I know that MIKE RICH handed me a 1969 Topps stamp album of the Phillies that was loaded with a couple dozen loose stamps. This is a good shot in the arm to my accumulation of these. THANKS MIKE!! Next is a 1971 Topps scratchoff from (*I think*) ED HUTCHINSON. I bought a bunch of these at the show, but as luck would have it, Mack Jones was not one of them. THANKS ED!! I have an envelope that I wrote MIKE MACKIE's name on. It reminded me of my Italian 'Heritage' (see what I did there?), but unfortunately it can't be detailed any further on this server. THANKS MIKE!! I'm certain MARK TALBOT gave me more cards, because my surprise announcement kept him up into the early morning doing so. This was completely unnecessary for another reason - he had just sent me a great flat that I got just prior to leaving for the show. I also had doubled the size of his Kellogg's want list, so he certainly didn't owe me anything besides a swift kick in the posterior. Unfortunately, my bookkeeping skills and memory leave me completely clueless as to what Mark handed me, but THANKS MARK!! At Sam's house, I picked through a couple dupes boxes and pulled a few cards here and there from a few boxes here and there. Unfortunately, that's about as precise as my record keeping will allow me to be - I didn't keep any records. So thanks to all who attended the after party at Sam's, particularly WES, JERRY, NICK, TOM and JIMI!! JOE DENNING was a late arrival at Sam's, but managed to pull a few cards from his dupes box in the 3 or four hours that we spent chatting, I know I got to cross off a few 1975 minis from my list and probably more. THANKS At the show, (besides the OBC'ers already mentioned above) I ran into RON PERRY and JOHN McLAUGHLIN. They may or may not have also handed me cards. In fact, I have this large block of vintage looking cards with an actual vintage card inserted in the middle of them all (a 1977-78 hockey team card). Nonetheless, it was great catching up with you whether you handed me anything or not. THANKS!! Did I forget anyone? I'm sorry if I did. Oh yeah, there is one more guy I need to thank, although thanks are akin to spitting on a forest fire in this case. SAM TAYLOR may not have knocked any cards off my list, but has the most thanks coming to him. I spent a couple days at his house. Besides the swap, I was there Sunday and Monday nights as well. I may have helped him discover variations and other cards 'missing' from his collection in that time. He made it up to me on Monday, when I discovered a few teeth were now missing from my mouth. He then moved some of his patients around and had an assistant come in early, so he could sit me through a five hour torture session - he came up with a game plan that will have me with a new and improved mouth when I come back out to visit on my way to Chicago in July. (Note to self: discover cards missing from Sam's sets AFTER he is done with any dental work). Sam also treated me to lunch on Monday and cooked breakfast up for me on Tuesday! I will have to 'work' long and hard to pay the 'bill' for his work, but who else will accept cards for dental work? THANKS SAM!! Ken M - I hope I got everyone who made last weekend very special and fun for me. I apologize if I accidentally left you out. Even if I had not found all those grey backs, it would've still been a very memorable weekend. Thanks to all! ================= Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2017 01:20:00 -0400 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: o/~ Feeling HOT HOT HOT.... From: ChicoD1@aol.com or o/~ Just like a Pill(ion)... The other Unflat has 12 55 Bowmans! Damn near puts me at goal by himself. Highlights are future Met Hobie Landrith (1st drafted Met who Stengel explained that you have to have a catcher or you will have a lot of passed balls), our own Frank Thomas and the #1 card in the set Hoyt Wilhelm! Wow, thanks Jim... (BTW one of those calendar pages you included was my birthday Oct 8th. Was that done on purpose?) Ken Pillion hits one of my totally favorite sets, the 54 Topps. 2 real nice hits of Haynes and Sarni. Both are 3rd series hits and bring me down to needing 78! Thanks loads Ken! From: Wayne Delia So I'm in my office/baseball card room, when my wife knocks on the door and hands me an envelope. This looks really promising, as it's a business-sized letter with the standard OBC third-page vinyl sheet inside. No name on the return address label; no note inside. I open it up and take a look through the cards and was completely blown away. Wife had to check up on me to see what was happening. Nine cards from the Topps 1960 set in what can only be described as lovely (to me) condition. Me: "Let me know if you've heard of any of these players. Ed Bouchee..." Kelly: (rolls her eyes, has to put up with this for only a minute or two) Me: "Walt Moryn, Lindy McDaniel..." Kelly: "Nope. Is this gonna take long?" Me: "Duke Snider..." Kelly: "Now that one I've heard of." Me: "Yankees Team, Dodgers Team..." Kelly: "Of course, yes." Me: "Whitey Ford..." Kelly: "Chairman Of The Board." (Everyone in her family is a deep Yankees fan, and her brother was almost named Mickey Mantle Baitinger.) Me: "Harmon Killebrew..." Kelly: "Wooooo." Me: "Ernie Banks." Kelly: "I'll leave you alone with your cards and will check on you in an hour or so." Forensic investigation of the anonymous envelope to determine the identity of this particular Stan Hack (mainly by reading the address on the label) leads me to the conclusion that Stan Hack is either Ed Schott, or else is Ed Schott's roommate at the same address. This was amazing! A huge boost to my Topps 1960 set. These aren't just minor stars, no way. I am now a lot closer to finishing that set. Thanks so much, Ed!!!! ================= Date: 29 Apr 2017 22:20:17 +0000 To: Subject: Belated Thanks From: mike.galbreath@gmail.com ================= Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2017 23:09:56 +0000 (UTC) To: OBC Thanks Subject: 59 help From: EEK from DON RICE who sends 8 including one from the nose bleed section.
