================= Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2017 16:55:59 -0700 To: Thanks Subject: An Amazing Envelope! From: Peter Iversen Hi all out there in OBC land! Just received a totally WONDERFUL group of cards and wanted to say THANK YOU to: MIKE RICH - who sends me one card that hits Two sets - a Horizontal Exhibit card of Hank (Heeney) Majeski - hits the Horizontal List and MUNGO song list! Thank you Mike! Then I find dig from the envelope a 1953 Johnston Cookie Birth Year card of Brave pitcher Lew Burdette - really love this card Mike! ...but best of all is an item picturing Van Lingle Mungo - an item from 1985 - hopefully I am not breaking protocol to mention it here but I can't help myself... This is a stamped envelope that was given out at a trade / baseball card show called Big Apple IV in New York City - it has a beautiful image of Mungo - portrait and pitching - and is stamped with a 1984 commemorative Vietnam Vets (Vietnam Veterans Memorial) stamp - It also has a short Bio on Mungo in the lower right hand corner - perhaps it was created for the player to sign for individuals who paid for a signature at thie Big Apple IV event - but the coolest and most sobering thing about this envelope is - right where Van might have signed this item is a rubber stamp that reads: "*VAN LINGO MUNGO PASSED AWAY JUST PRIOR TO THIS EVENT*" (note the misspelling of In my novel DIAMOND STARS (that I am hoping will be out in the spring of '18) my idea was (I believe this is fiction) that Van comes to the 1984 All Star Game in San Francisco mostly to go to a Baseball Card event at the Cow Palace after the game... so to see he was actually scheduled to go to a NY event for old ball players the following February makes me smile...the fact that he died on February 12th and the envelope is postmarked February 12 1985...is kind of bittersweet... So - Mike - I can't imagine how you could have sent anything that was more appropriate and timely - going to love this VLM envelope until a rubber stamp with my name on it hits some envelope - somewhere else... Thank you so much!!! marcpeter / Peter ================= To: "obc" Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2017 07:05:34 -0500 Subject: Sunday Thanks From: "Ken & Linda" Go out to: Chris Tripler who surprises me with a 59' Mays' Catch card hidden in between a bunch of my very first OPC Milwaukee brewers cards. I=E2=99m sure most of you read a similarly titled email from fellow member Doug Dejong a month or so ago, he rambled on about how I hit some of hislist pretty hard and =E2=9Cunexpectedly=E2=9D and while I appreciatethe thanks from you Doug, you failed to inform this awesome group of the whole Its been so long ago now and my life has been so crazy that I don=E2=99tremember every single date but ill try my best to keep things in order: In mid-late July I got my first house under contract with a closing date ofAugust 25th, the lease I had at my apartment ended July 31st and finding short term rentals in the Asheville area is near impossible, and when you dofind them, they want and arm and a leg per week. So, luckily I have a friend that was willing to let me live in her apartment until I closed on my house. Long story short things didn=E2=99t pan out, some things came up and I was asked to move out within the following 48hrs or so=E2=A6As I prepared to move back to my hometown of Franklin and crash on my mom's couch for the next month, maybe more, my awesome OBC mentor Doug sent me a text just to check in, see how I was doing, how the collecting was going, and see if I was going to the local show the next weekend. I briefly told him aboutmy situation and that collecting had kind of come to a stop recently and Iprobably wouldn=E2=99t make it to the card show. WITHOUT ANY HESITATIONDoug offered me to come stay in his spare bedroom so my daily commute wouldn=E2=99t be so long. (about 20 minutes to my work from Doug=E2=99s house as opposed to an hour and a half from Franklin!) Not only did Doug andhis wife welcome me, a near stranger, into their home for about 3 weeks, they allowed me to bring my 6 month old, rambunctious, wild, crazy, food seeking and destroying, kind of dumb dog to come too, which was a reoccurring problem at nearly every rental opportunity. Doug and his wife were more than generous throughout my stay, I was fed a home cooked meal every night, they walked my dog for me on occasion, Doug gave me at least 3 nice binders to start putting my closer to completed sets in, we order card supplies likebinder pages and card savers together, he loaned me this awesome book called =E2=9CThe Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards=E2=9D, I didn=E2=99t even know these things existed so if you don=E2=99t have one,GET ONE, because they are awesome! I now own my own copy of the book, which Doug ordered for me. We talked about cards nearly every night and he always had something cool to show me in his collection room, which I still don=E2=99t think i got to see everything. All in all it was a great 3 weeksI spent with awesome people and I=E2=99m pretty sure my dog made best friends with his dog in the meantime, I only hope they enjoyed my company asmuch as I enjoyed theirs, and hopefully Blue and I weren=E2=99t too much of a burden! So heres the biggest, most sincere thanks I could possibly give to my OBC mentor Doug Dejong, and his wife: Thanks for the bed to sleep in at night, the home cooked meals, the home made jams and jellies, the binders and pages for my cards, the vintage catalog, allowing Blue to stay (and eat everything in sight), all the card talks we had, the casual conversations, and the grown up advise you gave, not only for collecting, but for life in general. Thanks for the awesome stories from you childhood, the dog walks almost every evening, and introducing me to your friends, thanks for the Jeopardy games after supper (Doug always won), and everything you taught me along the way, which was more than just about cards, believe me! You and Mary went above and beyond for me in a time of need, and I will always be appreciative of that. You know who to call if you need anything at all and I will try my best to make it happen for you two! Oh, and last but not least, thank you Douglas for giving me the first T-206of my collection!!! My 42 year old self told me I should collect more of these soon! It has been the best house warming gift I have received yet! From: Andy Huntoon Hello OBC, I have three semi late thanks to post today. I'm about a week late on these so I do apologize for my tardiness. My old OBC Buddy JAKE ELWELL touches base with me by sending over 12 great hits including 10 1967 Topps and 2 almost Hi number 1972 Topps hits. Thank you so much Jake!!! These are awesome and I have been meaning to reach out to you recently so it was extra nice to hear from you first. JOHN STAMPER must have thought I was joking when he read on my website that I wasn't going after the 1977 Topps Cloth Stickers Puzzle because he went ahead and sent over 7 hits to the set. So I'm now working on the rest of this little set if anyone has any sitting around collecting dust. Thank you very much John!!! I kept looking at my note on my website and telling myself that I need to start this part of the set soon so I really appreciate you starting me on them. And last but not lease, JAY TYSVER and I are working out a trade that will net me 9 of the few remaining 1954 Topps commons that I need and he went ahead and sent them over already. I'm totally excited to get any hits to my 1954 Topps since I'm getting so close now. Still four big names to go but three of them are doable so I'm getting close. Thank you so much Jay!!!! I think this also means he is an accountant. In there were a 1952 Topps Al Widmar. This is the nicest condition card of my 1952 set. When I collected in my youth - I was very much into vintage cards - I don't think I even ever held a 1952 Topps. It's a very cool card, with Widmar going into his very 1950s style pitching windup. Also in the package were a pair of 1954 Bowmans - Tom Umphlett and Jim Dyck. There's also a 1957 Topps Rip Coleman. Trip throws in a 1972 high number, Ray Newman. And for my daughter, Trip sends three hits to her 1965 Topps Embossed set - Bob Allison, Bobby Richardson, and Orlando Cepeda. To top it off, in OBC style, another envelope accompanied the first one. In this envelope he includes a waiver claim or two, but throws in some more football cards for my fledgling 1960s football sets. It includes a 1963 Topps Nick Pietrosante, a 1964 Topps Tom Nomina, a pair of 1968 Topps (Pat Richther and Jim Warren), and a 1973 Paul Laaveg. Thanks Trip - very glad you are member of OBC! The players union had an agreement with Topps, but Topps had no deal with the league so the Topps cards have individual players in uniform, but with no logos. I hope we can collaborate on a nice memorial for Rich.

The sadness was softened by the incoming mail from Greg Henthorn.
Three hall of fame cards...1971 Topps football Bubba Smith and Willie Lanier and a 72 Topps baseball Tom Seaver in action! Wow I love these cards!

Thank you so much Greg...the cardboard was healing. Knowing that Rich loved to see cards flying across the country in OBC , I know he'd be happy too.

I managed to send out a half dozen envelopes a little while back because I was lucky enough to win one of Guru's Wauctions. It contained three cards, the theme was Clemente and I only needed one of them. I mentioned the fact I would need to find a home for the other two by looking at the wantlists but quickly got a volunteer to provide a home for them in Dan Angland. That was great but I still needed to look at his list to see if I had anything else. My dupe box is tiny now but I still managed another card. Since I was already there I started looking at other lists of course. My method is New Guys, Guys I owe recently, Guys I've owed forever, frequent trading partners, anybody that might need something I have. As I said, a tiny dupe box, but I still got out six envelopes. One was to Bill Ashton who hasn't been particularly easy to hit but he started a new quest for HOFer cards and I had a few, mostly early 80's stuff. After a week or so I began looking for acknowledgements from the guys I sent to so I knew they got the cards. Today, I had a 12:00 tee time and had some time to kill so I checked out server again. I hadn't seen anything from Bill yet but I thought since only one of the cards I sent was OBC friendly and the rest were early to mid 80's, maybe he acknowledged on the UV site. I checked it out and yes, he was there and seemed kind of happy to get them so I felt good. Now it was time to drive to the course so off I went. Stopped at the mailbox on the way out of the driveway because I forgot to check it Saturday. There was 2 bills and a fat envelope from Bill. It's an hour drive to the course I was playing at so once I got on the highway I tore open the package from Bill and beheld, nine '54 Topps cards, (Johnny Sain), six '55 Topps cards, six '56 Topps cards, (Amoros, Nuxhall) and eleven '57 Topps cards, (Furillo, Yankees TC, White Sox TC). This seems quite overwhelming to me but as we all know, it's the OBC way. Thank you much Bill, and thank you again Guru for the Wauction that started this little round. Peter Mead ================= Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2017 17:07:49 -0400 To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Coup de gras--merci beaucoup From: hoot_owl1@verizon.net So the official date I joined OBC was 9/2/2002--a little more than 15-years ago. Most of my collection was from 1959-to 1978 baseball, 1965-75 football, 1969-1973 basketball and 1971-1975 hockey. The collection was primarily Topps, with some odds and ends and a fairly large grouping of Post/Jello that my brothers and I (or probably my mom) cut off the back of cereal packages. Today--my collection is a little more varied LOL. Also today--Mike Rich decided that I needed to move beyond our Charles Bray status level by sending a box of 1970s OPC hockey cards. As a humorous aside, George Vrechek and I have been comparing card counts for a couple of years. Recently I told him I was close enough, and all I had to do was find some inexpensive lots of mid-1970s OPC hockey. I guess I did just that--it was simply one large OBC special lot. Mike has filled many holes over the last fifteen years (including pulling the last two 1963 Jellos I needed from his own set). Mike sends an SCP from the 1971-72 OPC set, 237 from the 1974-75 set, 85 from the 1975-76 set, 115 from the 1976-77 set and four 1977 glossies. Stars abound Espo, Stan Mikita, Rattelle, Perreault, Cournoyer, Billy Smith rookie, Clarke, the Broad Street Bullies, and my Buffalo Sabres among others. To My count that is about 461 cards--pushing my overall count of sports cards to 50,110 (for those so inclined my Excel file is attached). Fifteen years in a collecting brotherhood--it doesn't get any better than that! Thanks to Mike Rich and everyone in OBC. It continues to be fun--Lionel Carter status (glad I have a single graded card from his collection). Bob sends Joe Cunningham, Bobby Shantz, and "Bullet" Bob Turley AS from the Topps 1958 set, when I was but a wee lad of one year old. He writes that he hopes "these cards aren't too rough," when as it turns out they're in noticeably better condition than most of the rest of the cards in my 1958 set. Hard to believe that next year they'll be 60 years old.
