From: chris tripler A couple of envelopes have come in over the past week, BILL ASHTON hits the '60T set with a Milwaukee Braves RC of Al Spangler #143, then wears away the slow '63T set with a trio of fine hits #s 411, 433, and a waiver wire hit of the high number variety 547 Gus Bell, which would ordinarily go into the Gus & Max box, but we need it for the set; and BILL wraps it up with a '64T #94 which interestingly is another Braves RC of Britton (any relation to the reliever Britton of today's Orioles?) and Maxie. Many Thanks, BILL!!! Much appreciated! BOB DONALDSON adds a pretty interesting to the collection, it is an 8x11.5 portrait of John Russel Gibson, pitcher for the Red Sox done by the artist John Wheeldon. Picked up hits to 61F, 63F including Yaz), 69 Hoops, First year teams sets, 72 hi's, 54T, 57T, 53T, a few oddballs including 71T Super Yaz and Reggie Smith for the Sox collection, and a Dodger Exhibit. Also found a 52B for the Dodger set to put me within 1. Oh Yeah, Nick wouldn't let me leave the table until he sold me a 55 Hodges way cheap to get me to goal! Thanks for today go out to Steve Rittenburg with my first 1922 Exhibit of Sherrod Smith. Most awesome! Steve, we have you here with us as we go up and down the aisles! Kevin Martens hits me with a NICE 67 Hi. That set is inching closer! Thanks loads gents! Also, as I am Paul Korsts booth pulling cards for my first year teams sets, I get a call from Bob Reed asking if I still need a 52 Pee Wee. I said DUH! lol (card is a 52 high, kinda expensive, and it's Pee Wee). He says would I be interested in one for 50 bucks. Ummm YEAH. I tell him to hold it down until I get there. Card is exactly what you would expect it would be for 50 bucks. a few extra corners, kinda rough and seems to have been laminated in lacquer at one time. Obviously I pulled the trigger! (pics will follow at some point). A few of us hit Caeser's for some gambling after dinner. Nick parks himself at a blackjack table and is more than holding his own. Bob, Spike and myself make our way to the slots. I lose 5 bucks pretty fast. Bob is up and down. Spike has a system. If he hits in the first few spins, we walks away. Came out in the black. I put a 10 in one of the machines and on my 3rd pull, I get 21 free spins. The machine is going nuts by itself. In those spins, I get 9 more free. After all is said and done, it says I won 80 bucks! So Pee wee was paid for and I have 30 bucks to put toward the 2 52 Highs that JD has for me. So, I get 3 52 Hi's for $105! Can't beat that! Nice day at the National all around I'd say! However, he was certainly there in spirit and in the thoughts and conversations of all who attended - including many dealers who asked about him and/or sent their best wishes and concerns. Steve sent along an envelope for me via Mike Rich, who handed it to me before I drove to the Convention Center. So I put the envelope in the center console and it slipped out of sight for a couple days. I discovered it after closing down the show and it had two cloth stickers (Perez and Bench!) and a puzzle piece for my set. THANKS STEVE!! Ken spent most of the day (and most of his money) schlepping around half the Mantle run. Saw a couple of 52B Mantles, but 80% of a card for $200 doesn't work for me. The first hour or so was spent chasing the giveaways that are included in the VIP package. Stopped by a few dealers on the way to Ron Estes. Ron had his normal boxes of 90% off, so I grabbed a chair and spent the next 2 hours pulling 137 cards from 1952-67. I think I have hit some of next years goals already. Walked around a bit and found some nice 77 cloth and made a few hits there. After this email, I'll whittle down my wantlist. Of all those cards I pulled only 4 or 5 dupes. Many don't know but my mom has sort of mid-stage moving into later stage Alzheimer's. We attempted to leave her for the day because she had "company" coming over. Needless to say, since she's never been alone in the house(like ever), she started freaking out pretty badly, so we zipped home. But, the little time we got to meet, talk, and hang-out with other OBC memberswas just AMAZING!!! Dad raved about you guys all the way home, and kept saying "if we only had more time with those guys!" So, I think he enjoyed himself. I know I did. Mom's health probably rules out 2017, and everything beyond that is up in the air. But, if you're going to make the Shriner's showin Oct. in Mass. It'd be great to do a swap thing again after the show, some The one good thing of leaving early was that I got home early to hang with the boys, which was nice. On to the THANKS...in no particular order... MAC WUBBEN, who I wish I had more time to talk to about environmental stuff, handed over a nice '56T Nationals TC, a '58T Gil Hodges (2nd one from a handshake, good card), and a slew of '79OPC to the point I can almost start a set kill count down...Thank you, MAC! Very great to have these cards! SPIKE GLIDDEN shocks us with a super nice '53 Red Man #NL1 Charlie Dressen, and a nice grand slam of '58Ts. SPIKE, way to go man, Thanks!!!! With all that is going on, I really appreciate the time that you took to put this together, huge thanks, STEVE!!! and of the known handshakes, last but certainly not least, my mentor, SAL DOMINO, who was busier than a mother hen with a 100 chicks at National, had time to just blast the collection with a '54T, a '56T Pirates TC, 5 hits tothe '58T set including Whitey Herzog, that set may fall in 2017 as well, acouple of '59Ts and a four-bagger to the '60T set, which officially has more cards coming from OBC than anywhere else. SAL, you're amazing, what elsecan be said, super THANKS mentor! Now, because I'm a rookie...rookies make mistakes, and I added handshakes to the buy piles before giving attribution, so my humblest apologies... I think BOB REED handed dad and I a pile of '63Ts, and some UV stuff to finish off some sets. Now, the reason I think it was BOB was there was a sked from the New Britain Bees for this year...so, maybe BOB? Well, whoever it was, many, many thanks -very much appreciated! two more unknown handshakes yielded a couple of '78T FB of Tarkenton & Largent, '79T FB including a Chiefs TC, five '80T FB, and some great (and in NMcondition, might I add) '78-79T and '79-80T Basketball including Dennis Johnson, Bill Walton, Wes Unseld, Rick Barry, and Chris Ford. So, whoever theRAOK person was, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! the other one included 4 '55B and a '57T Phillies TC. These are super nice to add to the collection and get some hits on these two less focused on sets. Again, to the great person who handed these to me (of the group there was KEN M., Ron Hoehne, Andy Huntoon, Nick Pellitier, Ed Schott, Randy Welk, Kevin Martens, and Bob Reed are the group of suspects...it was one of you guys!!!...ha I also want to thank MATT YUDT and KEVIN MARTEN as dad and I absolutely pummeled their dupes boxes. We hauled out an amazing amount of cardboard from these two fine gentlemen, as such an extra special THANK YOU!!!!! Again, I thought that was terrific spending a few minutes with some great folks who share such a passion. Thank you all again. cheers,TripOBC 2015 ================= Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2016 11:34:39 +0000 (UTC) To: yahoogroups Subject: Addendum to previous handshake thanks post... I must admit that after the first walk through I was underwhelmed. It seemed like a lot of PSA cards and other museum pieces and VG cards at EX+ prices. After day one, I thought that I would have done better using the travel money on ebay. But day two was entirely different. It began by bumping into a bunch of OBCers at the first table. I finally got to meet Sal, Ken, Andy, and Spike and had a chance to see Bob Reed again. To my great surprise, they all had =93handshakes=94 for me. They caught me completely by surprise with their generosity. Things got even better as I added Exhibit cards to my wantlist and spent the day picking up nearly 100 at a few bucks a pop. Day 2 ended with Spike finding one of my 2 remaining 1935 Goudeys for me. We met at a table of a former OBCer (I forget his name) who happened to have 2 of my missing T205s (Joss and Wilhlem). Now out of cash, I beat a hasty retreat back to NYC. On to my thanks. Bob Reed provides Grant and Wilhelm from the 1960 Leaf set. Spike sends 3 1952 Topps and a 62 Post Frank Robinson Steve Rittenberg sent an envelope to the National with two 1952 Topps In today=92s mail came 3 more 1952 Topps from Jin Craig and finally, I must single out Sal who=92s handshake was a very generous 17cards to my Starting Nine collection and a T206 Wagner. There was also an Asheville Tourists schedule. But the interesting card is a 1958 Rip Repulski card. It is of interest for two reasons - one, it has an actual small rip near the name, and two, my young daughters and I were just looking at that card together on ebay last night. We look at cards together before bed sometimes, and my youngest daughter likes the colorful cards like 1958 - and this card has yellow, her favorite color, as the background color. Pretty ironic to receive it today and show it to my daughters! (I have a son also) PETER MEAD sends two packed flats of cards of all types, some of which I believe were waiver claims. There were 1954 Bowman and 1955 Topps, a 1963 #1 NL Batting Leaders (F. Then there was a baker's dozen of mid 1970s hockey and basketball cards including a Borje Salming. From: Ron H Hey all, I'm still the last proud member to join this fine OBC group but not so proud to give such late well deserved thanks to those members I met at the show that weekend. A little recap. Alexa, my daughter/ travel partner, and I made the 5+ hour ride down on Friday with only normal traffic delays and got into our hotel around 5:30. We checked out the area we stayed in and found an Indian restaurant to dine at. We walked off the meal on the boardwalk. Saw some live music and checked out the casinos before heading back. On Sat. morning I put on my fine OBC forest green T and collected my spending $. Lex dropped me off at the convention center around 10. She proceeded on her day trip to a Craft beer and Crab festival. When I arrived, I called Sal and was greeted and let in by Ken who escorted me thru the showroom floor to Mike McCann's area. I planted myself there for a bit and was greeted by the steady wave of OBCers. Some I had met before and others I met for the first time. In random order I met these great guys thru out the day and exchanged handshakes with many of them: Ken M, Joel F, Jim C., Kevin M, Bob R, Sal, Taylor, Wes, Andy H., Jerry B, Matt Y, Ed S.,Chris T., Randy W, Nick P., Spike, Mac & Mike R. I even got 3rd party handshakes from Steve R., and Joe A. wishing I could have met them in person. What a great fun day that seemed to fly by. Although I didn't make any wild major purchases, I did get to cross off numbers on my want lists. I also dropped some big $ (in my opinion) for about 50 nice Kellogg's MLB cards to jump start that new effort (now on my site). At the end of the day, tired and starving, I got picked up around 6 and we found a fun Mexican place to eat. I dropped her off at hotel, grabbed my cards and headed over to the swap meet. Again a great time for me, re-meeting up with everyone, talking cards and stuff and pilfering boxes of cards. On Sunday, Lex and I spent the day at the beach. It was a hot day but the water was nice and the waves were great! Nice buffet dinner followed that Monday was travel home day. We def. made better time on the road for the return. Did a 2 hour stop at the Hudson Valley Outlets to break up the Today, I'm still going thru and putting away cards I got that weekend. Thanks again to all.... until next time. From: "Greg Henthorn" MIKE RUMLEY-WELLS acts with very high precision and stealth. In the past few days, he has completed no less than three sets for me - and most importantly, the 1959 Topps set! Around the time when I was 12 in 1984, I got the vintage collecting bug, and 1959 was my favorite. I had Mantle, Gibson RC, and many other HOFers along with several commons (I specifically remember having the Bob Skinner card, who at the time in the 80s was a batting coach for the Pirates). When I got back into collecting cards a little over a year ago, I quickly joined OBC, and I never would have thought I would complete my own, hand-collated, 1959 set. This is my crowning achievement in terms of collecting cards! It spurred me to put a 1952 wantlist on my site - why not! Mike sent me my last card, Darrell Johnson, a high number. It must be hard to find because it was one of Jake Brewer's last two cards (maybe his last card) also. In addition to Hero Mike Rumley-Wells following OBC members also contributed to my completion of the set: Galbreath, Mead, Freedman, Elwell, Wubben, Smart, Whitworth, McLaughlin, Fitts, Coker, Taylor, Stan Hack (Koufax), Gray, Adriance, Pillion, DeLott, Thayer, Moleta, and Martens. In addition to completing the 1959 set, Mike completed two other sets that I had my eyes on as a kid but never completed: - 1978 Topps basketball set, with last card Dave Cowens. I also had help from the following with that set: Tysver, Lyons, Mroz (King RC), and - 1980 Topps football set, with last card Herman Weaver. The following OBCers also contributed to my set quest: Goetsch, Elliott, Denning, and Once again, thanks to Mike Rumley-Wells, and thanks to all the OBC members who have helped me with these sets. From: Yaz I thought I had already posted this but double-checked and found I was mistaken. A couple of days ago, I got a long envelope from Mike Glasser containing 4 1975 Topps mini's, (Rick Monday, Ted Sizemore and Jim Palmer!! Also, Eduardo Rodriquez who I was sure was pitching on my fantasy team but I guess not 'cause this guy is two years older than me.) I also received a 1957 Topps hit, Mickey Vernon. The Vernon came with four paper patches on the back in the corners so I used the reliable 'Spit' method with a edge of plastic to scrape them off. All the paper came off easily and now I can read the card fine but the glue the kid used kind of left shiny spots in the corners that look like a UV coating. The card is still 83% uncontaminated so confidence is high that I will not be admonished for writing about it. Anyway, thank you Mike, for the great cards! The question was: Who is the only MLB player to hit 3 HR's in a game after coming off the bench? I'll let you think about it while I describe the contents. Apparently Nick was so quick on the draw to send me hockey cards, that he didn't notice I had corrected the year on my wantlist (and email after a quick catch of my error by Rick Lyons). These two did bring back some memories instead of filling a binder spot, as they were from my first venture into collecting hockey cards 1977-78. THANKS NICK!!  MIKE RUMLEY-WELLS found a dozen 1969 stamps for me - and I haven't posted a list of these, since I need most of them. Included were names like Jim Hunter, Jim Wynn and trivia answer - Art Shamsky! THANKS MIKE!!  Sal, was Art one of the free signers you got when I waited in line with you? Thought it sounded f amiliar... TAYL, Ken M - Shamsky homered in the 8th, 9th and 11th innings on Aug. 12th, 1966 and hit a PH homer two days later (he was a DNP the next day, despite a three-homer game) to tie a record for 4 HR's in 4 consecutive plate appearances. All four homers either tied the game or put his Reds ahead, but the Pirates prevailed in both contests. Those are the first I have for that particular issue. In fact, because of these I will likely list both the 60 Leaf and 72 Milton Bradley cards - at least the Cardinals. Thanks, Brian! MIKE RUMLEY-WELLS sent two items from a really fun shop we discovered near his sister's house. One, a 1956 Topps Cardinal Bill Virdon. Didn't I try tobuy this card? Obviously not by 1909, since his shirt is clearly missing the silent H. Thanks again, Matt...I'll be looking for something to send along... Ken Goetsch ================= To: "'OBC-Thanks'" Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2016 11:08:43 -0400 Subject: Jimi Thayer Rocks!! From: "Greg Henthorn" JIMI THAYER stuffed some awesome and well targeted cards in a puffy and sent them my way - a real RAOK. The average condition of these is probably EX+. He hit several tough-to-hit sets with surgical precision. The first card I see when I open the package is the 1960 Topps Jim Gentile #448 rookie card. I don't have a "top ten" list like many of you, but this one would have been at or near the top of my list, and something I have been searching for. Along with another high number 1960 Topps (Jerry Staley), Jimi leaves me with just three cards to go to complete my 1960 Topps set, just a couple weeks after completing my 1959s. This is getting very fun for me, and I love these colorful cards from that era. Jimi doesn't stop there. He sends 8 HOFers from the 1960 Fleer set (Waddell, Rickey, Chance, Bottomley, Derringer, Rice, Barrow, and 3 Finger Brown). Then he decides I have too many stars on my 1975 Topps mini wantlist, so he sends me nine hits including the Fred Lynn RC, Tony Oliva, Carlton Fisk, Dave Winfield, and a Mantle MVP. And a hit to my tough-to-hit 1977 Topps football set. The last card I see in the package tops it off. It is a 1971-72 Lew Alcindor. This is by far my best basketball card I've ever had. I'm not good at grading but this thing is probably EX-Mt or better. Like the 1958-1960 Topps baseball sets, it has a colorful background and lettering, and it depicts Kareem at a very young age. Kareem was one of my basketball heroes growing up in the 1980s. Oh, and there is a cool card from 2005 that I am comfortable mentioning, because there is no UV coating on it. It shows our very own Jimi Thayer sporting an Indians hat and shirt! I'm floored by Jimi's unilateral generosity. OBC is hard to describe, but I'm thrilled to be a part of the group.
