KEN MORGANTI sent me a beautiful 1960 Topps #350 Mickey Mantle. I picked up the Mathews All Star card the other day, so this leaves me to only 7 more cards to complete the 1960 Topps set. Ken's waiver wires have been extremely generous, and this one is even moreso. I have been in OBC about a year now, and I never would have thought that I would need just a few more cards to complete both the 1959 and 1960 sets. It's made card collecting a ton of fun for me and I am grateful to Ken and the other OBC members. Very cool, thanks Ken! KEN MORGANTI's waiver wire cards included 4 1979-80 Topps hockey cards, 22 1977-78 Topps basketball graybacked variations, and 66 1980-81 Topps hockey cards. Included were cards of Bobby Hull as a phantom Blackhawk, Moses Malone, and a bunch of guys who remain nameless unless you scratch off the coating covering the names of the 1980-81 hockey players. This must have been a one-time-only Topps concept. It was like they were trying to sell to kids. How silly. MIKE GLASSER sends 6 Pepsi Glove tags I needed. Mike Rich got me started on these at a National several years ago by providing a big starter set. Mike found Nolan Ryan, George Brett among others to send along. All very nice mail today. Actually as I pick up some cards like these, my wantlist expands a little to show cards I need instead of cards that I have in miscellaneous sets. This week Larry called and described some items he had found at the local show he spoke about in a previous ramble. Larry bought a mini-Phillie collection and sent them to me as a not so secret ROAK. Included in this were some items I had only heard of but never seen (in person or scans of!!). The box was opened tonight once Spencer was asleep and included a matchbook schedule from 1940, a grouping of Philadelphia Inquirer Album photos from 1949 incl. Roberts and Ashburn, a1979(?) Spring Training scorecard signed on the back by Ashburn, a 1951 Philadelphia Inquirer Baseball Reader (this was an insert into the paper and something I had heard of but had never seen) that included rosters and schedules for the Phillies and A's, a Jay's picture pack from the mid-1960s with original envelope, an original October 4, 1950 Philadelphia Inquirer World Series Guide (another thing that I had only seen scans of, and the one scan I have is different than this one...I think it was a different date but cannot remember right now), a couple of early 50s Phillies decals, a grouping of early 1950s Philadelphia Bulletin pin-ups of Phillies players including Ashburn, large glossy Current Illustrated News (probably a broadside meant to advertise the paper) stating that the Phillies won the pennant in 1950 (rough condition but super rare), a large newspaper insert or special edition from 1953 featuring schedules of the Phillies and A's and Baseball records, two team color photos (1948 and 1950), and finally a couple of newspaper clipping about the young new kid coming up to the Phillies in 1949, Richie Ashburn, and his nomination for ROY that year. Larry also included a nice note, as usual, and reminds me that I have been a part of OBC for 25 years (more than half my life!) and OBC never disappoints. This one hits all four of the sports that I collect. The baseball cards included a handful of hits to 1963, 1965, and 1970, including Manny Mota, Jim Hart, and a Sam McDowell all star card. Not to be confused with Roddy McDowall of Planet of the Apes; I just saw an advertisement at my local movie theater that the original movie will be shown later this month - I will be there. George included a 1969 Topps Earl Gros, a Steelers fullback. He included a handful of basketball hits as well from the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons, including Chet Walker. For good measure, George threw in a 1979-80 New York Rangers checklist for my hockey collection. MIKE GLASSER sends a very nice package of Old Baseball Cards. Nine great hits to my 1954 Bowman, 1957 Topps, and 1961 Topps sets. Along with a Tony Kubek card, he includes a 1957 Eddie O'Brien. On the front of the card, I noticed "S.S.-P." as the position designation, so I had to read the back of the card. They sent cards to my home in Alabama. A friend sent me a box of mail and packages that arrived yesterday at the apartment I've been in in Houston since mid-May. From James, I received a few Blue Backs from a DS offering. I'm getting close on this set. I still need a couple of stars I think (Schoendienst and maybe one other) and the rest are commons. Mike Rich sent a box with a big pile of 1973 TCMA All-time greats along with some 1974 and 1975 TCMA cards that I'm not familiar with. I still don't know what happened to the large pile of TCMA cards that I bought at the National last year from Chandy. I think somehow they were misplaced at the swap. I have a long memory for stupid mistakes like this. Mike's package eases the pain a bit. Mike also included some Hank Greenberg items for my cousin in NJ. It would be great to deliver these in person but that won't happen this year so I'll have to mail them. Jay sent a heavy package of vintage Wacky Pack cards. Most are classics from the 70s but I also see there are some rare diecuts from the 60s. Wow. These were listed as DS but Jay refused to accept payment. This RAOK will need to be met with very large payback. Thank you all. I just wanted to thank all the OBC'ers that helped with this one - (THANKS JOE ADRIANCE, SEAN MCGOWAN, EARL KILBOURN, JEFF WHITWORTH, BRIAN BETZA, JAMES MOLETA, JAKE ELWELL, ANDY HUNTOON, THOMAS VALACAK, DON RICE, WESSHEPARD, RICH NIESSEN, MATT YUDT, ROB BESSETTE, AARON SHIRLEY, JOE DENNING, LYNN MILLER, JIMI THAYER, MARK ZENTKOVICH, RANDY WELK, ROB FITTS, KENT GOTO, MIKE DILLON, TOM ELLIOTT, KEN PILLION, ANTHONY ARBEENY, GREG HENTHORN, ED HUTCHINSON, JOHN STAMPER, JAY TYSVER, SAL DOMINO, CHRIS TRIPLER, KENT GOTO) I completed 77 and 74 Topps during my first year in OBC, so this marks my 3rd completed vintage Topps set. And I am under 5 cards on three more (75, 78, 80)! Thanks guys, it's very cool to have a complete 1976 Topps set! ================= Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2016 17:47:33 -0400 To: "OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com" Subject: A pair of thanks.... He answered the football call quickly, with 31 hits to the two-team lists. 1969, 1971 Game (Starr), 1972 x4, 1973, 1974, 1975 x6, 1976 x10, 1977 x2, 1979 x5. Thanks, Mike!!! Unfortunately, John was not home at the time but I left him a goodie bag. Mike and Iexchanged a customary OBC handshake which included me getting a needed '62bazooka Phillie. After dropping Mike's car off to get the AC checked we headed to our first stop, Valley Baseball Cards. One of the oldest shops in Los Angeles...generally a great place to search and the owner is great. I found nothing (really!) but Mike made a great Hockey purchase (GREAT!)...and a few other interesting items he dug up (see his blog or emails). We then drove 40 minutes north to my neck of the desert and stopped at my local shop(usually stop by there about once every six months). They are hit and missbut usually have a bit of vintage. While looking around I spot a large 5000 count box behind the counter marked "Phillies" buried under ten other things. I inquire and after moving the five larges boxes on top of it, I bringit around the counter. Briefly looked inside and see lots of UV but a few things that might be interesting (wait for it) and Mike suggests I offer the guy $20 for the box which he accepts. While moving the stuff piled on top, Mike finds a box of oddball stuff that included a Cramer series he needed, some cool Perma-Graphics cards, and a few other oddball things. In the case was a small box called "new stuff" but really meant new purchases of vintage stuff. Inside, Mike pulled a Mother's Cookie PCL for a buck, and I gota '41 Playball, two '73 Topps checklists (* and **) for $9. Leave the store happy, eat lunch, take Mike to my house to see Zoe, Spence, and Tiffany, oh, and some t205s and pre-war Phillies. Then it is time to take him back. It was a great OBC day and a nice break from changing diapersand bottle feeding. Late last night was the first time I got to sit down and look at the big Phillies box. First thing I notice is several complete Star company sets of Phillies of Schmidt, Carlton, Ricky Jordan, Dykstra, etc. Several tough onestoo. The star sets literally cover the price I paid for the entire box. There were several TCMA Phillies sets and random TCMA cards from other sets. Next is a small baggie containing the entire 1975 Topps Phillies team set minus the Schmidt. But that was fine as the next baggie contained an entire Topps run of Schmidts from 1974 to 1988!!! There was also a 1975 Schmidt, Boone, Carlton, and Anderson minis. There were oddball Schmidts galore, everything from drakes, nestles, fleer stuff, etc. About 150. About 200 Carltons of the same ilk. There were 12 1968 Game Phillies, a 1965 embossed Phillie, several 1970s kelloggs. There were two '62 stamps hiding underneath the UV stuff. The UV stuff consisted of nearly 3,000 cards about half of which were serially numbered including a couple of 1 of 1's and some neat Schmidts, Ashburns, Roberts, new stuff. The UV stops at 2010 but included almost nothing I was familiar with except 1991 Stadium Club and 1993 Finest (including a refractor!). I think for $20 I would have been just happy with the 1000 pre-1990 cards but it was sort of fun going through everything as it wasall mixed up...I found one of '68 game sandwhiched between two fleer ultracards that were uv-stuck. I did my best to send out the call to his many OBC hobbyist is possible to join us. Has Bob mentioned Wayne Delia madethe trip from Poughkeepsie but my arrival was delayed due to some errands I had to run with my daughter and some terrible traffic out of the city of New York. I did miss Wayne as a result but Bob was very gracious host and Ithoroughly enjoyed the evening. Bob Allowed me to invite my cousin Jim who I wanted to see and lived nearby and we spent the evening looking at Bob's collection joy each company and sharing a meal prepared by his lovely wife. Conversation was wide and diverse, leaving at 10 PM when I had to leaveto get back to the city wasn't what I wanted to do we were having a great time. Bob has a wonderful home on Candlewood lake in a beautiful part of Connecticut and if you ever get the invitation to join him at his home you absolutely must take it. My only regret in the whole situation was not being able to schedule my time to meet Wayne as well. Bob and I have been sending cardboard to each other for over a decade and of course cardboard was exchanged on this day as well. Bob handed me a 1919 Zeenuts and a card from what is known as the black set in this case the joker. Wayne also came loaded with cardboard and plopped down four 1940 play balls including Hall of Famer Paul Waner. My handshake or Wayne will have tobe mailed when I returned to Detroit.
