Luckily my 14 hours of sleep recharged me. So i went ahead and drove up with Tom, who mentioned our trade, but also gave anOBC handshake, by way of early 70s hockey anx a 52 bowman! Found a few tall boy hoops at Mark Smith's table, did well with Paul Korst, who had some really neat stuff in the .50 cent and dollar boxes, to include a couple 71 bazookas and even a 66 high number. Got a dozen 52 Topps Wings there too. After a few cheap 53 Topps from JD's table i called it a day. Saw a lot of good stuff. Didnt get a chance to hit Wayne Johnson's table though. JD Heckathorn and his wife Stacey always do well getting the dealers.I saw at least 6 or 7 dealers that set up at the National each year, so comes the cardboard we like. Hope to see a large contingent of OBC at Strongsville this year, weather may be a little better in April, so the drive may not be too bad. Gersh, i may have to drag you up I-75 this time! Down to one card, the 1974T Traded set needed #51 John Heise of the Cardinals...now, no more.Down to one card in the '68T Games set, #7 Frank Robinson, JOHN just closed it out. As if that wasn't enough...John sends over a nice '59T #475 Jack Harshman -pitcher for the Orioles who compiled a wincing 12-16 record, but had a respectable 2.90 ERA in 1958...run support boys. Also received a nice '65T Embossed #53 Al Spangler and a couple of '80Ts #40 Carlton Fisk and #622 Mario Soto for the second son set, also down to one card... Thank you, thank you, thank you, John! First for you generosity, but also for being so meticulous as to go through the WL and pick these items out (Dad & I have a massive, sprawling, and some what crazy WL if you've never seen it). And another thanks for OBC, for without, these efforts would be lessfruitful, fun, and as inexpensive as they are! As per my 2016 goals, when a set is retired/killed, we will add a new one. Most recently as Saturday, I (Chris) picked up ten 1970 Supers, so we are collecting them now. And although it's been on the WL for awhile, I'd say the 1969 Topps Deckles are definitely on the WL. John hit my wantlist with two dozen early 70s OPChee baseball cards, 2 Fleer Globetrotter cards, and a Kellogg card that wasn't actually butt-ugly. Great to meet John finally. I was John's mentor in 2008. I can't remember giving him any hot tips. Thanks John. From: James Silva Greg Henthorn is working on his diversity skills and he applied them to my want list by hitting four sets with four cards. A 1951 Red Back of Jim Hegan starts it off. The Red Backs are one of the first vintage sets I intentionally started just because I thought they lookedso cool. Never saw Jim began play but I definitely watched his son, Mike, play for the A=E2=99s. Next up - a 1961 Topps of rookie, Joe McClain. Joe only pitched in the majors for two seasons - both for the Senators - losing 18 his first year even though his stats look average. The next season he was a train wreck so I can see why it was his last. I imagine this means I have one of his only two cards. Teddy Ballgame? Yes, Ted as a manager in the 1970 Topps set. His first yearas a manager was a good one, leading the Senators to a winning record. Notmany managers can say that! The last of the four is a 1979 Topps Jim Palmer. Palmer had just completed his 8th season out of his last nine with a t least 20 wins. That is pretty remarkable, even in the =E270s when pitchers still threw complete games. The one season of the nine where he didn=E2=99t win 20 was the only season out of the 11 from 1967 through 1978 where his ERA =E2=9Cballooned=E2=9D into the 3=E2=99s. Dang! Thanks a lot Greg, for the great cards! PS - I also completed a set tonight finishing the 1980 Topps set with a single card Ebay purchase. Went to the local card show and met up with Doug DeJong, Taylor Schock and Mark Holland. My first meeting with Doug, and repeat meetings with Mark and Taylor. Always great to see OBCers. Didn't get to spend too much time with Mark, as, poor guy, he was heading off to Las Vegas for vacation. My sympathies, since the high here in Raleigh today and tomorrow is 33, with a lot of wind (normal high is around 55 this time of year). Great handshakes, as I walked away with a half dozen Hostess cards, including the Secretary of Defense, Garry Maddox, and a couple of much needed 63's, a 56 white back and 10% of my wantlist for the 64 set--Billy Gardner! Many thanks. Also great to see Kurt T. there and he helped me knock off some of those pesky 54 Bowman variations very economically, as well as an OBC $5 1970 Johnny Bench. Doug DeJong made the trip over from Ashville (`4 hrs away), Bob Neill and Taylor Schock were there from Raleigh & Durham respectively while I made the trip up from Wilmington (~2.5 hours). It was my first time meeting Doug but it was like we were long lost friends. It is amazing how similar ourcollecting goals are. Doug would see a card and comment that it was almosttoo nice and he laughed and said that we need to crease it to match the others. As Bob mentioned earlier cardboard was exchanged. I was the recipient of several type cards, a 54T Spahn, 6 56T, 2065T & 22 69T. Then we spent a lot of time at Kurt Toudot=E2=99s table searching thru his discount bin and the stack of 50 cent and $1 cards on his table. He had 58s & 59s for 50 cents each. The 53 =E2=93 57 Topps and Bowman were $1. I hated to leave any of them on the table. What a deal. So I sprung for $100 totalfrom Kurt today with the biggies being a 55B Berra, 68T Managers Dream, 8 55 other Bowman including 3 umpires and a 62 Post Juan Marichal. I also picked up a 66T Billy Williams for $10 from Steve Bradenburg (always travels with Jack Zerby). He also had a box of 65-69 cards in nice shape includinghigh numbers for 6 for $5. And they were in numerical order. We spent some time (and money) at Steve table too. Thanks for the camaraderie today guys, let=E2=99s do it again soon. The OBC hand shakes were awesome, as Taylor handed me a pair of 64s and 4 - 58 Topps hits, Mark gave me a six pack of 58 Topps, and Bob gave me a 55Topps, a 55 Bowman, a 62 Batting leaders card, and 4 58 Topps including the Dodgers TC. Thanks guys. I had suggested a weekend get away to my wife in Raleigh and it just happened a card show was there for Valentines weekend -- am I romantic or what?? She is a good sport and happily accommodated my traipsing around the show floor for the day. Not much traipsing necessary as most of my time and money was spent at Kurt Tourdot's table. I was able to finish off the last ten cards of my 1961 Fleer Set, and all but the Mantle for my 1956 Topps set! Yes!! I also go the 1970 Topps set down to three (635 - Allison, 654 Gamble RC, or 689 Tepedino anyone?). All in all a great day, especially getting to meet up with the other OBCers. It was the worst of times. What is that supposed to mean anyways? Well, my story begins in Everett, MA with a young man waiting patiently by the mailbox...  After gathering up the day's delivery, he goes through the envelopes. "Junk, bill, bill, junk, junk, OBC ENVELOPE FROM TJ, YES!!" The rest of the mail quickly ends up thrown in a heap on the table and he scurries upstairs to rip out the contents. Inside are a pair of cardboard treasures: a Fleer Famous Feats and a Hostess Pete Vuckovich.  He places them down next to another envelope from PETER MEAD that had been there for several days. It contained a single card from the 1979 Kellogg's set that had escaped proper filing procedure until now. "Let them eat snack cakes!" he thought to himself as he crossed the numbers off his list. "I prefer the cards anyway."   And as he placed the cards into the binder, he was heard to whisper, "It is a far, far better thing they've done with their dupes th an they have ever done before. It is a far, far better place I'm putting them, than they have ever known." THANKS TJ and PETER!! Last Sunday, I flew to DC to provide training at our facilities in that area. While making my plans, I decided to intentionally fly a day early (on Sunday) so I could spend Monday with OBCers!! But I forgot to control the weather. It started snowing Sunday night and continued most of the day on Monday. I made my way to Rockville, MD to see a friend for breakfast @ 8:30 and from there I went to see Ant Arbeeny at his house a few miles away. What a place! Someday we should all provide video tours of our homes. Mine would probably be considered a disaster area. Ant's is amazing. It's a wonderful home for him and his family. But he is only allocated a small closet for his cards. Not even room for binders from what I could see. Ant made up for this with his hospitality. He already had a buffet of snacks laid out for everyone. And he was ready to cook lunch as well. At my house, we have delivery pizza when OBCers come over. At Ant's house, we had freshly made chicken parmesan sandwiches and pulled pork. Attendance suffered due to the snow. Peter Mead, Andy Cook, Rich Robinson, Joe Adriance, Dan Cipra were all no shows. Plus too far for Brian Betza. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. Ed Schott did come down all the way for Baltimore. And Mac Wubben uber'ed his way over as well. Typically, I could not find some of the cards I brought for people. I will work to get them in the mail this year. I mean this week. Despite my failure, Ant, Mac and Ed each let me pig out from their dupes boxes. Here's what I ended up with. I'm not sure which pile came from which person... Topps Magic FB common 1955 Topps Red Sox common trimmed down to the size of a 1951 Bowman. I LOVE these. I'd like to collect trimmed team sets. :-) 1950 Bowman copyright variations 1949 Bowman #13 Bob Chesnes 1962 Post - 4 out of the last 20 that I need. Wow. Hostess cards: I don't care about Hostess/Twinkie. Ant let me raid his dupes, including his stashes of Twinkies dupes that will go into my mixed sets. 1961 Posts - I probably took the stack and will waiver out the extras. This year. Or decade. Or most likely at an upcoming National. 1975 and 1977 full sized Twinkie panels. I might collect full sized panels after Jay Tyser bombed me with about 40 from 1977 a couple of months ago. Non-sports including cherry picking from a box of stuff with cards from sets that Ant isn't collecting. I found a 1976 Star Trek upgrade, several Welcome Back Kotter cards, one of the two Fighting Marines that I need, several 1957 Topps Planes high numbers 1970/1971 Topps Scratchoffs 1969 Topps Decals 1970 Kelloggs Football including OJ 1934 Diamond Star ultra-high number #105 Ernie Lombardi from Mac. I will be paying for this one for a long time. Ed also brought a little box stuffed with Red Sox cards for me to pour through. I promise to waiver everything I cannot use. Unfortunately, the day had to end. I had more people to see and Ed & Mac needed to get safely home. I gave Mac a ride home and even then I got the better end of the deal. In exchange for a ride back to his house, I received a tour of his house, a chat with his wife, and some Mac-made cheesecake to be consumed at a later date. I was able to leave a few cards for people there: Ed should have something for Peter Mead and Mac should have something for Joe Adriance. The others will get theirs in the mail in 201x. Time to end this ramblings/thanks but the good feelings will be there for a long, long time. Thank you Mac, Ed and especially Ant. Steve Rittenberg From Ed Schott 1961 + 1963 Posts. I probably took most of Ed's dupes. ================= Date: Sat, 20 Feb 2016 20:09:57 -0500 To: OBC Thanks Subject: Thanks to From: Joel Freedman Greg Conway for a topps 1957 Topps George Susce, 3 1979 Fleer football cards and 200 UV football and basketball cards. A few  Feb 14ths ago, I came home from work to find a pile of 20 (or so)1951 Bowman cards laid across the bedwith a nice card. I am pretty sure I wrote out a thank you to this same server, maybe 10 years ago (or so)

This year, after a decade-long pause, wifey ordered another stack of 51B, these from super dealer and super guy Mark Macrae. There were ~15 cards (or so) about half were HOFers and it wiped out my low number list sans Mickey. The gift package walloped the highnumbers too, as I only need 14 more to call it a near set (see the caveat for Mick, I do have Mays)

So super thanks to wifey Julie for tolerating and sometimes participating in the baseball cards addiction and the 24 years(or so)

OBC Forever,
Brian

From: Steve Rittenberg Wow. Three OBC envelopes in a single day. I can't remember the last time I was blessed like that. Leading off, OBC rookie Nate Mack sent me a few 1956 Topps Roundup cards that put the rest of my set to shame. The newest OBC member, Mike Glasser, follows up with several T221 Champion Women Swimmers. These were the swimsuit models of the day. If I squint hard enough, I think I can see Sal Domino photobombing at least one of these cards. And long time OBCer Larry Zurawski hits me out of the blue with a couple of tasty Hostess cards. 1975 Monday (still on Dodger telecasts?) and 1979 Munson (we HATED him, even after his tragic accident) are now proud pieces of my collection. Thank you all. I'm working to get my life in better shape so I can promptly send you the payback you deserve. First up was NATE MACK (he of the very cool Mickey Mantle/Henry Aaron return address label) who chipped in with five hits to my 1969 Topps OBC Baseball set. This was the first year I didn't collect cards as a kid, and I enjoy picking up where I left off all those years ago. Thanks Nate! Next was old pro LARRY TIPTON who sends his typical cornucopia of esoterica. Guru continues to amaze me with what he comes up with. How about an unopened pack of 1972 Donruss "Vote" stickers (I think I was a Muskie kid), a few '52 Bowman "Television & Radio Stars of the National Broadcasting System", and a 1964 Leaf Munsters, smuggled across the border from Canada. Finally, tucked within all the non-sport items, I find a slightly short Goudey featuring Jim Elliot of the Philadelphia A's. Great stuff Guru. Thanks! Last up was LARRY ZURAWSKI who does some serious damage to my 1971 Kelloggs set. From: Geno Wagner Fellas -- I arrived home from an 8-day trip with nights in Wilmington, NC, Wichita, NYC, Memphis, Atlanta, and Ft Walton Beach. Probably something else, too...I just can't remember. When I walked in the door, my wife was cleaning the floor from where a toilet upstairs had leaked through the sheet rock. Nice. This was after I noticed the woodpecker was back and drilled a hole in one of my windows again. My wife bought a fake owl, but never put it up there. If I ever see that woodpecker, he's going to be flying away with that fake owl jammed up his keister. Anyway, when I finally got to the stack of bills, I noticed an OBC envelopefrom old-timer James Moleta. I don't get too many OBC envelopes, so it instantly brightened my day! Inside was a T206 Sovereign that I needed...and not only that, but it was Cubbie Jack Pfiester! It's always a good day when you get a Cub! Pfiester was quite the pitcher in his day. He threw over 1000 innings and retired with a 2.02 ERA, not too shabby. He was the Cubs pitcher in the famous Fred Merkle game in 1908. And, it's one of the cooler T206 poses, I might add. Next is a "gem very good" 1947-66 Exhibit card of Steve Gromek, with gentle creases, slightly rounded corners, and what appears to be an ink stamp of a star on the front of his uniform. In other words perfect condition. Thanks very much! Nate sends a 1962 Post Cereal card of Dick Stuart and a 1963 Post Ed Charles, both in terrific condition. Both have been among my favorite incomplete sets and it seems I've hit a plateau in finding any cards, commons or stars, to cut down my want list so these are really appreciated. I think due to the universal hatred of Lime Jell-O and Post Raisin Bran, some of the common cards from these sets are way more expensive than the stars and Hall of Famer's. Muchas gracias! That means I have been a member of OBC for more than half my life...I used to be the "kid" in the group as Larry put it. I was the youngest member for many years and was often referred to as the kid. Now I have a kid of my own!!! My Phillies list, t205 obsession, birthyear set obsession all started with OBC. All that being said, I still get that thrill seeing an OBC envelope in the mail ...Today was a special day, there were two!! As my list gets tougher and tougher, I generally get less and less envelopes. The first one was from one of my oldest trading partners and friends, Larry Tipton. Larry sent along the final card for my 1964 Topps set. A nice Roberto Clemente. I have been looking for an affordable (read CHEAP) for some time but just have not had luck (or money). The one Larry sent is in typical OBC condition with creases and OC but better than many of my '64s. It makes putting this set to bed even more special because it came from an OBCer (with a nice note too). So, thank you very much "Guru" from "the kid." The second envelope today was from new member James Craig. It hits another one of my toughest wantlists with a '56 Charley Neal. That card is non-existent on the west coast and when you can find it, the price is insane because he is a Dodger. Been looking for one for awhile. This brings the '56 set down to one single card left, #251, Yankees team card...James,I hope OBC is as good to you for the next 25 years as it has been to me for the last 25...welcome to the group. After getting blown away earlier in the week by a package from Larry Z, what should appear in my mailbox today but a package from none other than the self-proclaimed Guru of baseball cards, Larry T. Again, this was no ordinary OBC envelope (is there even such a thing as an ordinary OBC envleope??), it contained two 1963 high number rookie star cards, including Dave McNally and "Le Grand Orange" himself, Rusty Staub as Colt 45! If that wasn't enough for a great package, it also has two 67 SP high numbers--Mickey Stanley, and that elusive final card, none other than future HOFer Tommy John! Larry also included a little note reminding me that we've been doing this cardboard swapping since 1991!
