It contained theproceeds of the auction arranged by Superstar Aaron Shirley. I don't know how to adequately thank everyone. But I will try. I will try to thank people in person, via payback, and via support for future good works. So far I am generally doing well. I returned to work in the middle of lastweek. The days are long and I have a ton of stuff to catch up on but it feels good to have some sort of routine again. I am deep into grief counseling. One via Employee Assistance Program, one via a church and a therapist I previously knew. I have a huge hole in my life with my wife gone. But I learned that people heal by expanding existing relationship and developing new ones. People at work and at the church we joined are actively taking care of me. And I am trying to actively take care of myself. I can think of only a couple of days or evenings that I stayed by myself. This week I will have dinner with a friend on Tuesday, see Young Frankenstein at the movies on Wednesday, and have two hours of grief counseling on Thursday. Friday is unplanned but Saturday, two of my cousins will travel here from NJ/MD to hang outwith me leading up to the memorial service next Tuesday. Still plenty of holes to plug. I am way behind on papers and thank you notes. I am eating too much frozen pizza. I am drinking often but not heavily. No effects on staying up too late or waking up for work. I hope to dive back into cards but haven't felt like it. My dupes and my Houston purchases are still in Houston. With time I hope to become an activeOBCer again. I need to lean on those within driving distance for help. And I really want to travel. My hope is the first trip will be to the Wilmington show in November. I'd love to move up North but it is too soon to think about things like that. Thank you all for reading. Thank you for the greeting cards (Galbreath, Pelletier) and the sports cards (Sankner). People are welcome to email me, call (256-585-4329) or even visit. You won't find card shops or shows here but I do have a well stocked dupes box (once it returns from Houston). The service was very nice. The minister talked about what my stepdaughter and I had told her. Some friends of Gina's talked about her as well. Afterwards, there was a long line of people to greet me. I didn't recognize him at first because I've never seen him in a suit. And then it hit me. Nick Pelletier showed up. Sounds wonderful for an OBCer to pay his respects, right? Well, Nick lives in Minnesota and I live in Alabama. Nick lives ONE THOUSAND MILES away and he drove here for the service. I am still blown away. The first thing I said was "Holy sh t!" Plenty of days I don't want to drive 5 minutes out of my way to the grocery store. But Nick drove 16 HOURS each way. I cannot stop telling people about this. I feel incredibly isolated from OBC here. I haven't made the effort to meet Jay Tysver in Birmingham (90 minutes away). I've only met John Harrell in Montgomery (3 hours away) once. It was very special when I was in Houston to be in the same town as Nate Mack though I didn't want to impose on his free time or his time with his girlfriend. And I've lost touch with a local guy, Tom Coleman, who has the OBC spirit but not the time to join. I'm rambling here to let you know how special it is for me to see anyone in OBC. Nick is just the second OBCer to come to my house. Kent Goto came through town years ago and on his way to Florida and visited for a bit. I convinced Nick to stay over at my house which was even better for me. The evening was like the National and the swap for me. We had pizza. I showed him some of my Red Sox stuff. And I even got to unload some cards on him. He wanted to pay me back but I told him multiple times that if he takes the cards, he saves me the money I'd spend when I (theoretically) send them. (We all know I can't get off my fat ____ to mail cards but the theory still holds.) I told Nick that I will try to use his example to inspire me to do more for others. I still have guilt over not attending the funerals of an aunt and uncle several years ago. But now I hope I understand the power of just showing up for someone else. Wow. I just don't know how to thank Nick enough for the gift of coming all the way here. I don't have the stamina for very long drives any more. I can do the drive but I have a hip that starts hurting and doesn't stop until I get out of the car. And the drive wipes me out. But now I will try harder to travel more, maybe by plane if I cannot drive. And I will try very hard to do whatever I can for others in need. Thank you Nick. I will always remember your incredible gift of coming out here. Labs for a great 9-pack of '68 Topps baseball, the final year of my childhood collecting. The highlight for me is the rookie card of Billy Rohr, which induced flashbacks of this 10-year old listening/watching (at this point, I'm not sure) his near no-hitter in '67 vs. the Yankees, with Yaz's tremendous left field catch and Elston Howard's perfecto-ruining single. It included 11 OBC packages over a couple of weeks! MIKE GLASSER started things off with a lucky seven pack of 1955 Bowmans. It included Eddy Fitzgerald, a catcher for the Senators, who in 1951 caught a no-hitter for my Pirates. He started his career after serving in the European theater in WWII. I don't think he is related to Edmund Fitzgerald, of Gordon Lightfoot fame (or infamy). TJ VALACAK provides a 1965 Topps card of Mike McCormick, who won the Cy Young award in 1967, right before the mound was raised in the year of the pitcher. TJ sent a lot of football cards to be documented elsewhere. GENO WAGNER sent two packages including five high numbers from 1970 Topps, including Orlando Cepeda, Sam McDowell, and Jim Lonborg, and a pair of 1972 high numbers. DAN ANGLAND delivered a 1966 Philadelphia Gum football card of Mike Pyle, along with three stars from the 1979-80 Topps hockey set: Wayne Cashman, Peter McNab, and Mike Bossy. I love those blue borders. STEVE SANKNER and KEN GOETSCH each sent a nice package but nothing to detail MARK ZENTKOVICH floors me with a near mint 1969 Brian (misspelled Bryon) Piccolo. I remember seeing "Brian's song" when I was in high school, a very cool movie I assume all of you have seen about Mr. Piccolo's short battle with cancer. I'm going to watch the movie with my 10 year old son - if not this weekend, then the following. MAC WUBBEN delivers the Babe - the "Ruth Hits 60" card from the 1962 set. Included in Mac's envelope were high number hits from 1968 and 1972. NATE MACK reduces my 1962 Topps baseball wantlist by another 17 cards, including Richie Ashburn and Dick Groat. He also throws in a tough high number from the 1967 set in the name of Galen Cisco. BRIAN BETZA makes my day with a good representation of Pirates among the bounty. Included were three hits to my 1957 set, including Dale Long; four hits to my 1965 set, including three high numbers and Bill Mazeroski as well as Vern Law; and a pair of 1970 high numbers. Whew, glad to be caught up on thanks, but still a lot of card sorting. I hope everyone has a good weekend. I have no idea what that may have cost Sal and why he chose me to be the recipient. It is incredible to get so difficult a card in such great condition. It is really nice-looking and it has the normal yellowing that you'd expect from a 106 year-old card. Just incredible. Now I'll have to start collecting the rest of the cards in the set which can't be that difficult since I already now have the hardest card. Oh, I just noticed. It says "reprint" on the back. Well, it is still a great card. I'll put some tape over the "reprint" and throw it in some tea to see if I can improve its believability. Thanks for making my day, Sal. It's UV, but it bears mentioning for those who might only be reading over here. Thanks, Dan! BOB D'ANGELO sent a big box of newer stuff (from the many products he has reviewed). A *LOT* of stuff he could have easily sold. I have always been a Topps collector, but haven't really bought much new product (besides a few base set packs) since before joining OBC. So getting to see a lot of Topps'recent efforts in person is pretty neat, regardless of all your shaming looks. Haha! And again, it's UV but it should be mentioned here simply for the sheer quantity and quality of what he sent. Incredibly generous, Bob. Thanks! CHRIS TRIPLER has my address "on speed dial" again. He sent another packagewith a stack of mostly oversized UV stuff. The fantastic vintage portion was a 1966 Topps 467 Vic Roznovsky and 1967 Topps Cardinal Dave Ricketts! I got my end of the trade today in the form of a trio of 1975 Twinkies and about a dozen more Twinkies from 1977. THANKS ANT!!  Now I haven't posted a list for either set as of yet because I'm trying to finish the 1975 set first. I've finished the 1977 set, but the Twinkie cards I've stashed in the binder have small type on the back with a long black bar. The ones Ant sent have the normal size type and a very short black bar. (A lot of cards in my set might be Twinkies that are trimmed enough that there's no bar, but they have the typical stain that a Twinkie card would have.) In other words, I'll need to do a little more research to figure out which ones I have and figure out if I need the Hostess or Twinkie card for my set. I know that certain numbers were issued with either Twinkies or Cupcakes, but that doesn't explain the large and small type. Are there TWINKIE VARIATIONS?!?! Do I need cards wit h large AND small type in the 1977 set? There's 150 cards in the 1977 Twinkie set. What kind of insanity is that?  I'm pretty far along on the 60-card 1975 Twinkie set, but I'd have to add a few big names back on my Hostess list. The Ryan and Yount I have are both Twinkies. In fact, I have most of the higher skip numbered cards in the set and need a lot of the first 36 (numbered 1-36). I was thinking about adding the 1976 Twinkies to my list, but I have zero out of sixty and don't recall ever seeing any anywhere or at any time. I need a moment to reflect on some of my decisions.
