At the National, Mac was able to secure for me a 1910 T210-6 Mullin (actually Charlie Mullen). As many of you know, I collect cards for major league players born in the state of Washington - Charlie was born in Seattle in 1889. This is the last vintage player that I didn't have a card for (except those who have none, of course). Because of the name misspelling, I was not even aware the card existed until about 3 years ago. I have been hunting the card tirelessly ever since. eBay has not had one since I've been looking, I check every auction house, google frequently, check the Net54 B/S/T board 3-4 time a day, etc. Two or three years ago there was one sold at auction just before I started my quest. The auction winner flipped it on the Net54 buy/sell/trade board and someone beat me to it. Since then, not a sniff of another one until Mac emails me that he has secured a copy for me at the National. I cannot begin to describe how happy I am at the moment. To put it into Pacific Northwest terms, I'm happier than a clam at high tide! Thanks Mac! Truly OBC is great, and Mac one of the greatest. Above and beyond Mac! More on him later. I had planned to attend for more then just one day, but due to my job of zig-zagging across the country as I am now with the compliance team doing audits or filling in at open positions as director of medical equipment at hospitals, I only managed to fly in from North Carolina on Friday night. So with my unorganized dupes box, and not fully participating this year due to the job change my wantlist was just as unorganized, I did finally make a plan for the show on Saturday morning while driving down to try and knock off my remaining 1970's football lists. I get there and was meeting Aaron Shirley for my new shirt, (great looking), and throughout the morning was "handshake greeted" by Aaron, Sal Domino, Gary Mandell, Steve Rittenberg, Wes Shepard, Kent Goto, Larry Tipton, Taylor Schock, Joel Freedman, Mike Mackie. I also received the envelopes via members from TJ Valacak, and Jason Christopherson. Then at the swap even more from Matt Glidden Mark Talbot,Geordie Calvert, Kevin Martens, and Mac Wubben. I think Richard Dingman, Ray Luurs and a few more chipped in to my haul as well. (Sorry I was exhausted by that time of the day and I know there was at least one other).. I managed during the show to knock off 5 football sets, the OBC team made sure I knocked off my 1971 Scratch Off set, and I debated the entire day of adding a hockey set, but did not get to that at all. I have 2 cards left to wipe 1970's football off my lists entirely. Reminder to self is don't leave the swap while Mark Talbot is running his little auction... As I am away for a few minutes, I inherited a few Cleveland Indian oddballs that I will pass on to my brother, and a few cards of players and coaches in smoking advertisement cards. (How am I going to classify that on my wantlist and where do I find the checklist??) Joe is now starting a 1980 baseball set, a 1975 mini topps set, I think he also picked up a starter set of the 69-70 basketball, and will add a 1970 Football set as well. Eventually he will apply to OBC as he gets a site up. It was great to talk to Spike about his type set as he showed off a Cuban card, and a Venezuelan he had picked up, sharing dinner and stories with all the other attendees. Definitely the entire day was a needed jolt to keep me going throughout my job changes and now my wantlist changes. It is likely I willmist something or get something wrong, but I believe this is the best notes I have taken for National thanks in my dozen or so Nationals since joining OBC. First of all, I got in late Wednesday afternoon. As was reported 7or so guys got together Tuesday nite, and came up with a devious plan to hit my list. They had found 1980 & 1981 Berensen's Hartford jai Alai sets of 8. Each one, plus Richard Dingman took 1 from each set, and included them in handshakes to gang up to try and start and complete these sets for me.The sets were completed, but the funniest part is that I already had the 1981 set. I also bought the1979 set at the show, so that I now have a run of 1979 - 1983 Hartford Jai Alai cards, which should surprise no one. Taylor Shock handed over Jai Alai and 7 1972 Milton Bradley cards. Geor ge hits me with an Exhibit card of Joe Page. Nick - Jai Alai and a Carvel BSKB disc. On Sunday he bought me a M-102 Sporting News Marquard from Jerry Nelson's table. Kent - Jai Alai and a 1949 Bowman BB NNOF Mize. Guru - Jai Alai and a T206 Kruger in a PSA holder. Spike - starts me on a new set with a pair of 1964-7 Sport Hobbyist Famous Card Series. Later in the show I picked up a stack of 1971 Sport Hobbyist Famous Card Series T-206. So I started 2 sets, issued out of Detroit, thatI was not aware of before this weekend. Mac - 75 Twinkie upgrade of McCovey, still leaving me Buddy Bell to complete the set that I never found all weekend. He also gave me a T-206 Lajoie portrait, a pair of Laughlin Diamond Jubilee cards (may be my first?) and SCP from 6 different MSA Disc sets. Sal- Jai Alai and of course the OBC pack of cards. Also some 63 Topps Stickons. Rittenberg - He had called me before my arrival as he was bird-dogging stuff for me (as well as every other OBCer) before I even got to the show. He found a pair of 1949 Leaf BB shortprints for me to purchase. Other items from Steve included Jai Alai, UV TCMA cards, vintage postcard size TCMA cards, Bazooka FB panel, 1972 Kellogg's ATG 3 card panel set, missing only panel 13-5, Salutation Exhibits, pair of 1961 Nu Card Hi Lites, a pair of trimmed to the size of Bowmans 1952 Berk Ross, a Cope Boxer, a pair of Philadelphia Scrappers, and some BB HOF Exhibit cards! Richard Dingman - Jai Alai and a 195 Bowman BB with copyright variation. Talbot - Mark and I see each other more than any other OBCer and always give each other handshakes. This was no different as he handed over a TCMA Indianapolis Clowns, T212-2 1911 Obak (my 2nd to get me to collect this set),a pair of 1976 Sugar Daddy Series 1 cards, and 22 TCMA ATG postcards, including the DiMaggio/Mantle card. Morganti - Ken saved me a bunch of money by booking a great rate and sharing a room for 4 nites. A tough job, but I knew he would step up to it! Also Jai Alai cards, 4 Red man w/o tabs from his purchase and while may not bethe most valuable handshake, may have been my fav with 3 1965-66 Topps USAHCKY test issue cards! Gary Mandell - a 1967 Reds Coke (OK is was actually a Fresca) cap of Johnson and then later in the show a 1948 Topps magic photo #A2 Sullivan. Wes - delivered some Kahn's BSKB & BB he bird-dogged for me a couple monthsago (ends up being a complete set of 1965-66 BSKB, plus dupes and BB, etc.), a 1969 Atlantic Oil #2 Kaline and at the swap a 1955 Bowman BB wrapper! Dave Hornish brought a box to Mother Hubbard's restaurant and hits me with a Fury! That is a North American Soccer League sticker of the Fury (team name). Of course Steve game me a bunch of these at the swap, to get me to collect this UV s et. Jason Christopherson - a box of 2002 era Post Bobbleheads. I need a checklist for these. Gersh - 1953 Red Man May w/o tab Ashburn and what we thought was a set killer 1962 Topps stamp of Virdon. Turns out I need the 1961 Virdon. Thanks so much for looking. Mike Mackie - a 1963 Topps stickon. Joel Freedman - 1977 Topps Glossy Hockey * variations. and a W512 Firpo Kevin martens - 1963 Topps BB Aaron Shirley - delivers the new OBC shirt and some MSA discs. Mark Z - 1963 Topps BB Spike - 2 SCFC cards (sets I want to learn more about) and a Seattle Bulletin reprint. I picked up a 2nd of that at Chandy's table and also found some SCFC cards at the show. TJ- this year's most missed OBCer sends a Denny's Hologram card and a 1950 Bowman BB Durocher w/o copyright variation. Big hit. My notes do not indicate what Ray Luurs gave me (sorry Ray and anyone else I missed. P lease remind me so I may give proper thanks). I also spoke to Carl Mura who made an appearance. I still have not met Mark Macrae, which I wanted to do. Still need to send a show ramble and update my lists. Tired like the others. Thanks (from a former OBCer) to everyone I saw at the National! Wes Shepherd contributed a couple of hits to the 1952 Topps set! Mark Talbot (as auctioneer) provided a well-worn hit to the 1959 Ted Williams Fleer set! Ken Morganti pulled off a nice sneak attack. When talking at Kurt Tourdot's table, Ken crossed off one of three cards I need for the 1961 Topps set (Bob Cerv). I didn't realize he did this, and so later, at another table, I told a deaelr I was looking for the Cerv card. I was very surprised whenI saw that it had been checked off the list, since I didn't remember buying it. A senior moment? The issue was resolved when Ken presented the card at the swap session! Steve Rittenberg provided a few schedules from various teams. Another neat item was a postcard-sized photo of the 1957 Mantle/Aaron slugger card--itwill take a place of honor in my Milwaukee Braves binder. Sorry but I don't remember who gave it to me, as things were flying fast and furious. And thanks to everyone at the swap meet for the camaraderie and stories. I attended Friday and Saturday, commuting from Milwaukee both days. As usual I arrived at National with a bigger wantlist than budget. As is my usual practice, my purchases were dictated by what I encountered at dealer tables than any predetermined "must purchase". My lone "must find" was the final card in my 1962 Topps set, the shortprint Bob Gibson. Early Friday afternoon I met up with Nick Pelletier and conveyed this to him. He got that certain look in his eye and then was gone. It wasn't thatmuch later that Nick returned with Mr. Gibson in tow. Set killed! And a perfect example what is great about OBC. Thanks Nick! On Friday I arrived a bit after noon and immediately contacted Sal Domino. The day was spent largely between Mike McRae and Kurt Tourdot's tables as well as general scouting. Bargain bins were scoured not only foritems from my wantlist but also for replenishing my dupes box. The focus was post-war baseball (various sets) and football (1974 and 1975 Topps). Friday after the show a bunch of us went to an Irish pub/restaurant across the street to grab a pint and a beer or two. Saturday I was accompanied to the show by OBC-emeritus Mike Wierzbicki and my VCT memeber Steve Etzel. On day two my focus shifted to prewar in between continued search for football. Stopped off again at Kurt and Mike's tables as well as a visit to Uncle Dick's. As the day ended and the wallet was on fumes I spent my last hour or so looking thru 10 cent hockey cards for Pittsburgh Penguins and players from other teams whom I like. In the end, my highlights were finishing off the 1962 Topps baseball set, 30 or so from 1951 Bowman, knocking the 1975 Football set down fromaround 40 to 7, picking up about a quarter of the 1974 Football set, 20 orso 1971-72 Topps Hockey cards, and a dozen or so prewar cards from the T206, T205, T218, W572, '33 Goudey, Diamond Stars, 1940-41 Playball, and 1941 Doubleplay The weekend ended in grand fashion at the annual OBC swap where socializing, cardboard swapping, and the Mark Talbot-led auction took us well into theevening. As always the swap was the highlight of the experience. I feel fortunate to belong to such a fine group of guys and fellow cardboardians as Mr. Talbot would say. That's what I did the past couple days, with an incredible OBCvisit to Rick Lyons on Whidbey Island!!

Rick and his darling wife Roni hosted my impromptu vacation as I had a few days off and very hot 100 degrees weather here in SW WA last week.
Now let me tell you....even though it's less than 200 miles, it's not simple to get to.
I wanted to drive along the water (Hood Canal) rather than the highway (I-5) to slow the pace and maybe eat a few oysters along the way.

Arriving in Port Townsend on Friday afternoon, I was a short ferry ride but long ferry line away, and I contacted Rick about our potential visit. I heard Roni in the background exclaim"You'd better be ready to eat some crab!"
Oh yes, says I. Wewere all set for Saturday!

Finally getting to the Island Paradise ,they have an incredible beach home, directly on the Puget Sound with the proverbial views "to die for".
I liked it so much I stayed two days:-)
I was treated like royalty and I just cannot thank them enough for the food, the company and the hospitality! I got to meet Roni's sister Randi too.

Note that Rick's son is named Ross and that's a lot of R&R , LOL!

I learned Mexican Train Dominoes, I learned how to pull crab potsand watched how to clean the catch (nothing deadly here except to the waistline). I mostly watched Rick working really hard on relaxing...he's a milea minute tending to everything. And then we ate crab until we tired of cracking them (it's impossible to get "full" of fresh crab)

We stayed up late talking and visiting about life, cards, more cards, more life and had a most excellent time!

We even snuck in a breakfast visit with CoffeeDude Diamanti !
Mike is always entertaining, and a joy to be with aswell.
Thanks for the bag of Meteora, Mikeeeeee...it's fueling this IPADtyping :-)

I think I ate more crab these past couple days than I ever had before ...they just kept coming.
And since the hosts were so cordial,  I will try to keep *going* to Whidbey!
THANK YOU RICK!!

Some crafty detective work led me to a suspect.
Trained over the years by our trusty crime fighter Grant, I looked in the top left corner of the envelope.  Awwww...there is a possible clue!

Mac Wubben was the name, and the 1958 Topps set is done, Kaput! Killed!
Now many other OBC dudes have helped over the years, so I must say thanks to all...although today's official slaying by Mac really needs tobe recognized!
Ken Boyer and the Brave Sluggers (featuring Hank &Eddie) were the last two holdouts!

Mac also included an amazing 1960 Jim Brown FB card that will brighten my friend Marv's day as his wife battles the C word. (The last I spoke with him, she's doing just ok)

Incredible OBC HOF move, Mac!

Looking for a return, but mine may pale in comparison,

I listed which ones from his waiver wire that were on my wantlist thinking that Doug would be able to send a few. This is awesome. Doug included a 55B, 2-60Ts, a 63T & 6 61 Posts. Plus he threw in one of those early Classic cards of Eddie Murray. I have seen Eddie Murray the past few years at the local Willie Stargell charity event run by his wife. Willie retired here and died of kidney failure several years ago. His wife runs an event where former players come in, play golf, sign autographs and raise money for a good cause. Not all of the former ball players are nice though. Joe Morgan comes to mind but Eddie Murray is absolutely the worst. Last year we had a signing at Dick's Sporting Goods. I was 2 people away from getting Murray with time running out. Everybody else was still signing until all the fans got their things signed. But Murray jumps up and says he is going to the car to get something and will be right back. The gentlemen in front of me believed Eddie and patiently waited until the one of the staffers came and announced that Murray was done for the day. We saw Eddie Murray out front still waiting when we left but he laughed and said no when we asked him to sign a card. What a jerk. He lied to the guy and then stood out front for all to see. He should have just said that I am done for the day and excused himself. What a classless act. The previous year he asked my wife who she was working for when she got a card signed for me. Guess he thinks we are all retiring off his one signed card. Thanks for allowing me to claim these Doug. I finished a few sets and hit on 6 of 8 goals. 1 ) N2 (A&G American Indian Chiefs) Red Cloud - A BIG thanks to Mr Rittenberg on this one, who felt guilty for not speaking up sooner when I picked upone way above my average set condition and he mentioned another dealer in NS cards might have one, which he did and bought FOR me. Please feel free to help Spike out on his new quest of #5 jersey cards. ;) Hey, what are roommates for? Handshake thankseses, in no particular order, and hopefully reasonably accurate. Larry Tipton - a sweet looking T206 Schmidt. I guess he has too many of these. Nick Pelletier - a nice 3-pack of '57 Topps FB Cleveland Browns cards. Kent Goto - an SCP '52 Topps of NY Giants great Monford Irvin. Sal Domino - a tough Conlon color of Babe Ruth for that insert set and a pack of OBC cards that contain some of the OBC greats of the collecting world(along with a stick of gum). Wes Sheppard - a Lou Brock collection hit with a '65 Topps. Ron Perry - a pair of Redmans with a '54 Gilliam and a '55 Piersall. Jason Cristopherson - a '63 Exhibit stat back Leon Wagner. Mike Mackie - some welcome '63 Topps upgrades. (my only '63 Topps show hits?) Kevin Martens - a great '64 Topps Nelson Mathews upgrade. Mark Zentkovich - for 3 different '67 FB hits, a Ripken, and a pair of Brocks. Larry Gersbach - a nice '54 Topps upgrade of Alex Grammas. Ken Morganti(?) - a half dozen Redman hits at the swap. TJ Valacak - for a real trooper handshake of 4 skeds, a Kelloggs Walter Johnson, and a '55 Bowman Ray Wietecha. We missed you at the show, TJ. But more important, GET WELL SOON! If I missed anyone, PLEASE let me know. The real interesting thing about the above, and as it relates to other items I picked up at the show? While I ended up with 3 different Rick Casares cards, I don't think I got ANY dupes? I know there were no dupes in the handshakes, and I don't think anything above was duped by anything I bought at the show. That is amazing! All in all, I 'think' I finished 7 sets (to be verified) but I KNOW I only started one new one (to be named later). Time to start digging through cards, putting them away, and updating my now smaller want lists! ================= Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2015 15:56:38 -0600 To: OBC-Thanks Subject: Thanks to MEAD and HUTCHINSON From: Marshall West PETER MEAD sends MARSHALL WEST (me) 2 high number =E2=9967=E2=99s. It included 5 hits to my Hostess lists including Lyle, Schmidt and Winfield. THANKS TJ!! and feel better soon if you don't already! KEVIN MARTENS included me in his one-day National tour with a logic defying low number hit (Tom Morgan? How was he still on the list?) to my 1960 Topps set and an SCP strike to my 1976 Hostess set. THANKS KEVIN!! MIKE MACKIE added one card each to my 1975, 1976 and 1977 Hostess sets including an inaugural season Mariner Dan Meyer. I don't know why this card looks so familiar. I may have cut it out of the box when I was a kid and traded it away to OBC long before I started the set. I'm sure this copy is better than the one I sent out, as it looks like it was cut by someone older than ten like I was at the time. THANKS MIKE!! TAYLOR SHOCK does just that with a trio of HOF'er hits to the Hostess collections: Munson, Winfield and Perez. THANKS TAYLOR!! MARK ZENTKOVICH found a Dick Groat for the 1960 set in his dupes box, then added a pair of 1977 Burger King Yankees to my envelope. I think the '77 set was the only one that sustained any damage on my BK list that didn't get killed outright. THANKS MARK!! Unfortunately, I didn't run into JASON CHRISTOPHERSON at the show, but I did get a Singleton hit to my 1976 Hostess set from him - Ken Singleton that is. THANKS JASON!! Last, but not least is the entry from JOEL FREEDMAN. He adds a bunch of cards to the recently started 1971 Fleer World Series set, He also found hits to a list I didn't realize was on my page - they're serial numbered and have a gold shine to them, but appreciated all the same. That set hasn't seen any action in probably a decade. THANKS JOEL!! Hopefully that catches me up on the show thanks. I just remembered a couple envelopes that arrived in a more traditional manner today, both from OBC'ers who were at the National and gave me a handshake. They also grabbed a card or two from my recent DS offering. THANKS JASON and MARK TALBOT!! Mark also took the opportunity to hit my Hostess list yet again with a half dozen more for the 1976 set. Today's pheatured  an unexpected large puffy from Richard Labs containing my Phavorite Team.
If you hadn't already known which team I cheer for, that's your clue!
The word "packs" in the title of this thank you note is because Richard included a 1961 Jay's Publishing Team Photo pack of my Phavorite team. I love the black and white photos( I almost hesitated to open the pack, since it has been sealed all these years...but I wanted to see which ones were beyond Gene Mauch LOL!)
Thatwasn't it, there was another stack (pack) of Phavorites from 20 years later. Phull color models with Pete Rose, Steve Carlton and the greatest third baseman in MLB history!
Technically encroaching the UV era, but these will be put in the team binder proudly!

Thank you so much, Richard, nice job!
