I didn't get there until after 12 on Saturday, as I have some responsibilities for a basketball league I run. Walked in and almost immediately ran into the entire OBC contingent. The introductions and handshakes came fast and furious. I had met Taylor before, and Larry and I go WAY back(although this is the first time I have seen him this century). Mac, Mark and Ant were new OBCers for me to meet. Now, here is where it gets very difficult, trying to remember who gave me what. I pretty certain that is was Ant who handed me 3 great 1970 Supers--Phil Niekro on top, Andy Messersmith(I never knew his first name was John) in back, and cleverly hidden in between, none other than the Say Hey Kid himeself!! After that, it's all a blur. The only thing remember for certain was that Larry included the early mentioned hole punched 1962 hi number rookie parade with Bo Belinsky and Jim Bouton. If I try to list who handed me what after that, I'm sure I will mess up, so, I won't try. But I will list the haul: Great looking 48 Bowman of Willard Marshall who puts most of my 48 Bowman set to shame A 52 Ray Coleman, who, unlike many of my 52's, has the white borders One of the remaining much needed 53 high numbers--Carlos Rodriguez A razor sharp 56 Harry Dorish A 57 tough series of my favorite manager--Gene Mauch 3 cards on my dwindling 1966 list--including a NL RH leader (Mays, McCovey,Williams) and a high number rookie stars of the A's featuring future Phillie Ron Stone 2 75 Hostess , including Brooks Robinson And last, but certainly not least, a 54 Bowman of one Edward Ford, better known as Whitey!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. As for the show itself, I get to meet Kurt, who is wisely moving form Minn.to Raleigh, so I'm sure we will become well acquainted, picked up some great hits, including a miscut 56 Duke Snider for $5, as well as finally deciding to start on the 51 Red Backs. Couldn't pass up a chance to pick up 18 of them, including Monte Irvin and Early Wynn, for $30. I already have the blue back set, so now I will finally work on it's brother. As for the non-card part--that is always the best part of meeting other OBCers. Had a great time chatting at the show, and then, as already related, at Red Robin afterwards. Mark, sorry I couldn't get there sooner and have a better chance to get to know you. I'm sure another opportunity will present itself soon. I look forward to it. And, the best part was that this meeting didn't panic my wife, Barbara. A couple of years ago, when we (along with my daughter Elena) were going up toPort Elgin, Ontario to help run a Vacation Bible School for a week, we stopped over in Detroit. Met up with Mike Rich, Mark Talbot and, I think (I'm getting older), Mike Mroz. Mike Rich had tickets for the Tigers game, and after that we went to Denny's. My wife and Elena stayed at the hotel and rested. To make a long story short, it was going for 3:00 AM when I got back (you know how OBCers can talk). Since this was Detroit, my wife had though the worst, and that I was lying dead somewhere. And, showing her love for me, she said all she could think of was---no, not, "Oh, no, he's dead". but "Oh no, I have to drive all the way back to Raleigh myself!" Once again, thank you all for coming, and especially Larry for putting it together! ================= Date: Sun, 1 Feb 2015 20:30:14 +0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Large mini thanks to Mike Mroz! Included among the stuff I immediately threw on the floor was a puffy from James Moleta. My friends, I must warn you. I think James has some kind of short term memory loss. You see, he proposed a trade to me for what I THOUGHT was a simple one for one high number swap. I found one on his list, but before I could send it, along comes a puffy from him with the high number on my list and about 70 other hits to my 1960 Topps set. Now James must've forgotten about sending them, because when I sent my return fire for that, he went back to his dupes box and sent me 20 MORE hits to the 1960 set including Ford, Aparicio, Sparky Anderson and Hodges WS cards. But that's not all folks. Add in a SP 54B FB and over a dozen Hostess cards PLUS four solid strikes to the 1963 Jello set - the first numbers I've crossed off that list in a long time (since I started it I think). Now, even though I'm horribly behind on my end of this 'trade', I'm hesitant to look for anything else on James' list because he's probably already forgotten about sending this package. Hopefully this note will remind him. THANKS JAMES!! TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2015 11:42:21 -0500 To: VCT , Subject: Jay sends a few! Thank you Guru! A Stan Hack with no return address and a self created postage with no insight as to city or state, sent a 55 Bowman, three 58s, and nine 62s includingthe Phillies TC and a hi number. Thanks Stan where ever you are! John Scott Gray sent 14 great hockey hits from the 77/78 set, and a pair oftough mid series 57 Topps. Thank you JSG! Mike Mroz added another fifteen hits to the 77/78 hockey set all in great shape. Thanks Mike!! Stan also sent some cards from Schwenksville, PA- two 58s, including the Tigers TC, a 62 Topps of the WS champs celebrating, a pair of 63s and a 55 Topps. Thanks Stan! Stan then send another envelope from Schaumburg IL - a 72 topps hi Gene Michael In Action, and a 82 Kellogg's Dave McNally. I don't get to hit those lists very often- thanks Stan! Richard Dingman sent a great trio of one 71 Topps, one 66, and the Cards TCfrom the 57 Topps set! Thank you Richard! Joel Freedman sent a trio of 55 Bowman hits! Thanks Joel! To top off Friday, Stan sent some cards from an address in Chicago I could find in our directory (but I have my suspicions) that was an absolute HOF special. The 57 Red Schoendist, the 66 Topps Eddie Mathews, the 71 AND the 64 Clementes! The 64 Clemente looks like it came right out of the pack. Thank you Stan!! Today there was a package from Jason Christopherspn- three 58s, and four 55Bowmans including one of those cool umpire cards! Thanks Jason! Finally, Stan sends an envelope from Ridgefield WA - a 55 Topps "Red" Cress, and a gorgeous 56 Topps of Billy Martin. Thanks Stan! OBC, I am overwhelmed, and so appreciative of all the cards and well wishes! You guys are the best. Thank you Stan Hacks everywhere! (Although over six feet in the last three weeks is making some very big piles.) The overdue thanks are starting to pile up on my desk as well. In between snow storms, the mail deliverer has managed to bring six envelopes to my door. In no particular order: JAY TYSVER, "Da Noo Guy" finds a pair of '79 Hostess cards for my binder. It's weird that the most recent of the Hostess sets seems to be the one I have the least accumulation (see what I did there?) THANKS JAY!! The next envelope is from PETER MEAD, who sends over a blizzard (groan) of hits to my Hostess sets. This reminds me that I really need to dig a path over to the post office and send him those cards I promised him last week (or was that two weeks ago?) There's quite a few Red Sox in here. THANKS The next one on the pile is from PETER MEAD again! Both envelopes arrived on the same day. Peter "storms" my Hostess lists some more including a Yaz and Palmer. THANKS (again) PETER!! LARRY TIPTON breaks the string of Hostess hits with a waiver wire claim that I'm thrilled to own. This is a SBP (shoveling break pleasure) in the form of a 1960 Topps Mantle/Boyer with just the right amount of tape on the back. THANKS GURU!! JOHN SCOTT GRAY gets back on track with a 'flurry' of hits to the Hostess sets. Included are a half dozen hits to the '75 set and a single strike to the '78 set. THANKS JSG!! Finally, ANTHONY ARBEENY shovels over another waiver wire claim. This is a '79 Topps comic of George Brett. Somehow this set escaped my collecting eye when I was a kid. In fact, I don't think I've ever noticed them until I bought a shoe box a couple months ago that had a bunch of them in it. This is the first hit to that set. THANKS ANT!! Well, time to clear the steps again, so the mail can be delivered tomorrow. More snow expected Tuesday. From: Doug Ok - I will preface this by saying I will not adequately express my thanks, joy, appreciation, or gratitude in this post by I shall humbly do my best. The day started with me feeling pretty good about having made a small starton saying "thanks" for last week's Stan Hack attack i had received. Whilewatching the Jayhawks sleep walk through their game last night I managed to get a few envelopes together for OBCers. Then Stan Hack was ballistic. I came home to two envelopes and a box. Allfrom Stan Hack. I opened the first, smaller envelope. A small group of cards in a single top loader. The ends showed a 61 Frank Robinson AS, the tough high series, and a Marichal. Is the 61 Marichal his RC? Nah, can't be. Yes, it is. Ok, that makes for a GREAT day at the mail box all by itself. A GREAT day just with those two. As I pulled them out I found two cards in between these. I first recognize a 62 Topps AS - - - is that really the Mantle? Yes, it is the Mantle AS card! That is amazing. My mind is spinning trying to take it on while my eyeballs roam to the next card. A 59 Topps. No way. No way. It is the regular issue 59 Mantle. No way! Those four cards right there are amazing. Just amazing. Then I opened the second envelope. A note saying that this should knock off the set----and inside the last six remaining 1954 Bowmans!! Stan Hack kills it. Numerous times I tried to pick up the Pee Wee Reese and would get stymied by eBay snipers each time. And here it is, along with the other five. I don't recall when I decide to start that set but once upon a time I never would have dreamt I would finish a set that old and now it is done. Just Now there is a box staring at me. Not a puffy. A box. Here goes. Two stacks of cards, wrapped separately. The for stack had forty 1966 Topps. Some cool ones. Marichal. TCs. A Jose Tartabull with " Poo is fast" written on the front. Great cards. I spent some time thumbing through them. Love the Twins Uhlaender RC. One more stack to unwrap. Some loose cards. Some in top loaders. Some stacked in top loaders. A stack of Kellogg's - 4 72s including Jim Hunter, 375s. That might come darn close to finish all the Kellogg's cards I had left for the seventies. Close. A 56 White Sox TC. A gorgeous 55 Stan Hackhimself! Then it goes nuts. A 61 Frank Robinson. 63 Cepeda. 61 Kaline.66 Yaz. 61 Musial. 61 Aparicio. This is crazy! 63 Billy Williams. 61Drysdale. Seriously? There's more? 63 Clemente. Yes, a tough hi numberClemente. Three 55 Bowmans in a top loader. A beautiful Rizzuto on top!!Beautiful. A Campanella on the other end!!! What is between. No way. A beautiful, still has the gloss, gorgeous 55 Bowman Mantle. I almost cannot move. I cannot speak. I look everywhere for the word "reprint" but itisn't there. This is just too amazing. Not lastly, but somewhere in there was one more special card. The RC of my boyhood hero, the 1955 Killebrew. Stan, thank you so much. OBC, I am so grateful. This is amazing. I had a blast and now have a little bit of free time as we had been rehearsing 2 -3 days a week for quite some timenow. Add my couple week trip to Florida and I have become woefully behind on thanking some very generous and now patient fellow traders. So my apologies for the late acknowledgements to the following: Brian Betza connects with a SCP from the seldom hit `59 Topps Football set with Packers Max McGee leaving only Unitas and Starr remaining. The end is in sight =E2=93 Thanks Brian!!! Andy Cook allows me to claim a waiver wire issue with a couple `67 Donruss Monkees cards, a Topps James Bond card and a `72-73 OPC Hockey card of Jacques Plante. How cool is that =E2=93 Thanks Andy!!! John Scott Gray helps out with a SCP from the `33-35 Diamond Star set with a Bill Hallahan card. Mike Mackie knows how much I enjoy the =E2=9Coddball=E2=9D issues andhe finds a pair of `62 Salada coins to send my way. Frank Malzone and Chuck Cottier are now knocked off the list. Thanks Mike!!! This card is SO far ahead of my other 63/64 Parkies that its embarrassing. That wasn't the only gem though. Brian also takes aim at my pre-war Tigers list with a T205 Ed Willitt. Wow!! Also along for the ride (possibly offering some "care in the community" for those elderly cards) was a selection of newer Tigers. Marshall West - Using the old Mike Rich adage, "if you have two you're collecting the set", Marshall starts me off with my first two 1962 CFL Post cards, a pair of Toronto Argonauts. the Argos featured in the only CFL game I've ever attended in my life. Matt Yudt hits Glasgow with an envelope that contained 2 small packages marked #1 and #2. Just to be awkward let's open Door #2. Monty! And we have an excellent half-dozen including 4 1958T and a pair of 1960T grey backs (Marvellous Marv and Dr Strangeglove). Now on to Door #1. Hmmm......obviously Matt is trying to convince me to open up my 1950s collecting habits a bit wider. This one contains a 1958T Gil Hodges (I know its definitely Gil thanks to a previous owner - perhaps Matt himself - writing "Gil Hodges" twice more on the front of the card), a 1951B, a pair of 1953B Color, a 1955B, a 1952T, a 1953T, and a pair of 1956T. Also, in a superb (owl?) example of "One of these things does not belong with the others", the final card in the envelope is a 2008T Barack Obama. After Matt's intervention, I may need to give some serious consideration to finally going for those pre-1957 Topps and Bowman sets. In the meantime, thanks to Mr Yudt for some terrific additions to my collection!! In that short time, my inventory has doubled and I now have over 100 cards from this set, all thanks to OBC -- just amazing! The latest incoming batch included flats from CHUCK SALEK and BOB CORVELLO (a trimmed SCP of Junior Gilliam!) and a puffy from LYNN MILLER with 14 cards. And after just a couple hours of chopping ice off my roof eaves yesterday, I today feel like I boxed 15 rounds with a young Cassius Clay. So what better way to recover than with some coffee, "house clothes" all day, and a couple OBC envelopes! The first comes from LARRY TIPTON, who takes me back to 1951 with five Bowman Jets, Rockets & Spacemen. These wild stories of space travel surely caused numerous nightmares for some of the more timid kids of the day. It's a wonder any of these kids grew up even semi-sane! Thanks Guru! The second envelope comes from RANDY WELK, who sends a high number 1969 Topps of Fred Whitfield for my OBC-only set. I am going to break some protocol here and mention some other early 90s cards also in Randy's envelope. Randy killed not one, not two, but THREE sets, two of which had been "hanging around" for twenty plus years! Completed were the 1993 Fleer Football Steve Young subset, 1994-95 Upper Deck Hoops, and 1999 Upper Deck Legends (finally finished of with Don Larsen's 1956 perfect game). Thanks Randy!! That's the home of the HootOwl Peter Mead.
I probably should have changed my silly moniker years ago but after 20 years I guess I am the Familytoad.

None of that matters today as Peter mailed his part of a swap, 30 direct hits to my 1952 Topps List! That's a real number...30 hits to the first full Topps Baseball Card Set, the iconic 52's!

This is major milestone for me.
I used to track just 1953-1980 Topps for my Quest Number. That number sits at just 225.

Now, due to the Owl's offering, I can start tabulating 1952-1980 and still be ~300 to go.
Only problem is that I haven't sent my part of that swap (yikes) . Cheap excuse , after getting called to work this weekend I thought I'd have more time.

Big time thanks Peter, you'll get yours soon and then some!
OBC Forever,
Brian

Another day of high temps was followed by sub-zero temps which gradually rose to three or four days of temps in the teens. I plowed my driveway after the first snow, (chat, about an eighth of a mile long). I managed to get it plowed again after the sleet and rain just before it froze again, (I have a blade on my ATV). While I was at the end of the driveway, I grabbed the mail and strapped it to the ATV. There it has been for several days now, forgotten. Bickell was a key player in the Hawks Cup victory two years ago, scoring a multitude of goals while clogging up the net in front of the goalie. From: ChicoD1@aol.com Awesome thanks as a triple play hits my mailbox today! Mike Rich (yes I am a "RICH" man)- Hits a 'lucky" 7 from 59. He hopes I enjoy the back variations...ummm YES I do! And did I mention that 3 are in the TJ - "Tremendous Job" Valacak hits me with another 59 of rookie star John Romano. He also destroys my 80s Mets sticker wantlist (but I did not mention that here). With baseball right around the corner, I love looking at those from when the Mets were great. They are about to be great again! And Ken "Piles On" Pillion asks if these are ok.... Lets see- 2 61 Fleers that are on my list. Ummm YES! Now the packs from Mike and TJ bring me under goal for the 59s, so they both get credit for bringing me under 100 for that set! After a long ass week at work, it's so great to get envelopes in the mailbox and always great to get from these guys. Thanks LOADS!
