I love the back where they talk about the exciting new Superman Gum and cards that are coming. Realizing that Superman has only been out for a year or two, that's surprising to me that they had cards coming already. I didn't realize that he "took off" so fast. I too have fond memories of Ernie Banks. One of the first Phillies games I attended at Connie Mack Stadium was vs the Cubs of Ernie, Ron Santo and Billy Williams. Even without the treasures of ebay, the last week has seen some great packages come into the MeyerGray household, including from the following fantastic people: Anthony Arbeeny, who competes a trade by sending a 60 Leaf high number of Lee Walls, and a T206 of Davis=85. Not sure which one is rarer, but both are greatly appreciated! Joel Freedman two packages my way =96 the first brings two 1954 Topps hockey card =96 that set goes a year without a hit that I can remember, and then two come in the door! The second packed puffy hits football and hockey, with 20 vintage football hits from the 60s and 70s, 17 other football cards, 9 vintage hockey cards from the 70s (with LaFleur and Dryden), plus three others. Wow! Lynn Miller sends two of the 62 Topps variations I need, and then adds two Kahn=92s cards to the package. He hoped they helped=85. Perhaps thinking they were from the 65 set, which is on my list=85. Nope, these are from 66=85. And my first two from that set which by OBC law means I am now working on that set! Fantastic surprise Lynn! Aaron Shirley helps get me closer to my goal of 100 pre-1976 OPC hits for the year =96 with a dozen from 75, including Billy Williams and Bert Blyleven! Kudos should also get tossed to the USPS who, despite a pretty significant northeast/coastal snowstorm, managed to get this puffy from Florida to upstate NY in just four days. What a pleasure it was to interact with Anthony Arbeeny, Bob Neill, Taylor Schock, Guru Tipton, Mac Wubben and OBC dealers Jack Zerby and Kurt Toudot. As always cards were part of the greeting and I for the life of me can't remember who gave me what. It's tough meeting 4 or 5 guys at once. Lame excuse, I can't remember what Taylor gave me and I have known him for years. I remember Mac gave me an 1915 E106 American Caramel for my type card collection because I wrote it down on the back of the sleeve, Bob passed along 5 '61 Post, a 61T Spahn, 61 Leaders card and '63 WS card with Whitey Ford, I think it was Taylor who gave me a '66 Twin RC High number and I can't remember the others, Guru gave me 2 '59T including the Spahn AS hi # & a 64T Coleman. That leaves about 6 or 8 from Ant so some were probably shared by others. Promise that I will get better next time. I will take a sharpie and just write it on the card.....that would keep it in OBC for sure. Other cards shared collectively by the group included 59T Friend AS, 61T Bunning, 63T Peters RC, '61T Wynn, '63T Leaders w/Koufax & Gibson. I am sure that I botched this up royally but I really came away with even more appreciation of OBC. You guys are too awesome. They even extended an offer to attend the national which I may be able to do this year with my frequent flyer Also found some good deals. Soon to be added OBC dealer Steve Bradenburg (usually travels with Jack Zerby) had about 25 '64T high numbers set aside for me. Then we found one guy selling for 6% of BV on his 3 junk boxes. I would like to have had all of that stuff but settled for 13 '55B for $14 total. Kurt had a great looking 59T Killebrew hi # in his bucket that now resides in my binder. Kurt also helped me with a 66T Klimchock, 67 Ferrara and Dementer. I think he threw in some 64s too. Jack Zerby gave me a 66T Cueller Hi# SP for what I consider a really good deal, then he tacked on 5 more '63s for 1/3 of the marked price. Overall I was ecstatic with the visit and purchases. Already looking forward to the next one. Thanks guys, I enjoyed it. ================= To: Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2015 18:50:05 -0500 Subject: Saturday incoming From: "Mark Holland" On a day where I picked up many high numbers at the show in Raleigh, I got home and had 2 more OBC packages...... . Sam Taylor said that he wasn't sure that he had sent me a card before so he thought today was a good day to start. And he delivered big time by sending a 66T Ron Perranoski. As you know this is a tough hi # SP. And you know that I picked up 3 of those today at the show....but not this one. Down to 16 on the 66T set. . Jim Thayer sent ~ 200 69T in really nice shape for my new 69T set. These included a half a dozen high numbers. Flanked on the outside were cards that looked old and served as great packing material and will be mentioned elsewhere. Thank you gentlemen. ================= Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2015 16:33:58 -0800 To: OBC thanks Subject: thanks to whitworth and thayer From: John Dahms thanks to Jeff Whitworth for a nice RAOK including 3 cards for my 75 topps set, foster, gibson and schmidt. thanks so very much Jeff, much appreciated. and to Jimi Thayer for a nice swap of 2nd set needs. he put a very nice selection of 69 and 70 topps cards for me. and he also includes a fleer world series card for the ride. thanks for the swap Jimi, always a pleasure. Sal Domino OBC - 1992 ================= To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" , Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2015 19:55:56 -0500 Subject: Raleigh Card Show Report (Saturday) From: Taylor Schock Another good day at the Raleigh show. A great day if you include hanging out with 5 other OBCers. I got there BEFORE Guru today, but not too much before, and waited for the coordinated arrival of Mac, Ant, and Mark who basically arrived at the same time, with Bob a short time later. Handshakes all around. Mac Wubben passes on a great T206 of the player who introduced the shin guard to the major leagues and developed the first batting helmet (and HOFer to boot), Roger Bresnahan. Thanks Mac! Ant Arbeeny sends me Packard with this WoW card, a '58 Redskin Leo Elter, and another T206, this one of Harry Gasper. Thanks Ant! Mark from Ork Holland hands me 3 Mork and Mindy cards, a '69 Jimmy Butler FB 4-in-1, and a pair of '75 FBers in Jake Scott and the great Joe TheismannRC. Thanks Mark! Bob Neill provides me with a Red Man Johnny Logan, a '70 Topps Lou Brock poster for my daughter, and probably the coolest item for my daughter's Lou Brock collection, a '70 Chemtoy superball. I've had a few of these before but I don't think my daughter's ever seen one, and I have a feeling she'll think this is the coolest thing since texting. Just one question. How do I put this in here Lou Brock binder? Thanks Bob! Most of my show collection quest was against OBC tradition as I ended up purchasing a bunch of upgrades. BUT, I did find some great OBC style Red Mansfrom hopefully soon to be OBC dealer Steve not-Ritten-but Brandenberg, a small stack of 20-centers ('50s through '69 deckle edge), and a W514 Walter Johnson from Jack Zerby for my secret type-card collection. The best part of course was walking, standing, sitting, and eating with fellow OBCers, who I hope enjoyed the show as well and found a few things of use. Another great day! Hoping that everyone arrives home safe and sound. I actually might finish this set some day. Thanks Larry, they are MUCH appreciated! The show had a little less dealers than usual, but with 4 OBC dealers, 1 potential OBC dealer, and an obvious OBC dealer type (Alan Sturgis with his %6 BV cards as Larry noted), there was a lot of picking going on. I actuallyfinished a set from Andy's $2 box (an unmentionable, just barely UV Jabbar) and picked up a few others there as well. Will be stopping by to dig through more of his stuff tomorrow. Lucky me today, getting my name drawn for adoor prize of $20 card show bucks, that I proceeded to spend most of at Alan's 6% table on '56 Topps and '55 Bowman FB cards and a few other odds andends. Hey, how can you pass up an Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsch card in decentcondition for less than $2? Picked up a few a Kurt's table, including a $5 '56 Yankees TC bring the '56set down to 3 (of course, 1 is Mantle). Got a few '57 upgrades at Larrie Dean's table, and will look more closely at some prewar there tomorrow. Picked up a stack of unopened Conlon blisters at Chandy's table, but no luck inbusting any autographs out of them. Just before I left I went through Ed Lawson's stuff and picked up about 50 '60s upgrades. Ed doesn't usually havemuch OBC condition stuff, but he's a great guy and his cards start at a reasonable price and he always gives me a good discount on top of it. I'll be back for the start tomorrow and look forward to catching up with Mark, Mac, Ant, and Bob as well as Larry again. May need to cruise the flea market as well for a break, providing it isn't too cold or windy, and hopingour favorite produce guy is there also. Hotel is a brand new Springhill Suites (Mariott property) SUPER NICE $79 a night. I haven't driven a long distance road trip in over ten years, so I was anxious for this trip a 6.5 hour drive. Arrive at the show 1/2 hour before the official opening but they were letting customers in early. Called Taylor and he was there in about half an hour. Taylor greeted me with the "OBC HANDSHAKE" two 1911 hits both gold bordered T205 beauties "Yankees" Quinn, and "Pirates" Leever. WOW Thanks Taylor! I bought quite a few cards today. Andys Vintage Sports Cards (Syracuse NY) was set up and he had a good supply of 50s-60s Topps hockey cards and as I am closing in on these sets found several hits. He had his cards priced to sell according to condition, and told me he would sell them to me at half of this price:) Well when it was all over, I had to make a quick trip to my car for the checkbook as I didn't want to use all my cash first thing:) Example 1965 Topps #108 Gordie Howe priced $25 and I got it for 50% of that. 1958 Topps #40 John Bucyk priced at $20 purchase price $10. At least 25 hitsto my short list VERY happy with these. Went back at the end of the show and bought all the Blackhawk cards he had that were cheap for my pal TJ:) Kurt Turdot (and his wife and kids) was there and you can imagine I spent some time digging through his bargain bins. 1948 Bowman football SPs NM these go for $100 "corner clipped" priced $5 I found nine hits! Kurt sold me the last card I needed for my 1964 Philadelphia football set Mike Ditka $5. Kurt also sold me a rare 1962 Post baseball SP #124 Joey Jay with the blue lines around the stats he sold it to me for $20 I think NM it's $300. Also in the bargain box I purchased a 1962 Topps baseball hi number Rookie ParadeJim Bouton Bo Belinsky RC I dont know the number because there are 2 hole punches on the card lol but $5 seemed cheap even though I already have thiscard. Taylor leads me to a guys whose cards are priced 6% of book I buy fourteen 1962 and 1965 Topps hi numbers for less than $1 each '65 Topps Boog Powell in there I have all these already they will find good homes in OBC May have made one mistake for $10 bought what I thought was a T205 Gold Border John "D" Miller on the Bio but I forget The "D" should be the first line in the bio not his name on the back. But looking closer I think this might be a third version where the "B" is kind of messed up? I dont know oh well=85 Some non sport hits too '57 Goofy Postcards, '59 Fleer Spins and Needles, Funny Valentines, others too. Almost forgot picked up a needed 1966 Philadelphia football Gale Sayers RC but this one wasn't $5 lol! Looking forward to meeting uptomorrow with Mac Ant Bob Mark and Taylor again! ================= Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2015 18:39:58 -0800 To: Obc Thanks Subject: Thanks to Joel Freedman From: Rick Joel sent two Kellogg's my way these are probably my weakest series so theyhave been taking a beating lately.
