From: Wayne Delia Over the past two or three weeks, I've gotten a couple of letters from some of the guys with a few much-needed and much appreciated cards for my partial sets. I've been pretty quiet for the past year or so, after the death of my dad last November, but recently the kind letters and cards I've gotten have inspired me to get back into more regular collecting and going to card shows. Kent Goto sends a 1975 card, but there's something unusual about it - it's quite a bit smaller than the normal ones. That fits in very nicely with my partial Topps 1975 Minis set, which I call "The Set That OBC Built" because each and every card, over many years, was sent to me by different OBC members. It's come a long way, as I only need a little more than 30 cards. Kent's a USBC Certified bowling coach, as you know from his business card, and when my son (now a senior in college) was in high school, he really came out of his shell when he joined his bowling team and earned three varsity letters, so scholastic bowling has been a big part of our lives for quite some time. Also contributing a 1975 Topps Mini card to "The Set that OBC Built" is Joe Denning, who included a second 1977 Hostess bittersweet card of "Gotta love him, gotta hate him" Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter. We love Carter because he was a great guy, a great catcher, and an avid baseball card collector himself; we hate him because... you know why... it's a sore subject... he should have struck out with the bases empty and 2 out in the bottom of the 10th in the 1986 World Series Game Six in Shea Stadium. Instead... well, how about we change the subject. Jim Thayer sends along three hits on my list for the Topps 1968 set, and no words of mine can describe how important this set is for me. I was 11 years old and started collecting by picking up a few packs at a time of the Third Series. I must have had a dozen each of Mantle, Rose, Bench Rookie, and Yastrzemski. I got the entire second series from Woody Gelman's Card Collectors Company in NYC, mint, for $2.35 including postage. Mint Ryan, Clemente, Aaron, you know the drill. And I recall trading Jimmy Donaruma 100 assorted Series 3 and 4 cards for a creased 1st Series #50, Willie Mays, which to this day remains the most valuable (to me, of course, not from any book value) card in my collection. I'm only about 30 cards away from completing a 2nd set of Topps 1968, but every card I can hold in my hands takes me back to much simpler days, and there are welcome empty slots for Clay Carroll, Jim Lonborg, and Wade Blasingame. I stopped by the "East Coast National" in White Plains, NY which was probably the first card show I've been to in maybe five years. Some of the dealers looked familiar, very little off-condition vintage stuff was available. I'm in the market for completing my 1940 Play Ball set, which is now down to - wouldn't ya know it - about 30 cards to complete, but they're all HOF's, key superstars, and high numbers. I won a 1953 Bowman Color #1 Davey Williams on eBay from John Morrison (his eBay ID is oldbbcards) and he threw in a couple of nice, beat-up old 1956 Topps along with it, which reminded me in a big way how much I really enjoy collecting these cards in the G/VG range. One of the few remaining things on my bucket list is to complete the 1940 Play Ball set, so we'll see how far I can get with that. Thanks again to these three guys and anyone else I haven't had the chance to thank in person or by email. Your thoughtfulness is always appreciated. ================= To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2014 20:33:00 -0400 Subject: September is OBC month From: KEVINM38@aol.com Hi all, I received my 5th package of cards from OBC members today (I love it) This time Joe Denning is the one hitting my mailbox with a 1952 Bowman and a 1961 Fleer Greats card (Grover Cleveland) Joe, Thank you so much for the hits!! I've got this funny, imbalanced wantlist in which I have stood within 2 cards of completing the 54Bs, while I still have three 70's sets that have 100+ to go. I've also sent, by my count, one hundred eighty-six 54B's into the OBCsphere, not a bad starter set except it's spread out throught the whole group. > Many, many, MANY times I have considered just pulling the trigger and buying the last two cards. But instead I spent that money hitting other guys lists, because pretty much my favorite thing to do in OBC is kill sets. > Don't take that as bragging. I am well aware that in the OBC echelon I am probably a 3rd tier hitter, maybe a .240-.260 guy who gets to hang aroundfor his glovework (okay, this analogy works better in the 1950's) and is lucky to be a part of the crew. Many of you spend far more than I do on others and are far more generous. I definitely believe in What Goes Around Comes Around and I trust that works for all of us. I keep careful track of all I get and all I send, and I know there are some folks who have hit me whom I have never hit. ONce in a while I get to surprise them, usually by blowing the wad on ebay. Living in Nicaragua I have limited options for hitting folks and my dupes box is probably one of the shallowest in OBC. > But I'm not bad at sniping those down-to-one sets, either. I believe I've got 10 kills for the year so far, and i just managed to bump a Top 5 hit,as well, which is rare and exciting for me. > WES SHEPARD took it upon himself to KO my 54 Bowmans. He kind of went the extra mile, since he sent them to what he thought was my address, had them bounce back to him, and got them to the new correct address. So I now have a COMPLETE 1954 BOWMAN SET, with the arrival of #58 Pee Wee Reese and #145 Billy Martin, compliments of Wes. Thanks, Wes! > I have to say a few more things about completing this set. Like I said, it's been a funny obsession for me. I believe Bill Ashton sent me my first54 Bowman (Cole, Atwell, Seminick), and I immediately fell in love. Therewas and is for me something magical about these old cards. (Yep, I know, some of you collect cards half a century older. But these predate me by 14 years, so for me they are pretty old, nonetheless.) I know the 53 Bowman are a better-looking set. I'll probably start in on those in earnest one of these days soon, and I did manage to win the auction lot for them. But these are the cards I loved first and they are my set. > I found an ebay lot of 8, I think, with both the Mantle and Berra--and I won it for under $100! The Mantle, which I scanned and sent for OBC appraisal, has a hole in it, which careful arrangement of the cardboard conceals. It's a surprisingly nice-looking card for it's actual condition. > When I snapped a tendon in my foot, which required surgery and then months of immobility that I thought might drive me insane, OBC gave me a seriousboost with a hailstorm of 54Bs. That was the big getting over the hump, when some of you guys sent me some of the big names, some nicely Tipton, somejust plain nice. The great moment was when Mac and a group of guys gangedup to buy me the Mays AND Whitey Ford cards. I am getting a little watery-eyed typing that. That was incredible for me. I really felt loved by youguys. It's just cardboard, but it's a mutual passion we have, and the gesture meant even more than the cards themselves. > Another moment in that long Hacking was when the late Ryan Distelrath gotin on the action. He sent me a #84 Larry Doby and apologized it wasn't a bigger hit. I told him what a monster of a player Doby was and how it was a HUGE hit. We kept swapping emails for several weeks and I got to know Ryan much better. He told me how OBC had lifted his spirits when he needed itmost. He died not very long after that. Rest in Peace, Ryan. Thanks forthe > These are the OBCers who contributed to this set: Ashton, Fitak, Valacak,Fr. Pat, Talbot, Skoglund, Stamper, Schott, Mclaughlin, Ellis, Morganti (Bob Feller!), Rick Johnson, Rick Lyons, Dingman, Dejong, Perry, Shirley, Pillion, Welk, Donaldson, Corvello, D'Angelo, Mandell, Wubben, Mroz, STAN HACKwho sent Gil Hodges, Moleta, Distelrath, Gray (Campanella), Housley, Reed,Neill. and then Stamper with Preacher Roe to bring it to three and Welk with Don Larsen to drop it to two. > Two more things about my 54 Bowman set. First, I decided a good while ago to go for the Master Set, so I am also collecting the variations. I am about halfway there. I will post my wantlist for variations today. > Second, and I tell you this without apology, I am eventually trying to collect this set in EX condition. Of course, you can guess that many that have arrived are not, and I am less than halfway to getting a whole set in EX, though notably, the Mays is a beautiful EX, at least in my eyes. But every time I upgrade, someone in OBC gets a 54B. I haven't really bought any cards for myself to speak of since I moved to Nicaragua (with the recent auction being the big exception, though mis-bids helped keep that down), but when I spend money on cards, it's usually 54B upgrades. So today I will also post my upgrade list. This doesn't mean I don't appreciate all the cards that have come in from you guys, however gloriously Tiptonesque, that collectively killed my set. Wes Shepard's Pee Wee Reese and Billy Martin are about the size of 51Bs, post-trimming, and the set is killed. But for whatever reason, this is the one I'm trying to make nice. As always, I gratefully receive cards in any condition, and there are about 8 cards in this setthat would be upgrades merely by being the size in which they were issued, whatever their condition otherwise. > Oh, and I guess there is a third thing, too: the #66 Williams is still out there, my personal Great White Whale. Every time I find out an OBCer has one, I always ask how much they got it for. Someday. In EX? Now that is a laugh! But a guy can dream; the dreaming is a big part of what makes collecting fun, right? > I know, this one belonged in Ramblings, not Thanks, but again, Wes Shepard killed my 54 Bowman set after 6 years and a TON of OBC generosity and help! Thanks, Wes, and thanks, OBC! > Peace and Joy, Brothers, > Mike ================= Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2014 09:53:12 -0400 To: "OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com" , Subject: Re: [OBC-Thanks] Set Kill Thanks and Ramble On From: Jimi Congrats on completing one of my favorite vintage sets, too! > Peace and Joy, Brothers, > Mike ================= Date: 17 Sep 2014 12:36:11 -0700 To: Subject: A couple of thanks From: rjsfgmv@aol.com ================= Date: 17 Sep 2014 13:21:15 -0700 To: Subject: Sal hits some sets! Top 5 in ERA - never (3 top 10s), Top 5 in HWI once (4th in 1966) - 3 top 10s. This is the conversation I was interested to have. Is "stat accumulation" a qualifier for the Hall? Is longevity? I hear you about categories in which he did not lead. But he DID win two hundred eighty-six games for the teams for which he pitched, There are 74 pitchers in the Hall of Fame. Meaning more than forty of them did not win as many games as he did. And wins is a big deal when you're a pitcher. Also, he won the second-most Gold Gloves at pitcher, next to Maddux. He won them consecutively, including switching leagues and won his last at age 37. How important is that? You could argue he is the second-best fielding pitcher in history. Also, in 1966, his great year, he got 0 votes for Cy Young. Nor did anyone else except the winner, Sandy Koufax. Koufax had a phenomenal year and deserved all those votes, but Kaat was 25-13, 2.75 ERA, 19 complete games, 3 shut outs. It didn't compare with Koufax's year--he pitched 27 complete games!--but in 1967 that season would have won easily, in either league. Something I picked up from Hank Aaron's autobiography was not to take award voting at such face value. I think there are definitely two sides to the argument. His won-loss % is squarely mediocre. But overall, I still think he should have gotten in. On Sun, Sep 21, 2014 at 8:32 AM, Mike Mackie wrote: > I've never thought Kaat was an HOFer - IMO he's the classic stat > accumulator. First was 1970, which is really getting down to the wire. KEVIN MARTENS and WES SHEPARD each sent a three-pack. Wes's included Hank Aaron (!!), which is cool because I remember getting a 70 Hank last year from Bob Donaldson and then turning it right around to Wes when he asked for help finalizing his 70 set. At that point I was still a hundred cards from completion and figured Wes needed it more than me. Just goes to show the magic of OBC! Steve Rittenberg dug out the missing cards/stickers for some sets that are going on eBay this week for the Renee Hair Auction. Plus he helps me out big time in a non-card related way. THANKS STEVE!! He also threw in some Hostess cards for good measure. THANKS MARK!! Sam Taylor brings a smile to my face yet again with a three pocket sleeve of Hostess. Tom Seaver and Robin Yount highlight this bunch. THANKS SAM!! Thanks to everyone who's sent me something, even if I've neglected to thank you for it promptly (or accidentally omitted a thank you note completely). Thanks also to everyone who has read this far! Phase two of the post vacation to do list: OUTBOUNDS. Hope to hit the PO tomorrow some time with packages.
