Of course, we all know what makes a great card show -- out great OBC brothers! Brian Lindholme spent Friday/Saturday at my house and we had a blast. Friday dinner at a Thai restaurant, Saturday at the card show. We followed with a snack and play time at a local casino. My plan was to win $1500 so I could go back to the card show on Sunday and buy this cool postcard I saw there. Alas, the fates had other ideas! Saturday night Brian and I were joined by Rick Lyons going out to dinner (where they have wild boar burgers on the menu), followed by a home session of baseball talk and a Mariner's victory on TV. Of course, there were the usual OBC handshakes. Rick slapped me with 24 1944 Yankees stamps for my '44 collection. I had none up to this point - THANKS RICK! Over the course of two days Brian wowed me with a HOF T206 (Frank "Home Run" Baker) and an unfinished factory reject Louisville Slugger baseball bat (how's THAT for oddball?). At the show, I found nothing on my wantlist but that (of course) doesn't mean I came home empty handed. I picked up a pair of postcards depicting a downtown Seattle scene with Obak advertising on a billboard. These will make great companion pieced for my Seattle Obak collection. I also picked up an American Caramel Earl Sheely card. Earl has Seattle ties as he was General Manager for the Seattle Rainiers and his son (Bud) was born in Washington and played MLB (Chicago) and for the Seattle Rainiers. My main motivation for this card, however, was to display it alongside Earl's 1922 Nielson Chocolate and his 1922 W573 cards -- all look identical from the front (except for coloration). This morning (Sunday) I stuffed Brian full of Belgian Waffles and Bacon, and sent him back to the show to meet up with Rick and Mike Diamanti (Coffee Dude). Mike says it's the first WSSCA show for him in six years! All in all a fantastic weekend. Now I have to wait until November for the next WSCCA show. We made it through the line twice. On the way there, Mark handed me a top loader with a pair of miscuts, including Yaz, 4 1980 Stop N Go FB for a rarely hit set, and a MSA Carousel disc. Yesterday was the local Redford show and who else was there, but Mark and Rocky! Mark hands me 4 1956 Gum Adventure upgrades, with another pair of miscuts. I think this is a start of another set, although I do have a set described as 1928 Players Footballers on my list. I do not think these are from the same set. By the way, my New York Yankee favorites list starts out FRED SANFORD as #1! Was FRED a great Yankee? Nope. But he was my uncle, and he was an awesomeman and a Yankee. I was always little and skinny, and not everyone made it through little league tryouts when I was young. After 5th grade, Uncle Fred knew I was disappointed when I wasn't chosen to play for a little league team...again. So he came to my house and took me downtown to a sporting goods store (everyone in the store knew who he was) and he bought me a BIG 8 Mickey Mantle Rawlings mitt! I could not believe it. It had 8 pictures of Mantle on the inside of the box, and I remember noticing this first: themitt had soft fur on the inside of the wrist strap. I loved that mitt, wore it out after years of play, and today it is long gone. But the memory ofUncle Fred's trip... to buy me a new mitt... will NEVER, EVER be forgotten! From: Don Rice Thanks to OBC I've been thrown back in time today to 1964, as a seven year old kid in suburban Boston wandering down to the local corner store (Zitzow's) to spend my hard earned nickels on cards and candy. Starting off is a puffy from RICK JOHNSON who sends not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR 1964 Topps Stand-ups. This particular set (along with the 1964 Topps Giant set) always excites me, simply because it did so to me way back when. To a 7 year old Red Sox fan in 1964, these cards were so totally different that they just captured my imagination, and still do today. Rick sends the "Howard brothers", Elston and Frank, as well as Don Drysdale (with a very clever and effective recreation of the missing yellow background). He also includes another favorite from my childhood, none other than Bill Mazeroski. Thanks Rick! Still living the 1964 dream, LARRY TIPTON continues his regular non-sport onslaught with a 1964 Donruss Addams Family card, as well as two more Rails & Sails from a slightly earlier era. The Addams Family cards were a Halloween staple for me. Although I never saw or bought a full pack as a kid, they were regularly included in Halloween "grab bags" available at that same corner store. Thanks Guru! Now that my 1964 daydream is over, it's back to 2014 and reality. Holy crap... that's 50 years ago. How did this happen?
