Overdue: Taylor Schock answered my call for help on my 1970 set with a nosebleeder of Sam McDowell, plus a '72 high number Ray Newman to keep Sam company. Thanks so much, Taylor! Current: Sal sent a couple more hits to the 1970 set and two hits to the '68. Much appreciated, Sal! As mentioned in the 2nd paragraph, I sent out a call for help with my 1970 set in February. With hits from Taylor and Sal, that list now stands at a mere six cards. Once again, I am asking for OBC's help in finishing this set. I never request help with my wantlist, but I am making an exception here. This is the email I sent out on 2/1/14: Longtime members knew and remember David Kolenda with great fondness. He has been gone several years now, but while he was alive he was a great OBC member and a great friend to those who knew him. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person during Vegas gatherings and spoke with him often via chat and phone. Back in the day, many of us used to gather nightly in a chat room via ICQ. Cardboard flew, .wav files were played (who remember's Barry Clesh's eeeeeeeeeeee.wav?) and lots of laughs were had. One night we were talking about our favorite and least favorite vintage sets. I mentioned that I thought the 1970 set was the ugliest of all time - still do, actually. Well, within a week I got a box in the mail with a substantial starter lot of 1970 baseball, courtesy of David. I called him up and he had a nice little laugh at my expense. So I threw it up on my wantlist, but made it a very low priority. As the old-timers know, David was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in September 2007. After he died I renamed my '70 set the "David Kolenda Memorial Set" so I would always remember his friendship, his generosity and his wit. Which brings me today. Wes Shepard hit my .70 list yesterday with nosebleeder Dave Duncan, leaving a mere eight cards to go. I would like to ask for OBC's help in finishing the set, and then it is my intent to auction the set off on eBay with 100% of the proceeds to be donated to the American Cancer Society in David's name. I will either sell it under my account or get in touch with Rick Probstein or PWCC and see if they would consign it for me without charging their normal commission. Both companies get a LOT of eyeballs on their auctions and might enhance the ending price. I have been kicking the idea around for the past few years and think it is time to do more than think about it. Here is what is left. I will check for gremlins, but I'm pretty sure I did that a few years back and the list below is current. 300 654 660 669 712 713 (updated list of 3/4/14) Thanks so much. ================= Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2014 16:10:51 -0800 To: Thanks OBC From: Stamper Subject: A waive from Elwell Jake sends a 71 Fleer WS card #1 knocking that set down to the final two cards. As nice as the card is, the story behind it (shared by Peter in an impeccably typed letter) is even nicer. This card, you see, hails back to the days of Dave Kolenda, one of our notable OBCers who has passed on. In this group we often talk about "the healing power of cardboard", but this card highlights another characteristic of this group... that these little pieces of cardboard allow us to remember things, places, and PEOPLE, memories of whom might otherwise fade from our collective conscience. First MARSHALL WEST opened a can of worms with an RAOK three-pack of 72 Presidents. You see, it included Gerald Ford, who of course was not yet a president in 1972. I did a little research and learned Topps reissued the set in 1974, amending a line to Nixon's card about his resignation and adding Gerald Ford. They also scrapped the "candidates" from the 72 set so goodbye Ted Kennedy and Shirley Chisholm (one of the all-time weirdest Topps cards IMO). A nifty cardboard education to end the week. ANT ARBEENY sent his half of a recent swap in the form of a handful of 51 and 52 Bowmans with all manner of juvenile destruction -- trimming, staple holes, tape and an Ebba St. Claire that had evidently once been made into anairplane. Included was sentimental favorite Eddie Waitkus. Beautiful! Finally BOB DONALDSON sent an RAOK flat of 4 Bowmans, a Marichal scratch-off and a Goudy reprint of Nap Lajoie. Just phenomenal. I note that my New Years 51-52 Bowman campaign has been a resounding success. I started with maybe half a dozen as of Dec 31 and now have 95 of them, in large part because of OBC! So how's it going, you ask? Well my ATV just quit in the middle of the driveway. Unknown reason. Had to push it back to the garage, (it's a big one). Truck sprung a coolant leak from a little freeze plug in the throttle body. Tried to plug it with a brass plug because the small freeze plug is not available, (doesn't even show up in the parts breakdowns). Of course, I broke the aluminum throttle body knocking in my plug. Was hoping to finally get some golf in this week after the long winter but there is 2" of snow on the ground this morning. The kitchen faucet sprung a leak and now needs replaced. The mail came in yesterday and was 2" tall, all bills and life insurance packets I didn't ask for. Except...one envelope to calm my nerves and make the day brighter. One of them I have identified as a 1938-39 Goudey Action Gum R1 set, the first forthat set. The other is a "Sicle" Red Ball issue and it's not the 1959 Joe Lowe Corp set but an earlier Joe Lowe set where the back has and Englishand French version side-by-side. I cannot find a specific reference to the year or set number for these. I definitely would like to have #13 from this set as it's a photo of a Regulus missile being launched from a submarine which is one of the type of submarines I served on. Which does bring me to another area now. Over the past couple of years since I startedthis quest which was originally for just U.S. Navy ships, it has spread toother military cards, which is great. Over the years many OBC members have tried to convince me to add the baseball "oddball" sets to my collection instead of just collecting base sets to they could send me something. I always kindly declined those since I'm very happy with just having one card of each player for that year. But now that I'm enjoying these non-sport military cards so much, I will gladly accept these to build those sets. Thanks Richard for some great starts. Jake continues to add to my Hank library with a couple of wonderful paperbacks from the 70's. And I'm not sure if this was by design or not but he also included a post card with a collage of autographed baseballs includingone signed by Hank and another one by Jackie Robinson. And the old-timers in the club and maybe the newer ones who have read my bio remember my connection to Jackie by having been born on the day he broke he color barrierin baseball, April 15, 1947. So not only were the books very welcomed, the actual star of this package was the postcard. I had the chance to meet up with some of OBC's finest up at the Strongsville Show today including Mark Talbot, John McLaughlin, Sam Taylor, and Wes Shepard! Great group of guys for sure and nice to talk cards and learn more about each other. MARK TALBOT passed along a great package of goodies including a '51T Red Back (which never seems to get hits), a '52T Russell, a '53T Klu, a '56T Giles, a '62T Ruth, a few others including a '69T Yaz AS which lowers my set total down to 5, I believe? But the first thing Mark says to me is, "Where'sBrooklyn?" LOL Brooklyn is my 9 year old card collecting daughter who decided that there will be other shows to go to and that she was going to hang back and stay the night at my parents house and celebrate my other daughter's birthday. :) But Mark remembered her and passed along some goodies for her with some newer shiny Indians stuff but she was floored when I handed her another '62T Ruth! She just stood there with her mouth wide open! You made her day, Mark! WES SHEPARD also passed some cards to me at the show with several '65s, '67s, and '68s with HOFers and high numbers in the mix!! I got to meet Wes's youngest son, Nolan, too. Very cool, Wes, and I hope you two had a blast together! The biggest surprise from the show was meeting JOHN McLAUGHLIN, who I had not met before, and shocked me with a great package of '60s cards including a '67T Aparicio and White Ford! Luis Aparicio was one of my favorite players to collect when I was younger in the '80s and '90s because of his defensive presence and the fact that I could afford his cards! :) So cool to meet you, John! When I got home, I received packages from LARRY "GURU" TIPTON and CHUCK SALEK who have welcomed me into the group.
