================= To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2014 14:10:08 -0500 Subject: I don't know what to say... From: topgolf@aol.com Since losing our daughter we have heard the phase "I don't know what to say" many times. It's now my turn to say the same to the OBC. I really can't come up with the words that can adequately convey the feeling that expresses my gratitude for the outpouring of support from the OBC in our time of grief. The auction raised over $3,000 which brings the total for Lily to over $13,000, It won't bring her Mom back, but will help further her education as she gets older. Like many of you, I can't explain what OBC is all about, yeah, there is the card thing, but the core is so much more than that. I'm sure it's been more than 6 years since I sent a card, but I am still supported by many members who I have never met or talked to. That's a very special bond that defines the generosity of this group. This Thanksgiving we went to our Son's in Northridge, California. On a whimI called Peter Iversen and met for dinner with him and his wife Denise. Although it has been 6 years(?) since we last met, it was like we knew them all our life. More of the magic of the OBC. Thank you to all who participated in the auction, and to those who contacted us to offer support through our ordeal. I don't know where my life will go from here, but the OBC will always have a spot in my heart. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the generous support> Rest well, ================= Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2014 15:51:29 -0500 To: Obc Tx thanks Subject: December thanks From: Jake Elwell I've fallen a bit behind on thanking and please let me know if I've left you out! I'm one of many on his 'nice' list this year, as I got an OBC style Christmas card that also had an SCP hit to my recently started Fleer WS set. This one featured the 1944 Series, where St. Louis defeated... St. Louis. Took me a second, but then I remembered the Browns played there. I didn't know they went to the World Series, but that's probably because they lost (and it was over two decades before I was born). THANKS JD!! Also arriving today (along with an eBay win) was a good sized package from Twinsburg, OH. Now I don't even need to look at the directory to know that's the home of my favorite dentist, OBC'er Sam Taylor. The package says "Do Not Open", but it didn't say I couldn't shake it a little... it's making kind of a squeaky noise when I shake it, so I'm stumped as to what it might be... thankfully it's only ...ten ...painfully ...long ...seemingly endless days until I can open it. THANKS SAM!! The eBay lot that arrived jump started my 1960 Topps set(#2). Nobody ever claimed the cheap beat up Mantle I put on the DS server, so I decided I'd put up yet another set that's (somewhat) easy to hit. The list should be current on my web page. Rocky was the 1959 American League Home Run Leader and came to the Tigers from the Indians in a trade for the 1959 batting average leader, Harvey Kuenn. Rocky commented at the time that the Indians "traded a steak for a hamburger". Being eight years old in 1961, I realized that the Tigers were in a pennant race with the Yankees. As the season hit September, I began to collect baseball cards and many years later discovered that almost all of these cards were numbered 523 and higher. When the season ended, the Tigers won over 100 games, but the Yankees won even more and went to the World Series. The Yanks had really great seasons from Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle as I recall. As for Rocky, he was more popular than HOF'er Al Kaline during his time with the Tigers, at least with eight year old little leaguers. 4 hits to the 1958 Topps list, highlighted by a Cubs Team Card, an unmarked checklist and a Moose Skowron All-Star!
A 1959 Topps Bobby Thompson
A duo of 1960 Topps - Billy Martin and Dick Groat
4 hits to the 1966 Topps list, highlighted by Tug McGrawand Lou Brock
3 1970 Topps hits - Ryan Saves the Day!, Gaylord Perry and a nosebleed
and Steve finishes it off with 3 hits to the'71 Topps set, highlighted by a Baylor/Baker rookie card!

An amazing package on an amazing morning. Thanks a ton Steve!

And thanks OBC,
Jimmy "Catfish" Parker

My Santa from Jackson, Mi sent me 30 hits to the 1960T list. He included guys like Friend, Hodges, Skowron, Roberts, Piersall, Kubek, Howard & Master/Mentor Mays-Rigney. That would be a dream team in today's market. Just think of the salaries those guys could command. Awesome gift Santa. Hey John Dahms, I know that you live in Jackson, Mi too. If yousee Santa would you tell him thanks for me? :)Merry Christmas OBC! It was worth the wait (and weight that I lost). Mark sends a great envelope with 2 much needed cards from the 50's. First up is a 52 Topps of Chris van Cuyk smiling in his Brooklyn Dodger's hat, and he also included a great looking 52 Bowman of Pete Castiglione, the old Pirate. Great to open on Christmas morning! Many thanks I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of most of my family, especially the twin granddaughters who are 2 1/2 and are experiencing their first Christmas where they have a clue what is happening. KEN MORGANTI helped Santa by sending me a nice box of treasures this year. I was going to open it after midnight as I was still up wrapping gifts but held off until this morning after stockings were done. When I opened the wrapping paper I saw a wax box of unopened 1986 Topps. I opened it up and immediately saw a couple great cards on top of the packs. They included the Dale Murphy and Andre Dawson rookies from 1977. And then I saw a note from Ken. Ken tells me that this isn't an ordinary box of 1986 wax packs. He took the time to open each pack, remove the technically UV 1986 Topps cards (except the ones that had gumstuck to them) and replaced them all with great vintage hits. I haven't had time to open all the "packs" but from a quick glance at a few of them I see a bunch of 1973 Topps hits and some Kellogg's and Hostess hits in between them. I can't wait to get back from Florida in the beginning of Januaryto tear through the rest of these packs and see everything that Ken sent me. Thats going to be a great time upon my return from our vacation. Thank you so much Ken for this very thoughtful and creative Christmas present!! This is awesome. From: Yaz FINALLY got to open my Secret Santa envelope after a hectic day. The wait was long, but well worth it. Sal Domino is my Santa this year and tromped all over my lists. In an attempt to turn one of my 'have' lists to a 'want' list, Sal sent a '51 Redback of Luke Easter. That gives me 12 of 33. I'm comfortable with changing that one over, Sal. Next, he lopped off a quarter of the '58 Topps list with Tom Morgan and Art Ditmar. That list drops to 6. A '59 Topps Duke Snider drops that list down to a dozen and a 1963 Fleer, Steve Barber cuts that one to a half dozen. Not done yet. A Pirates team card from the '75 Topps Mini set, (set still needs about a half million), and 1974 Kellogg's Willie Horton were next. Still got 15 to go on the Kellogg's set but the next card from the '59 Fleer Ted Williams set brought it down to a mere half dozen too. Finally, after bringing all those sets so much closer, Sal decided to finish one off. A 1968 Topps Game card puts that set to rest. Done in style too, as the card was Roberto Clemente! From: Jerry Coker Secret Santa Brian Lindholme (well I guess its not a secret anymore :-) wows me with a package of very cool cardboard! First off ... Brian read to theend of my want list and saw that I collect Larry Doyle cards as he is a distant relative (my great, great uncle on my Dad's side). Anyway ... Brian includes a 1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Larry Doyle card!! This card is so cool ... it looks the same size as a T206 ... is a portrait ... has rich color ... the back lists the other 24 players in the set E95 set including Cobb & Mathewson ... just a beautiful card! 1909 would have been Doyle's 3rd year with the NY Giants (he was a rookie in 1907 and only played part of that year). Of course 1908 was the famous Merkle game between the Giants and Cubs. If memory serves Doyle came in as a pitch hitter late in that game (he didn't start because he was hurt I think) and ... he made an out . But 1909 was a breakthrough year for Doyle .302 ... 31 SB's ... I wonder when the caramel cards were printed e.g. like around Spring Training as Toppsoften did? Anyway thank you Brian for this great card. But wait ... theresis more. Brian also sends along (27) 54T's (including Brave Johnny Logan, Yankee Phil Rizzuto and Giant Monte Irvin. Of course 1954 was the year the Giants led by Willie Mays won it all! And I think 1954 was the year the film White Christmas was made ... starring Bing Crosby ... co-owner of the Pirate in the 60's? ... just watched that film with my daughter last night :-) And there's more ... (5) 56T's, a 57T Brave Red Murff (love that name!), (7) 59T's including former Brave Ernie Johnson, (2) 60T's (Cincy Clouters and Tony Kubek ... Kubek got hit in the adams apple ... ouch ... late in game 7 of the 1960 WS ... he had to leave the game ... and of course thisis the game that Bing Crosby had filmed off his TV (kinescope) in 1960 andhe put it in his wine cellar ... and was recently discovered and released on DVD) ... (14) 61T's, (2) 65T's (including the Dodgers team card ... the year the Dodgers won it all with the help of Sandy, (5) 70T's and (3) 72T'sincluding Billy Williams. Whew ... Many thanks Brian for this great Christmas package. We're celebrating Xmas this year in Vermont (we usually go to Athens, GA. to visit our families) ... so I did some of my Christmas shopping in your ex-hometown of Rutland, VT. I'll bet you still don't miss the shoveling :-) Hope you have a safe and happy Holiday ... and that goes for all my OBC brethen! Practically the same guy! MARK MACRAE gave me a quite affordable price on a minor league rarity, 1950 Bedard & Donaldson #5, Georges Maranda. BRIAN LINDHOLME for a waived 66 Red Sox hi # of Earl Wilson, who I was just a bit too young to catch in Beantown; MIKE MROZ for a RAOKed quad of 62 Woodies including a Babe Ruth special laminated with some kind of odd vinyl film. Happily I was able to remove the lamination, transforming the card into a standard Tipton-Minter. Finally JOE DENNING hit me with advance return fire in the form of a pair of 71 Coins. From: Jimi Hey guys, It's been a rough break for us here at the Thayer household as my wife is the only one who has NOT been sick yet. Although, it's 12:11 here in the afternoon in Ohio right now and she is passed out on the couch, so I'm sure she is exhausted from attending to all of us. :) The rest of us are on themend, and hopefully I'll be able to send a few packages out at the start of the new year! Thanks today to MIKE MROZ, whom it sounds as though he has come out of hiding, for sending me 3 perfectly trimmed/bordered '53T cards of Wehmeier, Hooper, and Merrero. Looking forward to having you around, Mike! Thanks also to OBC funny man/entertainer, SAL DOMINO, who passes along a few for me....and A BUNCH for my daughter, Brooklyn! I actually got these last week, but with traveling and being sick, I'm just getting to them right now. Looks like Sal has sent Brooklyn some items off her want list (can't mention what they are because they are too shiny to mention! Ha!) and a starter set for her. Along for the ride was a few cards for daddy's lists including my HOF Collection, some '70T Scratch-Offs, and more! Great stuff, guys! I'll be putting my 2015 goals up as well, and maybe I'll throw them up on my website, so you don't have to memorize them! :) HAPPY NEW YEAR! James said he was putting it in the mail with some travelers - SOME?! How about SEVENTY hits to my recently started 1960 Topps set including a high number and a young looking Brooks Robinson? I started the set only a month ago, but the way things are going I might be finished before pitchers and catchers report. THANKS JAMES!!
