I was on a conference call when there was a knock on my door. Handed to me from my colleague was a priority mail box from Stan Hack with a Spartanburg SC return address. Upon closer inspection,Stan sent this package from Indian Trail NC. Hmm, no one in OBC is from Indian Trail. Anyway, after my call, I opened the box and inside was an envelope with a note that I was missed at the Cleveland National. As some of you know, the Cleveland area was our home for 14 years, but a job relocation brought us to South Carolina and I would have been at the National if notfor the new job. So I opened the envelope and my jaw dropped when I saw the following burlap cards: Holy crap, this completed my '68 set in one package! I was speechless , I've been Stan Hacked. Truly an amazing package, thank you Stan! Update: My wife Marina and I sold our home in Ohio and relocated to the Greenville SC area in a rental home. We are looking to purchase a home closer to my work and have a couple possibilities and should finalize by next week. A long month of home searching and paying rent/storage should end by mid-November, then another move - this time local. All the cardboard is safely packed away somewhere in this rental and will be resurrected in their new permanent home. Spirited play by the Orioles in all three games of the ALDS ended the Tigers season. Highlights of the day were three T-218's from Mark including an aviator. a bowler and a pool player. The aviator, J.B. Moisant was a colorful character who once said "nine tenths confidence and one-tenth common sense equals a successful aviator". The card notes that Moisant died on December 31, 2010 while making a preparatory flight prior to competition. The other highlight of the day was Mark's super idea of eating lunch at Mario's about a mile from Comerica and riding Mario's shuttle to the park. This idea was genius, in that the Lions with 65,000 fans and tailgaters were playing right across the street from the Tigers with 45,000 fans making parking near the stadiums scarce and expensive. ================= To: Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2014 21:22:40 -0500 Subject: Thanks to Don Rice From: "George Vrechek" Who sends 1962 and 1963 Fleer footballers Billy Cannon and Elbert Dubenion from Bluffton College where he scored 57 touchdowns. I met Mr. Franks a couple of times later in life (he was a long time general manager for the Salt Lake Bees). Thanks for the memories ED! With Some Rambling Stuck In [1 Attachment] [Attachment(s) from xtrjmx@cox.net [OBC-Thanks] included below] Good afternoon to all... My first thanks goes (in the "Overduer") category goes out to Steve Rittenberg, who gave me a call back in August while he was on his way up to Columbus, Ohio and to the National. I hadn't been keeping up to date with the Nationals, as I was sure that such a trip would be way to far and expensive. As it turned out, as all of you know, the National was going to be in Cleveland. We were at my in-laws place in Maryland when Steve called, but were about to head back to Omaha, stopping for a few daysto visit my brother in Medina, Ohio... just outside of Akron and only about 45 minutes from Cleveland! I was able to skip out on family for a wonderful half-day during the "dealers only" preview to the show. Along the way, Icalled and picked up another old ex-OBC character, Barry Clesh, who lived about half-way between Akron and Cleveland. It was my first time meeting Barry face-to-face and it was great, as was meeting some other guys who I hadonly known by mail/email/chat, some going back to AOL days (Sal and Mac) and others. It was also great to see Guru, Kent, Ken, Kurt Tourdot, and, of course, Steve again. I was really sorry that I wasn't able to stick around longer or come back for the BBQ and share the camaraderie of the swap meet. Along with the great time meeting and re-meeting folks and in spite of my not have a single card with me on my trip, I was still handed a gorgeous 1960 Al Kaline by Mac, an autographed Jim Perry (as a Twin) card by Barry, a UV-infested Michael Jordan card for my son (who will wear nothing but Jordans) by Kurt, and a quart-sized ziplock baggy from Steve. Now any of you who have had the joy of receiving a "mixed bag" from Steve know that there are the usual run-of-the-mill cards such as the pair of '55 Bowmans in this batch, and some off-beat cards (Bicentennial Daze and several types of BrookeBond nonsport cards) and non-cards -- a very cool 45 record with the Twinstheme on Side A and an interview with Lou Holtz and the Gophers fight songon Side B. There are also inevitably some inserts of stars, in this case being my boyhood hero, a Milton Bradley, '65T Embossed and '70T Scratch-off of Harmon Killebrew. There are also usually some variations, such as the uncut Hostess panels of more Twins and a half-UV infested '89T Kent Hrbek... only half-UV because the back is blank. And finally, there are the cards that leave you going "HUH??? WOW!!! What the freak is that???" (caveat here... this does not apply to Josh Levine, who has never seen a card he hasn't been able to identify!). While it took a a little research, I was able to IDthe pair of cutout Killebrews that looked identical, only one was slightlylarger than the other -- AHA... one from the Post and one from the Jello box fronts. A little more research and I ID'd the Helmar Stamp of Germany Schaefer and the team-issue photo of Killebrew. But that still left one Killebrew which I have not been able to identify. I even took it to a local cardshow (I didn't think we had any of those left, but found out we did from alocal dealer who had set up at the National!), where I talked with a guy who has set up at every Twinsfest for the past 20 years... and he had never seen it either (and man, was he drooling!!). So putting my Twins collector pride aside, I humbly ask this great collective of hobby enthusiasts for help. What the heck is this (see attached)??? Regardless, "thanks" seems so inadequate when getting such great stuff from such great guys, but that's all I can muster for the National crowd. *Note to self -- save a little thisyear and get to Chicago for next year's National! In the weeks following the National, I received two more great envelopes (these, for those keeping track, are the "Overdue" thanks). Richard Dingman sent me a nice note saying he was sorry he missed me at the National... I'm sorry too. Richard sent a pair from '66 and a '67 Al Kaline. Wow! Thanks, Richard! Mike Rich also sent a great envelope with a sheet worth of 1960 Topps including Tigers and Dodgers team cards. Thank you, Mike!! The Overduest thanks of the day goes out to Peter Mead for an envelope I found amid a huge stash of old bills and mail, and when I mean old, let's just say that this coming November 8th will mark the 3rd anniversary of it's mailing. The contents of this lovely little envelope included an awesome '67Felipe Alou and a terrific '53 Bowman of Lou Kretlow. I didn't know much about Lou, so I was looking up info and found that he became a golf pro at Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid, Oklahoma. According to Wikipedia: "In 1961, Lou set a world record when he scored a hole-in-one on a 427-yardpar 4 at Lake Hefner Golf Club in Oklahoma City. This shot on a straight-away hole with an actual wooden wood and old style ball prompted Duffy Martin, the developer of Guthrie's Cedar Valley Golf Club, to say =E2=9CIf Lou had the kind of equipment they are using now, Tiger Woods couldn't carry Lou=E2=99s jock strap.=E2=9D Great stuff, Peter... and apologies for the inconceivable (except for thoseof you who routinely deal with adult ADD folks!) tardiness of this thanks. Finally, I wanted to let you all know again how much I appreciate this group. I've picked up a few cards to share that I'll be posting later today. IfI can convince myself that I can get those out in a timely fashion, I may trust myself enough to ask to be moved to the "active" status. Take care and, again, thanks to all! ================= Date: Sun, 19 Oct 2014 08:26:43 -0700 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Thanks and Jeff Allender's House of Checklists From: Ron Perry Hi OBC, Big Thanks out to Larry Tipton for a couple hockey at 61-62T of Charlie Burns and 65-66 of Floyd Smith, a Red Wing.
