I went to a card show today and met up with OBC buddy Taylor Schock (who incidentally slipped me some unmentionables as part of the OBC handshake). Together we went on a quest to find me some 62T Rookie Parades to finish my set. We searched the whole show and found only one, and sadly enough it was one of the two that I already had. So my day ended with no Rookie Parades even though that my main goal at the show. So we visited, shopped, went thru a tornado (yes a tornado passed right over us after Taylor left)....it sounded like a plane flying low overhead. But anyway, after all the excitement, we got home and checked the mail. Hmm, small envelop from Ken Morganti, pretty sure it isn't UV. Opened that bad boy up and there were 2 62 Topps Rookie Parade cards just like the ones I was searching for at the show. I am stoked to have them (Sudden Sam 591 and Hickman on the 598 card) and even more stoked that I didn't find them at the show. I did pick up a starter lot of 400 71 Topps to build another set. Have some dupes so let me know if you need any. Also picked up a 55B Mathews and Aaron. Looks like the guru may have customized the Aaron but the Mathews is pretty nice. As soon as the fall semester was over, my wife and I made the most of my time off, taking a cruise to five countries in Central and South America, highlighted by a trip into the Panama Canal. That high was meet with an equallow, however, as that very night I found out that my grandmother, the woman who played the largest role in raising me into who I am today, had finally passed away after a long illness. The rest of the family was able to delay the funeral until my return to the U.S., and it was very nice passing around great stories about Sibyl, including many of her jokes that cannot be told in church. A highlight: a 96 year old man goes to the doctor to complain about his sex drive, saying that he needs to have it lowered. The doctor replies =93Sex drive lowered? You=92re 96 years old! That=92s all in your head!=94 The old man replies =93I know, I know =96 that=92s why I wantto have it lowered!=94 It was good to get back home, but the New Year brings new classes at school, and we started rehearsals for a play that our theater troop is doing as afundraiser toward a scholarship program in the arts. Both my wife and I are in the play, and it opens on January 31 =96 so that does not leave a lotof time to learn the lines. We are making progress, however. While we were away, some amazing cardboard found its way to my door =96 thanks go outto: Dan Austin, who sends 11 1975 OPC hits, including a very young Bobby Valentine! Ken Goetsch sends an amazing SP from the 1965 Topps football set =96 the first card of Tom Addison! Randy Griffin also sends along holiday greetings as well as two Post cards,a SCP from 63 and the 1961 Pete Runnels card! John Bama Harrell sends a 1934 Batter-Up card of Ed Morgan! Wes Shepard sends two packages my way, with each containing an very sharp SCP =96 the first flat brought a 1953 Bowman Color upgrade of Don Mueller, and the second a 1949 Leaf Gerald Priddy card! Ken Morganti, however, provided the best surprise of the month. He was my OBC Santa, and went above and beyond the call of duty! Starting things offwas a massive stack of 1970=92s Kellogg=92s cards, with names like Brett, Seaver, Jackson, and TWO NOLAN RYANS! Sixteen hits from the rarer 1971 setmade my jaw drop! As if that were not much more than enough, Ken adds a 1956 Topps back variation, three 1978 Topps cards for that second set (Jackson, Yaz and Brock), and three super-tough 1960 Leaf high numbers, includingOrlando Cepeda! Ken Goetsch hits the 1972T football list with a well loved Terry Bradshaw. It definitely looks like a 10c card, Ken, but its going straight into the binder to fill what used to be a blank space, so I'm happy. Only 3 non-high numbers to go on that set, but in reality its one that I don't think I'll ever complete. It's low priority and the highs are just too tough and expensive. Andy Cook provided a welcome pair of 1968/69T hockey. I really love this set, and have been slowly chipping away at it for a couple years now. I'm nowjust a few cards short of two thirds complete, although there are quite a few big names outstanding. Unlike the '72T football however, I think I'll get this one done eventually. Well, one of the lists I looked at and couldn't help was Don Rice's list. Lo and behold, Wednesday's mail brought more from Don to send me ever deeper in debt to him. Don sent a six pack of '54 Topps cards. The highlight for me is the Pete Runnels with the Washington Senators card whom I fondly remember for his batting titles with the Red Sox a couple of years later. He also gets a small mention in the Ted Williams book I am currently reading, 'The Kid'. Thanks Don! And I don't know anything about SGC. Anyway, I was ready to crack open the case and noticed the Roberts card is in sharp corner, wonderful condition. Itold Peter during the evening that I was terribly behind on any kind of thanks so it's not a surprise to me that Mike beat me to the server to reporton our evening. It has been a few years I think since Peter has been in Motown but one thing is always consistent and that is the OBC handshake with accompanying cardboard. Peter slipped me (5) `70 Topps Super football cardswith Roy Jefferson, Deacon Jones, Tom Matte, Lance Alworth and O.J. Simpson. If that wasn't enough Peter also added a `52 Berk Ross card of Gene Woodling and a `69 Nabisco Team Flakes card of the "Say Hey Kid" Willie Mays. Very cool oddball issues that I love - Thanks Peter!!! Mike handed me another `68 Topps poster with Frank Howard and a couple Topps Canadian Football cards from 1959 (Nobby Wirkowski) and 1963 (Ted Frechette). Thanks Mike for the collectibles and for making the arrangement for the evenings festivities - much appreciated! Mike also handed over a couple cards that he had picked up for me when he and Ron Perry hit a show prior to attending the Great Lakes Invitational at Comerica Park. You see Mike called me while I was on vacation on Florida tosee if I had interest in these cards and I gave him "my price" and on Wednesday he delivered. The `63 Topps set is now completed with the addition ofthe Gonzalez, McMullen, Weis, Rose Rookie Star card AND the `52 Topps low number set is also compete with the delivery of the Willie Mays card. Theseare (2) cards I did not think I would find soon at a price I was willing to pay much less landing them both - a big thanks to Mike for "bird-dogging"and contacting me when he found these. I should also give a HUGE assist toclosing out the `63 set to Nick Pelliter who handed me the Mantle at the Chicago National leaving me just the Rose RC to go so both will get mentioned as the set killers on my list. It's been a few months since seeing Mike and like I said a few years since seeing Peter so it was a very enjoyable evening of food, drink, sports, cards and conversation. Thanks to both of you for providing me the excuse to make an evening of it - I hope to be able to hook up again with Peter in Cleveland this year where he hopes to spend a day or so. BE WELL!!! Peter had a tough time getting into Detroit, due to the weather. Had to get off the plane after boarding, then had his flight delayed, but made it into town in time for Mark and I to crawl downtown (just enough snow to really screw up the roads). We grabbed a quick burger and then went to the Red Wings v Black Hawks game. The Wings hada virtual explosion of offense, but the Black Hawks scored late to send the game to OT. In an extreme rarity, the Wings won the shoot out. When we met up, Mark handed me my Hanukah present (it has been a while since we saw each other), of an Entertainment book, with bookmarks of 77 MSA Detroit Caesars Discs, Topps Basketball upgrades (after virtually no hits to the upgrade list in over a year, it has been hit a few times already this year), including local hero Dave Debusschere, and a miscut. As soon as we met up with Peter, OBC handshakes resulted in my receiving 3 Jell-O shortprints, including the 63 DelGreco. Peter has been a major source of my Jell-O hits. Peter had not been in town for a few years, so it was especially great to see him again. Absent the snowy roads, it was a great nite of cards, companyand Mike Rich ================= Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2014 02:56:06 +0000 (UTC) To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com, joe8941@aol.com, From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: New Years Thanks to these OBC heroes Hello All, It=E2=99s been far too long since I have =E2=9Cpublished=E2=9D on the thanks server and for all those that have patiently waited to be acknowledged I truly do apologize. Another outstanding day at the mailbox, with two more remarkable OBC GREG MILLER hits me with his best shot as he punches out five cards from the 1951 Topps Ringside set, all of which are in better shape than anything I already have. Very nice Greg. VERY nice. Thanks! JAKE ELWELL starts off by raiding his old stamp collection and affixing 20-cents worth of postage in the form of plate block from 1965 or so... the 5-cent Alliance for Progress stamp. Philately aside, Jake pads this envelope with eleven hits, highlighted by a Vada Pinson Atlantic game card, four 65T Embossed, four Hi# 72T, and two more from the 1958 Topps Western Series. Great stuff! Thanks Jake!
