I had not been there much longer when I bumped into Larry Gersbach and he surprised me with a `49 Bowman card of Dutch Leonard and a `55 Bowman Bob Talbot for the Talbot binder. Nice Handshake Larry!!! As I was leaving I ran into Mike Mackie who slipped me (6) `72 Red Laughlin Great Feats cards to add to a newly posted set - Thanks Mike!!! At the game Spike Glidden passed a Chicago Bandits Female Softball Schedule my way for my 1st ever Softball sked, Sonny then passed me a 2013 Cubs skeds - I do like skeds - Thanks!!! I'm looking forward to the swap and another day at the tables tomorrow and hoping to see Jason, John Scott, Tom, Gary and of course Lynn - BE WELL!!! As I made it through to some of the tables I had not visited yet I saw some of the guys I had not yet seen until today including John Scott Gray and his wife Jo and Gary Mandell . Gary handed me a baker's dozen of shiny material that is much appreciated, we had a chance to sit and talk a bit as we pawed through cardboard - Thank Gary. George Vrechek and I spent a half hour or so chatting and he showed me a "new" variation on `56 Topps cards, to add emphasis to our discussion George handed me some variations with a T-218 Mecca back variation of Stanley Ketchell, a `47-66 Exhibit variation with Ted Kluzewski in a Pirates uniform and a `50 Bowman no trademark variation of Allie Clark. He also included (5) Ringside boxing (Satterfield, Savold, Gavilan, Zivic & DeJohn). Thanks so much George. Steve Rittenberg and I crossed paths and he passes along an American Carmel card of TIGER Sam Crawford. The ROAK action in person as displayed by Steve has been rampant the entire weekend. Thanks Steve!!! During the show Nick Pelletier called me on the phone to meet him at a dealers table as he had "bird-dogged" a card I was looking for. When I arrived he handed me the final card I needed for the `55 Topps set - Jackie Robinson. When I asked him how much he shook my hand - one heck of an OBC handshake. I was amazed and hard to believe - speechless. Thanks isn't enough. At the swap JSG the Younger hands me an envelope with a `54 Topps Al Kaline RC for my TIGER Binder - WOW!! With a start like that how could the swap get any better; well let me tell you how. Nick Pelletier walks up and tells me that he had discovered a `63 Topps variation and he wanted me to have it. In a penny sleeve I see a card of Lee Maye and I pull it out of the sleeve to find it covering up the `63 Topps Mickey Mantle card. Can we all say - WOW!!! Nick kills a set and brings one to "one and done" status, the guy is unstoppable and I am thrilled. Thanks Nick, you are too much!!! Wes Sheppard asks to see my want list and returns with a `34-36 Diamond star card of Bill Terry and he also shared a few Yunglings lagers with me which I also appreciated. Thanks friend!!! All night long the cardboard was flying and Steve Rittenberg orchestrated a deal where guys who wanted to look through his boxes had to also take my want list and pull cards for me. As I was walking around passing out stuff guys were passing stuff to me that they were pulling from Steve's dupes. I got stacks of OPC Hockey, Batman, Space Cards, Power for Peace, Sails & Rails, Isolation Booth, Freedom's War, Wild West and Jets & Rockets Spacemen. Steve also personally handed me an Allen & Ginter World Champions card, a `34-36 Batter-up of TIGER Tommy Bridges and a `51 Parhurst Hockey card of Jim Thomson. Finally, anybody who brought skeds along dropped some on me and I will be getting this portion of my collection organized in short order. It was a GREAT day and evening spent with friends, great conversation and fellowship - Thanks Fellas!!! BE WELL!!!! An outstanding envelope arrived this weekend, sent by our very cool collector buddy, Andy Cook. Andy has been a frequent contributor to my familytoad collection, and this latest offering is among the finest! A while ago, I thought to myself that I wasn't going to collect any more sets, choosing to focus on completing the ones I started and just do the HoF singles from as many sets I can. That's a big undertaking! Of course, I *have* ended up starting a couple sets since then! I also picked up a few type cards after saying I was going to de-emphasize my type card set (even though I really enjoy that aspect of collecting). So I've failed and generally reverted to collecting chaos. LOL! So, Andy helps the chaos with his envelope...the first card is a E90-1 American Caramel which assists towards the set I reluctantly started a few years ago. The second is my first E97 Briggs Lozenge card, Admiral Schlei!!! A type card, prewar, and caramel (E series), all things that I love , all at once!!!! Thank you Andy! You are a OBC HoFer in my book! Not often you can find a card of a Negro Leaguer from the period (though, on a minor league card) who did NOT end up playing in the Major Leagues Major buys - 1954 Kaline RC (via Sir Steve of Rittenberg), 1955 and 1956 Mays, 1955 Banks "upgrade", 1956 Koufax/Reese/Berra, almost 20 T205s, a ton of non-sports to various sets along with a ton of baseball Most interesting news - Found out Kurt Tourdot will be putting his house onthe market after the show and moving to the Raleigh area, so I was able tointroduce him to our local promoter at The National (I told Kurt to bring a ton of inventory with him when he moves) And now for something not-quite completely different... Another longer, stranger trip to the National this year. Kathy was originally planning to go but at (almost) the last minute wasn't feeling up to the trip, so I had a mad scramble trying to either find a roomie for the room Ihad reserved or find a roomie who had some space. As (bad) luck would haveit, Richard couldn't make it so it was my luck (good) that Steve had an extra bed and offered to share the room. Not sure if he'll make that same mistake again next year. I left out on my 800 mile drive from Durham about 8 AM Monday. The original(with Kathy) plan was to make it up towards Dayton and stay somewhere in that area Monday night. Without the additional required rest stops, I finally stopped for the night in Lebanon, IN, waving to Tom and Wes as I flew by Dayton, and passing such sights as Ninemile and Fivemile creek (realizing it wasn't an Indian name like ninna-milly creek once I got to fiva-milly creek) and "Jesus in the Hills Camp" (where "Camp" was on the second line of the sign, thus changing my favorite "are you serious" expression from "Shut the front door!" to "Jesus in the Hills!"), and picking up a copy of "Squirrel Proofing Your Home and Garden" in Centerville, IN. Good thing I didn't make the entire drive on Monday since I would have beaten Steve to the hotel. Caught up with Steve at the Convention Center on Tuesday afternoon and bought a total of 1 card: A Manu Ginobili jersey card for Kathy's collection. With many dealers not yet set up, it was a good couple hours to just walk through the CC and get the lay of the land. Picked up pizza for dinner with Steve and ate it back at the room while going through boxes of cards (mostlySteve's). Wednesday was going to be a long day of almost 12 hours at the show. As became the norm during the week, it was "lights out" somewhere after 12:30 AM (since that's when we couldn't keep our eyes open any longer) and would get up about 7 to make the 8:10 shuttle, which we caught most days. After finding there was a shuttle schedule "list" (which meant we left early at7:40 on Wednesday since the 8:10, 8:40, and 9:10 were already booked), we decided to put our names on "the list" for 8:10 for the rest of the week. The days at the show were such a blur that I don't remember what I picked upand when or where. Late dinner that night at Chili's with the early arrival OBCers (or is it Chai-Lai, as they say in Rochester?). Thursday another card crazy day. Dinner to be downtown at Chez Rittenberg's, which was a bit of a challenge for Nick and myself. Since Nick, Steve's cousin (and later Wes) were staying at the same Comfort Inn, Nick and I wentback a little early to get my car and park it at the train parking lot. Problem was, the 2.5 mile trip had traffic backed up for, well, about 2.5 miles in both directions due to construction and the grand opening of the outlets near the CC. So after taking about 30 minutes for the 10 minute trip tothe hotel, and seeing the single line of cards backed up almost the entirelength back, I decided to get on the freeway (against my better judgement of "never take an alternate route that you can't make a change on", such asa limited access road). So after the initial, quick 1/4 mile, we get stuckagain in traffic, finally getting to the parking lot about 45 minutes after we told the group to head down without us on the train and we would follow on a later train. Somehow we got to the restaurant only about 15 minutes after they did. After some beers, good food, and Mike Rich feigning to not understand how to take a picture of 4 lovely young ladies, we made it back to the hotel for another short night of rest. Friday many went to the game, but a few of us couldn't get enough cardboardand stayed at the show. After the show a few of us attended the Net54 dinner. A couple of boring speakers (but a couple of interesting ones) is the price one pays for free food and unlimited drinks. I think it was about 11 PM when Nick, Wes, and I finally called the shuttle back to the hotel. Saturday was the most "interesting" day for me. I got up and was in the bathroom when Kathy called and texted the message "Plese answer. I am in the hosp." I tried calling a couple of times and finally got an answer on her cell from the doctor, saying that they were getting ready to stitch her up and that Kathy would have to let me know what happened. About 3 hours later Igot the explanation that she had slipped while the refrigerator door and vegetable crisper drawer were open, falling INTO the refrigerator and onto the crisper drawer, breaking the drawer and cutting herself fairly seriouslyon the broken drawer. Luckily she was able to get 911 to come and take herto get her all sewn up and everything is fine now. She didn't want me to leave early but I was fairly mentally and physically beat, so I left the show a couple hours before it ended anyway. I got into our room to hear a drip, drip, drip, thinking the faucet was on. But when I looked, I see water dripping down from the ceiling onto the toilet seat. Went up from to let themknow and maintenance took care of it, or so we thought. Hung out for a few hours and then ordered and ran to pick up the pizza (with co-pilot/navigator Nick, this time not getting lost or stuck in traffic) and brought it back in time for the swap. Swap was a lot of fun as usual and included surprise appearances by Kurt and Jerry (more theirs than ours) and Cubs fan Ty and Tigers fan Spencer who ended up with a ton of RAOK from the group. I was able to pilfer a few cards from various traders' boxes andwas glad to see what I brought could help someone as well. Was also able to make a couple of trades with Shepard and Mackie to pick up a few more T205s. Another late, but great, evening! Sunday I woke up to The Return of the Drip. Went back down to the lobby andlet them know it was back. Not sure if Steve had to deal with in on Monday. It was a short day in Chicago for me as I only stayed for a couple of hours at the show before heading out. Out of time and out of money, but both well spent. The trip back wasn't too bad and thankfully uneventful. Onward to Cleveland next year for only a 9 hour drive! ================= Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2013 20:49:04 -0400 To: OBC Thanks From: Joel Freedman Subject: More 13 Run Pool Thanks...... I will try not to ramble. Nick Pelletier simply kills my 55 Topps set with the Koufax and Clemente rookies! He also added another few to boot. Steve Rittenberg gave me a bunch, including a 52 Topps #1 Pafko! He did include some 55 Topps as well, but basically made me start the 52 Topps set. Such a tough set, so I figured I would make a good run and finish the low numbers. I will likely focus on that from now on. Sal and Kent gave me someneeded 74 Topps. I am pretty sure about everyone gave me cardboard at somepoint or other, sorry about losing the list. I am not certain it would of been accurate anyways, because everyone contributed so much. However, I am certain I finally met T.J. Valachek, George Vrechek, Mike Mackie, and Gary Mandell who gave me a much needed OBC t-shirt. One that I think my arms won't rip out of. You guys are all hilarious when teasing me about that, it's funny, I know. Mark Talbot slipped me some cards, sneaking in a couple 55 Topps high numbers. Mac and Guru are always a treat, as are Bob Reed and Ron Perry. It was great hanging out with Gersch and Tom, fellow Ohio neighbors. I also had the profound pleasure of attending the net54 dinner with Mac, Nick, Taylor and Mike Rich. Speaking of Mike Rich, what a huge thanks I owe him. He literally unloaded about 4,000 cards on me at the swap. Wow. Wow. Wow. There are so many! I will be busy the rest of the year sorting these and updating my lists. I willsurely be starting some 60s Topps soon. Mike, again, I can't thank you enough. The Guru adds to the frenzy, and unloads stacks of 64's on me. It seems like everyone kept using the excuse of needing more room! Oh well, fine by me!These cards will have a great home in my collection, and what I don't use for my sets will be sent out to other members. Anyone needing 60s or 70s Topps, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. All in all, it was such a great time. My second National, and the OBC folks made it all possible. Especially NICK PELLETIER, who contributed so much, not to mention very cheap hotel rates at a very nice Comfort Inn. My National experience was fun, but not terribly noteworthy. I had some stuff for several OBC brethren, but I'm afraid my introvertedness bubbled to the top. I had forgotten my OBC hat and actually only was reminded of it when I saw one...the only one I saw in a day and a half. I was sprinting out the door to take delivery of an ebay win when I saw it, and by the time Igot back in, the hat (and the kind OBCer wearing it), was gone. Most of my time was spent wandering newer stuff with my son...and it was positively wonderful! Next time I hope to speak up a little more and be proactive in contacting folks rather than wait to be contacted. I did get everything I had in the mail the other day (some of the attendees--I tried, but simply couldn't hit your lists). And it looks like a lot ofguys extended the OBC handshake via the mail as well. In no particular order: TJ VALACAK sends a four pack of 64s, including a Fox/Killebrew combo card. LYNN MILLER sent a 10 pack of cards from 65, 66, 68, and 69 and included a Bob Gibson and former Eau Claire Bear Joe Torre. The most recent one arrived today from Kenn Pillion, who stuffed a 9-card NL All Star puzzle from the 1977 cloth sticker set into a single top loader. I claimed it off waivers uncontested. Now I'm going to have to dust off that set to add the * and ** variations. TANKS A slightly older envelope arrived from Geordie Calvert. He pulled a Jim Lonborg out of the fire - literally and sent it to recomplete my 1970 Topps set, after I discovered a collation error I made about a decade ago. THANKS Finally, while sifting through a pile of old bills and bank statements, I found an envelope from Gord Ellis that I probably never thanked him for. It contained a SCP Star Wars sticker of Darth Vader, who must've used the Dark Side of the force in getting me to neglect getting thanks out for a month or three. I have come to my senses fortunately. THANKS GORD!! My friends, I had a fantastic time early this month at the National, getting a chance to get together with several longtime good friends and trading partners! This note is not about the National or thanks that are due from that event (more on that later). Instead, today I am posting thanks for cardboard sent through the mail (one of the groups I am in uses trader points to maintain membership, and I want to make sure I get those thanks in with time to spare). So, without further ado, thanks go out to: Jason Christopherson missed me at the National (I have something set aside for you too, bythe way!) He sends a 1976 SSPC card of Nolan Ryan and Catfish Hunter thatbrings me down to an even dozen to finish that set (41, 167, 168, 351, 380, 392, 403, 409, 433, 453, 494, 589) =96 thanks for the big hit Jason! Richard Dingman was nice enough to send me a 1950 Bowman variation of Preston Ward =96 thanks for sending a hit for one of my favorite sets! Lynn Miller sends a great mix of cards that range from second set hits to 78 and 73 Topps to two great 1962 Topps variations! Nice stuff Lynn! Rich Niessen sends 49 great hits to eight sets that cannot be named, but can be appreciated! Thanks Rich! John Stamper sends three very nice cards my way, starting off with a Topps Stand-Up of Floyd Robinson (this one still has the yellow top=96 so that=92s what they look like attached!) Next are two Kellogg=92s =96 one from 1970 and a 1972 All-Time Greats Tris Speaker (leaving just 6, some guy named Ruth, to finish the set)! Thanks for the hits John! Mark Talbot sends three cards of my wife=92s favorite player, but also does me a solid with a 1939 Playball of Syl Johnson and a 34 Diamond Star of Dixie Walker! Two happy people here Mark =96 thanks! George Vrechek sends a nice mix of rarely seen cardboard, with two 1968 Milton Bradley variations, a 54 Bowman back variation, and three 54 Bowman upgrades (sharp corners =96 very rare in this household!) It was great seeing you George =96 thanks for thewonderful cardboard! Hearing about other OBC guys who got cards from their WL 4. Getting cards from OBC guys for your WL 3. Helping OBC community through auctions/donations/encouragement 2. Sending cards to OBC guys for their WL 1. Meeting and spending time with OBC guys in person!! Well I got the #1 pleasure last night when Rick Lyons and his cool family made their way down the highway and were nearby Ridgefield in the early evening. We met at BWW (Buffalo Wild Wings) for some dinner, chatting and watching sports on TV...awesome!!!! After about 90 minutes of eating wings and drinking iced tea, I dragged Rick back to my house while Ross and Roni retreated to their hotel. We talked for about 2 more hours and I was able to show off some of the dusty familytoad collection. Some of those cards haven't been out of the boxes in awhile! Rick is just a great guy and I really enjoy spending time with him. Time always goes by too fast during OBC Live events, regrettably. I drove Rick back to his hotel around midnight, pleased for our friendship and not even noticing that I was still awake at "turning into a pumpkin" time! Rick does a fine OBC handshake as well, this time a trio of terrific 52T's made it into my collection, scratching off three more to the Topps Quest!!! All of you are aware of my Navy career and my desire to collect cards from sets with that theme. And I quote from Grant's note; "Here's the story - when I was a lad about 10 or so (1960-1961?) my Dad took me down to the harbour to visit the Coral Sea. Justre-commissioned I think(my note, it was re-recommissioned in Jan 1960).They had to take the antennas down to get under the Lion's Gate Bridge.I was so impressed I went out with my allowance & bought the model kit - this card came with it. It belongs in your Navy collection." Grant bought a Revell kit (we all know these) and this was a Limited Edition of 24 Historic Collectors' Cards Commemorating the Development of Naval Flight. The Coral Sea was a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier with a long distinquished service. Now that young lad 53 years ago had no inkling that card would make an old sailor very happy one day by relaying what it meant to himat an early age and what a keepsake it was as something shared with his Dad and yet happily passing it on. Rest assured my good friend it will be as cherished here in it's final resting place.
