If you haven't had opportunity to experience the hospitality Of Dave Fallen you are missing a treat! I drove up yesterday (200 miles) see Dave and his wonderful wife Jan before attending the Seattle Area card show ...that is big news for Pac NW collectors. Its only twice a year, and in comparison very small but its well worth the trip! Dave and Jan took me to a terrific Thai restaurant last night, arranged the guest quarters , cooked me breakfast this AM and Dave drove back south to Shoreline and the card show. Wonderful offerings there, solid collector base and good dudes with cool cardboard...you know things we all love! Back in Arlington Dave and I have spent several hours in the man cave since yesterday, he's got an awesome Seattle-centric collection!! I have learned a lot from Dave already, I just need to try and resist the temptation to join in the Zeenut, Obak and Popcorn games. (well, it doesn't sound too bad actually ;)) Dave also generously added to my 52 Topps, my 51 Bowmans and slipped a terrific E90-1 American Caramel into the "OBC Handshake"!! Thank you Dave!!! Then even more fun and entertainment, as a nearby casino offered to take all of our baseball card money. Not this time Angel of the Winds...not this time! I made enough on a couple blackjack hands to buy even more cards tomorrow! I even got a new coffee mug for joining their Totem club! How great is that, Diamanti?!?! Now the weekend isn't over, as tomorrow we meet Rick Lyons for a pre-show breakfast and another forage across the card show floor! I'm in a bit of euphoria , the healing power of OBC and cardboard. This weekend was the card show hosted by the Washington State Sports Collectors Association. BRIAN LINDLOLME showed up Friday afternoon for a two-day stay. For me it was like an in-home vacation. We had a great Friday we ate at a local Thai restaurant which had great food. Spent most of the rest of the evening sitting in my man-cave talking baseball and looking at my meager card collection. Saturday we hit the WSSCA show the minute the doors opened. I made a great haul that day: 14 Seattle Zeenuts, 4 Seattle and 4 non-Seattle Obaks, 1 Obak coupon, 5 Seattle Popcorn cards, my first Fan Craze, 3 Topps Wings and 3 misc. nonsports cards, and a vintage PC team photo. Three of the popcorn cards turned out to be dups (I'll live), and the Topps Wings brings me down to 5 to complete the set. In the evening we retired to a local casino and had dinner. After dinner, Brian proceeded to break the bank at the blackjack table. At least he earned enough to purchase an extra card or two at Sunday's show. Home again to the man-cave and more baseball talk. Brian also gifted me with FIVE T-206's. Wow Brian, can you come again next weekend? Saturday Morning Brian and I met up with RICK LYONS for breakfast at the local IHOP. Rick hit me with 13 nonsports cards, and a Mariner's nodder. We then caravaned to the WSSCA show. On the second day I scored two more vintage PC trade cards, and something I've wanted for a long time: a vintage Seattle Rainiers felt pennant! All-in-all it was a fabulous weekend with great company! I can't wait for the next show. Thanks Brian and Rick for you wonderful generosity! -Dave Fallen ================= To: Date: Mon, 03 Jun 2013 00:01:44 -0400 From: "Matt Yudt" Subject: Sunday thanks - 2 Johns and a Brain 3 wonderful envelopes awaited me at home after my short trip to Clearwater late last week. Without trying to give Peter a heart attack, maybe I should not mention this is a rare green back version. Mark Talbot joined another buddy of mine and I to go a Tigers game this week. StubHub has some tremendous deals. Week day games, upper deck tickets have routinely been $6 a ticket, with no further fees or surcharges this season. Our seats were upper deck, around 3rd base, row 12. Fine seats, andwe parked for free. Cheap nite, and a well pitched game, the Tigers lost in the 9th. Mark handed me a couple of miscut cards and yet another 1967 Laughlin WS card. Mark has made tremendous progress on my set of these. A last note, my comment about the rare green back version was a joke. The Stancraft cards are decks of playing cards, with pictures of FB players on them and pictures of the various team helmets on the back. You see, Brian thought his Detroit Red Wings could dismantle the President's Trohy-winning Blackhawks this year...nay, nay, I say. So clear across the Rockies from Washington state comes a beauty of a T205...Fred Merkle! Ofcourse, you can all make your boner jokes now, I'll wait until you are done. Childish, I tell you, childish. As you know, Merkle's play, or lack thereof, resulted in the Cubs last World Series triumph. We've been the victims of Merkle-like events ever since. A goat in 1945, a black cat in 1969, a roller under a Bull in 1984, and the ultimate Bartman boner of 2003. So as Cub fans, we all like to make fun of poor Fred and overlook our own ineptitudes. There's even a pub outside Wrigley called Merkle's that serves the Bonehead Burger. So, out of respect for poor Fred, I'll let the immature needling of a once-proud Giant come to rest and simply thank Brian for a great card! They contacted some OBC friendly Midwest dealers who came and set up. These included William Chappell, JD Heckathorn, Wayne Johnson, Pat from Kevin Savage Cards, Danny Phillips, Mark Smith and Mike Sandles among the dealers present. OBCers inattendance were Ron Perry, Mark Talbot and myself, with Earl Kilborne expected tomorrow. Mark handed me a top loader with a pair of 1956 Gum Adventure cards and my first 2 Pan Handle Scrap Champion Women Swimmers. These were significant, as I was only able to pick up about 25 hits at the show. Of those, 2 more were type cards (a boxing card and a 1906 Fan Craze), my 2nd 1939 Goudey Premium R303-B, my 2nd and 3rd E-101. That means 5 of the 25cards were not even on sets I was working on - yet. 19 of the 25 hits were prewar, with key hits to 1939 and 1940 Playball, getting those 2 sets down to 10 & 25, respectively, and a Tattoo Orbit card. The 25 pick-ups covered 18 different sets, with the only set getting more than 2 hits, being the1940 Playball. Kind of depressing that I can attend a show with those quality of dealers and only come away with 25 hits. I have tried to not collect non-sports or dupe sets. I am at a loss for trying to determine what sets I can legitimately try and collect. Considering that I am already working on every set out there (or so I am told), it makes it quite tough. Thanks again to Mark and Ron for making the show more worthwhile by their OBC gift and companionship.
