And Rick always has cardboard too, this time a 52 Topps Phillie, Andy Seminick. Ok, he wasn't pictured as a Phillie in this card, but to me he will always be a Whiz Kid! Thank you Rick, you are awesome and I eagerly await our next visit, buddy! Swedish Chef, Humorist and Host Dave Fallen really treated me good...just like he and his dear wife Jan did back in June. A pair of 52 Topps in nicer shape than most of my collection were overshadowed by his generosity and friendship all weekend. That makes 4 nights at Chez Fallen this year , which must have qualified me for the loyalty program as the complimentary room came with coffee, bacon , waffles, candy , pie, shuttle service, free wi-fi and pleasant conversation in copious amounts! Then I wikipediaed him - he was a double Wally Pipp. In 1956 he was the Colts' starter until he broke his leg -- and was replaced by a young Johnny Unitas. Ouch. He bounced around the league a little and ended up with the Vikings, for whom he started their very first game, during which he was yanked and replaced by rookie Fran Tarkenton. PoorGeorge. He retired from football and returned to his home in Oregon where he passed away in 1998. This is why I like sets with bios. My friends, The last two months have been very busy at Ferris, as we just voted to make a change in department structure from department heads to department chairs. I was the chair of the committee that laid out the procedures for carrying out the election and transfer of authority (I figured, correctly, that being chair of the selection committee would guarantee that I was not selected!) On top of those duties, I was elected chair of the college=92s Curriculum Committee, so any changes in majors, minors or courses has to cross my desk=85. I need a bigger desk. I am also going up for promotion to Full Professor, so getting that packet together has taken some time. That being said, I am a couple of months behind in getting much deserved thank yous to the appropriate people. First off, thanks to all the wonderful people who I was able to swap greetings and cardboard with at the National this year. My record keeping was precise, but my keeping of my record keeping not so much (I have a list placed in a book somewhere that I was hoping to find, but have not located as of yet). The National is always a highlight of any year in which I can attend, and on top of things my wife had a great time. She has real plans to try and organize some wife and girlfriend events for next year!) It was nice meeting up with Nick Pelletier, Gary, and Ron Perry along the way. I didn't make any major purchases (a '63 Topps Yogi Berra was my largest single purchase) but made some decent headway on my 1970s Kelloggs sets as well as some recently added Topps Basketball sets. Also completed my 1974 Topps checklists. Oh, and echoing off Gary's comments concerning 51 Topps Blue backs, I tripled the size of my collection of that set - going from one cardto three. So I guess I'm officially collecting that one now. Nick greeted me with a three pack of 51 Topps Red backs which pushes me pretty close to half the set although I didn't go back and count. I was about 9 then. Eddie Bressoud came over close by and talked to somebody in the stands for a bit. I was amazed that a real live ballplayer would do that. I knew the Red Sox lineup by heart so I knew who he was. He just seemed larger than life to me and yet he laughed and talked like a regular guy.
