Fellas -- Matt Yudt totally surprised me today with a sweet T205 Sovereign of Edward Abbaticchio! That's two Sovereigns this week from OBCers...wow! Abbaticcio is a rather interesting character in the T205/T206 era, as he is credited with being the inventor of the spiral punt that everyone uses today. He played football for Latrobe as a pretty successful kicker at the turnof the century, then found his way to baseball by 1897 with the Phillies. The back of his card says he has "decided to go into business for himself." I guess Latrobe, PA wanted him back after his time with the Pirates in the World Series and a subsequent trade to Brooklyn, as he ended up opening a hotel there. Looking for a subject line to express the box of cards from Wes, just kept it simple. He emailed me a week ago or so to warn that my 1970-minus-three card, Johnny Bench, was on his way, and that he had a few friends along for the ride. Apparently over 50 is a few to this fine gentleman. 24 hits alone from 59 - which I will have to make a want-list from a need-list at this point. Another 10 or so from 62, a similar stack from 63, and you get the point. In addition to the Bench, which is so close to a set-killer (Need the Ryan and Rose from 70 yet) - he sent a card which I am adding to my OBC hall of fame - right up there with the Sewer find, the fire cards, the tattered Koufax and the 60 Mantle, is an almost perfectly rounded 1960 Casey Stengel. At the Culver City show, Josh noticed my "near mint" feet of 1951 Topps Jimmy Collins, and mentioned that he had a Jimmy Collins bodywith no feet. Well, Jimmy collins has now been reunited ... and you can see how the card looks now that it is back together. Awesome Josh - I love rebuilding these cards to recover treasures from the past. Now I'm done to one strange collecting needs - the feet of Mr. Walter Johson from that same set ... Ron Perry allowed me to snag up a TIGER playoff ticket and we spent a nice afternoon at the ballpark. It was a loss to the A's but the local heroes would come back to take it to the next level only to fall to the BoBox. Ron passed along some fresh tomatoes from his garden. Thanks for the opportunityto catch a playoff game and some good eats!!! Patrick Prickett finds a `36 Goudey 4 in 1 TIGER card w/Goose Goslin and sends it my way. Today Joe arrived in Detroit and after he spent the day at General Dynamics he was free to meet up with Mike Rich and I for a trip to the Joe Lewis Arena to attend the Red Wings vs. Senators game. We met up at the local Wednesday show where my favorite dealer Harold Olenick was set up and we all picked up some treasures. I got some okay deals to add to the dupe box and picked up a Ziploc Baseball set and some hits to my USFL Football set. So we got out of there and made our way downtown. We got to the Joe and to our seats with a half hour to spare so we had plenty of time to chew the fat. It was a very good thing that we were enjoying each others company because the game left something to be desired unless of course you are an Ottawa fan. The 6 to 1 score pretty much tells the whole story as Detroit was down 3 - 0 before we knew it and the Wings had lifted starter Jimmy Howard from his net-minding duties. It was clear that the hometown heroes and their fans were in for a long night. Mike had called ahead and spoke to some folks at the Joe to let them know that we were attending the game with a veteran from out of town and they made arrangements to meet us at our seats and hand over a "welcome package" to Joe. The Wings organization is known for doing nice things for our service men and women and this was a fine example of that - I could tell that Joe appreciated the gesture. I thought it was pretty cool myself. We managed to stick it out and not leave with the masses who began leaving shortly after the 3rd period began when the Senators scored yet again. It may not have been the best option. On the way back we decided to take the People Mover above ground trams back to the area known as Greektown where we had parked Mike's car. I've been riding the People Mover since it opened in 1987 and I have never experienced the delay we experienced tonight. A couple stops away from the Joe the tram just stopped and we were stuck there for 15 - 20 minutes, not a long time but it seemed like forever in a sardine like packed public transit system that normally stops 10 - 15 seconds at each stop and keeps on moving. Eventually we made it to the car and on back to the Elks club where the Wednesday show is held. Through it all it was still enjoyable to spend the time with friends. The cardboard was flying as is always the case when OBC'er get together and Mike continues to build the `68 Topps poster set by slipping me a Dean Chance poster and Joe hands over (6) `76 Zip'z Baseball discs that will be added to the few that I already have and yet another set will be added to the list. Joe included Candelaria, Geronimo, Griffey, Monday, Montefusco and Rudi for the new back variation to one of my favorite "oddball" issues the MSA Discs of `76 & `77. Thanks to Mike & Joe for an enjoyable evening and some additions to the collection. More to come in the coming days as Joe will be in town till Nov. 1 - BE WELL!!!!
