FOOT was out in force, as Mike and I were joined by Earl Kilborne, Ron Perry and MArk Talbot. New Year's FOOT handshakes resultedin some miscuts from Earl, a miscut, some UV of my HOMer, Willie Horton, a1984-85 Comets Soccer set and my first OBC hit ever to my 1938-39 SportingEvent & Star set, all from Mike Mroz; miscuts anda pair of 1967 Laughkin World Series cards from Mark Talbot, as well as a stack of higher grade cards for a swap I need with a non OBCer; and last, but vertainly not least, the final pair of 1969 Topps Stamps I need for my set outside of albums, along with the last 2 albums I needed for both a set with no stamps and a set with stamps, along with a 1975 Twinkee from Ron Perry. I have now posted the 40 or so 69 Topps Stamps I need to complete the set in and outside of the stamp albums. I had also arranged to meet up with a non-OBCer to do a swap, whiuch netted me 2 complete sets of 1993 Slurpee (7/11) cups (anyone have a 1992 set to swap for a 1993 set???) and the final 2 1966 Lions Coke caps on my list. So even without the show, I finished multiple sets and had hits to others. The show itself was also great as I hits to multiple MSA disc sets from 1976 & 1977, a few Bazooka cards, a pair of E254 Colgan Chips, a Boxing Exhibit, a few 1969 Oakland A's Andersen cards, including erh Campaneris variation, and the 2 HUGE hits, a 1948 Leaf FB shortprint and a 1962 Post Canadian BB 15c Mantle variation. OBC World, I have the pleasure of opening my first OBC package of 2013, and since I just picked it up this evening...let's open it together! I haven't peeled the envelope yet. Let's start with the outside before we get any further. The Ted Williams commemorative stamp on the upper right portion was one of my first clues, but the name Don Rice on the left is my real assurance thatthis is going to be a gem! The envelope is a small standard, slightly thicker than a normal letter might be, so Don cautiously included a 20cent extra postage with a picture of George Washington on it. Likely the inspiration to the name of the state I live in, ya think. OK, ok...I'll open it...be right with you.... Here we go...Rip...small yellow post-it note covering one side of a card-saver. Note says " Brian- Found a couple, Happy New Year! Don Rice-OBC" (Scans available upon request) I see a 45 degree angle "pennant" in the upper right of the first card, says Orioles. I now know its a 66. That team was loaded with stars...I cannot wait! Behind that card, peering out looks like the back of a 1952 Topps!! Whoot! Ok, ok...I'll dig in. Whoot again, as I slide the cards to reveal HOFer Frank Robinson!!!! What agreat card! 66T #310 is in the house! Then, another small yellow post-it note appears attached to the 52T. Partially concealing the Dale Mitchell, this note says " Hey ! No fair, you're not supposed to look at the back :)" Scans of this post-it also available upon request. I peel back the post-it to see a small amount of mold or MOOF , I smell the card and determine that it's 60 years old and I love it!!! Nothing but cardboard on the back of the second 1952 Topps . Yes, #161 Bud Byerly joins the other guys in this awesome, news-breaking envelope! Don, this was fun! Thanks so much buddy! I received a 3-pack from Ron Perry: three 1963 Posts - Jim Landis, Felix Mantilla, and Gordy Coleman. Gordy Coleman was one of my childhood favorites. Gordy played for the Seattle Rainiers in 1960 and I got to watch him play several times. My brother and I lived about 2 miles from Sick's Seattle Stadium. We would walk to the stadium and pay 25 cents each to sit in the left field bleachers. We could have taken the bus to the game, but it was 15 cents each way. Heck, for 30 cents we could buy a box of popcorn and a large coke. The popcorn also came with a 2" x 3" black and white card of a Seattle player. As I have said before, my brother and I threw our cards on the ground as did most other fans, after all they weren't "real" baseball cards! Sadly, Gordy was never featured on a Seattle popcorn card. Gordy split the season between Seattle and Cincinnati. In 93 games for the Rainiers, Gordie batted .324 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI's. You can see why I liked him! Thanks Ron, for the cards and for releasing a flood of memories! -Dave Fallen ================= Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2013 21:49:57 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "ecexpress1" Subject: Belated thanks Long-overdue thanks (I've been saying those words a lot lately) go out to two fine OBCers for their thoughtfulness over the last few weeks: TAYLOR SCHOCK sent two 47-66 Exhibits to shorten that rarely-hit wantlist along with a couple of grrrrreat Kellogg's cards. I figure the odds of this happening are 609-to-1. I think I better head to Vegas right now and show Lynn Miller my "trusty" dice system. While some of these may not be classic "oddballs", they are definitely items you don't see very often. Mike starts with one hit to each of three separate mid-1960s hockey sets. His note then mentions that "the prewars are low grade, but thought you would appreciate them anyway." Uh, did I hear the word "/prewar/?" Well, yeah, I'd appreciate them! Mike includes a 1933 Goudy and two 1939 Play Balls, both of which just happen to be /high numbers/. The puffy is rounded out by four Coke caps. Now understand that I have a somewhat advanced cap collection, so hits can be difficult. But there are still a few early sets that I don't have any caps from. One of those /was /the 1964 Chargers set, and I now have three thanks to Mike. Time to add a complete listing of that set to my want list. Finally, there is an obscure 1963 Chargers Coke set. Well, the year is off to a good start, card-wise. I've alreadyreceived cards in my own hands and it's only January! Plus, I've managed to get off a few sniper hits on some of my friends' lists. I got three envelopes--meaning my sister-in-law got the mail from our renters and delivered it to the woman who was flying here to check out teaching in Nicaragua for next year and was kind enough to bring them with! Not a simple process, but SO worth it! MIKE MROZ hammered the YELLOW Star Wars series with nine great hits, leaving that sub-set (is that how we count those?) with a measly 3. As promised, this means I'm adding a goal for 2013: finish the Yellows! Thanks, Mike. That was a great surprise. The GURU, LARRY TIPTON, heard about the damage Kent Goto did to my '58 Topps and decided to get in on the action himself (so he explained in his note). Great damage it was, with fourteen new cards added to my list! Includedwere such familiar names as Mickey Vernon, Bob Boyd and Walt Moryn. This set is the leading contender to become my second 1950's WANT list. Thank you, my friend. Great cards! Finally, the Brothers NEWMAN, JEFF and MIKE, send me two beautiful cads, ofwhom Jeff reports these were two of his childhood heroes. First is a 1961Gil Hodges in great condition; second is a 1973 Willie Mays in great Tipton condition (more card than not card on the front)! These are AWESOME! I'm a big Willie Mays fan, and that was a great hit to a dwindling set, whichnow stands at 40 to go. Thanks a ton, guys! I also heard that an envelope arrived for our visitor just after she left the States. I'm sad it didn't come along, as I know it's a great surprise (I've been warned) and I'm really looking forward to getting it. But that will be a little while. Still, it's good to have things to look forward to. Blessings on you, Mike, Larry, Jeff and Mike! And blessings on all you OBCers out there. Peace and joy, Mike R-W ================= To: "obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com" Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2013 23:16:25 -0500 From: Bob Reed Subject: Recent Incomings. January (and some December) incomings to Connecticut: John Stamper sends a couple of 1971 NY Met oddballs. A Tom Seaver coin anda Super Tommie Agee. He also included almost 100 unmentionables that knocked off a whopping 7 sets! Thanks John! Wes Shepard knocks off a 1953 Bio variation and from my 1975 second set, the RBI leaders featuring Johnny Bench. Thanks Wes! Bob Donaldson hits the 1970 Kellogg's football set that I started at the last National. His 6 cards included Sonny Jurgenson, Merlin Olsen, and Calvin Hill. Thanks Bob! Richard Labs helps knock decrease some football sets knocking off 4 to a couple of Philadelphia sets and a Jimmy Hill for the 1962 Topps set. Thanks Richard! Found an envelope while cleaning the desk from Larry Tipton. Larry sends 3 footballers from the Philadelphia sets including a nice looking Don Perkins card. Thank Guru and sorry for the lateness of the thanks. Thanks guys! -Bob R. ================= Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2013 20:51:42 -0800 (PST) To: "OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com" From: Edward Watts Subject: Thanks to Lynn Miller Thanks go out to Lynn Miller, who sent a great 9-pack of cards. They include a 1952T Clint Hartnung, 2 1957 T, 4 1958 Topps cards (including Moe Drabowksy), a 1959 T card of Colavito's great catch (which it does not give adate for), and a 1960 T hit. The greatest card of the lot was a 1957 T that a young child used as a teething ring (I can tell because the teeth are not very far apart). I have a 1972 T Royals team card that a rat apparently chewed and a 1984 F Pete Rose that my pet guinea pig chewed, but this is my first card with a human bite on it. This is an awesome card. Thanks Lynn! Ed Watts
