And it was the usual "old friends" conversation on catching up with our lives, family, work, collecting, etc. What I found most interesting was Hitz's consultation with TaylorMade on the creation of their new "Ghost Putter". Here's a link: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/2010-06-10-taylormade-ghost-putter_N.htm And he doesn't seek a fee for this, only requests they send him a set of clubs, which they have. Hitz also recounted the immense fun of attending his first National. He gave me some "newbie" pointer in preparation for my first visit one of these years, maybe next year in Chicago I hope. Of course Hitz presented me with a couple of really great cards. Since I had to work, it was an early evening meeting at their hotel. They were here in 2009 for a baseball tournament their son Ross was in who was I think16 at the time. Watched a game and was impressed with his skills (and size). Rick had told me then Ross aspired to be a major leaguer. So naturally I wanted to know what the progress was and did we have a future HOFer in our midst. Ross graduated HS and was offered a number of scholarships in both baseball and football. Nice! Finally settled on baseball and was accepted at a program but after getting to school the program underwent major changes and long story short Ross has decided not to go forward with his baseball dream and become a doctor (he was also an honor student). Not bad either. Turns out though he's working while going to collegeat a golf course and seems the club pro has seen his prowess on the course where he can drive the ball 350+ yards. Maybe there's some sports future there, remains to be seen. Anyway Rich and Rick and Ronnie and I chatted for a couple of hours while watching the Falcons do in the Broncos (Ronnie's team unfortunately). And of course there was the exchange of some old cardboard. Rick found me a tough vintage Hank in a 1967 OPC Paper Insert. Hey I thought it was his birthday, not mine, Woo Hoo! Gotta love those TV cards. When I was in grade school around 1968 a girl in my class named Sarah Felde brought me a bunch of her brothers old baseball cards. There were some 55 Bowman's in there and I thought they were the oddest cards ever. Yes, it's time again for me to extend thanks to those who sent me cards and then PATIENTLY waited until I could get my hands on them!! Hitting my lists is an exercise in delayed gratification, but I want you to know that you guys are so great to keep firing me cards, even way down here! First up is Andy Cook, who kept encouraging people to send him their '67 lists. Since I'm a very light trader these days, I don't tend to respond to anyone's Waiver offers, but after the third time, he convinced me. Sure enough, Andy blasts 15 off that set, including Gene Mauch, Lou Clinton, and a very young and slender Woody Fryman! Muchas Next is Erik Greenwood, who hits 4 lists: 1959, 1966, 1967 and 1971 Topps. I particularly enjoyed the 59's, with both Mudcat Grant and Rocky Bridges, the latter wtih his cheek about to explode from chaw. Much appreciated, Erik! Kent Goto takes aim at my 1969 Topps set, delivering RBI Leaders with McCovey, Santo (RIP), and Billy Williams, WS Game 4 (Tigers Score 10!), and 4th Series Checklist with Drysdale. Nice! Fellow Mike, Mike Jackson, shows special generosity because I know I've never hit his lists. Mike sent two 1961 Topps, Moryn and Cicotte, the latter of which was joining his 4th team in 4 seasons, and a '62 topps Sawatski. Thanks, Mike! That was a great random act of generosity! Peter Mead delivers a TCP, with two 1972 Topps including Leo the Lip and Reds Rookies, and a 1973 of Milt May. Sweet! Finally, Nick Pelletier gets revenge for a cheapshot I took at him: five 1960's and eleven 1965s! Among the 60's were Yank Ralph Terry, Larry Sherry (tell me he didn't get made fun of!), and Giants CL; the 65's had AL Pitching Leaders, Orioles rookies, and future great hitting coach (though never great player) Charlie Lau! Awesome, Nick! I've got one more thank you to write, but it's my Sewer Collection treasure, so that will require it's own message--I wouldn't want to get that on any of my other cards! Nick, Peter, Mike, Kent, Erik, and Andy, thanks, fellas! I don't get to enjoy collecting like I used to, but when I get to sort a few cards and update a few checklists, it really cheers me up. Bless you guys! Peace and Joy, Mike R-W ================= Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2012 06:05:34 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: mikerw7@gmail.com Subject: Sewage Flows South! In case anyone was wondering just how long the famous/notorious Sewer Find from Nationals of '012 would take to reach Nicaragua=97September Okay, I have to say that much like all of you, I was amazed/appalled at my GGS Gem Mint 1963 Topps Ken Aspromonte! Mr. Aspromonte looks just fine in his big picture, but the small pic in the cirle is, well, disappearing. Perhaps "deteriorating" is a better word? Perhaps "Being eaten by Lord-knows-what" is the most accurate. I will predict that this card will only be in my collection for a few years, though I'll need a little time to determine how quickly it's disintegrating. I, for one, am VERY grateful that it's slabbed, as I do not want whatever is in there coming out!! Since I've read about all of your Sewer Find gifts, I opened this envelope with a smile=97and then was stunned. Because before I saw the above Gem Mint, I saw a familiar face: Hank Aaron on his '58 Sport Magazine All Star card, i.e. 1958 Topps #488. My smile came back much bigger than before when I could move again! Larry, what a great I also got two more cards in this envelope: Rich Allen and Mack Jones 1970 Scratch Offs. Awesome! Allen is done scratched, but Jones is still intact, so I'm either up to four on this set=97or else I'm ready to challenge someone to a game with my Jones! Anyone? Guru, I gotta tell you, I loved reading everyone's description of their Graded and Slabbed Sewer Finds. I was really hoping you had included me in the fun. I wasn't expecting such illustrious company with a card from the sewer, but I really like the message that the highest and lowest can travel together and be envelope companions--though I'm certain Hank was grateful Ken was sealed up, too! God bless you, Larry, and blessings on everyone in OBC! Thanks for keeping me in your club! Posted by: _"mikerw7@gmail.com" mikerw7 _ In case anyone was wondering just how long the famous/notorious Sewer Find from Nationals of '012 would take to reach Nicaragua=E2=94September Okay, I have to say that much like all of you, I was amazed/appalled at my GGS Gem Mint 1963 Topps Ken Aspromonte! Since I've read about all of your Sewer Find gifts, I opened this envelope with a smile=E2=94and then was stunned. Awesome! Allen is done scratched, but Jones is still intact, so I'm either up to four on this set=E2=94or else I'm ready to challenge someone to a game with my Jones! Anyone? Guru, I gotta tell you, I loved reading everyone's description of their Graded and Slabbed Sewer Finds. I was really hoping you had included me in the fun. I wasn't expecting such illustrious company with a card from the sewer, but I really like the message that the highest and lowest can travel together and be envelope companions--lowest can tra certain Hank was grateful Ken was sealed up, too! God bless you, Larry, and blessings on everyone in OBC! Thanks for keeping me in your club! I haven=E2=99t had much time for the hobby but that has not stopped my fine friends in this group from sending out cardboard. I would like to thank the following for their continued generosity: Bob Bannon allows me to claim a couple =E2=9Cwaiver wire=E2=9D claimsfrom the `52 Bowman set with =E2=9CThe Cat=E2=9D =E2=93 Harry Brecheen and =E2=9CScooter=E2=9D =E2=93 Phil Rizzuto. This set is getting closer and closer so nabbing a couple on the =E2=9Cwaivers=E2=9Din unusual but certainly appreciated =E2=93 Thanks Bob!!! Peter Mead continues our =E2=9Cnever-ending trade=E2=9D that started over a decade ago with a `50 Calahan (O=E2=99Roarke), a `51 Berk Ross (Woodling) and a `51 Topps Blue back (Johnson). Peter always sends out the =E2=9Coddball=E2=9D stuff that I really enjoy =E2=93 Thanks so much for these very cool items Peter!!! Kevin Martens sends (26) hometown heroes, that being TIGER cards my way. All are very shiny but still appreciated and deserve recognition. Thanks Kevin!!! Taylor Schock places a couple pieces of cardboard that are older than both of us in the mail with a Southeastern Michigan address. The cards in question included a `41 Uncle Sam and a `36 G-men Heroes of the Law card to hit acouple sets that do not see too much action =E2=93 Thanks Taylor. John Stamper connects with a trio of Non-Sport cards from the `50=E2=99sincluding a World on Wheels and a couple Scoops cards. I like reading these cards; they just don=E2=99t make them like this now a day. Thanks John!!! Matt Yudts assaults the TOP 10 list with a `58 Topps Bill Tuttle Yellow Name variation to add to the collection. The SCP is one I=E2=99ve been searching for quite some time. Thanks Matt!!! I hope to get some more time today to actually get some cardboard out to these and other fine traders that have been so kind to me. Regardless it was high time to thanks these guys =E2=93 SO THANKS!!! BE WELL!!! REGARDS ------------------ MARK ================= Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2012 14:35:41 -0400 To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Larry Tipton Subject: "schocked" Taylor Schock sent me two 1955 Red Man cards Bob Porterfield and Jim Hegan.Nice cards Taylor, THANKS! ================= Date: Mon, 01 Oct 2012 05:56:21 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: mikerw7@gmail.com Subject: Semi-Annual Thanks from MR-W Part TWO Hey, Guys! I thought I had sent all my thanks--then discovered that I have a whole cache of cards for which--I think--I have not expressed my gratitude. There is a small possibility that I've already sent the thanks for these guys, but if so, I didn't record it for ANY of them, which would be unusually disorganized, even for me. Before I get to the thanks, it might help you to understand that all my mail still goes to the US, where our property is now rented, and I have that mail picked up by a sister-in-law, who holds it for me until I visit the States--except that doesn't always work. And when it does, sometimes we don't have a good internet connection at home--or any internet connection--and in this case I think I was off for a few weeks and then it fell off my to-do's (there are a few other things vying for my attention down here). The fun part is, I also never got these recorded on my wantlists, so it's like getting them all over again, watching those lists go down! Yay! Kent Goto sends a Single Card Pleasure of a beautful Philadelphia A's Harry Bird from 1953 Topps. When I say beautiful, I'm not focusing on condition--it's got a few creases and a dent on his throat; I doubt Guru would give it a 4--but on the fact that I had all of 12 cards from that set and this makes it a baker's dozen! Huge percentage increase here! Thanks, Kent! Next up, Mac Wubben knows my love of the Bowman sets, and delivered a Triple Card Pleasure of 55's, Talbot, Gromek, and, well, Roger Bowman himself, making that Bowman squared, I think. Mac, great shots! When I finally put the 54's to bed (three and holding for a while now) I need to decide if I'm going after 55's next. Josh Levine hits me with a (here goes) Sextuple Card Pleasure: Two 1971 Topps bookending a 73 Topps and three 58's. I'm highly amused to know there was a minor league player of the year card--with a pic of the trophy. That just cracks me up. #624 is even a quasi-high number! Speaking of high numbers, Josh sent 1970 #599, Senator rookies, and full-on high #639, Dave Campbell with four gorgeous intact corners. I'm not even taking that one out of the toploader. Whew! Two of the 58's were Ossie Virgil and Joe DeMaestri, both described as defensive specialists. Do defensive specialists even make the majors anymore? Josh, these are awesome! Thank you! Bob Neill brought the Carolina joy with a wonderful, esoteric mix: two of my favorite set, 1954 Bowman, Dick Littlefield and Karl Drews, both in mighty fine condition! Then Bob added 1971 Kellogs #42, Dick Dietz. Love those old 3-D cards! I believe I have exactly one other of these and thus have never listed the set. I will now, if I can figure out which one I have. And last, sending a clear message that Bob thinks I need to start more sets, came John Montefusco in the form of a 1977 Hostess card. And you know what? I have some of those, too, in an oddball box. So my very next visit to the US, I'm getting those on my wantlist, too. You're having a big influence here, Bob. Thanks so Mark Holland, whom I will always remember as the first OBCer to trad9 with me, sent a ten-pack (Decuple Card Pleasure) also exhibiting some great variety. Ranging from Topps 58 to 69, Mark hits NINE sets! Gotta love it! Gene Woodling from '59, a 60, 62 (slighly altered back), 65, Milt Pappas and Jack Sanford from '66, Philly Tony Taylor from 67, a 68, and Al Ferrara in his Deckle-Edged version from 69. That's THREE of those I have now! Way to change all those "to go" numbers, Mark! Thank Finally, Nick Pelletier also hit a DecaCardPleasure with some serious focus: 1958 Topps. This is a nice dent for me, Nick! Included is the St. Louis Cards TC, which means I got a tiny little pic of Stan Musial, probably my late dad's favorite player. Yep, got the magnifying glass to admire that one. I also was very impressed with Hal Griggs, whom I thought had won 21 games for the Senators in 57--no mean feat--until i realized that was his minor league record. I didn't remember seeing those show up much on individual vintage cards (versus the later rookie duos or trios), but three of the ten Nick sent have minor league records. Huh. Learn something new every day, thanks to my friends! So can you tell that I'm missing this hobby, being so into the details? Hey, Mac, Mark, Bob, Josh, and Kent and Nick again, thanks a ton! I am profoundly grateful that you guys keep sending me cards, even though I can only snipe a return once in a blue moon. God bless each of you. Peace and Joy, Mike R-W PS It is distinctly possible that I have missed someone, so if you know that's you, give me a nudge. It'll give me a reason to dig through suitcases and have hope I might find some more cards here.
