Brian Betza allowed me to raid the virtual dupes box for some 57s, 60s, 61 and Post cards while Peter Mead sent a RAOK if the form of 2 more POST cards. I like the post sets. Instead of putting them in sheets, I put each individual card in a penny sleeve and place the sets in one big box. So far a 400 count box has plenty of room . It is nice to have them so accessible. BRIAN BETZA hits my Bears team sets by taking out 9 from various sets covering 1960 topps to 1965 Philadelphia. A pair of Doug Atkins cards and a Johnny Morris card are the highlights. Thanks Brian! The other three envelopes were all waiting for me when I came home from work on Friday. It was a tough start to the weekend, as the varsity softball team that I help coach at school bowed out of the state playoffs, sufferinga 3-1 loss to one of our conference rivals in a sectional semi-final game. Each year, we field a highly competive team, with a team goal being to win state. Although we were the 3 seed, playing the 2 seed, I really felt wewould win the game. Our pitcher had a no-hitter through 5 2/3, but just couldn't get out of the 6th, as we gave up all three of the runs in that inning. I usually am hit pretty hard by the ending of the season, and Friday was no different. Without a doubt, cardboard does help to ease the pain. Wally started pro ball in Elmira, NY, which I occasionally visit for work. Dave also waivered over a 1951 Bowman Branca, who, we should know, possesses a good baritone. And if that wasn't enough, Dave searched for extras and included 4 Goudey Indians for a seldom hit set. Dave says my Goudey Indians wantlist was confusing, and it may well be, as the guidebook says this is one of the most confusing sets to try to collect. Apparently it was issued in various runs, over several years, containing either 24, 48, 96, 192, 216, or 264 or even more cards, and to make it even more interesting, Goudey would sometimes skip numbers to excite collectors to feeding frenzy. I will try to re-organize my wantlist to be more clear. Nevertheless, Dave still managed to send 4 cards, all of which I needed. Thanks Dave! A couple of Brewers were tucked in, including one of my favorite unsung Brewer heroes, Jim Slaton. Great, great JOHN DAHMS' envelope was right underneath and I ripped it open to find a couple more hits to the mini set (combined making it one of the biggest one-day hits to that set I've ever had), a half dozen hits to the rarely-touched67 Topps, including Aparicio and "the Champs" card #1, and a 69 Topps hit.Even received some "grandkid artwork" to protect the cards! Thanks, Mike! Wes Shepard sends a great mix of cards from '61, '70, and '80 including a grey Ernie Banks and a blue-backed Nolan Ryan! Great variety, and great card- thanks Wes! There were less burned fingers this time around - and a bit more success with getting some clean faces (4 out of 30 some - not bad) and semi-clean ones (another two of three...). I also have become more of a master of the patented Talbot glue removal process (adjusted for commonwealth card use) andmanaged it in just 24 hours rather than a couple of days of drying time. Looks like I have most of the set as single cards (as well as the book filled with those same cards I got from Geno some years back) - just need 14 ofthe fifty for the individual card set. However - because of the way I had to extricate them I now have an entirelynew dilemma. I mean, do I count the Marlene Dietrich with Bette Davis' write up across her face as being the same card as the Marlene Dietrich with the Charles Laughton bio just above her hairline...? Then there is the issue of Bio Backs, Blank Backs and Partially Blank Backs... You can see the problem. It seems that with Glenn's help I have created an entire new series of variations - Perhaps Ken Morganti should hear about this (or perhaps not...) - after all when it comes to variations I would consider Ken my Guru (sorry Larry). One note in closing - if you get an e-mail from Glenn and he is asking if you collect cigarette cards - and he says he has some for you that will be 'interesting' - (and you can almost hear his chuckle coming out of your computer along with the e-mail) - it might be wise to think twice about saying - marcpeter / peter PS - I have a handful of dupes if anyone wants to have an original variation from the 1934 Players Cigarettes Film Stars (first series of 50) - don't think any serious card collector would be without one of these beauties forhis or her 'type set' --- I'm sure Glenn will want the first one - anyone else?? ================= Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2012 01:15:38 -0700 (PDT) To: Peter , From: Glenn Codere Subject: Re: It is finished.... First, 2 great OPC's from 1971--love the yellow backs, including Andy Messersmith. Also, a 53 Redman of Warren Hacker (he really shouldn't have been a pitcher with a name like that), and last, and far from least--knocks about 6% off my 63 Fleer list with a great looking Vada Pinson. Joshua included me in his OBC blitz with a 1963 Post Ron Fairly, and a 1972 Rick Wise. Fairly used to be part or the broadcast crew for the Seattle Mariners. He had some decent insights into the game; unfortunately they were always exactly the same insight for any given situation. After you have heard "It's easier to get a base hit if you hit the ball up the middle or away" for the 3000th time, it starts to get old. Also, he had a reputation of being aloof from the fans and not signing autographs. Something you don't expect of a player from his era. I don't miss him on the broadcasts, but I absolutely love the card! THANKS JOSHUA! ================= Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2012 16:57:45 -0500 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Yaz Subject: Income!
