Bill Ashton sends me a few more 69's as well - including Dock Ellis. I was reading the Wiki entry on Dock - funny how he tried to beam every player on the Reds in a game in 1974.. Made it to Bench before he made the bench. Fellow winner Ray Luurs sends me 3 topps 50's - 1 '57 and 2 58's And for the 2nd week in a row, my mailbox is hit by TJ Valacek with 6 from the 60's 2 each from 63, 64 and 68 - with the last two being high#'s for a set getting down near the end. And I almost forgot - Geno Wagner sent one of those Fleer Stickers, not even sure what year, that has Phila Phillie old-timer and HOFer, Ed Delahanty on the back (or is it the front?) - anyway, if you don't know the story of how he died, wiki it. They also brought the Scottish National Rugby team to participate in the International Rugby 7's being held this weekend. Myself andRich Niessen and our significant others had planned for months to have breakfast this morning at the Codere's temporary residence at Bally's Hotel & Casino. We all met in the lobby and after exchanging the customary OBC "Great to meet you even though it doesn't really seem like the first time" and the traditional cardboard handshakes, it was off to stand in line for the buffet. We were all able to chat for about 15 minutes about all things, me being particularly intrigued all these years on just how Glenn came tolive in and work for the government of Scotland. We were unfortunately cut short when work called me away just as we were entering the buffet. Alas, I didn't return to rescue my wife until everyone had finished eating and Maureen and Glenn had gone to watch the team. Truly sad I didn't get to spend more time with them. Rich and Debbie kept my wife company until I returned, thanks my friends. On to the cards. Rich passed me a Hank Aaron signature redemption card for his 1958 card he found recently in an old unopened Topps pack from 2000. Boy did someone miss the boat on that one! Thanks Rich for a card I never would have known existed. Just too bad the expiration on the redemption passed years ago. Glenn's fantastic contribution contained a starter set of Mitchell & Son cigarette cards of 1925 British River & Coastal Steamers. Very nice. Glenn started me on another similar set years ago that has since been completed so he thought I should start another one. And correctly so. He presented me the cards in a small tin that I initially thought was for the cards. Turns out it's some kind of antique medicinal tin for Puretest Iodised Throat Tablets sold by Rexall and produced byUnited Drug Company Limited, Nottingham England. Thanks so much Glenn and for treating my wife to a wonderful breakfast buffet, she thoroughly enjoyed it and the company. Manny's most interesting game was probably the 2 2/3 innings he pitched in a 19-7 loss to Toronto on June 26, 1983. Seattle already trailed by 9 when he entered the game, so another 7 runs didn't mean much to the final score. Tom Housley sent along a pair of the infamous WOFs: both of the burlap 1968 variety. One is a Chico Ruiz which is one of the first 2 1968 cards I ever owned (along with a Don Pavletich). I think I pulled them out of a barrel (literally) for a nickel each when I was maybe 9 years old. 30+ years later I'm still pulling cards out of barrels for a nickel each :) Thanks for the cool cards Tom! Jason Christopherson showed his enthusiasm for the WOF project by contributing 6 goodies to the cause: 4 1969's and a pair of 1964's. One of the '64's - a Clay Dalrymple - has a sharp villian's beard that somehow doesn't make him any more frightening than without. Great stuff Jason...thanks! Ed Schott has been a frequent contributor to the WOF project and he has sent a pair of envelopes stuffed with cardboard and ink recently - 18 cards in all. These are a virtual buffet of WOF examples that I can feast on. Included in the bunch is a 1959 Billy Martin with the dreaded marker through the team. My fave among the bunch is a 1964 O's Rookie card of Sam Owens and Wally Bunker...with a not-so-neat X right through Wally's face. I wonder if Sam had anything to do with this? Thanks as always Ed!
