Hey all, It's your newest member, Andy Huntoon, and I recently got access to all the Yahoo groups so I can officially thank a bunch of you! I'm sure you're all aware that it's probably been a pretty nice couple weeks for me lately. :-) Sorry if this is a long list, but here goes... Jason Christopherson sent me some 1969 Deckle Edge to get me one card away from finishing the set. Rich Niessen sent me a bunch of 70's goodies. Jake Elwell hit my 1973 Topps and 1974 Topps sets. Joe Denning sent a nice package of black beauties for my 71 Topps set. Matt Yudt hit my 1966, 1970 and 1971 sets. Richard Dingman knocked some 1978's and 1979's off my lists Rick Lyons helped me get a bit closer to finally killing the 1981 Topps set that is just aching to be completed at this point. Lynn Miller did some major damage to my 1970's sets! Thank you Lynn!!! Ken Goetsch hit my 1976 set nicely. Peter Mead hit a nice range of my 1970's needs with some 74's, 76's, 81's, 75's, and 79's. Guru TIpton graciously hit my 1954 Topps set! I've been working on this set the longest and have been slowly hitting it over several years so I'm always happy to get more of these beauties. Spike Glidden hit my 1978 Topps (including a Pete Rose!) and 1979 Topps Tom Housely knocked off some 1974, 1975 and 1981 Topps needs for me. And he sent me two 1954 Bowmans to "officially" start me collecting the set. Like we say, if you have two from a set you're officially collecting it. And know I'm hooked on these cards. They are awesome. John Harrell sent a very generous grouping of 1970, 1971, 1972 & 1973 Topps Gord Ellis hit my 1954 Topps set and 1970 set Mac Wubben sent a most generous T206 Frank Chance with a double back stamp on it! I was floored when I opened this and can't thank Mac enough for it. I collect T206's with period stamps on the back and also document all the various stamps I can find on my online project at http://thegreatt206backstampproject.yolasite.com/ if you would like to check it out. Dan Cipra hit my 1976 Topps set very hard. Much appreciated Dan!! Tom Elliot Sent a large offering of 1977, 1978 and 1979 Topps for those I think I got everyone so far. I can't express my thanks enough to all of you guys. You''ve really welcomed me with open arms and are showing me the true spirit of OBC. I'm really looking forward to many years of trading and helping you all out. I really hope to meet some of you at some point to thank you in person as well. I'm hoping to make my first trip to the National in the next couple years and I'm sure I'll meet up with some of you there. Thanks again everyone!!!!!! From the deep south (no, deeper than that) comes my every-so-often check-inwhen I get my hands on some cards that have found their way first to Wenatchee, WA (one of the more northerly addresses on the "Current Address List," I believe) and then into the hands of one of our visitors so that they can be couriered down here. I'm not about to trust the cardboard treasures of my peers to a postal system that is, well, untrustworthy. A few weeks ago, I paid my $10 for OBC dues, the first time in my tenure that I have had to do so. I pondered, for a few moments, if my membership isworth $10. After all, I do not have access to my collection here (they are safely tucked in the basement crawl space of a good friend in Wenatchee who intermittently tells me has has sold them for various things like tickets to the Seahawks), and hitting you guys is challenging and happens when I can track down the right ebay auction and then convince you that it really was from ME, not Joe Schmoe ebay seller ("When did we accept Joe Schmoe's application to OBC? Why did he send me a 55 Rizzuto? Huh.") It's also true that, as a missionary, I feel responsible to pay attention to every $10 Ispend. But the conversation in my head was brief. It went, "Is being a very limited OBC member here in Nicaragua worth my ten bucks? Yup, yup it is, because it keeps me in touch with these guys, and gives me a small connection to home. Plus, every now and then, I get to sneak in and kills somebody's set!" (I think I have two or three this calendar year.) Last week, my step-father-in-law and his friend arrived to do a work project at House of Hope, a ministry we volunteer with that saves girls from prostitution. He brought me three envelopes with baseball cards. Of course, Iimmediately started smiling like an idiot chugging Red Bull. One of these envelopes was from The Guru. In this envelope were three precious items. Two were cards. The third item was the best. To give you an idea how great that was, I must tell you that Sir Tipton sent me two, count'em, TWO Stan Musial cards! Genuine, authentic, vintage Stan the Man cards, one from 1960, #250, the other a 1959 Baseball Thrills, "Musial Raps out3,000th Hit." Larry said, "So for 2 days in a row I read that Stan Musialwas your Dad's favorite player. I knew where these cards needed to go!" That means not only did Larry care enough to hit me with two cards that aretreasures to me and connections to my late father, but he also READ MY POSTS! So what is better than two Stan the Mans? (Or would it be "Stans the Man?")Honestly, Larry's letter. It was encouraging, funny, honest, and hand-written, no less. It helped me to know Larry better. He went from being TheGuru, to whom we all look up in awe, to just Guru, a brother in faith and cards. Thanks, Guru, a thousand times thanks! You are a class act and deserve thestatus and respect you have in our little group. Now I have to admit, I am a little shocked, because both of these cards areperfectly legible! One is merely wrinkled, while the other has insignificant handwriting ("JP"? And not even over either of Stan's pics) and some spiderwebbing. And maybe a fold. Your reputation as a good, godly man is well-deserved. But as a purveyor of Tipton Mints? There is nary a hole to be found and 100% of the paper is still intact--on both sides! I can only assume that the "upgrades" that replaced these cards in your collection moreaccurately represent your excruciatingly rigorous grading standard, yea, your standing as our one and only Guru! ;-) Peace, Joy and God bless, Larry. Your encouragement means more to me than these cards, which is saying something! Thanks, everyone, for making this arguably the best $10 I'll spend this year. Mr. BRIAN BETZA sends a RAOK envelope, taking it upon himself to attack my mid-sixties Topps sets. Brian delivers three 1963's and five 1964's. Headlining the double-photos (what's our nickname for the '63 set??) is long-lived Sherm Lollar, catching for the Chisox at this point, still hitting a respectable .268 seventeen years into his pro career. Of the 64's, none were HOFer contenders, but I got fascinated with Steve Ridzik's stats. The nonchalant comment on the back says, "Steve began his professional baseball career in the minors in 1945." His first year with a MLB record is 1950, in which he pitched 3 innings and had a 6.00 ERA. He apparently went back down for another full season, then reappeared in the Show in '52 to turn in a 4-2 record and halve his ERA to 3.00 exactly. He stayed up through '58, during which he got straddled with 2 losses and no wins in 6 appearances from 9 innings of pitching with a 2.00 ERA. Tough luck and not much run support there, though maybe he was coming in with the score tied and the bases loaded. BUT most fascinating and mysterious to me is that his next season of record is Nineteen Sixty-THREE! Somehow Steve Ridzik returned to pitch in the majors FIVE seasons later, and turned in respectable 5-6 record for the Senators (come on, if you're close to .500 for the Senators' 56-106 10th place finish, 48.5 games behind, you're decent). Ridzik went on to pitch 3 more seasons (though '66 was just two appearances, 0-0), with a combined total for 3 full seasons with Senators of 16-15, one game ABOVE five hundred, so about 30 games above the average Senator pitchers' record during that time. I'll be impressed if anyone knows this--you can't get it from baseball-reference.com--but did Ridzik spend 5 years in the minors to start, another after his first sip of water, then four more in the middle before climbing back up again to end Isn't baseball fascinating? ;-) Thanks, Brian! Can you tell I miss my cards? I truly appreciate these hits and the chance to learn a little baseball history and chalk a few off the lists. I came home to find threeOBC envelopes waiting for me. Ant Arbeeny sent along a 1959 T high number of Bob Hale. He looks to be one of those unfortunate 4A players who (by 1959 at least) had never got a chance to really show what he could do in the majors. It is a great cardthough, and knocks that list down to 71 to go. Randy Griffin sent an great Christmas card with a 1962T Harmon Killebrew taped inside! Every time I see a card of him, I can't believe that he was listed at 5'11" and 193--he definitely looks shorter and sturdier than those numbers suggest. Thanks Randy! Larry Gershbach also sent an envelope with 3 cards, two pristine 1963T and an absolutely mint 1969T nosebleed of Dick Simpson. This both helps me get moving with my 1963 set and drops my 1969T need list to 94. Incidentally, Dick Simpson was apparently traded from the Angels to the Reds as partof the 1966 Frank Robinson trade. I had always thought it was Pappas for Robinson, straight-up--but I guess it was a three-way trade. It makes a little more sense now--Simpson was a 22-year old outfielder who had just hit.301 with 24 HR in AAA. So Pappas and a prospect that did not pan out for Robinson....Thanks Gersh for giving me this little history lesson! The ones Ken and Steve hunted up were the 1895 America's Cup Winner "Defender" and the U.S. Warships Chicago & Atlanta. If anyone comes across any other naval ships or themes, they would be very welcome. Then there was a treasure trove of Hank stuff as well. The ones I can mention here are 3 books, and 2 large pinbacks, none of which I hadbefore. Our other server will complete the thanks. Early Christmas for me, yipppeee!! Thanks Ken, Steve & Mark OBC is the Greatest! It's a wonderful opportunity to relax, chat, savor some great food, exchange small family gifts and the inevitableold cardboard swap. Christmas really came to Lynn early this year as Rich knocked me off my chair with some cardboard treasures. The most notable was an excellent (as in too good for my collection) 1955 Topps Double-Header of Hank. What can I say, this is just astounding. I mentioned toRich how just the other day I was looking at my Hank list and wondering ifI was ever going to see any of those early 50's oddballs of Hank. (How did he know?) But he wasn't done yet. There were also other Hank items. Two of which look vintage but not sure since I can't find a lot of information yet. They are both related to a set called Spot the Winner where you select one of three players/figures and one of three colors (yellow, blue, pink) on the back are revealed under UV light to indicate the winner. One of the cards is in English (#101 of 200 in the set) the other is inSpanish (#176) and has a hand-painted portrait in his Indianapolis Clowns uniform in the form of the 1974 Topps cards but on a tobacco sized card. These are also really cool and unique and previously unaware of. The Hank theme is continued on our other server. Thanks so very, very much Rich for being my Santa this year. Words kind of fail to describe my happiness right now. No Doubt OBC is the Greatest. The owner meticulously filled in Duke's face with a full pencil mustache, beard, and even cat whiskers. Hey guys, Merry Christmas from the most easterly located OBCer! For me, that means getting to open my Secret Santa envelope a full 5 hours before anyone else! Woo-hoo!! This year, Santa was played by Mac Wubben. I've had the pleasure of meetingMac both in the States and here on Scotland, and when I saw his name on the envelope, I knew I was in for a treat. Boy, was I ever!! Mac's package starts off with 4 late 1980s Kirby Puckett cards, a nod to a favorite from Mac's past. Next in line, a pair of unassuming 1957Ts, a set which is still a fairly recent addition to my wantlist. These 2 bring me upto just under the one third completed mark. Who's up for some '62 variations? Mac knocks off a greenie (Dr StrangegloveDick Stuart), and a needed non-green version of #137 "Babe & Mgr Huggins" - 13 greenies, and 2 non-greenies to go! Now we're into the older stuff....and the Tigers!! One card that's been on my "Most Wanted" list for more years than I can remember is a 1949B #180 Connie (Neil) Berry. Not any more!! And how about a guy from the pennent winning 1934 Tigers team - a 34G of Pete Fox, yet another from the 30 Most Wanted Lastly, but by no means least, we go pre-war.....that's pre-WW1!! Mac hits Glasgow with a beautiful T206 Hughie Jennings. Only the third PSA card in my collection, and one which will go up on my "special" display shelf ratherthan into a binder. Mac, thank you for getting my Christmas off to a wonderful start! I hope everyone gets as much enjoyment from their Secret Santa as I did. All the very best for the holiday season and 2013!! Mark was kind enough to send a Christmas card to me and the family with warm sentiments for the holiday season. But of course there was a few inserts as well. Mark came up with some new naval themed sets. Two cards from the British 1937 Sea Service Cigarettes set, 1 card from the 1955 Topps "Scoop News Events" set, and 1 asyet unidentified card from what I believe may have been based on the old TV show "$64,000 Question" since it shows a man in an isolation booth and the host is pretty much a spitting image of Hal March, the TV show's host.Since that show aired in 1959, this would obviously have to after that time. But it looks old enough to be from about that time. The card has apicture of a ship on the front with the question "Which ship crossed the Atlantic the fastest?" With the answer revealed on the back by laying red cellophane over a superimposed image. Anyone know specifically which set this is? Thanks Mark for the wonderful and timely additions. Best wishes to you and your family for a Merry Christmas. Hi gang, This year, my Santa was our bat expert from Biscuitland, John "Bama" Harrell. The gift has been sitting under the tree taunting me for about two weeks, but luckily for me, I've been so busy between work and the family that I haven't had a lot of time to dwell on it. I was up last night wrapping gifts for the kids until 3AM (I think they got more stuff this year than my brother and I cumulatively got until we were eight, but I digress.) Anyway, the envelope contained a book entitled "The Knack of Batting (and How to Select and Care for your Bat)" published by Louisville Sluggers. I can't pin an exact year on it, but it talks about stars of today such as Rogers Hornsby, Kiki Cuyler, Lou Gehrig, Jim Bottomley and Goose Goslin. The book gives info about all the finer points of hitting, which will come in handy for me when I make it to the Bigs myself (I'm sure it's still not too late for me). The back has a wide selection of 34 bats to choose from, which range in price from about 30 cents to a whopping $2.75 (I think I can get one of each of the 34 to try out for a measly $55 or so). Also included with Bama's note was a card that becomes one of the oldest, if not the oldest card in my collection. It's from a set of Canadian athletes circa 1890 which included two baseball players: Pitcher and Catcher. I have the number 9 card, Catcher, which interestingly features a catcher with the mitt on his right hand. I'm also a southpaw, who did a lot of catching in my slow pitch softball league. Quite inspirational if I do say so myself. I'll see you guys in The Show. THANKS SANTA BAMA!! Bama (John) ----- Original Message ----- From: cardclctor@aol.com To: OBC-thanks@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, December 25, 2012 8:52:19 AM Subject: [OBC-Thanks] Secret Santa Thanks! I can't pin anexact year on it, but it talks about stars of today such as Rogers Hornsby, Kiki Cuyler, Lou Gehrig, Jim Bottomley and Goose Goslin. The book gives info about all the finer points of hitting, which will come in handy for me when I make it to the Bigs myself (I'm sure it's still not too late for me). The back has a wide selection of 34 bats to choose from, which range in price from about 30 cents to a whopping $2.75 (I think I can get one of eachof the 34 to try out for a measly $55 or so). My Secret Santa was Anthony Arbeeny and in case you didn't know, if you take Ant A. away from Santa your just left with an S. Not sure what the meansbut I thought it was interesting. Ant sends three for the 1951 Bowman set. First up was Virgil Trucks who isstill alive at 95 years old but is in a rehab facility in Alabama. I looked him up on Wikipedia and discovered that his nephew Butch, was one of the founding fathers of the Allman Brothers band. Then there was Doyle Lade who appeared in three sets (Bowman 1949-51) and had the same pose in all three. The third hit was Danny Murtaugh. Growing up in the 70's, Murtaugh was one of those guys that I thought was just a manager because I was not familiar with his past playing performance. It still seems strange to see a card of him as a player. It also seems like Murtaugh was around forever but he died relatively young in 1976 at the age of 59 after suffering a stroke. Ant finishes the package with a 1966 Mets ruboff knocking that list down tojust Thanks very much for the cards Anthony and I hope you and your family had as an enjoyable Christmas as my family and I did. -Bob ReedMerry Christmas!=09=09=09=09=09 ================= Date: Tue, 25 Dec 2012 19:50:52 -0600 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Yaz Subject: Santa Income! Peter Mead was my Secret Santa this year and kept the 'secret' part with a North Pole return address and a postal mark so light it may as well be non existent, which it actually may be. Inside however, Peter signed the Christmas card and so the mystery is solved. Along with his note and signature, Peter packed 15 hits to my new 75 Topps mini set and a much sought after Topps 66 hi number. It was Art Mahaffey who isn't a star but we all know that ALL 66 Topps hi numbers are stars when it comes to their procurement. The first time I collected this set, back in 1966, I had no problem filling in the last series at the cost of pop bottles found at the side of the road. After foolishly loosing that set, I started again in 1975 and have been struggling ever since to grab those damn things, even making them a priority at the National. Well, every one is golden now. Thanks Peter! That wasn't the end of my Secret Santa package though. Peter hit my Yaz collection with an oddity from Yaz's Kahn endorsement years. It is a label from Yaz's Kielbasa Power Skinless Kielbasa Sausage. It's a pretty big label, (with a Yaz head on it). I've got a tiny Kahn's label with Yaz on it from a different product, so now I have two, I guess I'm collecting a Kahn's set of some sort. Thanks Peter! and Merry Christmas to all! None of the other FOOT guys could make it but Mike and I attended Day 1 of theGreat Lakes Invitational yesterday. This year's games featured Mich State/Western Mich and Mich/Mich Tech. We met up for a quick dinner in Greektown and were joined by a couple of Mike's buddies, Rocky and Cliff. Dinner was fabulous - the best stuffed grapes leaves ever, and Cliff has some great stories.... We then made the quick trip to Joe Louis Arena to see the 3 period of Game 1, and then watch allof Game 2, which was Mike's plan. The timing was perfect, as we plopped into our seats, the puck plopped to the ice for the start of period number 3. At that time, Western Mich held the lead at 1-0. The remainder of the period was scoreless until MSU funally found the net with 16 ticks left on the clock. After a scoreless overtime, the first ever GLI shoot-out held goose eggs for both teams until the fifth round, where Western re-claimed a victory. The second game was much less exciting, as Michigan Tech methodically racked up 4 unanswered goals to secure a spot in today's finale, where they havea chance to gain their first championship since 1980. After the game, we made our way to Mike's car, where he dropped me off at my parking garage - thanks again Mike - during the short trip, he handed me a handful of hits to the 1969 Topps set and an OBC shirt that had had picked up for me at the National - Thanks a bunch, Mike. John told me that the enclosed card was a Christmas present, so Christmas continued for me today with a 1972 Topps #310, ROBERTO CLEMENTE IN ACTION!! Yep, that was a top five hit! I know we each have our favorite players, but was there ever a more classy player than Clemente? Today is the 40th anniversary of his tragic death, flying here to bring aid to the earthquake victims. I can tell you two things, seeing this from my present perspective: Managua still has not recovered from the '72 earthquake. You can see wreckage and evidence of how the disaster damaged this city's infrastructure and economy yet today. Second, the Nicaraguans have not forgotten. Every pro baseball stadium has at least one enormous painting of Clemente. Many things baseball-related bear his name, and he is honored as a player probably second-highest, next to Dennis Martinez, who is very much a national hero.
