JD got me thinking about how Haddix got the nickname of Kitten. Here is a few tidbits about the =E2=9CKitten=E2=9D that I learned tonight (probably knew them at somepoint but age kicking in). a.. He was nicknamed "The Kitten" in St. Louis for his resemblance to Harry "The Cat" Brecheen, a left-hander on the Cardinals during Haddix's rookie b.. "I probably got more famous from losing the perfect game in thirteen innings than if I had won it in nine!" - Harvey Haddix c.. Haddix will always be remembered for his performance on the night of May 26, 1959. Though he didn't feel well, he took his turn against Lew Burdette and the Braves. Haddix retired 36 consecutive batters, pitching 12 perfect innings, but his Pirate teammates didn't score. In the 13th, Milwaukee's leadoff batter, Felix Mantilla, reached first on third baseman Don Hoak's error and was then sacrificed to second. The tiring Haddix intentionally walked Hank Aaron, and Joe Adcock followed with a home run. Brian likes the cards, and that alone makes me happy. But Brian is not done. This morning I open a PWE from Brian and there's a few cards in it. Starting off, there are a trio of early 1970's Topps Baseball cards, including a high number from '71. Then... a tobacco card of some sort. Wow. On closer inspection this is an 1888 card from the Goodwin Champion series for Old Judge and Gypsy Queen Cigarettes. Better still, playing off my passion for cycling (you guys know about that, right?  :-) ) this is actually a cyclist named "Wood", and it also features a vintage high-wheeler. Love it! Then... Brian's not done yet... for good measure he includes a 1934 Goudey of Cleveland Indian Dick Porter. What a great envelope, and a great surprise. Thanks Brian!

I love these retro sets. Yesterday, Mark Talbot joined a couple of my buddies and I at a viewing of the Red Wings winning the 1997 Stanley Cup, which was their first cup in 42years. We were able to get some autographs of Darren McCarty and Kirk Maltby. We were able to chat with McCarty for a few minutes afterwards, as wewere leaving. It was an enjoyable pre-Thanksgiving evening. Mark handed me an envelope containing a pair of 1967 Laughlin World Series cards to finally get me just over 1/2 way on that set (lots of hits still available), acouple of miscuts, a Fleer Quiz card and a pair of 81 OPC BB for my variations We had met up at the local Wednesday sho wlocation. That show has deteriorated to such a point, that there is virtually no reason to even walk in. Of course, if you are there, you are compelled to do so. I made a purchase from 1 dealer for $7 of a small stack of 1980 Topps FB Supers, a starter set of 1981 Marketcom FB (for some reason I have always liked the look o fthat oversized set), an interesting item of a 1964 NFL Handbook containing schedules and rosters issued by Hamilton Watch Company and a pair of American Tract Society cards. A few years ago, Peter Mead sent me a type card, and now these get me started on collecting this set. I should have learned by now to check the books for "hidden bookmarks". Had I done that at the time instead of waiting to start reading the book on my day off, I would have discovered another nice addition to the Hank collection in the form of a (as yet unidentified) trivia card asking a question about Hank. So Thanks again Dan. Joe Denning sent me a very unique Hank item. It's drinking glass of the 1957 World Champion Milwaukee Braves with all the team members facsimile signatures in gold on the glass. Unfortunately the glass has been well used and the bottom portion of the signatures are no longer visible. Including Hank's since I can't see it among the signatures that are present; Spahn, Mathews, Burdette, etc. But I do presume it was there originally and that's all that matters.
