On business to Manhattan with a rare overnight visit, I took the opportunity to visit Rob Fitts at his upper East Side apartment. I knew I was going to see something special with his vintage Japanese collection, but I had no idea how vast - and how cool - his collection would be. We hung out for a few hours paging through binders, talking about the Phillies and growing up not all that far from each other. I cant say enough about the collection - especially the Japanese Hall-of-Fame autograph collection; 3 big binders with almost every Japanese HOFer highlighted with a card and an autograph of some sort. At one point he pulled out his dupe boxes (yes plural and big) and let me at it. Well, I started out pulling a few 66's and a bunch of 67's - since I'm really trying to nail those late 60's sets this year. When I thought I had enough he pulled out the other big box with 68-70 and I wound up taking probably 80 cards or so total from 66-69. I felt really really greedy about it, but he assured me it was fine, and truthfully, it didn't seem to make much of a dent in the boxes either. So thank you Rob, for a wonderful visit and generosity with the cards. I had a great time and hope to meet up again soon. I recommend anyone visiting NYC to visit Rob. Yes, Times Square and Broadway are nice, and there a few museums here and there, but for something truly unique that you will thoroughly enjoy, I recommend the Fitts Gallery of Vintage Japanese Baseball. I honestly have been very busy this week at work with my regular warehouse day job and then filling in on the night shifts for some of our courier drivers who have been unavailable. Literally didn't know if I was coming or going and averaging only a couple of hours sleep a night for the past 5 days. Finally got a full 5 hours last night and feel somewhat better today. My meeting with Randy was cut short last week by work. Consequently he didn't have an opportunity to hand me an OBC package he had brought with him. He did connect with Rich Niessen and was able to pass the package to Rich. I had a few moments one evening to stop at Rich's place and retrieve it. And what a package! It seems that he and Mac somehow got together and worked on presenting me with another tough '52 Topps high number Russ Meyer. Thank you gentlemen for this terrific addition. I mentioned just a few weeks ago how seldom I get one of these and at that rate I couldsee the completion of this set in 20+ years. Randy and Mac have shortened that timeframe considerably. Also included in the package were some great Hank additions to be mentioned elsewhere. My regrets Randy for not being able to spend more time with you. Unfortunately it's the nature ofmy business being on-call 24/7. I can empathize with ER people only in the irregular hours. Great cards, Rob! This has become the toughest set of the 60s for me, even tougher than many sets from the 50s, to fill in. I still need some 44 cards, while other 1960s sets are nearly finished. Thanks much, Rob! richard D ================= Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 03:16:04 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: TYIT's I am so far behind, this is This Year in Thanks. In no particular order: Mike Mackie some 63 Topps FB for that never ending quest. Brian Lindholme for a SCP of a 1949 Bowman BB Gray back variation Ed Pike for a pack of Track & Foeld cards, including 7 T23 Pan Handle Scrap, a pair of Sanella, a 1926 Sports Co of America and a 1991 Kellogg's Olympic Champions. I love these non-traditional sport cards. Mike Mroz handed over a 1970 Chemtoy Super Ball of Juan Marichal Andy Cook sends along 2 envelopes, totalling 7 cards from 4 different decades, 3 different sports. Hope I got everything correct and did not leave anyone out. I do appreciate everyone for keeping me in mind and their recent additions to my collection. I have to get some paybacks out, but I am 700 e-mails behind first. Mike Rich ================= Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2012 21:31:00 -0600 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Yaz Subject: Income! From a name that seems to be on every other 'Thanks' post lately, John Stamper, comes several hits to my lists. First, a pair of '68 Topps Game cards, Tony Gonzalez and HOFer Ron Santo. That knocks that set down to six needed. Then, John sends a '78 Kelloggs' Burt Hooton and a pair of eighties star cards, Fisk and Molitor. Thanks John! FYI: I have booked a room in Pikesville for the end of July. Wade says he's up for going too. For those of you that are geography challenged, Pikesville is very close to Baltimore. ;^ ) Greg (yaz) ================= Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2012 22:47:05 -0500 To: OBC Thanks From: Subject: Loot from Yudt Monday thanks out to Matt Yudt, for a five-spot from the 55 Bowman Football set - great names, including Stautner, LeBaron, and two-sport Buckeye Vic Janowicz. The 61s had a cool mix of guys. Robin Roberts was represented as were such funcharacters as Rocky Bridges and Hobie Landrith (the last one prompted my daughter to say "Did he invent the surf clothes?"). I would have loved tohave a beer with Rocky Bridges some time--he just looks like he would be afun guy to listen to for a while. The highlight of the 1960Ts was Wally Moon, unibrow and all.
