First, John Storman sent a groupof 5 1961T's. These included rookies of two Mets before they were Mets--J C Martin and Chris Cannizzaro (or Canzeroni as he was known to Casey Stengel). There was also a Russ Snyder and a mini of Gordon Jones. The Jones card prompted my 4-year old daughter to say "It looks like I cut that card out, daddy." So a hit all around! Ken Pillion sent a beautiful 1968 T of Steve Carlton. He is so skinny that he evidently did not yet start his crazy yoga and moving his arm throughrice routine. It was pretty surprising to learn on the card back the skinny Steve led the 1967 Cards in strikeouts with 168 and was second in wins(to Dick Hughes). I guess Gibson was injured (or saving himself for October and the upcoming '68 season). Earl Kilbourn sent 3 hits, 2 to 1964 T and one to 1958. The highlight was definitely the 1964 T Don Demeter in his red Tigers alternate road uniform and P logo-hat. If the top of the card didn't say Tigers, I would swear he was a Phillie. Thanks Earl! First of all, let me thank Dan Austin for letting me raid a couple of his sets-in-progress. Dan finished off my 72 OPC set with the AARON, and also sends the last 12 I need for 75 OPC...led by Fred Lynn. These sets took a lot more effort than I expected and I'm very happy to put them away. Once Iget close to finishing sets, I really try to put them away...OPC's are tough though, so I resort to set raiding...I have special appreciation for allthose who have let me make progress this way. Huge thanks to Dan Austin...and who has 73 OPC's ;-)! Mike Rich also dropped quite an envelope...led by 9 cards from the tall boybasketball series...including Wilt!. Mike also included a tough 67 OPC stargell, a 49 Bowman high number and 4 hits to the 1971 fleer world series set. Finally Post Master General Peter Mead sends along 6 hits to the 63 Post set...led by Wills. Thanks for all the Posts (and knowledge) you've shared! I will also mention one ebay hit...landed the last 65 old london coin (takethat Mike!) that I needed. I guess I'll have to start the 63 Saladas now...though I never seem them. Peter Mead called me a few days ago to tell me to be on the look out for 2 packages and to call him when they arrived. I got the first 1 yesterday, and the 2nd one today. I held off opening the 1st until the 2nd one arrived. Peter has also been chasing a number of the same oddball sets that I am.In fact he has been ahead of me on a number of them. On the other hand Iam working on a number of sets that almost no on else is. I have about 25sets that I am down to a single card to finish the set. Peter sent a single 1962 Jell-o hit of Aspromonte. Peter also decides to send me the 1962 Post FB shortest of the short print Bakers to finish the set! Why am I therefore questioning whether I am making any progress? About 7 years ago, I picked up my first 1954 Dan Dee, which turned out to be the hardest shortprint in that set. I believe it was a PSA 1. Peter e-mailed me that he was working on the set and since I only had a type card would I swap it. Of course I did, and he sent me a pair of Dan Dees to get me to work on the set. A scant 7 years later and I was down to just 2 to complete this 29 card set. What was the last card in the packages? The Paul Smith! I think this is the same one I sent him 7 years ago, and gets me back to needing 1 (Doby, plus upgrade Bauer) to complete. So while I had FINALLY knocked off a set needing 1 to complete, I am still at 25 sets needing 1 to complete. Samenumber of sets needing 1 and getting a card that I previously owned; does this qualify as progress???!!! Thanks Peter for the unbelievable surprises. Richard knocked another off my ever-dwindling list with a great Expos Billy Stoneman, but then decimated by 58 list by sending Jim Gilliam, Frank Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Pee Wee Reese, Ted Williams and two team cards--the Yankees and the Bums! But, as they say on TV. "Wait, there's more!" He also threw in a 1963 Tim McCarver, and, for acting now, a special bonus of three 64's--some guys named Spahn, Snider and Ford. I am speechless! What a beautiful pair of cards! I started collecting them maybe 25 years ago and completed the 1953 set which I was closest to finishing, because the cards were big, beautiful, and to my (wise-ass) knowledge are the only cards which are both racist ("Red Man") AND sexist (on the back, "These Baseball Cards are for Red Man 'Chewers' and Their Boys"), ha ha. I have 140 different from the four years, but Mike sent a nice note about the pursuit of his master set of 800, and he's got 500 so far in that goal, so I'm way behind. And in this, my 30th year of serious baseball card collecting, it's the first time I ever saw a regular small white rectangular price tag used to identify the year of the cards.
