I had "lots of money" and bought packs and packs of these but always felt cheated because the cards were smaller. This is not the first year I purchased packs but it was my most favorite set of all time. My dupes supplemented my collection for probably ten years after that. It was probably ten after purchasing them I seen my first full size 75 card and thought whats that! I have passed alot them around OBC and thinknow I'm down to about 30 left in the dupes box, sad to see them go but very fond memories and they served me well. thanks mini's and thanks John. My impression was that it was less crowded than the last 2 Nationals. That was a surprise for me as I expected Chicago would be thebest attended show of all 3. However, I heard no serious complaints from dealers. It did make it more comfortable =96 less crowding at tables and in aisles. I have heard suggestions that it would be easier for us if vintage dealers were separated, and it would certainly save us some shoe leather. An idea I had that might help along the same lines is if there were someway for dealers to =93announce=94 what kinds of stuff they will have for sale. Not specifics, but if they didn=92t have any vintage, I could cross that booth number off my map. Not sure how the =93announcement=94 would take place, almost certainly electronically, or where it would be hosted. It would basically be taking my preparations one step further. For me it was helpful to make a map of the floor and locate all the OBC favorite dealers before arriving. It worked last year and again this year. Perhaps I will do it again for Baltimore and make copies if anyone wants one. This year, I was able to focus on strategies for ferreting out variations, and managedto net about 100 I didn=92t have before, as well as a handful that appear to be variations I have never heard of. Most were cheap and unknown to thedealers, even including a `69 white letter variation I found in a bargain box and which I would have assumed all dealers knew about. In addition, I netted about 40 hits to my `52 - `72 Topps run and about 60 to my `48 - `55Bowman run, plus a couple hundred `50s vintage cards from low-grade lots that will work well for gifts and trades. So in that way the show was a success for me, but, as others have already said, the most enjoyment came frommeeting new (to me) OBCers and getting to know better older (to me) OBCersand spending time passing cardboard around. I hope to do some more mailings when I eventually get home, which still will not be for another couple days, as I am slowly, and literally, working my way back to Massachusetts bydoing jobs along the way in Buffalo and Rochester all this week. Thanks are due to: Steve R for a ton of cards, including a Manitoba License Plate, starter sets for Jungle Chewing Gum and Fish Series cards, a stack of Goudey Indians, a 1930-1960 Non-Sport Guide book, a =9259 Spahn variation, plus deals on =9248 Bowman stars as well as several other early Bowmans and 3 =9255 Toppsstars (Williams, Snider and Banks!), and help getting a stack of =9251 and=9252 Bowmans and another stack of =9252 Topps from Pat at the Savage table, for help getting me dealer badges, plus a bunch of other cards I can=92trecall at the moment. The man is an embodiment of the OBC spirit. Glenn C for a 1959 hi # Norm Cash, and a Scotland OBC pin. Richard Labs for a pair of `55 Bowmans. Sal for 4 `72s for my 2nd set. TJ for a bunch of miscuts, including the first one I ever got with 2 different complete numbers on the back (I now have 2), and a handful of OPCs. John L for a =9265 Topps. Gersh for a =9252 Bowman Schoendienst. Larry B for 2 =9251 red backs and a =9251 Bowman. Kent for a stack of =9274 Topps team cards, and for finding my delinquent OBC Tom H for a swapmeet hit. Mike W for a handful of =9271 and =9172s at the swap. Sol for an OBC Vegas golf pin. Mike R for more miscuts, and some hits to my 2nd sets at the swap, and for organizing badges and swapmeet management. George V for more than a handful of tricky variations and a couple miscuts. My miscut binders are coming along well. I am eventually hoping to find miscuts for every number up through 750 and have now over 220 different numbers, with extras of many of those. Well, Richard Dingman sends me a truly amazing package. First big puffy I've received in a while (my fault, my wantlist for the 60's and 70's doesn't have much in commons). It contained: 33 1971's including Don Money, Rick Monday, Champs team card and Mark Belanger, among others 9 1970's with some guy named Chuck Manuel of the Twins who might make a pretty fair manager one day! 17 1969's with Jim Lonborg 10 1968's with two checklists 5 1967's with OBC favorite, Bob Buhl and those killer eyes 1 1966 Phillie Alex Johnson, before he won an AL Batting Title 10 1965's Wow, what can I say. And what does he write? The understatement of the year "Hope you can use these!" Richard, many, many thanks--quite the jump start on those OPC sets. ================= To: "OBC Thanks" Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2011 20:02:26 -0400 From: "Mark Holland" Subject: back in the 60s Thanks Richard Labs for nice stack of cards. when I first opened the package they looked really nice with the 1960 design. Within 5 minutes (kidding, I =E2m not that slow yet) I realized that these were the real deal. So thanks Richard for 15 really nice hits to my 1960T wantlist. I have excuses i won't trouble you with, but do wish to apologize for the poor effort below. The title explains my lack of timeliness."Windy" describes how my card room/office window was left open and the careful stacks of incoming cards got strewn about. So i know i got cards from these fine OBCers sometime ago: Bill Ashton, Bob Reed,Brian Betza, Gary Mandell , Ed Schott and just today and unaffected by the breeze, Glenn Codere. I know Andy sent a 52t because i asked for it and he awarded my claim! Thank you Andy! Ed sent a pair of 65 topps towards a very short list and Jim Kiick from 1971 topps (all time fave!) Thank you Eddie! Gary sent a trio (or more) of hits awhile ago, even before we negotiated a 52topps DScum deal. And that stack has also arrived safely. Thank you Gary! Bill always sends great cards, these were hits to the 60's era as i recall before the wind took them across the floor, mixing with offerings from other frequent , awesome senders the good Brian and Mr.Reed. I had crossed them off shortly after getting them, but now that was awhile back and apologies abound. It seems like my list is lighter by about 10 or 12 cards due to these. Sorry, but great thanks to each of you Bill , Bob and Brian! Glenn's envelope was an unusual one in that it didn't arrive par avion as dozens of his packs have come over the years. Assuming he borrowed an american adddress during his recent stateside visit, I was pleased to find a puffy with an OBC Scotland pin, a 56 Duke Snider, three from that same dwindling 65T set. Thank you Glenn! And now i will embarrasingly admit that there could be more. The facts above are as close as I can remember but I am still thinking I missed something or someone. What a terrible feeling so please lmk if i need to publicly acknowledge a recent send...I dont mind admitting another shortcoming on my part while vowing to try better next time...and to keep the window closed during windy evenings!! I was checking an old SCD guide I have for 62 Jell-o with my more recent 2008 SCD and the pricing differences were downright bizarre. Set price went up about 50% from $4500 to $7000. Commoons went from $5 to $12.50. #2 Richardson went from $20 to $500! #149 Aaron went DOWN from $150 to $60 (of course I have had that one for a while). Mays also went down from $150, but only to $125 (of course I have him also). Meanwhile #173 Clemente had also been $150, but now $175 (of course it went up, so I MUST still need it). Kaline went from $40 too $75 (more than Aaron). No rhyme or reason. Thanks Peter for driving me to work on the Jell-o sets, but pricing like this will drive me even nuttier than usual. Peter also sends two of my Hostess needs along as well for a nice surprise OBC package to start the week. Ken sends a a 1974 checklist and a 1968 game card of Frank Howard. Also, a1967 card of Tony Oliva and a real high number 1971 card of the Royals team. Then I get from Ken a 6 high numbered cards from 1970 includeing Merv Rettemund and Bob Allison. Finally a cool newer item. Thanks a lot Ken. That was a bunch of good stuff. Frequent contributor to the WOF project Ed Schott does it again with nine more hits. He sent along a fun batch from the 50's and 60's including a 1964 Nellie Fox (with ink) and a neat 1958 Gus Bell where someone along the way completely scratched out 'Bell' and wrote 'Fox' above. Thanks much as always Ed! Steve Hitzeman kept my postwoman busy with a very nice 4 pack of 1962 woodies including a Walt Alston. I've been looking for creases and just can't find any...meaning these will bring my set up a half grade alone :-) Thanks for the hits Hitz! At least that's what Ernie would say if he were lucky enough to be in OBC. That's what I did today. First off was an envelope from EEK with 8 shinny new cards. Thanks EEK. Second up were 4 74 Team Check List cards from John Dahms. These get me closer to my 74 variations. Thanks guys.
