No, I didn't invert the year numbers, these are actual '57 Topps Mini's used in dice games by a young John Storman along with size-matching '51 and '52 Bowman cards. I believe they also match the '75 Topps Mini's so if I ever start that set in earnest and get enough of them, I think I'll try and remember the rules of one of my dice games and just add these '57 Mini's to the mix. I'll have old Aaron and young Aaron but I don't believe any of the other 6 guys were still playing. Thanks John! Thanks out this week to RANDY GRIFFIN and GARY MANDELL. And, I would like to reveal a "family secret" for those OBC'ers who treasure a little baseball history and maybe some little known trivia. RANDY sends me 25 '74's, and GARY sends 153 cards mostly from 1974. Only one 1974 dup between the 2 of them which I find slightly amazing. Thanks so much guys. I appreciate the hits to my early 70's quest. GARY also sent me a 1951 Bowman of my Uncle Fred Sanford...the first card Ihave received of him since his passing this spring. I'm sure many of you have read "Summer of '49" by David Halberstam. The book was tough on UncleFred, as was the New York press at the time. Uncle Fred was a big, strongUtah boy, but slightly lost and out of place in New York City. I never understood why Uncle Fred rarely mentioned what I am going to regale you withtoday. Personally, I think it is an awesome story. Uncle Fred was born left-handed in 1919. Uncle Fred's father (also my great-grandfather), did what probably many parents did in the early 1900's- he forced Uncle Fred to use his right hand, not his left hand. And 30 years later? Uncle Fred is a New York Yankee as a RIGHT-HANDED pitcher just in time to see the end of Dimaggio's career, and the beginning of Mantle's. Even die-hard Yankee haters, given the chance, may have traded him places just to be there in that simpler time of baseball...and heroes. As rough as he had it in New York, he DID make the show using the wrong hand! Our family has always been veryproud of Uncle Fred, but there are only a few left who remember the details. I hope the OBC history buffs can help keep this one detail alive. Thanks again GARY and RANDY and OBC! Wanted one memorable trip with my daughter before she was too old to go with mom and dad. Elena is 16 and we asked her where she wanted to go. She said Paris, so, we spent the last 9 days in France. First time we've ever done anything like this. Spent 4 days driving around Normandy (Mt. St. Michel, Bayeux Tapestry, Omaha Beach and Cemetery, etc. Then 5 days walking our legs off (we like to see things you can't see from subway) around Paris. Fantastic trip. I'd love to do something like that twice a year, but reality sets in! Anyway, came home to a pile of mail, and of course I looked for OBC mail first (much better than bills--of which there will be a lot). Three great envelopes awaited me. In order of ripping them open: 1. Randy Griffin sends a great 54 Bowman of Mike Garcia as well as a 71 Scratch off of Juan Marichal. Getting close on those scratch offs. Many thanks Randy. 2. From Alabama way, Bama sends not 1, but TWO 53 Bowman Black and White. These are the first two I've picked up in over a year for that set. They are greatly 3. And from Chicago way, last, but certainly not least, George Vrechek sends a plethora of cards from my birth year set (which, sadly, since I am going for gray and white back variations, I will probably never complete). Yep, those pesky 56's. He sends 2 grey backs--Roy Face and Ray Crone, as well as two white backs (showing no prejudices) of Bob Wilson and John McCall. But before that, I was hit with another kind of Storman - 1953 Bowman from John Storman. John had recently posted a waiver wire; I requested some cards but they were either claimed, or not the variations I was looking for. John said he'd dig something up for me anyway - and despite my reply that it wasn't necessary, John ignored me & was very kind in sending over 3 1953 Bowman color, and a reprint of a '53 Bowman B&W from that "extended" set. The player? Mr. Jack Roosevelt Robinson. Very cool indeed. John, thanks very much for the hits.
