Thanks go out to JOHN DAHMS for filling in a really big hole from my 1970 Topps set. Willie Mays is now sitting inside my binder...in a neat bit of synergy, Topps gave him card #600. While that's appropriate for the Topps numbering system, it's also a tip of the cap to Mays, who finished the '69 season with exactly 600 career homers. In the envelope, John said he hoped the card meets my standards...and it's a terrific-looking card. Hell, I'd have accepted one that looks like it wasused for a stickball game in Willie's old Harlem neighborhood. That gets me down to needing exactly 60 cards for the '70 set...interestingly, I now have 660 cards from the set, the same number of Home Runs Mays ended up amassing before he called it a career. Good evening -- Going through a stash of mail that the kids had brought in earlier this month, I ran across an envelope addressed to me from Indiana University - Bloomington. While I am continuing to look for employment, I did not remember putting in an application there... and then I noticed the writing above the return address "Watts" and knew that while it was not likely a job offer, it was going to be a wonderful envelope to open. Indeed, upon opening, I found a groovy pair of psychedelic '72s. The top card was of HOFer Fergie Jenkins, who had just come off five consecutive years of 20+ wins! Growing up as a Twins fan, it's easy for me to forget about the quality pitchers in theNational League and Jenkins was certainly among the best. The second card from Ed was a wonderful semi-high number of Mike Lum. This card has specialsignificance to me because several (oops... many!) years ago I worked withthe Office of Research and Evaluation in the Austin Independent School District. One of my assistants was Linda Lum, Mike's former wife (they were still married when this card was produced). She still spoke fondly of him, but wasn't able to put up with the extramarital companionship issues that seem to tempt so many players. She was still a huge baseball fan and I thoughtit was pretty funny that her daughter had a huge crush on another major league baseball player (I'm upset I can't remember exactly who it was right off... I know it will come to me just as soon as I hit the "send" button). Anyway, thanks a bunch, Ed, for the wonderful pair of cards. My second thank you goes out to a Bob Neill for wonderful puffy that arrived earlier this week. The package included four terrific horizontals from 1960, including Joe Pignatano, Al Stieglitz, and a pair of Charlies -- or is it Charleys? -- Neal and Maxwell. The backs of both cards have the player'sfirst name spelled both as Charlie and Charley. Odd... I also love the text on the Sport Magazine 1960 Rookie Star Al Stieglitz -- "Al might have been a Giant regular for the 1959 season if a broken leg had not stopped him."Geez... what a tough gig to work your tail off to make it to the big leagues, only to break your leg and effectively end your career. Does anyone remember anything about Al? Anyway, along with the four fabulous cards from 1960, Bob sent a very nice batch of cards that will receive due thanks on theUV Thanks forum. Well guys, time to get back to work on another project. A former student ofmine has a nice stash of photo negatives from concerts from the late '70s and early '80s and I'm digitizing and cleaning them up for her. The photos were taken using the typical cheap portable cameras from that era and many were taken without focusing, just holding the camera above her head and clicking. It's still kind of a kick to see old photos of Queen, Black Oak Arkansas, Jethro Tull, Heart, Foreigner, and Cheap Trick who, ironically, will be playing at a free concert in Omaha's Memorial Park tomorrow evening (along with .38 Special). My son is due back from camp earlier in the evening but I'm hoping he has enough energy to still want to go over and listen to some good music.
