Mark Talbot and I decided to go down and check out the game between TJ's Northern Illinois Huskies and the Ohio Bobcats. As soon as we metup, Mark handed me a small case with a 1975 SSPC Promo set, plus a miscut card of HOF Robin Yount. We made it to the game as they were doing player introductions. We were fortunate to be able to get tickets as the crowd was unbelievable. Other than supporters of the 2 schools (Ohio green on the east side of the stadium and NIU red on the west side), Mark and I were among the 12 or so other fans at the game. Tickets were only $10 and we did not see a single scalper. We probably could have counted everyone that was in the stadium. Ohio jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead, although there were a few excellent plays on both sides. NIU rallied in the 2nd 1/2 and with 5 seconds to go the game was all tied up. NIU won on a FG 23-20. So we got to see a good ball game. The best part of the night was Mark and I BSing for about 4 hours. If was a fun night for a Friday. My favorite in this group was the Lindy McDaniel card which shows the picture in a classic pose waiting to take the sign from the catcher with the fans in the stadium in the background. Mike also included a Citgo coin of Willie McCovey knocking that oddball set down to a manageable 3 players. I'm continuing to catch up on my thank-you's from some time ago. If some of these are repeats, please forgive me--or just accept my double thankfulness! Bill Ashton hit me with a nice chunk of 1970 Topps. Included in this bunch were Juan Marichal, the WS champ Mets team card, Denny McClain, Yaz, McDowell, B Robby, and a personal 70's star (non-Yankee) favorite, Rod Carew. I was never a power hitter, so Carew was a great role model for me. Thanks, Bill! Brian (FT) Linhdolme wrought some damage on my 62 Topps with what amounts to a starter set of thirty hits! Included were the AL vicotry leader card with Mr. Whitey Ford, the Cardinals team card, and Pete Runnels, still hanging around a decade after his famous 52 card appearance. Glancing at his career stats, looks like 62 would be Pete's last strong year, and strikingly, he hit his career highs in several categories, though he would only play for two more seasons after this. My good friend Randy Welk hits me with two 68 Topps, for which I am pretty sure I gave previous, erroneous thanks--included was Jim Perry, not brother Gaylord. Thanks, again, more accurately, Randy! Rick Lyons, who has always been a good trading partner and was my first hero, killing my childhood favorite 78 Topps set, returned to the scene of the crime, sending an upgrade of that final card, Stan Bahnsen! Cool! Keeping him company were three 66 Topps, two 67's--the Phillies team card a Giants rookies card, and three 68 Topps. That was a great envelope, Rick! Thanks, Man! Okay, I'll continue to post my retroactive thanks, and maybe even be caught up by Christmas. First Larry Morey sent anSCP containing a 72T Willie Stargell In Action, knocking off one of my topten most wanted. Today the Guru worked his magic with 3 NY Giants cards. The first, a 1923 W515-1 (had to look that up) of backup outfielder Bill Cunningham, is one of my new favorites. I was lucky it was Cunningham (who only played from 1921-3) and not Ott or I would have had a crazy time figuring out the set it came from. Next came a decapitated Harry Danning from the 1941 Double Playset. Judging by its condition, this great card must have been owned by a Dodger fan. The last card was by far the best--a 1934 Batter Up of Prince Hal Schumacher. I met Hal Schumacher (a native of Cooperstown) in 1987 andgot an autograph. He was avery friendly guy, especially so since I thought he wrote Hal Newhouser and thanked him as Mr Newhouser--I only figured out his true identity a year or so ago. Hope you're all having a terrific buildup to the holidays. My intent was to do a big write-up of my recent trip to Las Vegas, but I've been super busy since I got back and that idea kinda lost steam. At any rate, I was able to finally meet Lynn Miller. We've both been in OBC for about the same amount of time, and I've long looked forward to meeting him. Leading up to my visit, Lynn and I had been talking about where I was going to stay. Lynn was able to secure me a room at the Air Force Inn on Nellis AFB, and it turned out to be a very nice room for an even nicer price. It was very cool being around an Air Force base again - I spent six years at Castle AFB before it closed, and I really miss having the military around our area. A couple nights later I was pleased to meet another local OBCer, Rich Niessen, and also old friend Mike Hair. We got together at a restaurant that Rich's wife works at. Around a couple of cold beers and a fantastic burger, the four of us talked and laughed like we'd grown up together, which is pretty much the way it is every time OBCers get together, isn't it? Later that night as I drove back to Nellis, I first followed Lynn over to his house to meet his wife and three of his children. Beautiful family - I know how hard and long he worked and worried to get them here. I'm so happy his family is complete again. The highlight of OBCers spending time together is the instant camaraderie , but I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the old cardboard that came my way. Upon arrival, Lynn didn't waste any time giving me the "OBC handshake", which yielded 7 very tough hits to my 1966 birth year set, plus a modern Duke Snider commemorative patch card. Love 'em, Lynn - thanks! Rich did some nice damage to the '68 set, knocking 8 numbers off the list - they're greatly appreciated, Rich! ================= Date: Sat, 24 Dec 2011 17:05:40 -0500 To: Obc Thanks From: Edward Watts Subject: Correction Hi All, I just learned that Larry Morey was simply the agent who delivered the Stargell IA on behalf on Mike Rumley-Wells (which also explains why I couldn't find a wantlist to return fire). I was absolutely floored this morning as I opened my Secret Santa gift from Huber Heights, Ohio. Santa's package had arrived a day before my family and I left to spend the holiday in Tucson Arizona. The box has been sitting under my in-laws tree as I have stared it down, wondering what mightbe on the inside. My initial guess was that it was a book, as the box wasa bit on the heavy side. Upon opening the box this morning, I found that I was wrong, Way wrong. Inside the box were 5 individually wrapped packages. Each of them wrapped with a special OBC wrapping paper. I tore into the first package and found 20 hits to my 1976 Topps football set. My next package contained a lucky seven hits to the 1977 Topps Cloth set, includingHOFers Joe Morgan and Don Sutton. The next OBC wrapped package had four hits to my 1970 Fleer World Series set, knocking that set down to one. Thehits include the 1909 series with the Georgia Peach and the Flying Dutchman, the 1936 series, the 42 series, and the 1947 series. The next package contained the last 5 hits needed for my 1965 Topps Embossed set. This was aset that I started at the National (thanks to Spike and Kent). Today, I have closed the book on the set. The last five hits were Jack Baldschun, Bob Clemente, Brooks Robinson, Sandy Koufax, and the Mick! Wow! A set killer. Finally, the last OBC wrapped package contained 5 hits to my 1964 ToppsGiants set. Just an unbelievable Secret Santa gift containing 41 hits to five different sets. Thank you Tom! We are very fortunate here to be one of the 9 or so metropolitanareas that has all 4 major professional sports, plus some major universities with big time college athletics. Yesterday, being Boxing Day, saw a couple of buddies, with a nephew and a pair of sons join me to see the 2011 version of Harlem Globetrotters. I had not seen them in years, and while they had many of their classic gags, they had also updated a few items. Instead of the Washington Generals, they played the International Elite. Of course the game was rigged for the Trotters to win a close game, even though their shooting was way off, especially from 4 point range (that is not a typo, they had a couple of spots to shoot from that counted as 4 points). There was also a penalty box, for bad behavior. The Trotters were down 5-3 men a couple of times. Tonite was the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl between the Western Michigan Broncos and the Purdue Boilermakers. The game had a number of unusual plays, including a 2 point conversion, 2 successful on side kicks, a 99 yard kick off return for a touchdown all in the first half. The second half had 2 plays that resulted in double turnovers. A fumble or interception, that while being returned by the defense, was fumbled and recovered by the offensive team. Western was absoltely inept inside thee red zone, especially inside the 5 yard line. Purdue held off a Wesstern rally for the victory. I was accompanied to the game by Ron Perry and Mark Talbot. We met up at a local tavern for a pre-game meal, where Mark handed me a set of Fritsch 1 year wonders and a pair of miscuts. Ron joined us shortly thereafter and presented me a pair of Tiptonesque 1940 Playballs. An interesting game, good company, make for a nice nite. I doubt I will make the Pistons home opener tomorrow or the GLI Hockey Tournament Thursday and Friday. Aftwer a day off on Saturday, I get to watch local footall teams on TV, January 1 (Detroit Lions), January 2 (Michigan State) and January 3 (Michigan). That would be Fr. Pat Wattigny of course. Inside said box was The DetroitTigers: An Illustrated History written by Joe Falls. This is a fantastic gift for any Tiger fan especially one who grew up as I did reading Joe's editorials in the Detroit Times, News and Free Press. I can recall standing on the corner waiting for the delivery truck to arrive with my bundles of papers and even before folding them and putting them in my canvas bag for delivery I would go directly to the sports page to read Joe's column. Always insightful and often controversial Joe was a respected writer, statistician and historian. I can recall times when I would get so angry with articles he wrote that I would vow never to read another, but of course I always would. I remember Joe being merciless on players who he thought did not live up to expectations. He was particularly hard on Rocky Colovito and would track his RNBI (Runs Not Batted In) when Rocky would strand runners on base. Needless to say Joe and the Rock had what Ernie Harwell referred to as a "Rocky" Thanks Fr. Santa for this much appreciated addition to my Tigers library. This was the year after his career year of 1957 when he won his only MVP title where he and Lew Burdette led the Braves to their WS victory. They would be in it again as this issue was going to press but lose to the Yankees that year. What a super read this is and takes me back to those years. Great articles also on Jim Thorpe, Sam Snead, Bill Turley, Bill Mazeroski, And a really interestingarticle on Bill Veeck and his analysis of MLB expansion. Pretty accurate too as he mentioned these cities; NY (NL team), Minneapolis-St. Paul, Toronto, Montreal, Houston, Dallas-Ft.Worth, Atlanta, Denver, Buffalo, Seattle, Miami.
