With the Tigers in the PLayoffs, I was able to arrange to go to Game 4 with Mark Talbot. We sat in the rain soaked stadium for an over 2 hour rain delay, and then the Tigers lost in 11 innings of a 4 hour game. This caused me to get as nice upper respiratory cold that I still have and is knocking me down like a Verlander high hard one! Mark slid a pair of set killing 1977 TCMA All Time Great White Sox cards and a pair of 73 Topps Team checklists. Ron Perry was willing to let me buy a ticket to Game 5 from him, and we sawVerlander hang on and the Tigers pull within 3- 2 in games. I met both Mark and Ron at the location of the Wednesday card show. Since Game 4 was on Wednesday, Mark and I ducked in and we both got items from Harold, one of Mark's fav dealers. I got 2 hits, a 1960 Bazooka Spahn and a 1978 Tigers Spring Training program (my oldest Spring Training program). Ialso picked up a Tipton Mint 61 Topps AS Frank Robinson high number. Mac Wubben, whose Rangers beat my Tigers to get to the WS, eases the pain with a prewar package, graced by a Negro League stamp. Cards were 4 1939 Playballs and 2 T-205s, featuring a Bresnahan, mouth closed version! Not to be out done, Lynn Miller sends in a package with a number of Baseballs Great Hall of Fame postcard size cards. I have seen many like this, butdo not know exactly what they are. These are labeled as 1976 Renata Galasso (TCMA) cards. The highlights of the package were 4 1922 E-120 American caramel card and my 2nd 1921 Oxford Confectionary E253 card of Eddie Collins! Never cease to be amazed by this group. HUGE thanks goes out to two wonderful OBCers who were kind enough to forward some mostly-old cardboard my way: First, EEK included me in his massive assault on OBC wantlists. Along with a handful of shinier cards, he sent a trio of '67 Tigers from his dupe box of Tiptons. The cards enclosed were 98.7% of a Joe Sparma [the surface is missing over the other ~1.3%], a dynamic rookie stars duo of George "Moose" Korince and John Thomas Matchick complete with a tapemark over Moose's stats on the reverse, and a cool Hank Aguirre sporting a two-tone hand-colored block lettering for the Tigers team name and an added "?" following TIGERS. Along with the great cards, EEK includes the following note: "Please forgive the formality of this note as Arthur Itis has come to visit and seems to be here to stay limiting my ability to write." The note reminded me of one of the first jokes I heard in my youth: Woman One: Have you seen Mildred lately? Woman Two: No... but the doctor says she's been in bed with arthritis. Woman One: Oh my... he always was the nastiest of those Ritis brothers! At any rate, thank you very much Earl for the cards and the reminder from my somewhat irreverent youth. :-) Package number two arrived from Lynn Miller. When I opened the package, my son asked what was wrong, because I just kept saying, "Oh wow... oh wow!!" The 13 horizontal '60 Topps cards were cool, but they weren't "what was wrong". The awesome '62 Ed Keegan and '64 Juan Pizarro also were excellent, but again were not the cause of my incoherent mumbling. The 9 spectacular '67s were fantastic, a couple of them razor-sharp, also invoked joy into my day, but even they were not the raison d'=EAtre for my stupor. The card that took my breath away was entombed in a Beckett Grading Services casing (fromwhich it likely will be liberated) was the newest of the batch: a 1974 Topps #300... Pete Rose!! Now getting a Pete Rose card any time is wonderful, but what was so special about this particular Rose is that it COMPLETED MY 1974 set!!! This is only the 6th vintage baseball set I've completed ('58 Topps, '68 Topps, and '76-'79 Topps), and the thrill of finishing a set is definitely still there. Thank you so much, Lynn! I hope I can, one day, return the favor. Having just passed the one year anniversary of becoming unemployed, it may take a bit, but I sure look forward to the time when I can bemore of a contributor. Thanks again to both EEK and Lynn... and all of OBC. You guys (and Linda) are the best! I've had two incomings that are long overdue for giving thanks. Without any further delay (if that's even possible): Randy Welk sends a 4-pack of 70's WOF beauties including a 1970 Topps Ken Boswell with four written-in front teeth. Also included was a 1970 Topps Danny Murphy who almost looks Kabuki-like with some nifty face paint and blue lipstick. These are great Randy! Thanks much! Frequent WOF contributor Ed Schott is at it again, stuffing an envelope full with nine cards. Ed's most recent batch is a marvelous mix of 50's and 60's Topps cards. My fave of this bunch is a neat card in itself: a 1958 League Presidents cards featuring William Harridge and Warren Giles. What makes this example even better is that some young lad must not have thought too highly of the front offices so he crossed out their titles. He also must not have too highly of their ability to think on their own as there is some sort of umbilical cord connecting their brains! Classic stuff Ed! Muchos gracias! Ed Schott passed along a 34-pack of 1961 Topps cards. They appear to be hand cut from an original sheet--which means that amazing color offsets theoccasional odd card size. These are brighter than the 2010 Topps 1961-redux cards my son pulled from packs last year. An amazing batch--Thanks Ed! Alvin Autry passed along 7 hits to my 1972 Topps list including Steve Carlton (non-traded version) and Willie Stargell. This pushes my 1972 list down to 116 (and my list for completing the entire Topps run from the 1970s down to 118--more on that below). Thanks Al! Last but not least, John Dahms hits my 1969 Topps set with two cards (including an Al Kaline World Series card). John also sent #9 on my ten most wanted list--the 1970 T Giants Team Card. This is his second hit to my top ten most wanted in the last few months and knocks my 1970 T list down to a measly 2 cards! Thanks so much John! And thanks to OBC!
