A few thank yous as it is always nice to return from vacation.  Spent most of a week in Yellowstone--one of the true gems in our National Park system.  It comes as no surprise that it was the first of its kind.
On the mail front:
Mark Talbot hits three sports and many sets with an envelope that is hard to match--a Nabisco Tommy John, OPCs from 1971 and 1976, football cards from the 61 Topps, 63 Fleer and 64 Philadelphia FB (only Tark) sets, and a couple of iceman fom the 68-69 Topps set.  Thanks Mark and the never ending trade is back in my court.
Grant Rainsley sends a handful of football cards and my first two 1973 OPC baseball cards.  I do not live by the Mike Rich rule--so I can't say that I am collecting the set yet (I need to finish at least one of the OPC sets on my wantlist first).  Many thanks Grant!
And not to be out done--Marshall West pulls ten singles from his 62 Jello set and sends them my way.  Truly an unbelievable, only in OBC, gesture.  I now only need about 57 cards from this impossible set.  How does one say thanks--well I guess I will have to put another envelope in the mail.  Many thanks Marshall.

The upshot of this rambling is that I'mstill probably a month away from getting back to being more active in the group. Looking forward to trying to hit some wantlists again. In the meantime, this week brought a couple of fantastic envelopes to my mailbox. First we have TJ, who was able to "Valacek" (thanks for the help with the pronunciation!) a half dozen cards from my 1968 and 1969 wantlists. One of the cards was 69T #81 Mel Queen. I know I'm a rookie at this era of cards, but I was surprised by the back of this card as his stat box is split in two AND there are two completely different lines of stats from 1966 Cincy. I suppose that's just an uncorrected error, but I found it cool. Ignorance is bliss sometimes! The next day, Brian Betza sent me the spoils from a dupe box effort he put together. Unfortunately, I forgot to include the postage from my end of the deal (Brian gave me a mulligan on the error, but I still feel guilty!). The envelope contained six cards from 1969 (I REALLY gotta change that listing from "have" to "want" on my list--OBC has simply been awesome. I neverwould have thought I'd even get close to a set pre-1970). It also had twocards from 1970 that were such nosebleeds that you'd have to have a bullhorn to yell a greeting down to Bob Uecker. Subject: Another stash from the past

Hi all -- As I've been cleaning today, I found a little stash of three envelopes,
all opened, none cataloged, and (embarrassingly) none thanked. They include,
in order of postmark:

7/7/2009 - Bob D'Angelo -- Bob sent a wonderful trifecta of psychedelic '72s...
Chico Salmon, Denis Menke, and Billy Champion. These are all semi-highs
and all in almost-unrecognizably good condition. Thanks so much, Bob!

10/21/2009 - Mark Talbot -- Mark sent a stone-cold four pack of '75-'76 Topps
hockey players, including the Islanders Team Leaders, Rick Martin, Gilles
Marotte, and Larry Romanchych. Oh... and there was the super-nice Birthday
card that Mark had hand-written. Thank-you, Mark... you're the best.

10/24/2009 - Ray Luurs -- Ray sent a fabulous foursome of football foes, including
a pair of '63s (Bears flanker Johnny Morris and guard Roger Davis, 1970
Topps of Kenny Graham, and a '71 Topps of the phenomenal Dolphin wide receiver
Paul Warfield. Fantastic package that definitely deserved an earlier
thank you... THANKS Ray!!

??/??/???? - Aaron Shirley -- The tri-folded paper with a sleeve of awesomecards
was out of its envelope, making me thankful that Aaron wrote on the inside
of the paper. While his hits were of newer vintage, they were no less
appreciated. As most of you know, I enjoy collecting cards of players where
they are pictured with their kids. Aaron sent six additions to that long-neglected
collection along with five more hits to my son's Catcher collection.
Thank you, Aaron... my son and I both loved the cards!

While I'm on a old-thanks roll, I'm not sure whether I've properly thanked Steve
Rittenberg for all of the amazing oddball nonsports cards he has passed
on to me, but even if I did he deserves thanks again. I have been scanning
some of them and working on updating my list. What a wonderful, relaxingway
to spend a holiday. The last card that I scanned was from one of Toppsmost
popular sets ever -- Mars Attacks! Topps was so concerned with publicperception
regarding the graphic nature of that set (along with their Civil
War set)that they published them under a parallel copyright, Bubbles Inc.Neat,
neat stuff... thanks again, Steve! (P.S., I also found that card youwanted
me to send to Glenn.. will have it on its way, at last, tomorrow).

Well all, I hope you have had a terrific Independence Day. Again, apologiesfor
the late nature of the thanks. The cardboard is timeless, but the thanks
should not be.

Hoping to do better,

Randy Griffin hits me with a flat packed with five 1973 Topps hits for my second

Hi everyone,
This envelope arrived about a week ago, so I apologize for the tardiness
of this note. By all rights, I shouldn't have waited more than a few
minutes to send it, but I'm just now getting over the shock (that's my excuse
anyway ). John Harrell sent over a TRIO of T-205's (Archer, Snodgrass and
Steinfeldt if memory serves) with Polar Bear backs to cross off some from a
list that hasn't seen a lot of activity in years. I agreed to send back
the ones I already had (with other backs) and I added a few other cards I
hope he likes for his trouble. That package went in the mail on Saturday, so be
on the look out! THANKS BAMA!! TAYL,

I was informed earlier in the week that FOOT territory would be invaded by Bob
Neill. I sounded the alarm and an OBC watch was immediately put into effect.
Bob was going to be available to get together Friday nite, on his way,
with his wife Barb and daughter, to track and bible camp in Canada. Bob
was allowed to come out and play with his friends. Original plan was to meet
for dinner and watch the Tigers take on the Twins and a local sports bar.
At the last minute, I was able to get the company tickets to the game.Mark
Talbot met me at Bob's hotel and we met up with Mike Mroz downtown. We
did nt get there until the bottom of the first, as the Tigers jumped out
to a 2-0 lead over the rival Twinkies, with a Verlander v Liriano matchup.
The Tigers chased Liriano in the second with 5 more. It was a beautifulnite,
with the Tigers trouncing the Twins, post-game fireworks, meeting Bob,
Barb and daughter. Bob in true OBC fashion, handed me a 1953 Mother's Cookie
upon our meeting. Mark Talbot chipped in with another pair of Gum Adventure
cards, including a boxing card. After leaving downtown, we went outto
a Steak N Shake, where I was able to show off a couple of my fav albumsof
cards. We finally left after 1:00 in the morning. Fantastic meeting another
OBCer, seeing another pair and watching the Tigers win. It was a great

Subject: How to make a day great

I just got home after coaching my boys team in a mini tournament an hour away
in Neillsville, WI. In the slightly unexpected heat, we got killed. Still,
I was having a fine day. All the kids were getting a lot of opportunities
in positions they hadn't played before and everyone seemed to be having
a fun time despite the scoreboard. Energy was positive. Then it happened.
Up 17-3 in the final inning and with runners at the corners with one out,
Neillsville decides the right thing to do in that situation is bunt. Classless.
My boy, pitching, pounced on the ball but wisely ate it, not allowing
the runner from third to score. The other coaches and I ripped into their
coach with backhanded comments directed at "no one in particular". Hecouldn't
hear us, apparently, despite being ten feet away in the third base
box. As the inning ended, he walked over to us and had the gall to say "did
you see him bunt? He actually bunts better than he hits, so that's whywe
bunt him." Perhaps, thought I, he bunts better than he hits because his
ignorant coach takes the bat out of his hands at any given opportunity. I
had also considered telling my son to plunk the next guy, or perhaps justdo
an intentional walk, which would end the inning with the five run max, since
it was obvious the run was important to them and equally obvious theydidn't
want to swing the bat. Burning inside, I let it all go with nothing
more than a non-eye-contact grunt as I heard the "explanation". I'd liketo
say we rallied and won, and I can say that my son had a two out hit to get
things started, but we didn't. The incident continued to gnaw at me all
the way home. My day was ruined.

I pull in the driveway after the requisite after-game pit stop, this time at
McDonalds. One item appeared in the mailbox--a puffy envelope from Rick Johnson
in Duluth. Coaching has killed most of my free time and I haven't done
much of anything with OBC for awhile, so to say an envelope was a surprise
is a bit of an understatement. I opened up the puffy and, I kid you not,
I began to cry. 1971 has always been my favorite set because it's my birthyear
and the cards are just so many shades of awesome in the first place.
Staring at me from within a black border was Dusty Baker, Tom Paciorek, and
Don Baylor. Then Jim Palmer winked at me. He knew darn well that he officially
was the last empty space in the 1971 binder. And those two cards,
if not wonderful enough, actually had a ton of friends in the package! Eight--EIGHT
1972 Topps high numbers including Rod Carew. That puts that set
within striking distance now. Somehow, someway, Rick decided that this still
wasn't enough. He also threw in three high numbers from 1970, including
Ron Santo and Johnny Bench. I'm now under 20 left for that set--simplyamazing.

Tears of happiness are usually reserved for my family. I guess that just means
OBC is a member of my family. Rick, thank you for being my first set hero
in OBC. I will do what I can to find something to return the favor.

Subject: Fantastic time in Detroit!

As earlier related by Mike Rich, I had a fantastic time in Detroit on Friday.
We were passing through on our way to the wonderful town of Port Elgin, Ontario
to help run a track and VBS camp this week. I mentioned to Mike that
our plans were to go to the zoo during the day, and that we had no plans for
the evening. He suggested getting together in the evening, and that he'd
pick me up at our hotel. Then he calls around 5:30 and asks if I have a curfew!
Wasn't sure what he was leading up to, until he mentioned he had the
company tickets for the Tigers game and that he, Mike Mroz and Mark Talbot
were planning on going, and there were 4 tickets. What Mike didn't mention
in his note is that the seats are right behind home plate, lower deck! Needless
to say, a great time was had by all, and they even allowed me to wear
my Phillies cap. That makes Comerica the 26th major league stadium I have
seen a game at, and one of the nicest (not to mention the wonderful company).
And, since this is the thanks server, almost topping the game were the
cards I received that evening. First Mike Rich hands me a very familiar box--it
it are 6 Chemtoy Superballs, including such luminaries as Catfish (er,
sorry, back then it was was Jim--Charlie Finley hadn't gotten hold of him
yet) Hunter, Harmon Killebrew, Rick Monday, Rico Petricelli, as well as Dick
Green and Ted Uhlander. Then, at the bottom of the box lies a 64 Standup
of the 64 All-Star game--none other than Johnny Callison, a 62 stamp ofErnie
Banks, a 52 Wheaties of Patty Berg, a a case of SEVEN Redman, including
the Ol' Professor, Casey himself.

Then, on the ride to the park (wonderful big city traffic), Mark Talbot hands
me a bundle with 3 UNTRIMMED 54 Bowmans.

And, as they say on TV, WAIT, There's more! After the game, as we sat around
a table at the Steak and Shake, Mike says, rather slyly, you're getting close
on the 68 set, aren't you? I say yes, I think I'm down to 2 or 3. Hetells
me it is two, then proceeds to hand me both of them--Jim Palmer and the
Bird's Belters!! So the 68 set is laid to rest. Thanks Mike

If you've read this far, let me recommend that if you get to Detroit, look up
the FOOT gang. Ignoring the great cards, the hospitality and friendship is
fantastic. My only regret is that I had to call it quits around 1:30 AM,as
we did have a long drive ahead of us the next day.

MARK TALBOT hit me with 2 53's Topps in Fred Hatfield Black Bio and even
slimmer than usual George Spencer (all that left is a head shot), and whati
guess is a mini Topps of Bert Blyleven. It is a 1975 but it is smaller
than a regular card from 1975 and doesn't appear to be trimmed. Anyway thank

Halfway through the season...and my picks don't all look bad...but Seattle has
drastically disappointed.

AL EAST
Yankess best record in baseball. How drab...but I did pick them.
AL CENTRAL
White Sox hold a 1/2 game edge over who? The Tigers? Them Olde English D's still
look pretty good to me !
AL WEST
Texas Rangers great first half, but we've all seen that before. I'm not convinced
the Rangers will win, but I've given up on my preseason pick. Bad year
for the M's.
NL EAST
My Phillies just swept a 4-game series from one of this year's big surpriseteams(Reds).
Because they are a second half club, I think we can still winthis
NL CENTRAL
Cardinals are only 1 game behind Cincinnati (see sweep by Phils mentioned above)
and have stayed close enough that I think my pick still looks ok. Nice
to see the Reds having a good season again though...
NL WEST
Giants are like a roller coaster with winning and losing streaks, but whileeven
though they are hot right now, they have slipped to 4th in a very close
division. I'd be shocked if they end up on top, so this is not a good pick...

WILD CARDS ( AL and NL)
Very tight races here, especially NL. I picked the Braves, who are in frontof
their division , to nip the Rockies who are in front for Wild Card, butgunning
for the Padres!
Tampa Bay and Boston will be down to the wire for the extra spot, the injuries
have piled up in Beantown, but I think they will still overcome the Rays...and
I don't expect them to be quiet around the trade deadline, so they should

Okay OBCers...how do your preseaon picks look now that we've reached the All-Star

AL EAST-
In a surprise, I'm picking the New York Yankees.

AL CENTRAL
Closest AL races again this year, I predict the Detroit Tigers to edge the
Minnesota Twins. I think the Twins might have a better team overall, butI
wonder if they will be able to start quickly with April and May games outdoors
in MN. I like the Tigers pitching though!

AL WEST
I'm liking the Seattle Mariners this year. Some of it because of the players
they picked up, and some of it due to the players the Angels lost. I don't
expect a great record winning this division, but survival through late September
to decide the top spot.

AL WILD CARD
Hard to pick against the Boston Red Sox with the roster they have...so I won't.

NL EAST
Did anyone think I wouldn't pick my beloved Phillies? I expect a great season
here, and a runaway division winner.

NL CENTRAL
I am going with St.Louis again, just because I am not convinced the improvements
made from the other central clubs were good enough. In fact, I think
that the other clubs in this division might have each gotten a little worse.

NL WEST
Good race for the division pennant is anticipated here as well...my pick is
the San Francisco Giants. The pitching boys, it's the pitching!

NL WILD CARD
This one is tough, between the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies for me.
I think in the long run, Atlanta's winning pedigree will help bring another
Bobby Cox playoff visit.

Thanks for getting this started my Caffeine-Infused Buddy and our Fishy Friend
from the North!!!

Well Gals and Guys:

James S. Hirsch has a new biography out, "Willie Mays: The Life, the Legend."
It's a whopper of a book at 624 pages and $40 bucks. I'll wait formy
friendly library to purchase a copy. In the meantime, here's a review from
the Seattle Times:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/books/2010974645_br07mays.html?cmpid2628

And now that we have almost reached spring training .... who do you like
to win your AL or NL division?
Constable Canuck-lucky-fisherman Rainsley and I stay in touch and discuss
the AL West frequently.
Do you argue/discuss your favorite team with a fellow OBCer? Friends atwork?
Mother-in-law? Parish priest?
Weigh in and let us all know...I need a spring training warm-up so my mind
is right when it comes to baseball...

Bob Neill and I met for the first time yesterday as he and his family were =E2=9Cpassing
through=E2=9D Detroit on there way to Canada to do missionary
work. After a greeting and handshake in the lobby of his hotel
it was cardboard swapping time and Bob handed me a `53 Bowman B&W card ofFloyd

with a sm all group of FOOT members on a trip to Comerica Park to seeour

Mike Rich who I met for lunch the other day and of course it means that cardboard

Again - Mike Rich and I again met up yesterday as he managed to secure his firms

Along with a TIGER victory, a great fireworks display and great company
Mike slid me some more cardboard with a `60 Leaf HI number (Lumenti), a`62

I received letters from OBC=E2=99ers Frank Thomas =E2=9Cthe original=E2=9D

Thanks out tonight to GEORGE VRECHEK AND BOB NEILL, two guys to whose listsI've
never been able to do much damage.

Bob delivers a fiver of Fifties cards, including a very untrimmed '53 Topps#194,
Eddie Kazak. Also in the envelope in manicured form are '53 #175,Ron
Kline, 55 #8, Hal Smith, and 55 #89, Joe Frazier. Finally, a slightlydiminished
Billy Goodman (#82) comes along, knocking my 54 Bowman list down
to 32 cards! Whoohoo! Thanks, Bob! These are all great hits, 4 to lists
that really need help and one to the list I'm working hardest to finish!

George also sends sends five and takes aim at my '69, '70, and '73 Topps sets.
'69 Davilillo and Quilici (great names!), '70 mid-hi # Jerry Adair (who
set the fielding record for second basemen in '64 with a .994 pct, just 5errors
all season!), and big shots to the 73s with Willie McCovey ("Pitchers
intentionally walked Willie more than any other player") and RBI leadersBench
and Allen! Sweet! George, thanks for the big names and the help!

One of the amazing things about OBC is that guys like George and Bob hit lists
like mine. I really appreciate it, Gentlemen. I will continue to lookfor
ways to hit you and, meanwhile, pay it forward as well as I can to theguys
whose lists are within my range, trusting that what goes around will come

Blessings on all you OBCers!

First, Brian Lindholme hit me with Reds - Marty Keough and the Team card from

and Tiger Matt Batts.

Those were late to start, but then Early last week, Mike Rich called to saythat
Bob Neill would be in town. Well, my life has been a living heck at work
lately, but I had to make time to meet Bob!!! So we all met up Fridayevening
as Bob was passing thru town, as Mike treated us to a Tiger game. Unfortunately,
I barely made it to the game (meeting the guys at the parking
garage, albeit the wrong one...), so I didn't even have time to pull anycardboard
- sorry guys, I will get some going via the USPS soon.

Anyway, I was greeted by Mark with a sleeve of cardboard with 4 67 Topps and
a Mickey Stanley for the Homer Book.

Meeting up again after the game (this time I ended up in the right parking lot...),
both Bob and Mike passed cardboard my way. Bob pounded me with 7 hits,
including a 61 Jim Kaat and a 67 Ernie Banks, while Mike tossed me 42FB
hits from 73 & 74, a couple of 61 Fleer, the second to last 74 FB Team Checklist,
and 3 Topps Basketball with half of a 76-77 Bob Lanier.

Thank you all for the cardboard and the great time last Friday!!

Subject: Kent Goto and a Three Way!

Looks like Kent Goto is makinghis rounds again according to the frequent mentions
on the Thanks Server!

Kent turns Superman, set-killer (I think) by mailing 64Topps Giant card JimMaloney,
he from the Gremlins area of my Wantlist. I had this card a few years
ago, maybe mailed it to another OBCer and never added it back to the list...then
when I found a super cheap deal on all of the silly SP 64TG , I scooped
them up and thought I was done. Kent makes sure I have the binder slot
filled for #34!!
( I am still looking for #41 Gibson, but he's in this house somewhere!)
Thanks Kent!!

So, Mr. Kent Goto...I had a few minutes to look at your wantlist. Ouch...it's
not like I have a gigantic, Rittenberg-sized dupe box...but I have sometimes
manage to find a outbound card or two in my unorganized mess. I've come
up woefully short on finding a return smackerino for not just this envelope,
but the amazing two you sent me earlier this year.

OBCers, I've heard some successful 3-way trade stories on this server in the
past...let's make a casual deal...next guy who can send something to Kent,
LMK and I'll try very hard to send something to you!!
Whaddya think?

OBC Forever!

I can't believe Maryland was "rocked" by a 3.7 earthquake this morning..,,
My collection was shocked by a scud envelope from Rick Johnson that included one of the last dozen 1961 Topps high numbers on my list (rookie and single season standout Jim Coates) and a couple of 1950 Bowmans.  Wow and thanks,

First off was a fantastic 1953 Bowman of Dick Kryhoski, from the difficult middle-series, courtesy of Sean McGowan. I wasn't too sure about the "wrapping paper" he used--it looked like some sort of psychological test to see what kind of student I was--I think I failed. Next was an envelope from John Stamper. It contained two 77 Hostess cards, as that set slowly makes its way to completeion, and two Topps scratchoffs. The final 1970 one I needed--Tim McCarver, as well as a 71 Nate Colbert. First we have some great looking cards from 1965, 1968, and 1969 from RandyWelk. 65 and 68 are both sets I'm extremely weak on, and the 69 set is now about half done (I started off OBC a few months ago with maybe 25 cards from this set). Campy Campaneris and Matty Alou are the bigger names. Additionally, he sends along a long note, an All Star ballot, and a Tigers schedule. Thank you to you both for the wonderful surprise. Probably about a 20% chance though. One thing that could change things is my son Connor is playing for the local Junior League All Star team (13-14 year olds).
