BOB DONALDSON sends a pair of semi-hi's from my birthyear set (1972 Topps). Those two Psychos now leave me with one printing sheet's worth of hits...132 cards. Also included in the envelope was a cool postcard of The Babe. ROB FITTS sends along 10 hits to my 1961 Topps quest, including an Orioles TC, Herb Score, Don Larsen after he left the Yankees and two guys who were then current Yankees! All the cards were numbered between 104 and 204, but the ten hits demolished that part of my wantlist as I only needed 18 cards in all for that run. While I'm MUCH further away from the 1961 set than I am with '72, all help is duly appreciated. First of all, busy Bob Donaldson also sends me a really nice Babe Ruth postcard that accompanies a rare hit to my '60 Leaf set, #20 Cubbie Glen When I think of literary people in OBC, my mind always turns to Bob D'Angelo, who has sent me a number of great books over the years. This time he sends a small but potent looking 47-page memoir by John Updike about Ted Williams. The memoir is stamped as an uncorrected proof and I am anxious to see Updike's take on one of the most talented and enigmatic players of all Some of you have probably read this recollection of mine in past years, but I need to explain again how Williams holds a special place in my baseball obsession. Ted played in the first MLB game I attended. It was 1958 and I was 13 years old. I finally got my dad to fulfill a promise and drive me up to Boston from our home in Rhode Island to see the Sox play the Washington Senators. In those day with Washington, the joke was always, "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League," but on that day they gave my mediocre level Red Sox all they could handle. If memory serves me correctly, we sat between home and third way up in the grandstand in (I think) section 26. Just like in Fever Pitch, I will never forget that feeling of awe as I walked up the tunnel and saw the green of the Fenway grass for the first time. Ted, of course, stood out like a man among boys. Tall, though not slender during those last years of his career, Williams stood out most when he swung that bat. Even as he swished it before the pitcher delivered, you could see that he was something very different. It was like he was cocking a spring-action machine and flipping the lever to let it fly with that slight uppercut and wide arc. The Sox could not mount much of an offense that day, but Ted hit a homerun early in the game. What made it different was where he hit it. A majestic high bell shaped curve of a trajectory, it settled into about the 13th row in the bleachers just to the left of the alley that separates the bleachers from the grandstand. Here again, the rarity of the talent I was watching was obvious even to my 13-year-old eyes. As I look back over the 52 years since that day, I can think of very, very few times I have seen balls hit that far to right in Fenway. When the bottom of the ninth rolled around, we were down 5-3 to the Senators. The Sox got two men on, but there were two out. Up came Teddy Ballgame once again and everyone rose to their feet. We still had a chance and the man was up. Once again, Williams hit the ball high in the air to deep right. Tall Faye Throneberry (yup, Marv's brother) raced back to the fence in front of that same alleyway. He stretched his tall frame as much as he could leaning back against the wall as it seemed like forever for the ball to come down. Did he have it or did it sneak over the glove and the wall?! We held our breath as Throneberry started to trot in. Then he pulled his right hand out of the glove and threw the ball toward the infield. Final score - Senators 5 Sox 3. Today, I received a puffy from ex-mounty Grant Rainsley stuffed with hockey hits. And I received cards from Gord Ellis as part of a swap. Gord has every single card I need but I don't have enough for him, so I only swapped him for his low grade stuff. But I still got quite a haul -- 2 hits to a very short 1954 Bowman FB set (five or six left), 1 hit to my 1963-64 hockey set (1 left but Gord has it in NM so I will be patient), and although its the cheapest card he sent, its probably the best hit: 1974 #647 Juan Beniquez RC. This card wasn't turning up anywhere except on eBay for $4-6 (for a 50 cent common)!! So I'm very very grateful to Gord for killing off this team set for me. Thanks guys. When I get mail, receipts, magazines or anything else stackable I tend to put them into a pile or start a new pile. Over time those piles grow and multiply. This weekend, since it was raining out, I went on a pile reduction program. I'm not sure how it went but at least they're now out of my kitchen :-) Which brings me to an incoming from Kent Goto that was sent to me on May (!) 3rd. His envelope got absorbed by one of the piles. I was horrified when I found it but I think I rescued it just in the nick of time! Inside was a sharp looking SCP of Vern Law's 1960 Topps card. This one will single-handedly bring the overall grade of my set up at least a notch! Many thanks for thinking of me Kent! I managed to save a more recent incoming - sent June 2nd by Mike Rich - from the piles. Mike sent along pair of rookie cards, one each from two different sets. First, a 1960 Topps Ron Fairly, complete with the Topps trophy and all. The other? Just some 1954 Topps card of a fella named AL KALINE! Yes, I repeat: a 1954 Topps Al Kaline rookie! Stunned, speachless, amazed and floored all apply here...as well as appreciation. Mike was saving this for someone who needed this one for last and chose to send it to me even though I needed 2 cards. I'm not sure what to say really but I'll start with "thank you Mike!" Sorry for the 2 week late posting. I'm so busy all the time and
exhausted when I'm not busy I can't even make myself start up the
computer. We just had a graduation party for my son Wade, who many of

those of you that know him, realize what a major feat this was for him
I'm sure.

Cards continue to find there way here despite my lack of reciprocation
during the past year. From the heart of New England and the home of Bob
Donaldson comes a 55 Bowman, Marion Fricano and a Babe Ruth postcard
from whence I don't know. It has the look of an Exhibit card but thinner
and looks cool. Thanks for remembering me Bob!

Subject: Oh, Wow, are these thanks late

Hi, OBC folks.

Starting with the requisite apology: Sorry for being so tardy and negligent
with these thanks. Of course, life has been exceedingly busy and challenging,
but I'm still embarrassed that it took me this long. I think I updated
my wantlist once in May, and that was an update from March. I can't promise
I'll do any better from here, but at least I will acknowledge those who
have shown me generosity while I've flirted with the inactive member list.

Thanks to RANDY WELK, MIKE RICH, JASON CHRISTOPHERSON, KENT GOTO, PETER MEAD,
BRIAN BETZA, BOB DONALDSON, AND ED SCHOTT!

RANDY WELK got me with three 1962 Topps and a 54 Bowman (Yay!) #162, Ted Lepcio.
MIKE RICH passed on some from a friendly dealer who said to share--love
those guys!--with Topps from 65 (1), 66 (1), 67 (2), 68 (2). JASON CHRISTOPHERSON
introduces himself with an astounding forty-five 1966 Topps! Highlights
were Jim Gentile, Walter Alston, Felipe and Matty Alou, Paul BlairRC,
Manny Mota. Great stuff, Jason! I'm glad you're on board! KENT GOTOclips
off a rare (for me) 1950 Bowman, #245 Al Papai. PETER MEAD sends a really
fun envelope with a 1967 Topps Yank, Fred Talbot, a 1968 high #, anda
1974 WA variation team card. Thank you, Peter. That was sweet. BRIAN BETZA
(I'm almost sure) knocks two each off my 57 Topps (with Cards team card),
61 Topps (Jim Landis), and 65 Topps. (Brian thinks he probably sent me
that envelope, but wasn't certain. If someone else sent me those, let meknow
and I'll thank you, instead.) BOB DONALDSON also bumps two off my 54 Bowman
set, landing Al Corwin and Bud Souchock. Astoundingly, I'm down to 36
on my favorite Fifties set, and continue to hope that I will complete itthis
year (if I can keep from taking months off from collecting). ROB FITTS
just got me with twelve 1961 Topps, and my faves were Ralph Houk Yanks Mgr,
Julian Javier, and Gus Triandos. Finally, ED SCHOTT had a lottery thatI
won: Mr. Henry Aaron from 1968 Topps, accompanied by eight 1969 Topps, with
(future Yankee) knuckleballer Phil Niekro. Thanks to each of you for these
great cards!

Dang, guys, that's a long catch-up list. I was tempted to send each one individually,
but you probably don't want that many from me in a row. Honestly,
I do really appreciate all the cards, and I appreciate that you keep mein
the game even when I can't find a minute to participate. I just got a few
cards in teh mail, and I'll try to find some return fire for the rest of
you. It may take a while, but I will find something for each of you--andthe
other guys to whom I still have outstanding debts. Thanks for your patience!

Peace and Joy,
Mike R-W

I think the Post Office hung on to an envelope from Kent Goto for longer than normal.  Maybe they couldn't handle the volume he was throwning their way.  And then I have delayed my thanks for four or five days.  Kent is kind enough to include me in his mass mailings with a 1964 stand up of Chuck Hinton.  A very serviceble outfielder from the mid 1960s.
On a different note--I picked up a 1958 hires Duke Snider last night on evil bay--completing one of my favorite sets.  I won't ever be able to figure out how they selected the group of players in the set....but that is okay, delighted to have completed it.

Hey folks...

Well things seem to have finally settled into a holding pattern as opposed
to the downhill skiing I've been racing the past 2 years. Whoever is in
charge of the mail servers, especially the national one, can you please put me
back on them. The plan is still to get to Baltimore, hell or high water.

Belated thanks BTW to Lynn Miller to kept me in cardboard with a nice stack
of 77s. Thanks as always for remembering me Lynn.

I have to clean up my list a little bit then I'll send it out as an
attachment. I haven't had a chance to research a free website to hold the list.

On the National front, if it isn't being done already, I'll be putting
together the contact spreadsheet. For those of you who haven't been to a
National with OBC folks, this is the coolest thing you will do this year, I
promise that. And I can't wait to see some of my old OBC pals (yes Kent, you are
the OLD one!). I'll be doing some research to see when the Birds are in
town. There is one vendor that is supposed to be giving out tickets to the
Wednesday game.

I can't tell you how much I miss this group. Circumstances just made it
tough for me, but the friendships last a lifetime. Dupes box is pretty thin,
so please don't bother sending me anything. We'll do some swapping at the
National. Need to know what the hotel of choice is and who's heading to

Hope everyone is doing great and its time for me to shake the dust off and
get back into the swing of things...

RANDY WELK, my good and patient friend, sent me 9 cards ,ranging from 1962 Topps
through 1972 Topps, highlighted by a '71 Pops Stargell and a '72 Lou "The
Franchise" Brock. Incidentally, Brock's history (as I learned it in _October,
1964_) was fascinating and made me wonder how many baseball could-have-been-greats
didn't get the second chance to prove what they could do? Meanwhile,
my OBC-great friend Randy, thanks for these cards and for your kindness.
Return fire is on the way.

Its been a terrific sporting weekend for me. The USA's excellent 1-1 draw with
England in the World Cup, Scotland's rugby team winning away to Argentina,
A McLaren 1-2 at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, and a Tigerssweep
of the Pirates. How could it get any better? Well, arriving at work to find
an OBC envelope does just that!!

TheKing of Slavery Island - Grant Rainsley -provides 4 hits to my early
70s hockey lists which included 3 HOFers (70/71OPC Glenn Hall and Frank Mahovlich
AS, and 72/73OPC Yvan Cournoyer), along with another pretty good player,
a 72/73OPC Ken Hodge.

While my early 70s OPC sets still have some way to go, I made some great headway
on my 69/70T set last week, picking up 9 of the last11 cards I need
(only Parent and the dreaded checklist to go!).

Thanks again, Grant, for some fantastic hits!!

We finished up a great season by taking second place in the state, losing
the title game 2-1. Although it was a disappointing loss, we are very
proud of our girls and how they played the game. When I returned home yesterday,
there were two envelopes waiting for me. JASON CHRISTOPHERSON sent

MAC WUBBEN allows me to pick up some OPC and my first Turkey Red, Billy Sullivan

Hi gang,
Once again my time has been limited enough so that I barely have time to
open the envelopes that keep arriving despite the lack of outgoing
envelopes. Two deliveries to acknowledge in the last couple weeks: The first comes
from Mike Rich, who makes me the beneficiary of a group lot deal on Red
Man tobacco cards (hopefully from a dealer that will still accept his
business). I got one of his upgrades with an Eddie Joost that didn't take a lot to
upgrade - but it fits in great with my set! THANKS MIKE!!
An inbound envelope arrives from Steve Rittenberg, who also sends me a
single vintage card of a player named Eddie - a 1961 Fleer FB Eddie LeBaron.
Steve also included a few UV cards that have been sitting on my list for
over a decade. THANKS STEVE!! TAYL,

Mac Wubban surprises me with nine 1976 OPC cards.  This is probably the easiest set to hit on my entire list and is an all OBC effort. I believe Mark Talbot sent me a starter set a couple of years ago--and many of you have been nibbling ever since.  Highlight is an all-time all star card of the Iron Horse.
A package arrived from El Paso with no return address or note?  I am presuming it is from Richard Labs.  many thanks for a four-pack of early 1960s football highlighted by a 61 Fleer charley Conerly and a 64 Philly Willy Davis.  Great stuff.
Received another package from El Paso--different zip code and this one was an ebay package.  Cards had been advertised as 1953--all I knew was that they were cheap.  Turned out to be 1955s and one of them was a Schoendienst--the penultimate card for my set leaving only the Say Hey Kid to find.

I told my wife that there was a mall show in Pensacola, where she has family. We made it down to the Gulf on Friday and over to Pensacola on Saturaday. In the meantime, Brock Hattox had scoped out the show and learned that all the card dealers had cancelled. I was shocked but Brock and Geno had already planned that the main event would take place at an Irish pub nearby. What a place! Even at 1 pm on a Saturday it was packed. The menu had more than one person could eat in a lifetime. Brock order a heart-attack on a platter. I think the formal name was "blue cheese and chips". My wife and I each had sandwiches suitable for two meals. In fact, I ate half at lunch time and the other half at dinner time. Brock, as usual, had something really cool for me and I could not reciprocate. This time it was a salutation exhibit of Mel Ott. Wow. I think its easily the nicest card in my set now. Geno didn't bring me any cards but brought something better - an OBCer that I hadn't met yet. Now I get to cross John Storman off of my wantlist of people to meet. :-) Geno did bring some British cigarette cards and started my wife on a couple of sets, one with a Shakespeare theme and another with a Dickens theme. I doubt she cares if the sets are every completed but I do. :-) If anyone actually thinks they have some of these, I'll make a wantlist for her. hahaha. I have some British cigarette cards too. Turns out they were in my bag that I took with me during the trip but I didn't realize it. I'll had hoped there might be some that the other guys wanted but now I'll put out a message on the wantlist server instead with these as all "availables". After lunch, we received a free guided tour of the Navy Air Musueum by a certified Air Force pilot, Geno Wagner. I learned a LOT more about the planes on exhibit from Geno than I ever possibly could have done otherwise. I also learned that John Storman is into old movie serials and the Civil War so I've already asked for help to learn more on those topics. Two things I love about OBC are that its about more than the cards and that everyone has a cool story and fascinating interests outside of cards. On our way back from Pensacola, John "Bama" Harrell said that we could stop by. Well, it was more like an invasion. They took us out to a nice place for lunch where (again) we made a shambles of our diet. And then entertained us for the rest of the afternoon. Bama's bat collection is something truly unique. Actual bats used by players 150 years ago!!! Seems to me the Hall of Fame would be interested in this slice of history but John said they are more interested in the bats from major league players. What a shame for them. To be able to hold a piece of history like that was something I never expected. These weren't the store model bats -- Bama collects hand-made bats. Wow. Bama's card and ephemera collection was equally special. He's finished nearly all the sets from the 30s that you've heard of (and several you haven't). I've seen his list for over 10 years now and was impressed but seeing the cards was something else. Bama also has a really neat type card album, which included an italian set of sports-related cards. Included in the set is a right-handed hitting Ted Williams. And believe it or not, he had one dupe, the Ted Williams card. I owe Bama big time since now I have it. I wish we could have stayed longer but we were already overdue back home. Thank you again Brock, Geno, John Storman and John "Bama" Harrell (and wife) for the hospitality and company extended to my wife and me. I look forward to doing it again. ================= Date: Mon, 21 Jun 2010 19:39:47 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "Richard" Subject: card trades, good food, great company Yesterday Kit Okamuro, Lynn Miller myself and our families celebrated Father's Day together at Palace Station Hotel & Casino here in Las Vegas. Hi all -- Just when I think I am getting back into the swing of collecting, another three months slips by and I find myself once again behind in thanks and outbound mail. For the thanks: 1. A big thank you goes out to Randy Welk for a pair of 1970 Patriots: Jon Morris & Ed Philpott. When I first joined OBC, I had just helped a buddy ofmine get rid of many of the cards from his childhood. There were some, however, which were deemed to be too beat up to generate any interest from "real" collectors. The largest batches of "beaters" were 1968 Topps baseball and 1970 Topps football. Since no one else wanted them, my buddy let me keepthem as "commission". The '68 was the first vintage baseball set I finished and I'm looking forward to working on getting that '70 football set done as well. Thanks for helping me make progress on it! Love 'em! Oh... and howmuch razzing do you think Ed got for the back cartoon which informs us that "Ed married his college sweetheart." :-) Thanks, Randy! 2. Bob Donaldson sent me a six pack including a Babe. Ok... before I get myself in trouble with my wife I better clarify! Five of the six cards sent were wonderful Tiptonesque 1960 Topps, including Gil McDougald and Dick Groat. The sixth card included was a neat 5x7 postcard of George Herman Ruth. Wonderful stuff... Thank you, Bob!! 3. Brian Betza sent me another six pack! This batch included one 1960 Toppsbaseball card (Joe Shipley) one psychedelic 1972 of Lou Piniella, who is looking like he's nursing a nasty hangover, and four classic 1968 Topps football cards, including quarterbacks Craig Morton and John Brodie. Thanks so much, Brian... I love 'em all! 4. Rob Fitts sent me... guess how many??... yup SIX more wonderful vintage cards... all stars!! The awesome envelope included (5) 1969 Topps -- Lou Brock, Denny McLain, 2 World Series cards, and Sparky Lyle -- plus one 1970 Topps of George Lee "Sparky" Anderson! I can honestly say this is the first time I've ever received two different Sparkys in one envelope. Wonderful stuff... thanks, Rob!! and finally... 5. An interesting envelope arrive from Ant over the weekend. No, there weren't six cards in it. In fact, there were no cards from him. However, he didforward a SPECTACULAR 1978 Topps Football #3 ("Payton Rushes for 275 Yards") for Steve Rittenberg. OBCers --

As I sit here watching the US soccer team fall behind 1-0, the kids' come in
with the mail and say "Dad, looks like a baseball card!" Those envelopes
always have that look - a bit puffy, nothing that says "Okaloosa Gas andElectric"on
it, etc. Sure enough, something from my new buddy from lastweekend's
Pensacola hook-up, John Storman. What could it be? Lookingat
the back of the card, the guy hit .277 in 1951, with 101 RBI for the Dodgers...guesses?
THE DUKE! A 1952 Bowman Snider in gorgeous shape, after
I told John he was my dad's favorite guy! I'll keep this one handy for
their next visit - my dad will love his hero from when he was 10 yrs old!

And as I type, Donovan just banged home a goal for a 1-1 tie...thanks for the
awesome card, John -- and let's go USA!!

Take Care,

As I continue to bask in the sunshine of England's inglorious exit from the2010
World Cup, thanks go out this Monday morning to:

Gord Ellis: Gord hits Glasgow with a 6-pack of OBC Hockey from 1971/72 & 1972/73.
Welcome hits to rarely hit sets! And Gord, I'm sure I can come up with
a few UK cards for you!

Steve Rittenberg: Steve contributes a May 1965 issue of Baseball Digest featuring
one of the best (if not THE best) catchers of the 1960s -Detroit's
Bill Freehan - on the front cover. However, the digest proved to also double
as an eloborate wrapper for a 1965T #461 Clay Carroll/Phil Niekro, one of
the last 3 cardsneeded to complete that set! (Just #207 Rose and #550Stottlemyre
to go!).And on closer inspection, I also notice that the card
is signed by the ol' knuckler himself. Wow!

Big thank you to both Gord and Steve for getting my week off to a great start!

Subject: Over Due Thanks

I was out of town all of last week so I have some over due thanks to send out.
First hit goes out to Mike Rumley-Wells. Mike sends 2 great 54 Bowmans.
Noticed on the back of Joe Astroth that he spend 3 years wth the Coast Guard.
I love looking at these old cards and seeing how many were in the military.
 These guys were real heros.

Next up was a box from John Stamper. John sent a 63, a 68, 5 64s, and 70 Topps
story book of Deron Johnson, knocking that set down to 2. Also included
were a card that cannot be mentioned here and 3 Reds stadium cups of the
Reds. Not sure I should mention them as they are probably not ventage.

Third up was Randy Welk. Randy sends 3 76s and a 62. Also included were 5UV
hits including what I think is a set killer.

And batting clean up is Mark Zentkovich who sends a 80's Kellogg's Yaz and 2
other cards that cannot bew mentioned here.

Thanks guys. I've been a little lax in sending stuff out but hopefully I will
be sending out return fire very soon. Thanks again

Thanks to AT LEAST these guys: Jason Christopherson, Glenn Codere, Ryan Distelrath
(twice), Bob Donaldson, Linda Fitak, Rob Fitts, Kent Goto, Steve Hitzeman,
Lynn Miller, Rich Niessen (twice), Mike Rich... and probably more. My
sincere apologies if I have left your name off this list; I've moved and
a few of the cards may have gotten separated from their sender info in the

JASON CHRISTOPHERSON sent two 58s and a 59. I will have to get my 58 albumout
and put those in it... He signed the note OBC newbie, but that's a pretty
good package! Thanks, Jason.

GLENN CODERE sent a 57 Earl Torgeson and 59 Tigers team card! Plus some nice
British stamps which I also collect, sort of... thanks, Glenn!

RYAN DISTELRATH sent four 1970 Topps Posters including 30-game winner DennyMcLain.
He also sent, in a separate package, three 59s, three 62s, and two
65 Embossed! Thanks, Ryan!

BOB DONALDSON sent a 67 and 71 high number... and maybe a Babe Ruth postcard?
Not sure on that one. It was just laying there with the others. Either
way, thanks, Bob!

LINDA FITAK - well, this one got separated from the envelope, but it's pretty
unmistakeable - sent 1958, 60, 62 Topps hits, then Superman, UV Mantle, and
several others of the Linda specialty. Thanks, Linda!

ROB FITTS sent eight 1960 Topps, including two Cardinals and two team cards...
Nice. thanks, Rob!

KENT GOTO sent over a nice 62 high number. In fact, many of these cards may
have been high numbers... I was so overwhelmed, I didn't notice but happened
to be checking this one out. Sweet, thanks to a fellow Illinoisan!

STEVE HITZEMAN sent a couple nice names from the 1970 Topps set: Denny McLain
and Bill Mazeroski. Thanks, Steve!

LYNN MILLER and RICH NIESSEN - these got a little mixed up - sent a 79 Burger
King Reggie Jackson, 80 Bob Shirley, AND at least 47 UV hits to sets I'mworking
on. I know, I know. Thanks guys.

MIKE RICH sent five 66s and four 68s, including one Brave... I'm not sure what
to do about my love for the Braves now that I am back in Cardinal country...
thanks, Rich!

Holy moly, that's a lot of cards.
Thanks to great friends!

Subject: Good parts about coming home

There are a lot, of course. Seeing my kids, sleeping in my own bed, catching
up with my wife. Plus, envelopes with baseball cards waiting for me to open
them! To this end I have Mike Mroz, John Stamper and Brian Lindholme to

JOHN STAMPER has decided my 68 Topps list is easy pickings. Of course, that's
true, but he's changing that. This time, seven 68's found their way tome,
including the Twins team card. John sent three 69 Topps for good measure,
and he's already done a lot of damage to that list. This time, Jeff Torborg
joins the crew. Thanks, John! An envelope from you is always a welcome

MIKE MROZ, also a consistent contributor to my lists, knocks down four more69
Topps, including Yankees rookies Closter and Cumberland (the late Sixties
weren't exactly the Golden Age for the Pinstripers), and Ron Fairly, whose
card notes he had a .300 average in the World Series, contrasted with his
.261 lifetime average. If you're gonna step up... Mike also hits two 1973
Topps high numbers, one of which was Gene Alley, who won two Golden Gloves.
Great cards, Mike! Thanks for your generosity!

Finally, Brian F.T. Lindholme delivers a creative envelope of '50s Topps. Starting
with 1954, Brian hits one each from 54, 55, 56, 57, and 58! That was
a great surprise, Brian! I think that's only the 3rd time anyone has hit
my 54 Topps list, and it was also a pleasure to see Mack Burk, playing for
the Phillies in '58. Thank you, Brian, for thinking of me with that variety

Blessings on all y'all!

'66 of Joe Cunningham!
