Big thanks out to Lynn Miller for a top-flight package - a 62 Campy, two hits to the 72 set, and a Tom Seaver from the 73 set - knocks that set down to around half a dozen, some of them high number commons. Set looks very much in range to complete.

Much appreciated, Lynn!

Well, it might not actually be a cello pack as the wrapper and gum were missing,
but LYNN MILLER sends over 21 1978 topps cards, including the last Pete
Rose card needed for that page. These cards are crisp as can be. I guess
Lynn felt bad about not including the gum, because he includes a hit to my
1952 topps set as well, Sam Zoldak. Great hits Lynn! Thanks,

OBC World,
It should never be a surprise when you open your mailbox and find a Lynn Miller
Of course, it was a big surprise for me, as not only did I not personally open
up the mailbox, I found it on the kitchen counter after being gone 1/2 of
April on trips for both business and pleasure. I don't really know when it
came...but I know I like it!!!

First Lynn always includes a humble note...this one apologizing for the condition.
Say what? I should apologize for the condition of the cards these guys
are going to have to sit next to in the binder!!
Lynn mails 2 of the 12 1977 Topps I need to complete the set! And he included
some black beauties too!
The 71 Topps I need are all big numbered, just like most of you all...and EIGHT
more numbers can be crossed off the list now.

Thanks as always Lynn...first ballot OBC HOFer !

Lynn is up to his old-and-much-appreciated tricks - sending 2 from the 51 Bowman

As the stock market goes berserk today, let me pause a minute to extend a
simple and courteous thank you for a great surprise incoming from Kent Goto
- a '65 Embossed #8 Sandy Koufax. My list for that set is now cut to two
cards - #4 & #59.

Much appreciated, Kent. I don't know yet how I will pay you back, but I
will try to find a way.

My 1959 Topps and 1952 Bowman lists were both reading 220 cards left...thatis,
until today when two OBC envelopes arrived!

KENT GOTO sends along one of his ...er, "Available" cards. A Sheldon Jones from
the '52 Bowman set...card #215!

Also, BRIAN BETZA tossed a couple of '59 Topps commons to add to my binder...also
including #215!

If I played the lottery, I'd have a great number to use today...

Take care,

I'm sorry to sound so lame, but I truly do not remember - it has been that long ago. I have no excuses and I am chagrined about it, but there it is. Unforgivable I know, but if you recognize yourself in this scenario, I ask for your forgiveness and understanding Now the ramble, related to the third thanks. Several months ago, I went on vacation and (as usual) turned off my Yahoo Groups email forwarding so as not to jam up my inbox (I check my mail on the road and need to keep messages at a minimum). Unlike previous trips, when I got back I did not restart the forwarding so I have not been receiving or reading OBC messages for quite a while now. I am starting to regret this. Initially, when I joined OBC it was about the cards, but it wasn't long before it became about the people. Today I've reactivated my Yahoo OBC Rambling and Thank You groups so I can resume contact with the great members of OBC. My card collecting has ground almost to a standstill. I've pretty much decided to concentrate on Seattle PCL items (mainly popcorn cards) which are scarce in the marketplace, and few OBC members are likely to have or run across such items (Andy Cook is the exception). I could go inactive I suppose, but I would prefer not to. I don't want to discourage people (like Kent and Andy) from sending unsolicited cards, and I will make every effort to reciprocate. Anyway, my want list is obscure enough to discourage most folks. Also, I want to resume sending cards to others if I have them, don't need them, and someone else does. When I do, I try to make it clear that I do not expect return fire due to the nature of my want list. It is a real credit to Kent and Andy that despite my dormancy, and tough want list they still went to the time and effort to send me cards. So, in some sense I'm back. I'll still be pretty quiet, but you may hear from me on occasion. -Dave Fallen ================= To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Sun, 9 May 2010 13:15:20 -0700 From: marcpeter@juno.com Subject: A Great Goudy! Not what you think--simply a thank you to Mike Rich for an assortment of riches from the 1964 Philadelphia football set and from the 1961 Topps football set.  Two relatively still easy to hit lists.
The hangover part of the equation--one of the 61 cards is of Packer Max McGee who was the star of the first super bowl.  Poor Max didn't expect to play in the big game, so he tied one on the night before.  I think he scored a couple of touchdowns.  I also think he died tragically falling off a ladder or something like that.
In any case--thanks Mike for the nine slot-fillers to those sets.

It's not only my favorite Dodger player from the 1950's, from one of my
favorite sets of all time, it's in terrific shape. The Red Man Tobacco
cards (how many of you know the American Card Catalog designation is
T232?) were big, beautiful, colorful, and by today's standards combined
racism and sexism in one innocent advertising slogan on the back: "These
Baseball Cards are for Red Man 'Chewers' and Their Boys!" No girls need
apply, I guess. The Pee Wee Reese has a deep red background and he's in
his home Brooklyn Dodgers white uniform. I managed to complete the 1953
set (T233) a few years ago and am closing in on the rest. I even went to
the drug store and bought a packet of Red Man chewing tobacco as a
display piece along with my big cards.

Much appreciated, Kent!

OBC world,
Like the thrill of seeing a speedy runner hit one in the gap, and digging for
third...I am excited for the triple in today's mail!

John Storman, John Stamper and Mike Rich are to thank this time...here's a look
at my bounty!

Mike gets me high or at least semi-high with 71 Black Beauties and a 69 from
Ol' WL, including the Yankees and Mets team cards...I probably traded these
away back in 1971 to get a Phillies card or some sunflower seeds, but I have
them again! Thanks Mike you da man!!

JS from Florida sends 1968 cards, including the Dodgers team card. Open your
binders, OBCers..if you can identify any of the players on this "photo" you
are quite a fan! The other very cool burlaps sent my way included St. Louis
Favorite Mike Shannon, Phillie favorite Tug McGraw (as a Met) and Roberto
Clemente's AS card!!!
Wow that's quite a haul, John !! Thank you!!

The JS from California was not to be out done, as he sends 77's to really close
the gap on that set and a 64T Giant of OBC HOMer Johnny Callison. Great
cards and nearly killed a couple sets. Wow!

Thanks gents, these cards are greatly appreciated!!

Out of town for a couple of days. When I got back there were two great
packages to enjoy.

Brock Hattox sends a great lot of 14 Posties, mostly from '61, but also a
'62 Robin Roberts and three '63s. Actually the lot was filled with great
condition cards that you don't normally expect in a bunch of Posties and
several stars like Bunning, Richardson, Kuenn, Pinson, Santo, and Roseboro.
Brock, I will get something in the mail to you early this week.

John Scott Gray surprises me with a '53 Bowman Vic Raschi #27. John also
included a little humor with a note hoping that the card was not "too beat up
to find a place in my collection."

Thanks to both of you guys for great additions to my collection. Very much

This has been a rather unusual weekend for me in cards. It started yesterday,
when I stopped at a new card store near my parents house. I had only been
there once before, and had seen a 1934-6 Dimaond Star hi # Pie Traynor.
They still had it and I offered my best price and they accepted. They then
brought out a couple of monster boxes from the back room. One box had a
bunch of boxing cards, that I will have to go back and look at, although the
pricing seemed high. The other box, was almost completely filled with Tigers
cards. Among them, was a stack of 1953 Glendale Tigers. These can be
rather pricey. Only a set of 28, I had a grand total of 5, I have picked
up over 35+ years of serious collecting. I was low on funds, and picked up
the cheapest one. I had to be back on that side of town later in the day,
so I got some more money and went back later. The partner that was there,
was hesitant to sell the remaining Glendales, saying his partner knew more.
There were old price tags on 13 of the 17 remaning cards. It was the unpriced
ones, that were the real problem. I told him to take those out ofthe
deal and finally struck a deal on the remaining 13. Even with 3 dupesfrom
I originally had I now have 16 of the 28 in the set. A Diamond Star high
number HOFer and 1/2 a set of Glendales, and it was only saturday. I get
home to find an envelope from George Vrechek returning a pair of 65 Philadlehia
FB I misread on his wantlist, some local ticket stubs and then a 1940
Playball Heinie Manush, another HOFer! I keep thinking I will get morePLayballs,
but those sets have proven stubborn.
Today, there was a local card show. I arrived, and found Ron Perry and Mike
mroz had already beaten me there. Ron had bird-doggged a stack of Red Man
cards from OBC friendly dealer Mike Sandles. FYI, Mike Sandles, as has become
his custom handed me a stack of vintage Tiptons for me to pass aroundthe
group. Mainly 1960 Topps commmons. Let me know if you are collectingand
I will take a look and pass along a few. I ended up buying 41 Red Mans,
all without tabs, and no HOFers. I only needed 18 for my master set quest
of both expiration dates on back and with and without tabs. If you are willing
to swap any, please let me know, as I have lots of dupes, with and without
tabs. Mark Talbot showed up a few minutes later, and handed me some
1971-72 Topps basketball upgrades. Mike Mroz, then gave me some of my oddball
miscut cards, plus what I beleive are a few 1930s era German sports cards.
I did not get much else at the show, other than a 1962 Jell-o Duke Snider
for only $1. There is another store near the Redford card show, but they
are not open on Sundays. The owner there, keeps a small bag behind the
counter with my name on it, and puts cards away for me. He charges me a few
dollars for these Tiptonesque cards, that he does not want to put out for
public sale due to the condition. He offered to stop by the show and bring
me the stack for $10. When he called me on my cell, I offered to leavethe
show (I had been through most of the show) and go to the store, to look
around. He thought that was great and I mentioned it to the rest of the FOOT
gathering who joined me for our own private showing. I know Mark Talbot
picked up a 1961 Topps FB Jim Brown for $9 and Mike Mroz got a 1968 Topps
Mantle for $18.75, plus a bunch of Topps hockey. Not sure what, if anything
else, Mark and Ron got. Mark and Mike looked through my "$10 stack", and
Mark got a Davey Crockett card and Mike picked out a 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan.
I ended up getting a hit to my Parkhurst Hockey from the $10 stack as
well. I also got first dibs on a stack of 1968 Detroit Free Press Tiger cards,
that Mark and Ron both were trying to get me to let them buy them. I
need to upgrade mine first and they will get a crack at the ones I upgraded.
Rob, teh woner, has offered to do this for us again. I can see us doing
this once or twice a year, to see what else he may have picked up.
So thanks to George, Mike, Mark and Ron, plus a few dealers and card storesfor
a tremendous weekend of hits to my lists.
Mike Rich

I headed out to the Redford show Sunday to hopefully see some of the FOOT crew
and maybe pick up a little cardboard as well. I ended up seeing Ron Perry,
Mike Rich and Mark Talbot. It had been awhile since I have been to ashow,
so it was nice to get out again. I picked up a few hits to some sets,
as well as some dupes box material, but nothing extraordinary as far as purchases
at the show. Of course, it was OBCer's who came through to make my
day! Mark Talbot passed along 3 69 Topps, including Rod Carew, and heroMike
Rich killed a set ('73 Topps FB checklists) and got me to within 2 cards
on 2 others ('74 Topps FB Checklists and `74 Topps Baseball). I did start
a new set (Fleer Pioneers) with a small group lot purchase that had a few
dupes (let me know if you're working on it). We left the show early andhit
a nearby store with Mike, where I found a deal on a 68 Mantle, and wastreated
to a 69 Topps Nolan Ryan from Mike (Thank you!) All in all, a great
day with a few really nice hits.

A 1961 Topps stamp panel, 1952 Mother's Cookies, 1950Royal Desset Spahn, giving me my first variations in the set, 1936 WWG BB (a surprisingly tough set), a T-205, as I am almost 1/2 way through the set, T-207, most of mine have come from Andy, 1909 American Caramel E90-1: Mitchell (NY, not the rare Cinci), 1909 Dockman E92, Doyle - throwing, who is1 of 2 players with pose variations in the set. The other? Honus Wagner.4 - 1910 Sporting Life M-116, including 2 Tigers, including the supposedly scarce D. Jones blue background, a 1921 W-9316 Veach, who also is a Tiger(my 2nd, so I am working on that short set of 10) and type cards Zeenuts from 1914, 1917, 1923 and 1933 Sepia. WOW!!! Subject: Overdue Thanks to Jason, Ken, Kent, and Randy!

As the school year came to a close, young Jim was secluded in the cave
of grading. Overjoyed to see mail of the OBC variety he managed still
to keep his head down until he was done with his burdensome task.
Then, as almost always happens, he took ill. His body knew that it was
time for a break and his immune system went to Bermuda for a few days
leaving Jim snot-infested and bitter. Soon came the inevitable sinus
infection followed by his childhood nemesis, the ear infection. Ah,
the joys of summer!
Anyway, that's my story! Jason Christopherson sends along a nice stack
of '66s including Jim Brewer who has been a stalwart of many a
Whatifsports baseball team. Thanks, Jason, for the great introduction!
Ken Pillion sends along some '66s as well, including a beautiful card
of Al Downing. Mr. Downing was quite the k artist and walked a lot of
batters as seemed to be the way at the time. I remember looking back
at Catfish Hunter's numbers and thinking that his whip didn't look
hall of fame-ish. Great cards, Ken! Thanks!
Kent Goto hits my '50 Bowman list (which never gets hit!) with a great
card of Alex Kellner. How many pitchers have won 20 games in their
first full year in the majors I wonder? Kellner did it for the
Philadelphia A's in 1949. Great card from my favorite team - thanks
Randy Welk hits me with a pair from the '60s including a '60 of the
world series. Man, the Dodgers pitching was amazing! Love the cards -
thanks Randy!

Randy Welk and Mac Wubben sent some great cards my way this week.

Randy makes the first hit to my football game card and glossy sets

Mac overwhelms me with one of those packages I'll remember forever.
Mac sent a hit to my top ten list, a set killer, a tough card to find,
a really cool card -- all in one envelope. He sent a 1964 Giants
Willie Mays. Wow! I'm blown away.

Thank you guys. Your cards plus a letter from Doug Smith were the
only highlights in an otherwise dismal week. I truly appreciate the

Please contact me if you want to get together. I'll most likely be driving up
Saturday morning, staying in Shoreline then driving back Sunday afternoon.

I was just in Seattle last weekend to watch the M's get beat again. I've seen
just 1 run and a handful of hits in the two games I've been to so far this
year. I'm bringing a bat with me next time...in case they call me in.

John provided me with multiple hits to my '68 set. Very much appreciated,
John! And by the way... the condition of those cards is A-OK in my book! The
words "filler" and "upgrade" do not exist in my vocabulary. Well, I take
that back... if the paper loss is so great that you cannot read the card
number and/or you cannot see the player, THEN I might consider upgrading.
 These fit right in!

Thanks again!

Brian Betza found a couple of handfuls of 77 Topps Cloth Stickers and couldn't
resist picking them up to send to me. Thank you so much--I love this set
and appreciate you thinking of me!

By the way everyone, I apologize for being a little inactive in the last month.
Coaching baseball sort of cuts in to my free time for cards. I've got
a couple of week window here between spring and summer ball, so I'll see what
I can do to get some envelopes out during that time. Then I'll probably
be quiet again for a month or so. Thanks for your patience, everyone!
