AL CENTRAL Closest AL races again this year, I predict the Detroit Tigers to edge theMinnesota Twins. I think the Twins might have a better team overall, but Iwonder if they will be able to start quickly with April and May games outdoors in MN. I like the Tigers pitching though! AL WEST I'm liking the Seattle Mariners this year. Some of it because of the players they picked up, and some of it due to the players the Angels lost. I don't expect a great record winning this division, but survival through late September to decide the top spot. AL WILD CARD Hard to pick against the Boston Red Sox with the roster they have...so I won't. NL EAST Did anyone think I wouldn't pick my beloved Phillies? I expect a great season here, and a runaway division winner. NL CENTRAL I am going with St.Louis again, just because I am not convinced the improvements made from the other central clubs were good enough. In fact, I think that the other clubs in this division might have each gotten a little worse. NL WEST Good race for the division pennant is anticipated here as well...my pick isthe San Francisco Giants. The pitching boys, it's the pitching! NL WILD CARD This one is tough, between the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies for me. I think in the long run, Atlanta's winning pedigree will help bring anotherBobby Cox playoff visit. I am amazed to hear that you are picking the Tigers to win the AL Centra due to their pitching. I am predicting 79 wins for them this season due to a total lack of pitching depth. I have no confidence ina nyone after Verlander. Porcello had a spectacular rookie season last year, but how many follow that up with a solid second season? No one has figured out who the Tigers 4th and 5th starters will be. They have some experienced arms that have done nothing the last few years in Bonderman, Willis and Robertson. If 2 of them can have decent and healthy seasons, then the Tigers would have a chance, but odds are against it. As for the relief corps, Rodney, for all his troubles had a great season last year. Lyon was an excellent set up guy. They are both gone. Zumaya is annually injured and cannot be counted on. There is no possible way the bullpen can be as good as last year. Then the offense, is quite offensive. They do not have a single left handed bat, although Guillen is a switch hitter. The current plan has 2 untested rookies in the starting line up. Our catcher (Gerald Laird) and shortstop (Everett) may challenge the Mednoza line this year, even if they are solid defensively. Ordonez was a slow singles hitter last year and remains a subpar outfielder. The lone bright spot on offense, Miguel Cabrera went through rehab in the off season. It will be interesting to see what kind of season he has. If everything falls into place offensively, the Tigers will still be in the bottom half for runs scored. Tigers are looking at a possible 4th place finish barely beating out the Royals for the cellar. Hopefully I got them all: Bob Reed for a 75 mini miscut of FOOT fav Mickey Stanley and some UV hits including finishing my 1990 Post BB set. Peter Mead for a hit to the rarely hit 1950 Royal Dessert set of Alvin Dark. Down to 4 to complete the base set. John Leroux sends along 5 Will's Association Footballers from 1935-36. Bama sends me my 6th 1936 R312 and a shortprint 1941 Goudey #27 Crouch. Healso included a 1961 Tiger program for a FOOT member, but only Ron Perry was at the local show today. Spike sent my Haitian auction win of a T-205. Mac allowed me to join in the T-205 lot splpit and I now have 99 in the set. Just 5 more and the set goes onto the want list from have list. Randy Welk sends a bunch of schedules. Ron Perry treated me to brunch after the lcoal card show today. A couple of dealers sent me home with a couple fo boxes of cards to check OBC lists with. The large 3200 count box looks like it is mainly UV FB, buteventually I will check out the lists. I was able to get a number of hits at the local show today, but I also picke dup a bunch of items that I cannot ID. I picked up a 6 x 8" b & w photo featuring the 1934 Tigers that has a copyright of INP in the corner. The dealer indicated it was a 1934 Goudey Premium, but I am not familiar with any premiums that year. Any ideas? I also got a bunch of blank backed or skinned prewar era cards, mainly fromBritain. The highlight is a Jim Thorpe card but I have no idea what set it is from, although it reminds me of a Willard's Chocolate card. Finds at the show included 2 C56 hockey cards, bringing me to having 6 of 36. Another hit to the 1955-56 Wuaker Oats hockey (Ihave just over 1/3) andanbother hit to the shrinking 1933 Ice King set. I was asked by a dealer friend to ID some items, and one was some 1963 Nalley'sCFL coins. Oviously this gave me first crack and I got 4 shortprints to bring me to 2/3 of the set. In the same album were some 1961 Topps stamps and I got 4 of the last8 I needed! Other hits followed. They have a winnable division. I don't think they will be playing for the pennant, but AL central, why not?! Coke, Scherzer, Schlereth, Gallaraga and big Valverde give the Tiggers solid arms that you didn't mention. Bonderman, Robertson and Zumaya + Porcello and Verlander (who you did mention) give them 10 pitchers who can get the job done. To me, that's pretty deep...and in the division context, probably a better 10 than the other clubs. Every team will have its share of pitching injuries, so in pre-season, I just count on not all of the hurlers to be available all year. In the case of Detroit, unless one of the injuries is to Verlander, I think they would still be in good shape. Their offense could use an upgrade, although Clete Thomas (great baseball name!) is the lefthanded bat who is primed for a breakout season. I think it's cool that they will start two rookies...playing Scott Sizemore and Austin Jackson every day seems better than paying millions for Johnny Damon and Orlando So if you think the Tigers will be near the bottom, who do you think will win...Chicago? I can't get excited about that roster (pitching should be ok,although I only see 6 impact pitchers not 10) Remember that I have been a Phillies fan for 40 years, and I do have cloudyvision of other teams...even my own most years! :)) Debate is great. I'm three closer to finishing the set. The Redford show was one of the best for me in awhile. I looked at over a couple hundred 47-66 Exhibits and picked up 25 hits. I continue to make progress on the set (am about 70 cards from finishing) and some of the cards I need are commons. Of course I need lots of the tough to find cards too. I also picked up a group lot of Tipton 39-46 Exhibit Salutations. I've made this set a want list and have some to swap. In addition I bought a group lot of 50's and 60's Hockey including a bunch of 64/65 Topps Tall Boys. I have dupes from this set (mostly low numbers) to swap, or I can swap the whole bunch to make a nice starter set. Finally I picked up a 63 Topps Mantle and that set is getting closer to completion. As far as the Tigers, we have some promising young pitching and several bad contracts (Robertson, Bondrman and Willis) with veteran pitchers. We have an interesting/mostly unproven bullpen with at least four lefties. For offense we're still looking for a couple lefty hitters with at least one a power hitter. Bottom line is if the pitching overachieves and we hope the offense is adequate we might win 75 games. If the pitching overachieves and we trade for or sign some offense before the season starts and the Twins and White Sox underachieve, the Tigers might win 85 games. ================= Date: Tue, 09 Feb 2010 02:23:29 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "Richard" Subject: something old, something new Linda Fitak sends me a 1961, a hi number 1967 , a 1965, a a 1956 and many others Thank you, Richard Labs ================= Date: Tue, 09 Feb 2010 18:41:05 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "Richard" Subject: A nice envelope from Randy Yesterday I received an envelope from Randy Welk. It was one of those packages that catches you completely off guard because it wasn't a deal, but rather simply an OBC act of kindness. I received two 1949 Bowman cards to help me with that most difficult set. The cards were a couple of players who never made the hall of fame based ontheir on the field accomplishments, but were heroes in another way. Both Ulysses "Tony" Lupien and Henry "Hank" Edwards missed a portion of their careers because they served for us in the service according to the back of their cards. Lupien served in 1945 in the middle of his baseball career, while Edwards served for two years. These men are both hall of famers in my eyes. Thanks Doug!! THANKS MAC for the additions to my Goudeyset! Mac sends my way not one, not two, but THREE hits to my favorite sets, the incredible GOUDEYS! First card being a '33 of Joe Judge... Joe was quite the player with setting AL records in putouts (19,021), assists (1,284), career games (2,056!),double plays (1,476), and fielding percentage (.993!). In the '24 Series he batted a .385!!! A truly great player from one of the best sets around! Second up, Mac sends me a '33 of Ray Benge! I can *always* use another Dodger in my set... especially a Brooklyn one! Last, but certainly not least, Mac sends me my FIRST '35 Bowman 4 player card. I've always thought that this set was ultra-cool looking, PLUS it contains HOFer Goose Goslin, along with Alvin "General" Crowder (in '28 he went with 25 wins vs. 5 losses). Crowder was in the MLB for 11 years, and won many other awards. Firpo Mayberry is the 3rd player on the card... He iscredited to be the first relief pitcher with 20 saves in a season, the first to earn 100 career saves, the first to make 50 relief appearances in a season or 300 in a career, and the only pitcher to lead the major leagues insaves five times. Plus he played for my 2nd favorite team - THE TIGERS! The last player is Heinie Schuble, another Tiger(!), which he helped to win2 pennants with. His career lasted 9 years with the Cardinals & the Tigers. In '32 he was the 8th best in stolen bases, with 14 of them. Mac, I cannot thank you enough! I like Goudeys even better than the coveted T206 set. With the "Healing power of cardboard", I am willing to bet that my white blood cell count has diminished drastically. These were a VERY unexpected and thrilling package to get! Thanks again, Mac! And THANK YOU OBC! Subject: Thanks!!

Hi all --

I'm enjoying my re-emergence into the hobby... Three packages have
fueled the ol' collecting fire even more over the past several weeks.

First off, a big thank-you to Jeff DeLott, who sends a wonderful SCP
with Red Sox catching great Warren "Buddy" Rosar, vintage 1951 Bowman!
What a great card and player... classic OBC stock. While my son collects
cards of catchers, he's going to have to wait 'til I kick for this one.
Then again, since it's not UV-infested, doesn't have any metallic
parts, and hosts no embedded swatch of a
jersey/bat/hat/pants/jockstrap/etc. he probably won't recognize it as
a card. Just in case, I'm gonna file it away quick! Thanks, Jeff!!

My second big thank-you goes out to Linda Fitak, who is one of the few
OBCers who may (I'm not conceding anything Howard!) be even more
eclectic in their collecting taste as me. Evidence? Her envelope, which
always sports the coolest stamps ever made, contained (3) 1960 Topps
which together sound like a law firm -- Kirkland, Hobbie, and Coleman,
(1) 1967 Topps of Twins great Jim Perry, a 1990 Target Dodgers 100th
Anniversary card of Henry Cruz, a swatch-containing UV-infested Manny
Ramirez card that my son will no-doubt claim (even though it's not a
catcher), cool shiny new cards of old players Mantle & Ruffing, and a
cartoonish card of Matsuzaka that my daughter will claim for her
Japanese-born MLB player collection. But as those late-night
infomercials say -- THAT'S NOT ALL! Linda also encloses nine nonsport
cards, including a 1978 Topps Superman: The Movie Card #60 -- "Sunset in
Smallville"! The other eight nonsport cards were international issues:

* 1933 W.D. & H.O. Wills (UK) - Garden Flowers
* 1934 Monopol Cigarettenfabrik (Germany) - Aus Deutschen Gauen
[Regions of Germany]

* 1937 John Player & Sons (UK) - Birds &  Their Young
* 19?? Hartwig & Vogel (Germany) - Reichsverband  f=FCr Deutsche
* 1945 Sammelwerk (Germany) - Sammelwerk Nr.7:  Gestalten der
* 1962 Brooke Bond Tea (UK) - Asian Wild Life

* 1967 Brooke Bond Tea (UK) -- Flags and Emblems of the World (blue

* 1989 Brooke Bond Tea (UK) - Discovering Our Coast (blue back)

It was a fun diversion trying to identify these and find information
about them online. While my nonsport typecard collection is
predominantly US-based, it's always fun to expand the collection a bit.
When I get new cards for my nonsport typecard set, I typically scan and
tag them. I thought just for fun I'd go ahead and upload
  the ones
Linda sent. Maybe one of you might be able to narrow down the year or
some info on that German Hartwig & Vogel issue. :-) Also, if anyone
likes translating German, I always love to know what is on the backs of
the cards. Thanks a million, Linda!!

Finally, I owe both thanks and a big apology to Dan Angland. The thanks
goes for the awesome-cool assortment of cards he sent my way. The
apology is that the card stack has decided to do an early imitation of
an Easter egg hunt, blending in with all the clutter that amasses around
our humble abode. :-( More details when I re-find them.

Well all, time to go downstairs and dig out the box of dupes. I know I
have a bunch of extra '58s... I'll try to hit some lists later today.

Take care and thanks again to the wonderful folks who keep this hobby

Saturday thanks out to Ken Morganti, for 7 gridiron hits from 58, 59 and 61.

One of the 61 cards was Gino Marchetti - #7 - and this card just says early 1960s football. Gino is practically snarling at the camera. The card is 48 years old, and he still scares me just a little bit...

Much appreciated, Ken!

including a 53 Ashburn, and 2 1955s. I am down to about 6 1955s with
tabs to have an all tab set.
The other package was from a non-OBCer and included 6 Coke caps. More correctly,
5 Coke caps and a Tab cap. I do not get many Coke caps anymore, andthey
are among my fav collectibles.
Thanks Ken for the great hits!

RON PERRY swaps me back with a 1955 Bowman #76. Thanks, Ron. Got a ways to
go on that set, so it's nice to make progress.

RICK LYONS strikes back with a nice variety pack, ranging from a '56 and 57Topps
hit to a 1975 Topps Fred Lynn rookie. In between were three gorgeous
1968s, sharp of corner and bright of color, and a couple 73s, including Walter
Johnson, the all-time shut-out leader. Great hits, Rick! Thanks a bunch!

LINDA FITAK hits with not one but TWO Fitak Attack variety packs! Of course,
Linda's range covers all of the known card universe, so I got some greatbaseball
cards, plus Superman, a castle, trees, cougars, saiga ("This grotesque,
swollen-nosed antelope inhabits the great steppes of western Asia."),
zebra, Sealab describing our "aquanauts," Mercury-Atlas MA-6 space shuttle,
and many more. Everyone in my family enjoyed something from Linda's mailing!
Linda hit two off my 1951 Bowman list, which is a modest grouping to say the
least, so that's a significant blow. She also knocks down a Topps '57, '59
and '60, and several 66s and 67s! Linda, you're awesome!

KEN PILLION hits my 1954 Bowman set with two hits, #48 and #110, Red Schoendienst.
Ken pulled these cards out of his main collection for me. Wow, Ken.
Thank you. That means more to me than just the cards, much as I'm grateful
for these. I'm making steady progress on this set, thanks to such generosity.
Amazingly, it's now under 50! Still believing I'll complete it this
year and you guys make it seem possible.

Sorry that I've been getting backed up on thank you's. Life continues fastand
furious here, but all great stuff and I'm grateful for what I get to do.
By the way, if any of you are working on 54 Bowmans who haven't gotten my
scatter shots, let me know. I don't have any Mays or Mantle dupes, but these
are the only set I'm buying, so it's where I'll have trading stock for
the foreseeable future.

Peace and Joy,

Anyway on to thanking the hoot owl!!

Most of the 1952 Vern Stephens made it out to the west coast. Seems like the
upper right corner trailed behind, but Ol'Vern is greatly appreciated here!
A 64T Gil Hodges accompanied Vern. How is Gil NOT in the HOF?? There have been

Mr Hodges , care of Mr Mead...is in the house!

My friend Randy comes through with a 1954 Bowman #162, Ted Lepcio. Ironically, I had just decided to bid on this card on ebay...but hadn't yet. But the one he sent me is in better shape than the one I saw! No way I'll needto upgrade this guy! Randy tosses in 3 1962 Topps for good measure. Randy, thanks a ton, Man. I will be setting my sights on you again. Mike Rich sends a Topps 65 & 66, and 2 each from 67 and 68. Even a highishnumber for one of the 67s! Mike tells me that these came from OBC friendly dealer...umm...some guy I hadn't heard of and can't remember right now (I'm in town and my cards are at home). So thanks to that guy, but thanks toMike who troubled to send them to me. Much appreciated, Mr. Rich. Blessings on you all and have a good weekend! I don't see many cards from this set, so these are especially appreciated. Thanks Mike!

Erik Greenwood knocks me out with half of a t220 boxing set (well, that's what
he said it was anyways). I've never done a whole lot with the other sports,
but boxing cards have always intrigued me. Now I'm half-way there ona
fabulous looking set. Thanks for the tremendous surprise!

I want to thank Doug Dejong for sending me a card from 1967, a card of one my
my favorite players, a 1962 Post Mazeroski, and a 1971 Super card. Dougalso
sent a whopping 25 cards from 1962. Finally a scratch off of Juan Marichal
Thanks a lot Doug.

A nice surprise came from Richard Labs. Richard sent me a big bundle. 23 cards
from 1966.
Thanks Richard, that put a big dent in things.

Marshall West sent a couple of cards from 1976, 1 card from 1969 and a UtahJazz
schedule. The 76 set gets closer and closer.
Thanks Marshall

And a Giant box showed up out. Kent Montgomery sent me a ton. 789 cards in all.
Some to be mentioned elsewhere. Kent sent 6 cards towards the 1976 set,
and a big 16 cards from the 1978 set with some big names. Also, 7 cards from
1969 and one from 1974. Then some more big names with the 7 cards he sent
from 1975.
Geez, what a bunch.
Thanks Kent

Thanks everyone

It sucks a) getting old and b) being disorganized. I think I sent out thanks
to SPIKE GLIDDEN for a '67 poster - but if I didn't, then thank to Spike for
the first hit to that set.

Next, more thanks are extended to RICHARD LABS, who sends a tough '55 Bowman
high number of Dodger Billy Loes, a 61 Fleer of Goose Goslin, and a '49 Bowman
- one of the few that I have for that set. Much appreciated, Richard!

This afternoon was the first time since Thursday night that I've had both power and cable so I want to give some overdue thanks to Mike Rich. An envelope arrived earlier this week that contained 25% of my remaining 1972 Topps wantlist: a Reds team card and Archie Reynolds. I appreciate the high numbers and making a short list even shorter. Thanks much Mike!!

Happy Collecting!
