HUGE thanks out tonight to LINDA FITAK for the most surprising package I'vereceived in OBC. When I saw it was from her, I thought "Neat, one of the great Fitak-mixture of cards". And those are always fun. But inside was aNew York Yankee player post card of my Uncle Fred Sanford, already autographed, and sent to a friend of his...postmarked Feb 3, 1950 (and mailed witha 1-cent stamp!) This is not a typical collector item for me, but rather an emotional, and treasured, family item that I will keep with me until youknow when. Linda noted that it was "oddly enough" mailed from my state ofUtah in 1950. Not too surprising as Uncle Fred still lives in the same house here in Utah, and in the same neighborhood where I grew up. Sadly, at age 91, Fred is not doing real well right now...but he is still with us. My connection with him is his father is my great-grandfather. So right now I am gathering all I can for my Fred Sanford collection. LINDA FITAK, I cannot find the words to let you know how much I appreciate this one. I just hope you understand that you hit a big home run with thisone. Thanks LINDA, and thank you OBC for listening. Linda supplies some of the info in her note: A Yaz card for my collection, UD Epic Materials that has a hunk of one of his game worn jerseys attached. That sounds pretty 'Epic' to me. I wonder if it has some of his DNA attached or if they washed it pretty good before cutting it up. Another Yaz card from the 1984 Star Co. set and a Boston Beaneaters team card from the Origins of baseball set. Yaz wasn't in that picture, he was a bit young and that team was actually an earlier version of the Atlanta Braves. An 1890's version actually. Next, the attack features a couple of wacks to my wantlists, a 1989 UD Willie Randolph which cuts that UV list down to one measly card. (Not the Grif RC either). Also, the one card that can legitimately be posted and discussed on this server, a 1977 Kellogg's Hal McRae is a needed hit. Hey, let's just say the rest of the cards are just compliments to this pre-80s card. Besides, a true Fitak Attack should always be analyzed for the wonder that it is, right? The next four cards have never been seen by me before. First is a Gary Roenicke card from what appears to be an all-time Orioles baseball card set. Appears to be sponsored by Coke and Crown? Second, a similar type of card featuring Juan Berenguer on a Mets commemorative set sponsored by the Wiz and Fisher. Next, an all-time Dodgers card in the same vein featuring Lu Blue who played back in the 30's. The last card shows a goat, a donkey, 3 guys and a cart. Can't tell what all-time team they played for because the back is written in German or some similar language. They don't look like they are in any hurry to get anywhere though. They are just standing around. Well, Linda, I send my most hearty thanks for this great unique and fun Greg (yaz) ================= To: Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2010 21:59:52 -0600 From: "Fr. First of all, thanks to ROB FITTS for a book, a couple of new-style Japanese cards and a stack of 1964 Topps. Rob's mailing inspired a three-part series on my blog, which I've linked below for anybody who'd like to read it: Part 1: http://thevintagesportscards.blogspot.com/2010/11/more-foreign-flavor.html Part 2: http://thevintagesportscards.blogspot.com/2010/11/more-foreign-flavor-part-2.html Part 3: http://thevintagesportscards.blogspot.com/2010/11/more-foreign-flavor-part-3.html The second thanks goes to RYAN DISELRATH, who sends some cards from the 1952 Topps set and another card that has an autograph on it. I explained thesecards in detail in the following post: http://thevintagesportscards.blogspot.com/2010/11/mail-call.html Ryan's envelope put me past the halfway point of the 1952 Topps set, which is quite an achievement, even if it does point to a long, hard road ahead (95 high numbers left, and many HOFers among the rest). Ryan's generosity led me to conduct a giveaway of OBC-style cards in the post above, which turned out to be quite a boost to my blog. In a way, I was glad to see that the OBC spirit is still evident in many non-member collectors out there. My blog is one of those that tries to show that cards don't have to be hermetically sealed and antiseptically perfect to be enjoyed...anybody here who doesn't read it on a regular basis should consider checking it out, and I am glad to take contributions, especially onthose sets and areas (like hoops and hockey) that aren't in my personal collection. In my hope of finding the wonderful envelope #1, I delayed in sending out thanks to two other amazingOBCers. Rich Niessen sent me a huge puffy filled to the brim with cards spanning from 1967 through the UV era. Fantastic hits all over the ol' wantlist... and new! Thanks so much, Rich. About a month ago, Linda sent me a nice Fitak Pack that I raved about during my last Thanks. She and I have had a few really nice conversations via email since, and she has sent three more very cool stuffed envelopes. The last one to arrive, however, late last week absolutely blew me away. It included an AUTOGRAPHED CARD OF HARMON KILLEBREW!!! Holy Cow!!! Most of you know that Harmon was my boyhood hero and the night before the first time I met him I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas. Linda's card brought back all of those same wonderful feelings. I'm not ignoring the other great UV, Nonsport, and vintage cards she sent but I can't deny that it's the Killebrew that's had me smiling over the past few days. Wonderful!! Thank you Linda! Well all, I have to hit the road for the holidays... driving out to my inlaws place in Maryland and stopping at my brother's new place in Ohio on our return. In the first puffy, Linda sends a Murphy Game Used Bat card, as well as hits to the '59, '60, '63 and '71 Topps lists, highlighted by a '59 Words of Wisdom card featuring Casey Stengel and Don Larsen. Assorted oddballs featured names like Eddie Mathews, Karl Spooner and Davey Johnson, as well as more of those great non-sport assortments. In her second puffy, Linda hits the Hometown Hero list with an awesome '62 Salada coin of Red Sox pitcher Tom Brewer! Linda also includes hits to the '63, '66, '71 and '73 Topps sets as well as a stack of oddballs featuring names like Pete Rose and Eddie Mathews. Linda also includes several of the non-sport cards that will find a home in my inspiration file at work! Don't know if you planned it that way Linda, but it was a great treat to open one of these great packages the last few days! Thanks a ton! Merry Christmas OBC! (Maybe this will be their year) Thanks Ed for a great gift, I truly enjoyed the cards. Mike Rich called a week ago to ask if I wanted to join a few other members of FOOT (I guess at this time of year, we should be called FOOL - FraternalOrder of Lion's Fans - which ironically makes sense considering the NFL team we follow...) in attending the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, which featured the University of Toledo Rockets and Florida International University Panthers. The game, although lengthy, had an exciting finish with FIU prevailing. It was great to spend an evening with fellow OBCers Mike Rich, Ron Perry, Mark Talbot, and Mark's brother Chris. Before heading out from our meeting point, Mark and Mike passed me a coupleof cardholders filled with goodies. Mike hit me with a 75 Kellogg Joe Rudi, 3 Fleer World Series and a 73 Willie Mays, bringing me to within 4 on that set. Mark hit me with 7 79 Topps Football and a set killer - 1978 Topps Football #333 - Rushing Leaders with Walter Payton!!! After a short night of sleep and a long day at work, I came home to a wonderful Fitak-Pak. Linda hits me with a 64 Hank Bauer, a 65 Don Buford, and 3semi-highs from the early 70's. She also found room for a cool Albert Spalding card that cannot be mentioned and some interesting Brooke Bond cards and German cards!! Very nice !!!!! Thanks for the goodies and a great time! Randy's very nice personal note let's me know that he lives only 5 miles from Santa Claus, Indiana, and one of his gifts is a "batting snowman" (wearing a green sweater with a capital "I" on the front), but with a big black-lettered "OBC" on the bottom of the ornament. One of a kind, I'm Besides the personal note, there was a Winnie the Pooh Christmas card, a post card from Santa Claus, Indiana, and a brochure. Three '54 Topps and a '51 Redback were the card contributions. But my favorite is a 1989 Mallard Press little booklet (about 4"x7") with a picture of Reggie Jackson on the front and a title, "Great Sluggers". On the front are these nine names: Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, Bo Jackson, and Jose Canseco. The last two names may be questionable additions, but hey, it was Randy, absolutely top shelf OBC Secret Santa Spirit. The ornament will find a place among my "collectible" ornaments from past holidays and will be carefully packed away soon. Does anyone know what Bo Jackson is doing these days? Happy New Year! Hello All, It was Sunday night and Mike Rich had organized a trip downtown to catch some College Bowl Action. It was an entertaining game that was certainly belabored by too many time outs BUT it was all okay because the company of Mike Rich, Ron Perry and Mike Mroz and my brother Chris made it a very enjoyable time. Our MAC team representatives Toledo made way too many mistakes ad a very questionable late game short kick ended up being their demise as the Panthers of FIU kicked a game ending field goal to secure the victory. A highlight of most of the evening was the FIU pom-pom squad which provided plenty of diversion during the long time out periods. Of course cardboard was exchanged and from Mike Rich I received yet another T-218 TOLSTOI back card of boxer Honey Mellody allowing me to remove that card from my list as I have all (5) variations. The master set quest has slowed considerably as I have not picked up too ay lots of late but Mike gets me back on track and this gem was sandwiched by a couple Archive cards with HOM'er Norm Cash and OBC'er Frank Thomas. Thanks Mike!!! Mike Mroz also added an OPC Hockey card and (5) cards that look like 1961 Topps cards BUT they're not - Thanks for adding to that group in my collection Mike!!! It is always great to have a FOOT get-together - Thank Mike for arranging it - BE WELL!!! Santa Fish told me he was hitting some old sets and starting some new ones for me, invoking the sacrosanct OBC rule that having two cards means you've started the set. So, thanks to Mr. Parker, I have now started the 1969 Topps Deckle Edge, with #'s 20 and 25, Helms and Koosman, and 1970 Scratch-Offs with Piniella and Seaver! I've heretofore held off on the insert and oddball sets, but Santa Jimmy informs me that "It's never overly optimistic to start a couple new sets, that's what OBC is all about..." For old sets, Parker Claus hit 58 Topps, 59 Topps including Hamner, a 63 Lopat, 66 Staub, 67 "Moe mows down 11," and 68s including Felipe Alou. Old Saint Jim then went after some Topps Seventies, with nine 1970 grays, including Fregosi, Pappas, and several highs, fourteen 72 psychedelics, including the high checklist, and high numbers like Bill Russell and Dusty Baker. All that would make a GREAT Christmas present... but there were also five 1971 Black Beauties, one of which was my personal hero, Thurman Munson! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME! That's a big, tough card, one of the coolest pics on a card I've seen (up there with the 76 Bench warrior pic), and one of my favorite Yankees of all Thanks, Santa Cat! It was worth waiting until Christmas "Day" (I opened it at 12:15 am) for such a surprise. Blessings on your head and may your generosity return to you many times over!
